First and second supervisor are from astronomy for A-students, for A/N, A/W and A/I students, only the first supervisor is vrom astronomy and the second is from physics, mathematics or computer sciences, resp..

The responsibility for N/A, W/A and I/A projects, is not with astronomy, but with physics, mathematics and computer sciences, resp.. In that case astronomy ‘only’ provides a second supervisor.

Obligatory … … to take care that by January 18th you have received

permission by the SA or SA’s to start, that your project is fully determined and that there is a second supervisor appointed (I can help).

… to participate in the first week courses (A and A/X).

… to give three presentations.

… to hand in your thesis in time … there are two consequences if not: the grade may be lower and real chances exist that the grading will not be ready in time.

Obligatory … Research skills: focused sessions during first week

February, but also a few courses during the semester, optimized along BRP action points.

Check the site (also for time, date and location). For A/N all skills are obligatory. For A the following courses are (for the moment)

obligatory: science communication, library&literature search, project management I and II, lab safety for A-students with lab work (general safety for all).

Later obligatory: academic writing I and II and How to present your research.

This year this process is different from previous years and some fine tuning is still expected. Check blackboard !!

Scientific output (presentation and thesis) Plan according to deadlines – try to finish early!

Inform all persons involved (my BRP talk will be at …)

Allow for at least one iteration of your report

with your supervisor.

One written scientific report per A-group.

Language should be English.

Grade will be for the report as submitted before the deadline.

Grading BRP Grading is based on submitted report (deadline!) and final

presentation (3+1 EC); graded by supervisor in agreement with the 2nd supervisor.

Important criteria: your initiative & ideas amount of effort background & context discussion of methods & results scientific method (error analysis, …) formal aspects (references, figures, …) presentation thesis & talks

First supervisor determines grading for the way the research was performed (18-20 EC).

Students A/N or N/A You work on your own

Choose either a supervisor in the astronomy (A/N) or physics (N/A) department, depending on where your primary supervisor is located. The 2nd reader has to be from the other department

A/N: Physics: require lab-related project

N/A: Astronomy: require link to physics

Join progress meetings only in primary department

You are responsible to keep your 2nd reader informed on actions in the other department !
