I GENERAL PROVISIONS

SECTION 1 SCOPE OF APPLICATION

The examination regulations for Bachelor’s study programs at the state-recognized, private Hochschule Fresenius consist of a general section and a special section. The special section details and supplements the provisions of the general section for study programs in the Facul-ty of Design. This special section refers solely to the study pro-grams in Fashion Design (B.A.) and Fashion Design (with internship) (B.A.) in the Faculty of Design.

SECTION 2 TYPE, FORM, AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY, UNIVERSITY DEGREE

1. The Bachelor’s study programs in the Faculty of Design serve as professional quali-fications. Candidates who have successfully completed the module assessments and completed and passed the Bachelor’s assessment are awarded the title “Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)”.

2. The study programs teach specialist skills, knowledge, and methods that enable students to perform academic, artistic, and design work and encourage responsible actions in a free, democratic, and social constitutional state. They promote an un-derstanding of how skills, knowledge, and methods are applied in line with different professions and their complex interaction. The programs convey the principles of lifelong learning and prepare students for advanced study programs and to inde-pendently expand their professional horizons.

3. The Fashion Design (B.A.) and Fashion Design (with internship) (B.A.) study programs teach basic artistic/design, constructive/developmental, and technical/textile know-ledge and skills as well as methodological skills for designing, planning, and imple-menting prototypes through to entire product groups. The programs enable students to develop collections, derive and explain artistic concepts, assess qualities of form in designs, and analyze trends, material qualities, and production processes.

4. Fashion Design (B.A.) and Fashion Design (with internship) (B.A.) are full-time, on-campus study programs and are taught in English.

SECTION 3 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1. The general admission requirements for study and the admission requirements for the study programs are set out in section 5 of the general section of the examination regulations for Bachelor’s and Master’s study programs in the Faculty of Design at the state-recognized, private Hochschule Fresenius. The currently applicable ver-sion of the admission regulations for Bachelor’s and Master’s study programs in the Faculty of Design also stipulates specific admission requirements for Bachelor’s and Master’s study programs in the Faculty of Design.

2. Applicants to the Faculty of Design must take aptitude tests.

2.1. The aptitude test for the Fashion Design (B.A.) and Fashion Design (with intern-ship) (B.A.) study programs consists of an artistic aptitude test and an interview. A portfolio of artistic work must be submitted for the interview; applicants are free to use any artistic procedures and techniques. The artistic aptitude test consists of individual and/or group tasks. The admissions committee reviews the results

Page 5: BACHELOR’S STUDY PROGRAMS IN FASHION DESIGN (B.A.) and … · 2019-11-05 · Section 15 Academic transcript, Bachelor’s certificate, diploma supplement 10 IV FINAL PROVISIONS

and asks each applicant about their artistic work, motivation, and professional goals during the interview. The committee examines the applicant’s artistic abil-ities as well as their personal commitment and social skills.

3. The admissions committee decides whether an applicant has passed the aptitude test. The admissions committee regulates the admission regulations for Bachelor’s and Master s study programs in the Faculty of Design.

4. In accordance with section 54, subsection 4 HHG and section 4, subsection 1 of the ad-mission regulations of the Faculty of Design, applicants who do not have a university entrance qualification but have proven their exceptional artistic talent must complete an additional artistic aptitude test.

SECTION 4 ENROLLMENT, RE-REGISTRATION, SEMESTER LEAVE

1. Students generally register for the following semester four weeks before the end of lectures in the present semester (“re-registration”). In exceptional, justified cases, students can re-register retrospectively up to one week after lectures start in the current semester. In this situation, students must provide an explanation in writing.

2. To attend seminars and participate in assessments and obtain performance records, stu-dents must be enrolled or re-registered for the relevant semester.

3. Students are permitted to take leave upon request for important reasons. Requests must be made six weeks before the end of the semester preceding the semester in which leave is to be taken. The provisions of the applicable version of the Hessen Im-matriculation Act (Hessischen Immatrikulationsverordnung, HImmaVO) also apply.

SECTION 5 REGULAR DURATION OF STUDY AND PROGRAM STRUCTURE

1. The regular duration of study for the Fashion Design (B.A.) study program, including the Bachelor’s assessment, is 6 semesters according to the study and assessment schedules. The regular duration of study for the Fashion Design (with internship) (B.A.) is 7 semesters.

2. Graduates of the Fashion Design (B.A.) study program earn 180 credit points; 1 credit point equates to 30 hours of work. Graduates of the Fashion Design (with internship) (B.A.) study program earn 210 credit points. The seminars, module handbooks, and examination regula-tions are designed to ensure that students can complete their program within the regular du-ration of study. The study program begins in the winter semester.

3. The study program is organized in three study stages.

- In the first study stage (a), which corresponds to semesters 1 – 2 of the study pro-grams in Fashion Design (B.A.) and Fashion Design (with internship) (B.A.), basic skills, knowledge, and methods are taught together with an understanding of their academic and artistic applications mainly in compulsory modules supplemented by in-terdisciplinary elective workshop modules. This provides an introductory perspective.

- In the second study stage (b), which corresponds to semesters 3 – 6 of the study pro-grams in Fashion Design (B.A.) and Fashion Design (with internship) (B.A.), advanced skills, knowledge, and methods are taught together with an understanding of their

specialist or broader scope applications. In the Fashion Design (with internship) (B.A.) study program, the compulsory internship takes place in semester 5.

- In the third study stage (c), which corresponds to semester 6 of the study program in Fashion Design (B.A.) and semester 7 of the study program in Fashion Design (with internship) (B.A.), the Bachelor’s assessment is completed.

SECTION 6 PROGRAM ORGANIZATION

1. The study programs in the Faculty of Design at Hochschule Fresenius are taught on campus. To boost efficiency and performance, the study programs are taught in study stage (A) mostly and in study stage (B) partly in fixed study groups of a set number of participants.

2. Students are provided with suitable structures to organize their university life at the Faculty of Design. Individual students are involved in

2.1. initiatives to promote integration and cooperation among students in as many areas as possible,

2.2. the organization and implementation of internal events that support learning goals and the academic-artistic role of the university, and

2.3. the Hochschule Fresenius alumni program.

SECTION 7 PRACTICAL PROJECT

1. The study program has a strong application orientation and includes practical proj-ects. The following types of practical project can be offered as part of a module.

1.1. Artistic competitions or exhibitions for or in collaboration with companies, asso-

ciations or educational institution

1.2. Projects with companies that involve cooperation with company employees on practically relevant topics within a specified time period

1.3. Bachelor theses in collaboration with companies, educational institutions or agencies

II ASSESSMENT

SECTION 8 TYPE AND SCOPE OF ASSESSMENTS AND PERFOR-MANCE RECORDS

1. Progress on the study program is measured and documented by means of graded module assessments and performance records. The allocation of modules, module assessments, performance records, and ECTS points to specific semesters and study stages is described in the study and assessment schedules. ECTS points are awarded on successful completion of module assessments as well as the submission or ob-taining of a performance record.

2. Graded assessments may take any of the following forms:

2.1. Written exam (minimum 60 minutes, maximum 240 minutes in length)

2.2. Semester paper (at least 2 weeks, at most 12 weeks turnaround time; maxi-mum 20 pages)

2.3. Presentation (minimum 15 minutes, maximum 45 minutes in length)

2.4. Formal talk (minimum 15 minutes, maximum 45 minutes in length)

2.5. Artistic or specialist academic project work with a clearly defined purpose, scope, and time frame.

3. Performance records provide documentation of competences (learning outcomes) gained in seminars or during independent study. Required performance records must be specified at the start of each semester in accordance with the study and assess-ment schedules (see Appendix) and must be suitable in type and scope for achieving the learning outcomes. The number of performance records must be clearly below the number of graded assessments. While a performance record is not graded, it is a condition for the awarding of ECTS points.

4. Performance records may be required during the study program in any of the following forms:

4.1. Reading

4.2. Written or oral composition

4.3. (Digital) portfolio of artistic work

4.4. Work sample

4.5. Short presentation

4.6. Written acknowledgements (documentation of internship, learning agreement and such like)

4.7. Successful participation

5. In addition to the graded assessments and performance records mentioned above, stu-dents may also be required to:

5.1. participate in artistic competitions

5.2. prepare, set up, and take down artistic exhibitions and perform related PR tasks

5.3. prepare, implement, and archive documentation on artistic projects

5.4. describe artistic projects

5.5. participate in company projects, also as part of competitions

5.6. participate in business simulations

5.7. manage projects for artistic exhibitions and fashion shows or other such events

In such cases, students are to be given information by the seminar teacher at the start of the semester.

Page 8: BACHELOR’S STUDY PROGRAMS IN FASHION DESIGN (B.A.) and … · 2019-11-05 · Section 15 Academic transcript, Bachelor’s certificate, diploma supplement 10 IV FINAL PROVISIONS

6. Required written or oral graded assessments and performance records may be or-ganized individually or in combination. Presentations, talks, and project work may include practical aspects. Graded assessments as defined in subsection 2 b) to e) and performance records as defined in subsection 4 b) to e) may also be conducted as group work. This decision lies with the examiner. In cases of graded assessments and performance records conducted as group work, it must be possible to clearly define and assess each student’s individual performance.

7. Graded assessments and performance records can only be conducted for the desig-nated modules within the particular study stage.

8. Graded assessments and performance records may be conducted via the ILIAS learning platform. This decision lies with the examiner.

SECTION 9 SEQUENCE OF ASSESSMENTS

1. The sequence in which graded assessments and performance records are to be con-ducted is defined in the study and assessment schedules (see Appendix).

SECTION 10 GRADING OF ASSESSMENTS

1. Within the modularized teaching system, ECTS credit points are awarded depending on a defined workload for successful participation in seminars; in addition, exam-inations are given numerical grades. Credits and grades are shown separately. Suc-cessful participation in a seminar requires fulfillment of all specified assessments defined in the appendix to the examination regulations and successful completion of examinations. Examinations are graded. While a performance record is not graded, it is a condition for the awarding of credit points. Grading of examinations and evalu-ation of performance records shall take no more than six weeks.

2. If an assessment consisting of several examinations that together provide the overall grade results in a “Fail” (5.0), then only those examinations that were not passed are to be re-taken.

3. Assessments as defined in section 8 subsection 2 a), b), and c) that cannot be retaken must be graded by at least two examiners.

III BACHELOR’S ASSESSMENT

SECTION 11 TYPE AND SCOPE OF BACHELOR’S ASSESSMENTS

1. The Bachelor’s thesis aims to show that the student is able to independently deal with a topic within a specified time frame using academic methods and on the basis of the skills and knowledge acquired. Both the task and the topic must meet the aims of assessment as defined in section 2 and must be completed within a time period in accordance with section 12 subsection 1.

2. The Bachelor’s thesis for the study programs Fashion Design (B.A.) and Fashion Design (with internship) (B.A.) comprises academic and design elements in the as-sessment. This is demonstrated by the artistic development of a collection design including an academic justification of the concept behind the collection based on the-ory and the implementation of that design in the light of formal aesthetics, technical construction, and social theory considerations.

3. Valid components of the Bachelor’s assessment for Fashion Design (B.A.) and Fash-ion Design (with internship) (B.A.) are:

3.1. Bachelor’s thesis

3.2. Thesis defense

3.3. Exhibition and/or documentation based on the Bachelor’s thesis

4. The Bachelor’s thesis requires the completion of a seminar paper and/or an artistic project including supporting documentation, each with a clearly defined scope.

SECTION 12 BACHELOR’S THESIS

1. The Bachelor’s thesis is to be completed within 12 weeks.

2. Students must pass the Bachelor’s thesis in order to complete the remaining part of the assessment.

3. Guidelines regulate the specific requirements of the Bachelor’s assessments for the respective study programs.

SECTION 13 THESIS DEFENSE AND EXHIBITION

1. The thesis defense provides an opportunity for the candidate to present the findings of the Bachelor’s thesis to the examining committee.

2. For the study programs Fashion Design (B.A.) and Fashion Design (with internship) (B.A.), the aim of the thesis defense is to explain to the examining committee the con-cept behind the collection design developed as the Bachelor’s thesis. The candidate is given 30 minutes in which to describe the idea, implementation, and outcome of the artistic work submitted as the Bachelor’s thesis and to explain the academic basis for the project and further relevant connections between theory and application. The candidate’s presentation is followed by questions from the examining committee. This may last between a minimum of 20 minutes and 45 minutes maximum.

3. The time period for the thesis defense is determined on issuance of the topic for the Bachelor’s thesis. The thesis defense shall take place within four weeks at the latest following submission of the Bachelor’s thesis. For the study programs Fashion De-sign (B.A.) and Fasion Design (with internship) (B.A.), the colloquium may be followed by preparation time of up to six weeks for the exhibition and/or documentation.

4. The order in which students attend their thesis defense is determined by drawing lots when registering for the Bachelor’s assessment. The examining committee may conduct thesis defenses in batches at their discretion. The thesis defense is open to all members of the university. Representatives of corporate partners, associations, and educational institutions may be admitted as guests.

5. For the study programs Fashion Design (B.A.) and Fashion Design (with internship) (B.A.), the thesis defense is followed by preparation time for the exhibition and/or documentation of the Bachelor’s thesis. The exhibition and/or documentation of the artistic or design project produced as the Bachelor’s thesis represents a public pre-sentation appropriate to the particular professional field. This can take the form of an internal or external presentation and/or a publication.

6. The result of the thesis defense and exhibition contributes to the overall grade for the Bachelor’s assessment.

SECTION 14 RETAKING THE BACHELOR’S THESIS, BACHELOR’S THESIS DEFENSE, AND BACHELOR’S EXHIBITION/DOCUMENTA-TION

1. The retaking of Bachelor’s theses is regulated in section 23 subsection 1 of the gener-al section of the examination regulations for Bachelor’s and Master’s study programs at the state-recognized, private Hochschule Fresenius in the Faculty of Design.

2. The Bachelor’s thesis defense can be retaken once if it receives the grade of Fail (5.0).

3. The Bachelor’s exhibition/documentation can be retaken once if it receives the grade of Fail (5.0) and the Bachelor’s thesis defense has received a minimum grade of Pass (4.0).

4. The date on which the Bachelor’s thesis defense and exhibition/documentation is to be retaken is set by the first examiner within four weeks. The topic is set by the first examiner.

5. A student is deemed to have failed their Bachelor’s assessment if the components of the Bachelor’s assessment for the relevant study program have received a grade of Fail (5.0) and cannot be retaken. Students must pass the Bachelor’s thesis in order to complete the remaining parts of the assessment.

SECTION 15 ACADEMIC TRANSCRIPT, BACHELOR’S CERTIFICATE, DIPLOMA SUPPLEMENT

1. The Bachelor’s study program provides a professional qualification and is success-fully completed when all study and examination assessment requirements for study stages A – C as stipulated in these examination regulations have been fulfilled with a minimum grade of “Pass” (4.0).

2. On successful completion of all module examinations and passing of the Bachelor’s assessment, the student receives an academic transcript, a Bachelor’s certificate, and a diploma supplement.

2.1. For the study programs Fashion Design (B.A.) and Fashion Design (with intern-ship) (B.A.), the grades for the Bachelor’s thesis, thesis defense, and exhibition/documentation together form the overall result of the Bachelor’s assessment: - Bachelor’s thesis 70% - Thesis defense 20% - Exhibition/documentation 10%
