Baby Sacque Pattern #558This free pattern originally published in: Spool Cotton #94, Gifts to Crochet & Knit

    Infant Size

  • Materials: Clark's O.N.T. (12 balls) or J. & P. Coats (8 balls) Mercerized Crochet, size 30. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 10. 1 yd. of ribbon.

Gauge: 7 shells make 2 inches; 5 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, ch 172 (to measure about 17 inches), turn. 1st row: 3 d c in 4th ch from hook, * skip 2 ch, s c in next ch, ch 3, 3 d c in same place as last s c. Repeat from * across (56 shells). Ch 3, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: S c in ch-3 of 1st shell, * ch 3, 3 d c in same ch-3, s c in ch-3 of next shell. Repeat from * across, ending row with s c in turning ch-3. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Sl st across to ch-3 of 1st shell, sl st in ch-3, s c in next ch-3 of next shell (1 shell decreased). Continue in pattern across, ending row with s c in last ch-3 of last shell (another shell decreased). Ch 3, turn. Hereafter continue in pat-tern, decreasing 1 shell at both ends of every 6th row, until 48 shells remain. Work straight until piece measures 6 inches. To shape for raglan sleeve, decrease 1 shell at both ends of every other row 3 times, then decrease 1 shell at both ends of each row until 10 shells remain. Break off.

Left Front. Starting at bottom, ch 87 (to measure about 8 inches), turn. Work in pattern as for Back (28 shells), decreasing 1 shell at one end (this to be underarm side) every 6th row, keeping opposite edge straight, until 24 shells remain. Then decrease 1 shell at underarm side each row until 4 shells re-main. Break off.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, ch 141 (to measure about 10 inches), turn. 1st row: Half d c in 3rd ch from hook, half d c in each ch across (140 half d c). Ch 2, turn. Hereafter pick up only the back loop of each half d c. 2nd row: Half d c in each half d c across. Ch 2, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 2 inches. To shape top of sleeve, de-crease 1 st at both ends of each row, until 82 half d c remain. Then decrease 2 sts at both ends of each row until 38 half d c remain (to decrease, work off 2 half d c as one half d c). To shape neck, work across 1st 15 half d c, turn. Work over these last 15 half d c, decreasing 2 sts at both ends of each row, until all sts are worked off. Break off. Skip 8 half d c, attach thread to next half d c and work other side to correspond.

Right Front. Work exactly as for Left Front. Place the shapings of sleeve between shapings of Back and Front and sew in place. Sew up underarm and sleeve seams. Work a row of s c closely around all edges of sacque. Cut ribbon in half and sew to each side of neck edge at front.
