In the words of Youth Leader, Loren Cooper, “Nobody should be able to tell

you anything about yourselves. You should know who God says you are!” I wanted to shout out, “Yes! Yes!” across the room, as Loren facilitated the Youth Season Reflection with our youth. It is true. Our young people have been studying who God says we are since last October in Bible Study. This conversation continued in Vacation Bible School with activities and Scripture studies to help them really think about their identity in the eyes of God. It gives me great joy to know that some of them have internalized what the Bible says about them, just how much God loves them and the plans and purpose God has for their lives. The result is our youth learn to love God and love themselves!

The Youth of the Year, Jahleel Hills is definitely an example to the youth and adults of what it means to believe who God says you are. He walks with confidence and is not ashamed to declare he is a young man of God and a Christian; whether he is in church, school, or BCD. This doesn’t mean Jahleel and our other youth will not have to deal with the ups and downs of life, but they do so with a hope and trust in the God, who says they are conquerors.

I’m grateful to each of our Youth Leaders for the sacrifices they make to not just work with our children, but to “be there” for them. I’m also excited that many of our Youth Leaders take their roles as God-Bearers and Holy Mentors to our youth seriously. Melida Hunter, our Youth Leader of the year certainly demonstrates what it means to make a commitment to grow spiritually and then allow God to use her to minister to our young people.

As one member of the congregation said after Youth Day, “Those kids led us into worship.” That is the greatest testimony to the spiritual growth of our young people and what God is doing in their lives and the life of our church! We are building right relationships across generational lines.

As we continue to pursue excellence in all that we do, I believe God will do even greater things in our midst. Our young people are in fact a chosen generation and God will use them to do mighty things in our church and the community.

TIP OF THE MONTH

For parents with children in elementary school, be sure to label anything that you send them to school with. Write their names on the tags of

sweaters, lunch bags, book bags, you name it! You will be surprised how many other students in your child’s school, would have the same denim jacket

or Sponge Bob lunch box. Save yourself the headache of having to guess which one navy blue sweater out of 10, belong to your child in the lost

and found bin.

SCRIPTURE OF THE MONTH

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

1 Peter 2:9 (NIV)

Cooking with Coleen

What you’ll need: Cooking spray 6 ripe bananas 2 oz. butter 1 cup orange juice

BAKED BANANAS

Grease ovenproof dish to hold the amount bananas required. Peel bananas and sprinkle with 1

tablespoon of sugar for each banana. Pour enough orange juice or milk to come half way

up the side of the dish. Dot with butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

Serve warm or cold with your choice of chilled creams - evaporated milk, delicious coconut cream

or ice-cream.

WORD OF THE MONTH

Juvenescent

[joo-vuh-nes-uh nt] adj. becoming young or youthful

ASPIRE TO INSPIRE Who inspires me? This past youth season had me thinking about where I am now and the people who inspired me. This was probably the hardest article I ever had to write. Not because I did not know who inspired me or who I want to inspire, but because it forced me to stare at where I am in life, where I have come from and where I can go. (The possibilities are ENDLESS). I can go through a long (very long) list of the great members of Berean who have helped shaped me into the woman and artist that I am today, but I won't. Although I will not individually name names, I do want to thank the members for allowing me to share my gifts and talents no matter what they may be - from dancing to doing makeup, to being an artistic/creative director and now a writer. The members of Berean have inspired me to try new things and when those things get old, to try something new. Who I seek to inspire? I would love to be able to inspire the youth - not just the Youth of Berean, BCD, or my Upward Bound ATL students. But any and ALL students I come in contact with. The world is constantly changing and you have the opportunity to do anything and EVERYTHING you can possibly dream up. MOST IMPORTANTLY, take the limits off of God. He can and WILL do EXCEEDINGLY and ABUNDANTLY above all we can ask or think. So think of your biggest most outlandish dream... double it... crazy... now triple it... multiply it by ten! HUGE RIGHT? And that still is not even the tip of the iceberg. So, I know this makeup/beauty and writing world, I have found myself in, is just the beginning on my journey. I am excited to see where it all takes me! From the bottom of my heart, I just want to say thank you. Thank you Berean for always serving as an inspiration to me. Until Next Time Berean Beauties, K. PREVENT HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

High blood pressure in young and middle-aged adults could mean heart trouble. Studies show that 19 percent of young adults have high blood pressure. An ounce of prevention: Because blood pressure rises as body weight increases (and obesity is a known risk factor for developing high cholesterol and diabetes which in turn, can lead to heart disease) a loss of as little as 10 pounds can help to lower blood pressure. Making lifestyle changes while you are still young can lower the risk that your blood pressure will rise with age:

strive to maintain a healthy weight make vegetables and fruits half of every meal the other half should contain healthy protein and whole grain carbohydrates reduce salt intake drink water daily, instead of sugary beverages stay physically active - get at least 30 minutes of moderate to intense exercise per

day talk to your healthcare provider about establishing your "baseline" blood pressure

According to the American Heart Association, the recommendation for healthy blood pressure is defined as:

NORMAL - systolic is less than 120 and diastolic is less than 80

PREHYPERTENSION - systolic is less than 120-139 or diastolic is 80-89

HYPERTENSION (High blood pressure) Stage 1: Systolic is 140-159 or diastolic is 90-99 Stage 2: Systolic is 160 or higher or diastolic is 100 or higher Stage 3: Systolic is higher than 180 or diastolic is

higher than 110 (emergency care needed)

How is high blood pressure diagnosed? Your healthcare providers will want to get an accurate picture of your blood pressure and chart what happens over time. A single high reading does not necessarily mean that you have high blood pressure. Blood pressures can change from minute to minute with changes in posture, exercise, stress or sleep. *Even if your blood pressure is normal, you should consider making lifestyle modifications to prevent the development of high blood pressure and improve your health.

For youth, life is filled with countless possibilities. As you get older, you start thinking of how these

possibilities can become reality – how your hopes and dreams can become goals. When I was

young, at first, I did not know what I wanted to do. But I thought about the fact that I loved helping people and so decided to become a registered nurse. Youth, always believe in yourself and

never give up on your dreams or goals because those are the things that are going to make your

future bright. Always put God first!
