Back to Research
Last week we discussed 5 steps of research:
1. Identify Research Topic/Theme2. Narrow it down/Form Key Words3. Enter keywords into Search Engine4. Evaluate Results Page5. Choose the best websites
Today we will add on two more steps to the research Process.
![Page 3: Back to Research Last week we discussed 5 steps of research: 1.Identify Research Topic/Theme 2.Narrow it down/Form Key Words 3.Enter keywords into Search](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56649f125503460f94c24ea4/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
My teacher gave me an assignment to do a research paper on an animal.
1) Topic: Animals2) Narrow it down: Ferret
3) Even more Specific = Key words: Black Footed Ferret
4) Once I had my key words, I typed them into my search engine and came up with my results page and I
EVALUATED THE SITES5) Finally I found a great “.org” website to use as my reliable
source!
http://www.defenders.org/black-footed-ferret/basic-facts
But first let’s review:
![Page 4: Back to Research Last week we discussed 5 steps of research: 1.Identify Research Topic/Theme 2.Narrow it down/Form Key Words 3.Enter keywords into Search](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56649f125503460f94c24ea4/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Too General
2,380,000 results!
Specific
38,100 results!
![Page 5: Back to Research Last week we discussed 5 steps of research: 1.Identify Research Topic/Theme 2.Narrow it down/Form Key Words 3.Enter keywords into Search](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56649f125503460f94c24ea4/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Step 6: Taking Notes
Once you have found your reliable source and you begin your research, you will need to keep notes on the
information and facts you find. You will need to read or skim the article to look for facts to complete your
research. Make sure you just don’t copy all the sentences from the article, but instead just jot down the facts that you need. Your research doesn’t need to be in complete
sentences. Sometimes I use bullets to write down the facts I’m recording:
• Eats other small animals: squirrels, rabbits, birds • Sometimes eats plants
![Page 6: Back to Research Last week we discussed 5 steps of research: 1.Identify Research Topic/Theme 2.Narrow it down/Form Key Words 3.Enter keywords into Search](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56649f125503460f94c24ea4/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
From the great reliable source I found, I took notes on the facts I needed. This
is what it looked like!
My Notes:
Internet Article on Black Footed Ferrets:
![Page 7: Back to Research Last week we discussed 5 steps of research: 1.Identify Research Topic/Theme 2.Narrow it down/Form Key Words 3.Enter keywords into Search](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56649f125503460f94c24ea4/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is stealing.– If you go to someone’s house and take his or her iPod
without asking and pretend that it is yours, that is stealing.
– Reading a book or an internet article, copying the words from it, and pretending they are your original thoughts is also stealing.
But before we go any further, we should talk about something called Plagiarism.
![Page 8: Back to Research Last week we discussed 5 steps of research: 1.Identify Research Topic/Theme 2.Narrow it down/Form Key Words 3.Enter keywords into Search](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56649f125503460f94c24ea4/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is against the law.◦ UCLA Law has compiled a list of lawsuits filed over the
last 100 years for plagiarism in the music industry alone at this website: http://cip.law.ucla.edu/song.html
College students have been expelled from school for plagiarism.
Students caught plagiarizing, at the very least, fail their assignments.
![Page 9: Back to Research Last week we discussed 5 steps of research: 1.Identify Research Topic/Theme 2.Narrow it down/Form Key Words 3.Enter keywords into Search](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56649f125503460f94c24ea4/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
How to Avoid Plagiarism
To avoid plagiarism, give credit to the source of your information. In other words,
CITE YOUR SOURCE!!!Here is how we do that:
From the website you are using to record all your research, write down:
the name of the website, and the date you accessed it.
![Page 10: Back to Research Last week we discussed 5 steps of research: 1.Identify Research Topic/Theme 2.Narrow it down/Form Key Words 3.Enter keywords into Search](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56649f125503460f94c24ea4/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Step 7: Cite Your SourceHere is what it might look like:
Name of Website
Defenders of Wildlife Website, September 18, 2015
![Page 11: Back to Research Last week we discussed 5 steps of research: 1.Identify Research Topic/Theme 2.Narrow it down/Form Key Words 3.Enter keywords into Search](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022070400/56649f125503460f94c24ea4/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Now Let’s Practice and add steps 6 & 7
1) Topic:2) KEY WORDS:3) Enter key words into the search engine4) Evaluate your Sites5) Choose a reliable source6) Take Notes (write down two facts):7) Cite Your Source:
