All middle schoolers to get iPadsBy Stephanie Creech Times Managing Editor

The Wilson County Board of Education has ap-proved spending just over $2.1 million to provide all middle school students with iPads starting this school year.

Students enrolled at Daniels Learning Center, the district’s alternative school, will also have ac-cess to iPads this school year.

The board held an emer-gency meeting Tuesday morning to approve a master lease purchase agreement with Apple Inc., the manufacturer of iPads. Because Apple is the sole manufacturer of iPads, no bid process was used. Therefore, board approval of the agreement between the company and school district was required.

The money will cover not just the iPads but needed support resources to make the devices work.

School officials are put-ting a priority on getting the iPads rolled out to sixth-graders first. It will

be later in the school year before seventh and eighth-graders receive their iPads.

Details about student and parent contracts covering the proper use, damage and theft of the electronic devices are still being worked out so stu-dents likely won’t be tak-ing the gadgets home right away.

Sixth-grade teachers have already been trained on using the iPads and are busy searching for appli-cations they can use with their students.

Superintendent Sean Bulson said when talks first started about provid-ing iPads to all middle school students he asked David Lyndon, executive director for Secondary Ed-ucation for Wilson County Schools, to bring together a group of seventh and eighth grade teachers to look at applications and what training would be needed. Bulson explained there’s two days of com-mon core training sched-uled before school starts so some training for iPads can occur then.

Budgeted into the $2.1 million is about $50 per iPad for the purchase of applications. Bulson said that’s because not all mate-rials out there are free.

The idea behind pur-chasing iPads is so stu-dents will have access to digital textbooks. Bulson reminded the board that the iPads are meant to re-place textbooks.

Bulson and the board will be talking during the coming months about the district’s overall strategy for providing laptop com-puters and iPads for all students.

Bulson said the $2.1 mil-lion is one-time money. Going forward, he would like to see the board and community reach an un-derstanding and commit-ment on funding providing technology in all of the schools.

Chairman Robin Flinn said this will be a “learning year.” But she stressed that this is “definitely the way we’ve got to go” in order to be “ahead of the curve.”

Bulson raised the pos-sibility of providing iPads

for board members so board meetings could be paper-less. Flinn said she thinks that would be a good idea so board members can talk to people in the commu-nity about how they are using iPads.

School board approves spending more than $2.1M

Good news about bad weather

Here’s some good news about bad weather. When the skies are brewing snow and freezing rain this win-ter or when severe weather threatens at anytime, Wil-son County Schools’ fami-lies should listen for the telephone to ring with the latest news about school closings or delays.

Whenever weather requires a change in the school schedule, an au-tomated communication system will dial school

families and deliver the news. The system will call telephone numbers gath-ered from the database at each school.

Missed the call? Check your answering machine or turn to television or ra-dio for the latest weather-related information. No call means the system does not have your correct phone number.

Calls to families and to television and radio sta-tions about changes to

the school day generally will be made by 5:30 a.m. However, if the weather re-quires an earlier decision, information will be distrib-uted by 7 p.m. when school is to be closed or delayed the following day.

To ensure that you get a bad-weather call, make certain that your phone numbers listed at school are current. Calls will not be made when school op-erates on a regular sched-ule.

Asbestos reports EPA-AHERA (Asbestos

Hazards Emergency Re-sponse Act) rules require that asbestos inspections and management plans are to be performed ev-ery six months. Wilson County Schools contracts with EEC, Inc. of Ra-leigh for these require-ments. A copy of these reports is available at each

school office, the Board of Education office, 117 N.E. Tarboro St., and the Maintenance Department, 519 Ward Blvd., Building 1A. The reports contain findings and recommen-dations required by EPA guidelines. The recom-mendations outlined will minimize any potential accidental exposure to

asbestos. Only trained and licensed profession-als are allowed to correct any asbestos situations. The cooperation of par-ents, parent organizations, teachers, employees and students in dealing with this matter is greatly ap-preciated. Please direct inquiries to the director of maintenance at 399-7820.

Problems have solutions. Wilson County Schools wants to help you find one if a problem crops up.

The correct place to start when you’re looking for an answer is on the first step of the administrative lad-der.

Talk with the individual closest to your problem first and right away – the teacher in most instances. If your concern cannot be addressed to your satisfac-tion, climb the next step and talk to the principal. Most problems meet an eq-uitable solution here.

Still not the answer you’re seeking? Go up an-other rung; call the Central Office. Ask for the execu-tive director who supervis-es the grade level at which the problem has occurred – elementary, middle or high school. Still not con-tent? Call the Central Of-fice again and climb higher. Ask for the assistant super-intendent responsible for your school. Doesn’t work there either? That’s very rare.

Now it’s time to call the superintendent. But to reach that top step, be sure to have four important ‘yes’ answers ready. Have you talked with the teacher, principal, executive direc-tor and assistant superin-tendent?

It’s that easy … in that order. Step by step. Just climb the ladder.

Got a problem? Climb the ladder

Pest management program controls treatment

Wilson County Schools uses an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach for controlling insects and rodents on every campus. IPM does not include the Early College Acad-emy, which is located on the campus of Wilson Community College. The school system contracts with Orkin to provide IPM service.

The IPM approach focuses on making school buildings and grounds an unfavorable place for pests to live and breed. Thorough maintenance and cleaning, for example, reduces or eliminates food and water sources on which pests depend and destroys places where pests can hide. Other IPM tech-niques include increasing sanitation and monitoring, sealing entry points, modifying storage practices and physically removing pests.

From time to time, controlling a pest problem will require the use of chemicals, which will be used only when necessary and not as a routine treatment. When chemicals must be used, the least toxic products will be applied. Access to treated areas will be protected against unauthorized

entry for the period specified for a particular chemical. Notices will be posted at application sites and will remain there until the time for safe reentry has passed. Parents can request a list of the pesticides that may be used on school campuses this year by contacting Mark Letch-worth, the school district’s director of maintenance, at 399-7820.

In addition, parents can request prior notification when specific pesticide applications are planned for their children’s schools. To receive notification, parents should call school and ask for an IPM Re-quest for Notification form. A form is required for each school from which a parent wishes notification. Those who submit the request will be notified at least 72 hours before a pesticide is applied.

If a chemical application is re-quired to control an emergency pest problem, notice will be provided as soon as reasonably possible after the application. Notification does not include cleaners (disinfectants), pesticides formulated as baits or gels and any EPA-exempt pesticide.

North Carolina General Stat-ute 115C-391(a) requires local boards of education to include a reasonable dress code for students in policies governing the conduct of students. Wilson County Schools students have the freedom to be fashionable within the boundaries of accept-able dress established by Policy 6401, Student Dress and Ap-pearance, which follows. Also included below is a companion dress code for staff. Principals have the authority to put into practice additional measures governing standards for dress.

Student code The Wilson County Board of

Education respects a student’s right to choose his or her style of dress or appearance. However, students are expected to adhere to standards of cleanliness and dress that are compatible with the requirement of a good school environment.

If a student’s dress or lack of cleanliness is such that it consti-tutes a threat to health or safety, the principal or principal’s desig-nee may require the student and student’s parent or guardian to take appropriate action to rem-edy the situation. In addition, if a student’s dress or appearance is so unusual, inappropriate or lacking in cleanliness that it clearly disrupts class or learning activities, the student may be re-quired to change his or her dress or appearance.

Student violations of this policy shall be handled by the principal or principal’s designee. Violation of this policy shall be a Category One violation of Policy 6400, Student Conduct and Dis-cipline, and the penalty shall be the same as any other Category One violation.

Principals will maintain guide-lines to assist students in deter-mining appropriate dress and appearance for school, copies of which will be made available to parents and students. Items list-ed below shall be included in all school guidelines and shall apply to all students. Accommoda-tions will be made by the school principal or principal’s designee for those students who, because of a sincerely held religious be-lief, cultural heritage or medical reason, request a waiver of a particular guideline for dress or appearance. The superintendent shall establish appropriate pro-cedures and regulations for re-quests and disposition of waiver requests. Accommodations shall be made by the principal to ac-commodate students involved in special duties, vocational classes and projects, special events or other activities that would allow for nonconforming dress on a school campus.

• Clothing must be age ap-propriate, not disruptive to the teaching-learning process and cannot be provocative, indecent, vulgar or obscene.

• Hats, sweatbands, bandan-nas or sunglasses will not be worn inside the school buildings.

• Shorts must be of adequate

length to reach the ends of one’s fingertips when the student is standing and the arms are by one’s sides.

• Skirts and dresses must be no higher than three (3) inches above the top of the knee.

• Clothing will not be allowed which promotes alcoholic bev-erages, tobacco or the use of controlled substances, depicts violence, profanity, vulgarity or obscenity, is of a sexual nature or is of a disruptive nature.

• Shirts and blouses must cov-er the waist and midriff and go past the waistline. Tank tops or spaghetti-strap tops may not be worn as an outer garment.

• Footwear is required. Bed-room shoes are not allowed. Students in laboratory or shop environments must wear closed-toe shoes. Students in physical education classes must wear athletic shoes. Shoes that have laces must be laced and tied.

• Clothing is not to be sheer or mesh and cannot have excessive holes.

• Undergarments are not to be visible.

• Clothing must be worn ap-propriately (nothing inside-out or backwards, no rolled-up pant legs or unfastened bibbed overalls, no sagging pants, belts must be buckled and worn at the waistline, etc.).

• Clothing will not be allowed that is intentionally shredded or torn.

• Tight clothing such as knit or spandex bicycle/biker pants or overly tight pants is not allowed.

• Students shall not wear clothing articles with the intent to convey membership or affilia-tion in a gang.

• There shall be no jewelry af-fixed to a student’s nose, tongue, lips, cheeks or eyebrows.

uniform Student clothing

The Board of Education au-thorizes schools to implement programs in which students are required to wear uniform cloth-ing at school during the regular school day. The required wear-ing of uniform school clothing is intended to allow students to focus on instructional objectives of the school, favorably impact student attitude, promote harmo-ny among students and enhance the image of the school. Each school’s plan for uniform school clothing must be developed and approved according to the pro-cedures and timeline set forth in this policy. The Superintendent must approve all such plans be-fore they are implemented at the school level.

ApprovAl proceSS When a principal and School

Leadership Team (SLT)

have decided to develop a plan for uniform school clothing for their school, the principal shall notify the Superintendent that their school has begun this process and submit a proposed timeline.

When the proposed plan has been finalized by the SLT and principal, but before surveys are conducted, the principal must submit the proposed plan to the Superintendent for a preliminary review.

Upon completion of the survey, the principal shall forward the survey results to the Superinten-dent.

The Superintendent shall review and approve proposed plans that meet the requirements of this policy.

School plans will be imple-mented at the beginning of the school year. Final approval by the Superintendent of the pro-posed plan must be obtained a minimum of six months prior to the first day of the school year in which the plan will be imple-mented. Notification of parents of the implementation of a plan for uniform student clothing must be provided to parents within five (5) days of the Super-intendent’s approval.

plAnning

Each SLT and principal shall work together to develop the school’s proposed plan. The proposed plan must address the expected effects of the plan on:

• Safety

• School spirit

• Student discipline

• School iden-

tity

• Other effects

The proposed plan must ad-dress the following elements of uniform clothing design:

• Colors

• Logos (may be added to indi-vidual articles of clothing)

• Particular articles of clothing (e.g. skirts, shorts, slacks, shirts, vests, jackets, accessories)

The proposed plan must ad-dress the following:

• How clothing will be made available for low income stu-dents

• Accommodations for stu-dents for whom wearing particu-lar attire is part of their religious practice

• Accommodations for stu-dents whose health would be ad-versely affected by wearing the uniform clothing

• Procedures to allow students to wear or display accessory items that do not contribute to disruption or interfere with disci-pline or the rights of others

• Connection with the school’s discipline and character educa-tion plans

• Penalties for non-compliance

• Involvement of various par-ent groups in promoting the plan

• Timing of implementation

pArent SurveyS After developing the proposed

plan according to this policy, par-ents must be surveyed.

The parents/guardians of each student currently enrolled in a school must be given the oppor-tunity to agree or disagree with the implementation of the pro-posed plan through a paper sur-vey form. One survey form per family will be provided regard-less of the number of children enrolled in the school.

In order for the proposed plan to proceed forward in the ap-proval process, 70% of the po-tential respondents must register a response and, of those who respond, 65% must indicate their agreement with the proposed plan. Failure to obtain a response level or level of agreement equal to or greater than the percent-ages above stops the process for that school year. Principals and school leadership teams may consider developing a plan for uniform clothing each year.

review of plAnS

The principal and SLT of schools that implement uniform school clothing plans will evalu-ate the plans and will survey parents/guardians at least every 5 years to determine if continued interest in the plan exists. In order for the plan to continue, 70% of the potential respondents must register a response and, of those who respond, 65% must in-dicate their support for continu-ing the plan.

Does your list of school supplies include sleep? Studies say it should, especially for teens.

Only 8 percent of American teenagers are getting the required nine or more hours of sleep needed, according to the National Sleep Foundation. In fact, a recent study published in the “Journal of Adolescent Health” found that more than 60 percent of high school students get less than seven hours of sleep per night. The situation does not improve in college, either. A 2010 study conducted at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota revealed, not surprisingly, that 70 percent of college students get less than the 8 recommended hours of sleep.

While most people have, at times, battled sleep issues, poor sleep habits plague college campuses. Let’s face it - most college kids do not place a premium on a good night’s rest. In addition to sleep falling low on the priority list, most students are sleeping on cheap dorm mattresses and worn out pillows - which can affect sleep quality.

Perhaps reminding your student that there is a proven relationship between healthy sleep habits and academic success might help encourage healthier habits. In 2010, a University of Minnesota study found a significant positive correlation between the amount of sleep per night and GPA. Additionally, as the average number of days per week a student got less than five hours of sleep

increased, GPA decreased.Once a pattern of bad

sleep has developed, is it possible for teens and college students to “reset” their internal clocks? Researchers at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine say it is. Suggest that your students try following these tips, a little bit at a time, over several weeks:

• Try your best to avoid caffeine, smoking, alcohol, heavy exercise and heavy snacking (pizza included) at least three hours before bedtime.

• Don’t pull all-nighters or cram for exams late at night. Specifically schedule studying for when you’re most alert so your performance won’t be affected.

• Be as consistent as possible with your sleep habits, ideally aiming to go to bed at the same time each evening and get at least eight hours of sleep per night.

• Wake up at the same time every morning and head outside. Sunlight helps reset circadian rhythms, the body’s internal biological process that rotates around a 24-hour schedule.

• Turn off your cell phone and laptop at night. Besides being a distraction, exposure to light can suppress the production of melatonin, a hormone that aids sleep.

• Make sure your bedroom is set up for sleep. If you are a light sleeper or your dorm is noisy, try wearing earplugs

or noise-cancelling headphones. Keep the room cool and dark. Make your bed as comfortable as possible. Consider investing in a foam mattress pad and a quality pillow. For example, for around $100, you can purchase a mattress topper and a waterbase pillow, both of which greatly improve head, neck and back support while you sleep.

“While you most likely cannot control the amount of sleep your teens or college-aged kids receive, at least you can make sure that once they are in bed, the sleep they do

get is of the best quality,” explains Maurice Bard, founder and CEO of Mediflow Inc., a company that makes waterbase bed pillows. “One simple way to accomplish this is to make sure your teens are sleeping on the right pillow - one that adjusts to properly support their head and neck throughout the night.”

Countless studies have shown that people who get the right amount of sleep are physically and emotionally healthier - which is of course is something we all want for our children. Getting better grades is just the icing on the cake.

The start of a new school year is like a fresh box of crayons - full of possibilities.

Ginny Bean, mother of three and publisher of Ginny’s catalog, suggests families take advantage of this clean slate by estab-lishing some new organiz-ing routines.

Think ahead. Morn-ings are chaotic in most households with school-aged children. Consider handling as many daytime preparations as possible the night before. Lay out clothes. Pack lunches. Set out the breakfast dishes and cereal. Pack back-packs.

Bean suggests making systems kid-friendly, so young helpers can feel involved, and save mom some time in the pro-cess. “Carve out a spot on a lower shelf of the pantry for lunch boxes and lunch-making sup-plies. Then make children responsible for putting away their empty lunch boxes at the end of the school day, or even pack-ing their own lunch.”

Tackle school paper-work. Make a habit of sorting through children’s backpacks with them the same day they come home. Allot time after school, when you arrive home from work, or after dinner, depending on your family’s schedule. Use a tiered letter sorter or filing system with designated slots for each child’s pa-pers, and an “A.S.A.P.” space for teachers’ notes, permission slips and any-thing else that requires immediate attention.

For schoolwork and artwork you want to keep, try a two-step approach. First, purge unwanted items as soon as they come in the door. Collect the possible keepers in a storage bin or wheeled cart with

color-coded drawers that allow for easy separation by child or project type. Go through stored items at regular intervals, per-haps once a month or once a quarter. Keep in mind, the more you ac-cumulate, the easier it will be to pare down, as the best pieces will stand out from the crowd.

Designate a homework spot. Decide on the best spot in your home to set up homework central. Take into consideration how involved you need to be with homework and your child’s style. Does he focus better with people around or in a private setting? Is he better suited to sit at a desk or curled up in a favorite chair with a lap-top cart?

Once you have a place picked out, gather to-gether handy homework tools and supplies into a nearby bin, drawer or cabinet. Stock up on age-appropriate supplies such as pens, pencils, erasers, paper, crayons, markers, a ruler, diction-ary, calculator and a pencil sharpener.

Create a communica-tion hub. Include the family calendar, a chalk or bulletin board for posting messages and reminders, a binder for key documents, colored markers, pens and pen-cils. If you’re a visual person, consider color coding your calendar by assigning each fam-ily member a different color.

Remember not to for-get. Use wall hooks and baskets or bins near the front door to corral the items you need to re-member each day: back-packs, books, lunches, gym shoes, sports equip-ment and musical instru-ments.Courtesy of ARAcontent

Creative and healthier after-school snack ideas

When school starts, kids’ schedules fill up fast, and that means they need the right fuel to keep their grow-ing bodies and minds satisfied. After a long day of learning, kids require a snack that will get them through homework, after-school sports and other activities until dinner is served. Before you reach for the default bag of chips, consider these healthier alterna-tives that are just as easy and convenient.

Creative, healthier after-school snack ideas that your kids will gobble up:

Delight in dip

It’s no secret kids love to dip, so make after-school snacking more interesting by provid-ing dip along with fresh fruit, veggies and crack-ers. Instead of salad dressing, change things up by mixing a single serve apple sauce cup with two tablespoons of peanut butter for a healthier dip alterna-tive. Watch as your little ones wolf down their carrots, celery, apples, pretzels and more. Par-ents love that this dip option has many nutri-tional benefits - the ap-ple sauce in it is a good source of vitamin C and peanut butter is packed with protein.

Refresh with frozen apple sauce

Apple sauce has been a snacking staple for years, but now you can add a little excitement to those prepackaged apple packs. Simply buy Tree Top apple sauce cups, made with 100 percent USA apples, and place them in the freezer for a tasty treat similar to sorbet, and a healthier alternative to most ice cream and frozen snacks. Kids can grab them on their own when they get home from school so mom and dad don’t have to lift a finger. Stock up on Tree Top apple juice boxes, too, for a complemen-tary, easy grab-and-go drink option.

Wrap it up

Keeping whole wheat tortillas on hand is a smart move for any parent because they are extremely versa-tile. When kids come home from school hungry, it’s easy to take a tortilla and fill it with their favorite nutritious fillings. For example, spread with classic peanut butter and jelly, add some ba-nana and honey, or fill with turkey and moz-zarella for a satisfying snack that keeps kids focused through all their homework.

Happily hydrated

Making sure your kids are hydrated is an impor-tant part of keeping them healthy and feeling great each day. When kids are busy at school and with after-school activities, they can become dehydrated quickly. Instead of sug-ary sodas, choose a more nutritious alternative like Tree Top reduced sugar 100 percent fruit juices. These tasty and refresh-ing drinks are made with hydrating coconut water and no artificial sweeten-ers and have 25 percent less sugar than regular 100 percent juices.

A smooth finish to the school day

Smoothies are a fun way for kids to get a ton

of nutrients in one single drink. It’s easy for parents to stock up on frozen fruit at the local grocery store. Then, when kids get home, they can choose what fla-vors they want and you can blend the fruit with low-fat milk, yogurt and ice for a cool and delicious drink. You might even sneak in a few veggies by adding a splash of vegetable juice, or a couple pre-steamed vegetables like carrots, kale or squash. The fruit flavors are so robust, your kids won’t even notice the veggies.

Healthy after-school snacks don’t have to be boring or bland. Try these ideas and you can feel good about what your kids eat - they may love them so much they’ll be re-questing them every day.Courtesy of ARAcontent

Five ways to help kids boost their brain powerEveryone is born with

about 100 billion brain cells. We form new con-nections between these cells throughout life, but the rate is particu-larly high when we’re young. Since those connections facilitate thinking and learning, parents who want to help give their children an intellectual edge should consider the brain-healthy choices they make each day.

“Making the effort to nurture your child’s brain with both proper nutrients and varied experiences, especially when they are young and developing at such a fast rate, is crucial,” says speech pathologist Lauren Zimet, founder of Early Insights, LLC, and an expert on child-hood brain develop-ment. “The connections in brain circuitry can be enhanced through the environments and activ-ities a child is exposed to, and participates in, as well as the nutrients a child consumes.”

Zimet offers five tips to help parents enhance healthy brain develop-ment in their children, positioning them for success in school today, and well into their fu-ture:

Select a rainbow

It’s no secret that the benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables are numerous, but thanks to the results of ongo-ing research, you can confidently add brain health to that list. En-courage your children to eat a colorful array of produce (organic when possible) each day so they get the an-

tioxidants, vitamins and minerals needed to nourish and protect their growing brains. If your child is resistant to eating produce, en-courage them to come shopping with you and select something new to try. Kids are more likely to eat what they have selected themselves.

Relax the right way

While it’s true that exercise boosts brain power, it’s also impor-tant to teach children how to relax. Balanc-ing activity with relax-ation is important so that kids don’t get too stressed, which can impact the brain’s de-velopment and lead to learning and behavior problems.

Teaching children early on the benefit of setting goals, working towards those goals, and giving their brain and body time to relax are important life skills. When it’s time to relax, skip the TV and teach your child that taking a walk in nature, reading a book or drawing are great ways to unwind. Deep breathing is also an excellent practice to teach children of all ages.

Eat omega-3 brain food

Omega-3 essential fatty acids are critical to a child’s brain devel-opment. They are called “essential” because we need them for optimal health. The problem is that our bodies can-not manufacture them and we can only get them from the food we eat or supplements we take. While fish, nuts

and seaweed are good omega-3 sources, kids typically don’t gobble down these foods. That leaves many parents worried that their kids aren’t getting enough, and with omega-3 defi-cits linked to ADHD, dyslexia and other behavioral and psy-chological disorders, many are turning to supplements for their children. Experts agree that the safest, most reliable source of the most important essen-tial fatty acids (EPA and DHA) is a high quality fish oil supplement. Fortunately, there are purified, molecularly distilled fish oil supple-

ments that are manu-factured with kids in mind. Parents should be sure to choose one of these chewable, tasty options like those by Nordic Naturals to en-sure success in getting their children to take the supplements.

Happy brains are hydrated brains

Staying hydrated is important for growing brains and bodies. Wa-ter can improve energy, increase mental and physical performance, remove toxins and waste from the body, and keep skin healthy and glowing. Based on

the trillions of cells in the body that need wa-ter to function, most nutritionists agree that children need more, not less H20. To estimate how many ounces of water your child should drink daily, divide his or her weight in half and aim for that num-ber of ounces per day.

Be a positive support system early on

Learning is a complex process, but children will be more open to trying new things when they know their par-ents believe in them. Acknowledging effort, instead of the outcome,

strengthens a child’s belief in himself or her-self. Teaching goal set-ting, prioritizing activi-ties and working off of check lists exercises the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in the brain. Experi-mentation through trial and error is the way the brain learns best.

“Giving your child’s brain what it needs to grow strong can help him or her at school and in all social situ-ations,” adds Zimet. “Utilizing these tips is a great way to help position your child for success in the coming school year, and be-yond.”Courtesy of ARAcontent

While most adults can recall someone in their school that was always picked on — or can tell a story of being bullied them-selves — the change we see in today’s society is the extreme pressure and the relentless use of social media that makes it impossible for the vic-tim to escape. This 24/7 exposure is resulting in very tragic outcomes – suicide, dropouts, and revenge attacks on school grounds.

“I wanted to make sure we never have one of those horrible head-lines here in Wilson,” said Erika Dietrick.

Dietrick started the Wilson Youth Council’s anti-bullying program as an outreach to teens. She was recognized as both the 2012 NC Jaycees Most Outstand-ing Teen and the 2012 NC Most Outstanding Youth Council Member for her leadership in the project. She is a re-cent graduate of Hunt High School and WYC alumni member. While Dietrick has graduated from the youth council, and will be attending ECU Honors College in the fall, the council has committed to continuing the project into the new school year.

The Wilson Youth Council will be pre-senting their research findings and new proj-ect ideas at the Wilson Gang Taskforce Confer-ence on Bullying and

Gangs on Friday, Octo-ber 26. The conference is for teachers, profes-sionals and parents.

The WYC will present a skit about the effect of bullying and share their research findings after surveying more than 1,200 Wilson high school students.

The anti-bullying proj-ect is most recognized by a bright white oval sticker, with bold purple letters which reads, “SMH@BULLYING”. Most adults would rec-ognize the popular oval shape to be similar to the OBX (outer banks) window decals, but the message might be lost.

The initials “SMH” stand for “shaking my head”. It is a disapprov-ing message often used in texting, tweeting and on Facebook (ask most any teen, and they will look at you with a “duh” face).

The WYC developed a sticker, wide silicone purple bracelets, a sur-vey and petitions, all incorporating the new message.

WYC will add to the program this year with two new projects.

The first is a poster contest. Each high school will hold an in-ternal contest for the best originally designed anti-bullying poster. Students will submit their poster designs to the guidance office at their individual school. The top three from each school will then be judged by the SMH Team to select one win-ner.

The winning design

will be used by the WYC to create an anti-bully-ing message that will be distributed to all high schools.

The second project will be a new action plan to help teens un-derstand how to coun-teract bullying. WYC will again host “Mix It Up Day” in October. This is an opportunity for students to mix up who they sat with dur-ing lunch. This helps with breaking down barriers. Students will be encourages to sign the SMH pledge which calls student to action to break the bullying triangle.

The bullying triangle consists of three parts: (1) the bully, (2) the victim, and (3) the bystander. The major-ity of those involved in bullying are the by-standers. The people, who let it slide, remain silent, make an excuse, laugh or just walk away. Laughing encourages bullies. Silence is a per-mission slip to continue.

Throughout the year, the WYC will be pro-moting actions to help bystanders know what to do, how to safely stand up, speak out and counteract the bullying.

The WYC goals are to hold awareness pro-grams in the schools, have community pro-grams for parents and to change the culture in schools.

WYC is an award-win-ning council. The Gov-ernor’s Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office awarded the WYC the 2012 “NC Most Diverse

Wilson Youth Council Takes a Stand Against Bullying

Council” award. In addi-tion, WYC received the “NC Most Outstanding State Youth Council” in both 2011 and 2008.

The Wilson Youth Council will hold an Open House for new members on Monday, September 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the city council chambers in town hall, located at 112 Golds-boro Street.

The WYC focuses on leadership and com-munity service. It is free

and open for member-ship to all high school students in Wilson dur-ing the fall semester. WYC is sponsored by the City of Wilson’s Hu-man Relations Office.
