Due to access to Genesis, Progress reports are no longer issued.

Report cards are issued 4x per year: Nov, Feb, April, June Formal conferences are in Nov. (sign up for a time) but we

could schedule a conference to meet any time throughout the year.

• The purpose for assigning homework is to practice skills and develop good work habits.

• Homework is given every night Monday- Thursday.• Usually 3 pieces of homework: Math, Spelling, Reading• Check student planner for HW assignments• If students miss homework more than 1x per marking

period, he/she will stay in for recess to complete the missed work.

Student’s Responsibilities:• To listen to/ read directions, ask questions when something is unclear• To gather all materials necessary to complete assignments before

leaving the classroom• To complete all assignments to the best of his/her ability• To return materials and assignments on time and make up missed HW

Family’s Responsibilities:• To provide a routine and environment that is conducive to doing HW• To offer assistance to the student, but not do the actual homework• To notify the teacher when homework presents a problem• To read school notices and respond in a timely manner. Homework and

school notices will travel home in the student’s HW folder.

• New spelling words are given on Monday and stapled into the student planner

• Theme words from the weekly unit are also listed as “Amazing Words” and “High Frequency words”

• Students are expected to complete homework using the spelling list but will be given bonus words each week from the “High Frequency words”.

• - -We do word study activities all week with words- -There is spelling homework each night to be completed - in spelling notebook– check the planner• - Test is Friday

Classwork• Blending Book: These books should be brought home

and reviewed briefly each night. We do review these everyday in school.

• Comprehension & Vocabulary Book: Each week questions and vocabulary words related to our current story we will be glued in this notebook. Students will complete questions in class independently as well as with a partner on occasion.

• Writer’s Notebook: We try and use this book on a daily basis

to complete various writing prompts, pen pal letters journal entries throughout the year.• Pen Pals

READING STREETEach unit centers on a theme. For example, Unit 1 is Exploration.Units are systematic and follow a logical progression to enable understanding and mastery. Part 1 : Preparing to Read – focuses on the foundations including phonemic awareness, sounds and letters, phonics, fluency, and word knowledgePart 2 : Emphasizes reading for understanding or comprehensionPart 3 : Language Arts – focuses on communication skills such as spelling, vocabulary, the writing process, and grammar

We use the laptops once a week to implement the Rosetta Stone program to learn Spanish. Children

learn at their own pace and move from one lesson to the next based on mastery of words and phrases in

listening and speaking the language.

AttendanceIf your child is going to be absent from school, please call the nurse Mrs. Falk and let her know that your child will not be in school.

Homework FoldersPlease check your child’s folder EVERY night for important information, homework sheets, notices, and corrected work.

Tests Any test that comes home in the Homework Folder can stay at home, unless it requires your signature.

BirthdaysPlease send in treats that are PEANUT-FREE (with their nutritional labels so we can check ingredients). Usually cupcakes, donuts, or cookies are sent in for birthdays. No cakes please.

“Top Banana”Each week we will celebrate a different student with our “Top Banana” board. A sheet will be sent home with the chosen student to fill out and return to school. Send in any photographs that you would like to be displayed. They will be returned at the end of the week.

***If there is a change in where your child goes after school or how he/she gets home, please call the office or send a note. Without that, I am not allowed to do what is out of the ordinary.

If you would like to volunteer to teach something to the class, share your profession or just read a book to the class at all during the year, sign your name on the volunteer sheet.

Please write down your name on the Class Parent list if you are interested. Responsibilities include organizing treats / crafts for class parties, field trip chaperone (if available)
