Cautions

For safety reasons, the Bodyguard mustbe operated, calibrated, and serviced byqualified personnel. Before using theBodyguard, please read and understandthis User’s Guide and take note of thefollowing precautionary information:

❑ The Bodyguard’s gas sensitivity shouldbe tested before each use.

❑ Do not expose the Bodyguard to Aerosolsprays, polishes, waxes, or lubricantscontaining silicones or lead. Thesecompounds will desensitize or “poison”the combustibles sensor. When poisonscannot be eliminated, it is essential totest the sensor frequently to ensure safeand accurate operation of the Bodyguard. If the sensor becomes poisoned, it mustbe replaced.

❑ Replace the Alkaline batteries or chargethe NiMH battery pack only in non-hazardous areas.

......Alarms

All Bodyguard instruments are suppliedwith both visual and audible alarms thatwarn you of possible hazardous environ-ments. The visual alarm consists of two redLEDs that are located on the front andbottom of the instrument. The audiblealarm consists of a piezoelectric soundtransducer that produces alternating tones.

Low- and high-gas alarms can be set toprovide first a warning and then an alarm(except for oxygen) of when predeterminedgas levels are exceeded. Oxygen alarms areset for minimum and maximum levels. When the low-gas alarm level is exceeded, the LEDs flash and the audible alarmpulsates at a rate of once-per-second. And if

the high-gas alarm level is then exceeded, the rate increases to twice-per-second.

In addition to the low/high-gas alarms, there are TWA and STEL alarms that areactivated when the instrument is setup forHygiene operation (see Chapter 3, Turningon the Data Logging, Min/Max, TWA, andSTEL Functions).

For instruments that are setup for eitherBasic or Supervisory operation, a flashingreading in the Normal Gas Display alwaysindicates a low/high-gas alarm. For instru-ments that are setup for Hygiene operation, however, a flashing toxic gas reading couldalso indicate a TWA or STEL alarm. Todetermine the nature of an alarm forinstruments that are setup for Hygiene

✍ Note: You will not be able to download auser’s exposure data to a computer orprinter once the TWA and STEL valueshave been cleared.

Resetting the Alarms

Latching Alarms

Latching alarms are used to lock the instru-ment into its alarm state, even when thegas level drops below the alarm set point. For example, the alarms continue if you:1) disregard an alarm and leave the areabefore looking at the instrument; 2) check aconfined space by lowering the instrument

This procedure is used to calibrate allsensors at the same time by using a mul-tiple-gas cylinder that has a mixture of allthe appropriate calibration gases.

Perform this procedure in fresh air (clear ofall combustible and toxic gases). If thesurrounding air is of questionable quality, apply zero gas when the instrument zerositself during Step 4.

▲ WARNING: Use of a four gas cylinder tocalibrate a Bodyguard measuring LEL,O2, H2S and CO is acceptable with thefollowing caution. All electrochemicalCO sensors have a cross sensitivity toH2S. The Bacharach 54-7003 CO sensor

......has a filter to eliminate this H2S cross

sensitivity. This filter is rated for800 ppm hours of H2S exposure. Thefilter will easily last well over the life ofthe sensor, even on a weekly calibrationschedule with intermittent low level(around TLV) H2S exposure. However, constant long term exposure to lowbackground levels of H2S may causepremature breakthrough of the filter. This can provide an erroneous COcalibration, perhaps as much as 50%low. Caution should be exercised inconstant low level H2S backgroundareas; check the CO sensor calibrationon a separate CO-only cylinder atregular intervals to verify the integrityof the calibration.
