Goal Setting
Why teach goal setting at home? Goal setting helps children learn from their failures and increases the likelihood of task completion and the probability of student success. Goal Setting and Self-Esteem Being able to set and accomplish goals gives children control over the way they change and grow. This allows them to feel confident about taking care of themselves and contributing to their sur-roundings in a positive way. By knowing that they can take care of the basic tasks that daily life requires, they will gain the confi-dence to face the unexpected challenges.
TOP 10 TIPS FOR PARENTS WHEN GOAL SETTING TIP #1: ACT EARLY, PREPARE AHEAD OF TIME- As school begins, sit down with your child and review last year’s report card. Discuss successes and areas that need improvement and set goals in each subject area. TIP #2: VISUALIZE THE GOAL-Help your child visualize accomplishing the goal. Talk about how this goal can be met. TIP #3: SET CLEAR-CUT ATTAINABLE GOALS-Successful goal setting means that goals are achievable, measurable and believable. TIP #4: MONITOR PROGRESS- Talk about and recognize which efforts did or did not work. (We learn from our mistakes.) TIP #5: REFLECT AND SET NEW GOALS- Help your child determine if the goal has been reached and make changes if needed. TIP #6: SET GOALS AS A FAMILY- The child need support from the whole family. TIP #7: BE SUPPORTIVE- Use positive re-enforcement even when the child is struggling to meet his goal. TIP #8: USE OBJECTIVE HELP-Talk to your child’s teacher about his progress. TIP #9: STAY INVOLVED-Check in weekly on your child’s goals. TIP #10: CELEBRATE ACHIEVEMENTS-Use positive re-enforcement and small rewards to encourage your child when a goal has been met.
