ONE-‐LINER Backtrack is a spine-‐chilling ghost story from the acclaimed writer-‐director, Michael Petroni.
SHORT SYNOPSIS Psychologist Peter Bower’s life is thrown into turmoil when he discovers that the patients he has been seeing are ghosts. Risking his own sanity, Peter delves into his past to uncover a terrifying secret which only he can put right. Backtrack is a spine-‐chilling ghost story from the acclaimed writer-‐director, Michael Petroni.
LONG SYNOPSIS Having recently weathered the loss of his 12 year-‐old daughter Evie, psychologist Peter Bower and his wife Carol relocate back to Melbourne -‐ where they first met -‐ to start afresh. Old friend and mentor, Dr Duncan Steward organises patient referrals from a psychiatric clinic for Peter to help restore some semblance of normality to his life, however things are far from normal.
3
Troubled by the peculiarities of his patients, Peter delves into their history and discovers to his astonishment that every one of them died within hours of each other on July 12th 1987. Realising he is being haunted by his past, Peter returns to his hometown to finally face a secret he has kept for 23 years. We discover that as a teenage boy he was responsible for the derailment of a train, causing the death of 47 passengers. It soon becomes apparent that Peter’s ghostly patients are holding the soul of his daughter hostage. Peter then confronts his strained relationship with his father William and his childhood friend Barry (who was with him on the night of the accident), and decides to confess his secret to local police officer Barbara Henning -‐ whose mother was killed in the derailment -‐ at the local police station. Henning looks deeper into the case while the ghosts impel Peter to look deeper into his fractured memory of that fateful night. Peter returns to the scene of the accident where the truth about the tragedy is revealed through a series of flashbacks. After a tension filled climax, the ghosts are finally laid to rest, as is the soul of Peter’s daughter.
PRODUCTION NOTES Writer/director Michael Petroni began making preliminary notes for what would become the spine-‐chilling ghost story BACKTRACK as he was writing TILL HUMAN VOICES WAKE US (2002). While pursuing a successful screenwriting career in Hollywood, Petroni let the story germinate in his mind over the years. By the time shooting commenced (in early January 2014) he had storyboarded the entire film. “To make a movie you’ve got to be collaborative, you’ve got to be inclusive and yet at the same time as a director people want you to make the final decisions. It’s a weird kind of benevolent dictatorship that you’re trying to create”.
Petroni describes BACKTRACK as a “multifaceted genre piece” about the “universal themes of loss, guilt and memory” that remains one step ahead of its audience. Paying homage to such films as DON’T LOOK NOW and THE SIXTH SENSE, Petroni has crafted a screenplay full of dramatic tension and unexpected twists and turns. Boasting a stellar cast, the film is filled with intrigue, thrills and suspense -‐ Backtrack will have the “audience jump out of their seats” says Petroni.
Screen Australia backed the project from an early stage and was instrumental in bringing Petroni back to make films in his homeland after a long hiatus working in the US on such internationally successful films as THE BOOK THIEF, THE RIGHT and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER. Producers Jamie Hilton and Antonia Barnard saw great potential in the film based on the strength of Petroni’s screenplay, the depth of characters and the opportunity to bring the multi-‐faceted plot to the big screen. Says Hilton: “Backtrack is a very clever genre film. It really delivers on an audience’s expectation. Just when you think you know where it's going, it will take an unexpected turn. The film oscillates between a psychological thriller and a mystery”. Screen Australia, UK-‐based sales agent Bankside and Australian distributor Madman Entertainment came on board before Brody, Oscar winner for THE PIANIST and who starred in MIDNIGHT IN PARIS and THE BROTHERS BLOOM, was attached.
CASTING: BACKTRACK was cast by Nikki Barrett (Barrett Casting) and director Michael Petroni. Producer Jamie Hilton says, “All the actors gave such fantastic performances. Nikki Barrett did a great job casting the film with Michael and I couldn’t be happier”. In casting the film, Petroni was looking for a lead actor “with an interior life that can be read on his face” and Adrien Brody was an obvious choice. “Adrien has the kind of face that draws you into his
4
interior world” making him the perfect choice for the role of Peter Bower and the psychological journey we take with him in the film. “Peter Bower has a hidden history and I think everyone can relate to that idea of having something in your past that creeps up on you. It’s the secret of his past that creates the intrigue in the story and takes you on an unexpected journey as it unravels”. Peter Bower’s Australian accent was no obstacle for the accomplished lead, Adrien Brody. Of Brody’s accent, Petroni says, “He did a spot on job. It’s great. I’m really pleased and proud of him for that”. Brody says: “I was a bit concerned with committing to an Australian accent, just because it is challenging to do and I wanted to do it well. It’s a complicated thing because I think you have to find the tone of the individual you’re playing more than just gravitating to sounds. You have to understand and differentiate obviously the dialect and the specificity of that dialect of the cultured, educated man from Melbourne, someone from a farm or from a regional part of Australia, so you have to find where that fits in. It has to sound like you; it has to feel like you, even if it’s very different from yourself. I think one of the interesting things was it helped me find the character more easily because I did sound so different from myself”. The striking similarity between Peter and William Bower (Adrien Brody and George Shevtsov) will not go unnoticed by audiences. Says Petroni: “I can’t believe how similar they are and how much like father and son they really physically are, even in their mannerisms”. Sam Neill is obviously a wonderful asset to the film in the role of Peter’s friend, colleague and confidant Duncan Steward. Says Petroni: “It was a dream come true to work with Sam and Adrien. You know, they’re such great talent. I felt that Adrien and Sam played off each other so well”. PRODUCTION DESIGN: BACKTRACK was designed by Elizabeth Mary Moore whose previous credits include THE TURNING, THE SQUARE and THE ILLUSTRATED FAMILY DOCTOR. Moore’s challenge was in adapting the locations to make them work. “It was pretty clear to me that it would most likely be set-‐build on a location”. The biggest builds were the signal box -‐ which had to be transported to Oberon – and the train wreck. Moore says “Some sets need to be emotionally strong so the train wreck needed to be devastating. You really need to feel this was a really big situation; people had died; it was graphic and it was big chunks of hulking metal that had ripped into people. It needs to feel like it was a tragedy”. COSTUME DESIGN: Costume Designer Justine Seymour’s costumes reflect the colour palette of the film. During the flashbacks of Peter with his daughter Evie, the costumes are brighter and lighter and Peter is in more colourful clothes to reflect happier times, but when the film flashes back to 1987 at the time of the train crash, Seymour naturally chose to go with a completely different colour palette. In designing the ghost characters in the film, Seymour wanted them to appear in the clothes they were wearing when they died in the accident. Elizabeth Valentine is in her school uniform which also helped to make her look very young “because the actress that plays Elizabeth Valentine (Chloe Bayliss) is actually 22 and she’s playing a 14 year old, so to have her in a school uniform was ideal and the fact that she’s very small was very helpful to me. I made her coat a bit bigger and I wanted her to kind of get lost in the hood. The way the DP (Stefan Duscio) played with the light in the hood – it made it more scary.” “The team of make-‐up artists would make the ghosts look more and more dead as the story became more and more obvious to Peter Bower. Bower’s awareness opens up and he realises what he’s seeing, and, as he realises, so does the audience”. Anna Lise Phillips who plays Erica George, explains: “Not only am I playing a ghost, I’m playing an English woman. There are three stages of development (for my character). There’s the normal,
5
there’s the train accident and then there’s death. You find yourself decomposing within the period of one day, and it’s very detailed work.”
ABOUT THE CAST ADRIEN BRODY (PETER BOWER) Adrien Brody won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of real-‐life Holocaust survivor Wladislaw Szpilman in Roman Polanski's THE PIANIST. He is to date the youngest person to have received the Oscar in that category. His performance also earned him Best Actor honors from the National Society of Film Critics and the Boston Society of Film Critics, and nominations for Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA Awards. He was also bestowed with the Cesar Award, France's equivalent of the Oscar -‐ the only non-‐French citizen to do so. Most recently, Brody was seen in Wes Anderson’s critically lauded film, GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, and starred in the History Channel’s HOUDINI, a two-‐night original event, which debuted as the most-‐watched cable miniseries of the year, on September 1 and 2, 2014. His performance as the world’s most revered magician was lauded as “dynamic” (Allison Keene, The Hollywood Reporter) and “mesmerizing…a complex, tormented character” (Brooks Barnes, New York Times). Coming off the success of these projects and with six films on the horizon, 2015 is poised to be a big year for Brody. Upcoming films include AMERICAN HEIST, which premiered at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival; the Wayne Blair-‐directed SEPTEMBERS OF SHIRAZ opposite Salma Hayek, based on the best-‐selling novel and DRAGON BLADE with Jackie Chan. He will play the lead roles in the Lee Tamahori-‐directed film EMPEROR (chronicling the reign of Emperor Charles V), followed by a Brian DeCubellis-‐directed adaptation of the Colin Harrison novel, MANHATTAN NOCTURNE. Earlier in 2014 at the Cannes Film Festival, he announced the launch of his production company, Fable House Ltd. With $50 million in development and production funding from Beijing-‐based Sparkle Roll Cultural Media Co. Ltd. (50% owned by Jackie Chan) and entrepreneur Kola Alukoto, Brody will begin producing films for the Chinese and international marketplace. It has a slate of pictures, including the aforementioned MANHATTAN NOCTURNE. He has worked with some of the most prominent film directors in the industry: Paul Haggis (THIRD PERSON); Roman Polanski (THE PIANIST); Peter Jackson (KING KONG); Ken Loach (BREAD AND ROSES); Wes Anderson (THE DARJEELING LIMITED and GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL); Barry Levinson (LIBERTY HEIGHTS); Spike Lee (SUMMER OF SAM); Xiaogang Feng (REMEMBERING 1942); Tony Kaye (DETACHMENT); and Woody Allen (MIDNIGHT IN PARIS). Some other films in his filmography include: HARRISON’S FLOWERS; LOVE THE HARD WAY; THE JACKET; HOLLYWOODLAND; CADILLAC RECORDS; THE BROTHERS BLOOM; SPLICE; and PREDATORS. Brody first came to prominence when he played a leading role in Steven Soderbergh's KING OF THE HILL and for starring performances in two features for director Eric Bross: TEN BENNY and RESTAURANT. The latter earned Brody an Independent Spirit Award nomination. He was born and raised in New York City, where he studied drama at LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Adrien Brody was particularly attracted to the project by the strength of its script: “When I read a script, I know if I find the elements truthful or not, and I loved the script – you know, it just worked – with characters who have depth and flaws and a complexity of real life within heightened situations”. “One of the joys of being an actor is discovering the unfamiliar and putting yourself in other people’s shoes. It gives you greater insight in real life, not only just the characters you portray, but understanding – for instance suffering and struggles that other human beings are going through that you’ve cultivated an understanding of, so you gain empathy through that”.
6
Brody describes the vulnerability of his character, Peter Bower: “One of the hardships that Peter is enduring -‐ and his wife is enduring – is the loss of their child, and that alone is such an unfathomable thing; the level of loss and the grief that comes with that, which informs so much. To play someone that has not only the loss but a sense of guilt and responsibility; I think people can relate to loss even if they haven't had that specific experience, but if it's an honest interpretation of that, if it's an honest connection with that, then they are with you on your journey”. Brody praised the beauty and meaning within the project and describes his experience of working with Michael Petroni: “The beauty of making movies is it is a collaboration and when you work with someone that is open and gracious and intelligent, there’s a real burst of communication and creativity. That’s what I strive for, that’s what I look for and that’s what I hope for -‐ an intelligent script that is also commercially viable and has all the thrilling things that an audience wants to see but which also has the depth that the audience deserves. Backtrack is profoundly moving as well as thrilling”. “I think there’s enough mystery to reel just about anybody in. I want people to be pulled into the story. Let go of their life and let go of the things that are on their mind”. Brody loved working in Australia: “The Australian crew was wonderful. I think culturally there’s a kind of ease here and people communicate in a calm and straightforward manner and I like that. Maybe it’s something in the water, but Australia churns out some very talented actors. It was a wonderful privilege to work with gifted people and people who are so committed to their work”. SAM NEILL (DUNCAN STEWARD) A recipient of an Order of the British Empire for Services to Acting and a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, Sam Neill is internationally recognised for his contribution to film and television. Most recently Neill featured in OLD SCHOOL for Matchbox Pictures opposite Bryan Brown. He also stars alongside Cillian Murphy in PEAKY BLINDERS for the BBC. “Peter is in a state of trauma at the beginning of the film and he needs help. He needs to look at his stuff, he needs to look at himself, he needs to look at his life, he needs to look at his marriage, he needs to address things. He can’t run away anymore. You can run, but you cannot hide. That’s the message of the film”. – Sam Neill plays ‘Duncan Steward’.

You can’t escape your past”. “It’s quite uncanny – the likeness between me and Adrien Brody. It’s scary. I have a friend who when he first saw Adrien Brody at the Academy Awards thought that Adrien Brody was my love child. He only told me this story recently, and before coming on to set I watched a few films again of his and it’s astonishing – sometimes I’m looking at myself” -‐ George Shevtsov plays ‘William Bower.’ ROBIN MCLEAVY (BARBARA HENNING) After graduating from Australia’s most prestigious drama school, NIDA, Robin McLeavy established herself as the country’s most pre-‐eminent young stage actress, landing starring roles in numerous critically acclaimed productions before emerging on the international scene with a string of film, television and stage credits. In 2014 between shooting the fourth season of HELL ON WHEELS, she has voiced a role in the animated feature BLINKY BILL with Ryan Kwanten. “When I first read the script, I didn’t realise how many parallels there are between the characters. The overriding theme of the script is what it is to inherit grief. Anything that’s unresolved in someone’s family is really inherited by the children and it just depends on how it’s dealt with. Your identity is really shaped by the stories that your family tells you”. – Robin McLeavy plays ‘Barbara Henning’. CHLOE BAYLISS (ELIZABETH VALENTINE) On completion of her Diploma of Dance and Performance at the National College of Dance, Chloe began work on the ABC hit series DANCE ACADEMY, performing the featured role of “Young Natasha”. Chloe was invited to perform with Mystic Ballet Company, Connecticut, in the USA. In her 7 months with Mystic, Chloe performed principal and soloist roles in both the company’s productions (Nutcracker and G.R.A.B). Chloe returned to Australia and began working in the lead role of Nell Saunders in Channel 10’s new series REEF DOCTORS. In between acting projects, Chloe studies a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Film and Performance Studies at The University of Sydney. “I really wanted Elizabeth to be something quite different from the usual scary girl in a film, so I watched a lot of films. On set – for me because Elizabeth doesn’t speak, I had to find a way to convey what she wanted to say without words. I’d spend at least two hours in the make-‐up chair before we’d go on set – eye bags, contact lenses, hair, nails, dirt, everything”. -‐ Chloe Bayliss plays ‘Elizabeth Valentine’. BRUCE SPENCE (FELIX MATTHERS) Throughout his career spanning almost four decades, iconic Australian actor Bruce Spence has been featured in numerous film, television and theatre productions all over the world.

“I record my character as part of the tapestry in the storyline that inhabits the central character’s world and I’m one of those that are there to disturb it. The real essence of the film is what the audience sees of these characters and what they don’t see. They’re shadows -‐ these shadow folk have a symbiotic relationship with Peter. Peter needs us and we need him. That’s all part of the journey towards a resolution”. -‐ Bruce Spence plays ‘Felix Matthers’.
MAL KENNARD (BARRY) Mal Kennard was most recently seen in the ABC series OLD SCHOOL and will next star as Ivan Milat in the new Seven Network drama CATCHING MILAT. Returning to the US in 2004 she filmed pilots (GLOBAL FREQUENCY, CONVICTION) and guest starred in various television dramas before joining the cast of Emmy nominated THE 4400 for its final season in the role of Meghan Doyle. Her first feature film ALIEN TRESPASS afforded her the opportunity to star opposite comedy great Eric McCormack. The birth of her second child brought her back to Australia in 2012 where she has played sinister Regina Standish for two seasons in the epic television melodrama A PLACE TO CALL HOME. “Carol is a grieving mother and has lost her child. It’s the unthinkable and I had to think the unthinkable. You’re watching a man in grief and a man and a wife in an acute state of grief. I believe that Peter Bower is with all of his past and these ghosts are created out of his loss. Similar to the film ‘The Sixth Sense’, there are so many beautiful surprises in this film. You think you’re watching one thing and you discover that you’re watching something completely different.” – Jenni Baird plays ‘Carol Bower’. ANNE LISE PHILLIPS (ERICA GEORGE) Anna Lise Phillips was most recently seen in the Foxtel series, DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, which picks up the story of Fred Schepisi’s classic feature THE DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, the US thriller THE TANK directed by Kelly Madison, and starred in Nick Robertson’s suspense horror THE PACK. Anna Lise is a very proud member of Equity (MEAA) and currently lives a transcontinental life, dividing her time between Australia and the USA. “What really attracted me was the psychology of this film. It’s a thriller, but it’s a psychological thriller about a man dealing with the demons of his past. All of Michael’s work seems to have similar themes. There’s grief, there’s the past, there’s secrets, there’s death – there’s lots of death. Backtrack is about a man who had a dark secret when he was a child and it’s come back to kick his arse, basically”. —Anna Lise Phillips plays ‘Erica George’. EMMA O’FARRELL (EVIE BOWER) Emma was 12 years old when BACKTRACK was filmed and this is her first feature film. “My favourite thing is probably my little stunt where I got grabbed in the darkness and I had a harness on and I get yanked back and land on a mat”. – Emma O’Farrell plays ‘Evie Bower’. STEFAN DUSCIO – CINEMATOGRAPHER
After graduating in Media Arts at RMIT University in Melbourne, Stefan worked in a broad range of visual arts as an illustrator, photographer and graphic designer. Eventually he fell in love with filmmaking and cut his teeth on countless short films and music videos. He has since shot
commercials, documentaries, six feature films and continues his love of shorts and music videos.
Stefan’s most recent film, GALORE, the debut feature film by Rhys Graham, premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2013.
