Student profileStudents who elect to study the Degree in Biology should have an interest in studying and understanding living beings (animals, plants and microorganisms), including their biological functions, their development and their natural distribution. In addition, students will learn about the interactions which occur in nature between different life forms, their abiotic environment and current environ-mental problems, etc. Students should have the capacity for attention, observation, perception, logical reasoning, analysis and synthesis, together with visual and auditory memory, spatial skills, sensitivity, creativity and methodo-logical rigour.
Career opportunitiesGraduates in Biology are equipped for professional prac-tice in the following areas, among others: research and development in the life sciences, health care, the phar-maceutical, agro-food and biotechnology industries, envi-ronmental studies, breeding, cultivating and using animal, plant and microbial species, land-use and environmental planning, conservation and management, information and documentation management in museums, zoological ins-titutions, botanical gardens, scientific foundations and the press, academic activity in a variety of different settings and commerce and marketing of products and services related to Biology.
Course contentsBiology graduates will be capable of using basic and applied general and specialist knowledge from the various discipli-nes within Biology. Furthermore, they will be capable of applying state-of-the-art study and analytical methods and techniques in Biology.
Consequently, Biology graduates are equipped to design and participate in research projects in any of the Biology disciplines: Botany, Zoology, Ecology, Plant Physiology, Animal Physiology, Cellular Biology, Microbiology, Gene-tics, Biochemistry, etc., or to participate in multidiscipli-nary projects which require the knowledge and experience of a biologist. This Degree is aimed at equipping future bio-logists to apply the fundamental concepts of the scientific method to basic and applied research. Similarly, gradua-tes should be able to identify the various plant, animal and microorganism species in existence and in fossil regis-ters. Biology graduates will develop a genuine vocation for understanding individuals, populations, communities and ecosystems, and will be capable of resolving problems affecting the environment.
