Protecting Your Data

Backups & Disaster Recovery

Page 2: Backup and Disaster Recovery

Backups:o Would you suffer financial hardships if you experienced a loss

of data?

o Is your data secure?

o What data lies on your computers that would be difficult, if not impossible, to recreate in the case of loss or damage?

o Are you currently backing up your critical data?

No one backup solution is the right one for everyone. Different amounts of data, sensitivity of the data, criticality, ease of access, all must be considered when strategizing a backup plan.SOHO Systems will prepare a customized backup solution proposal after analyzing the systems and type, location and amount of data unique to your environment.

Page 5: Backup and Disaster Recovery

SOHO Systems will install and setup a cloud backup solution:• Create your online storage account• Install and configure the SOHO Remote Backup

client software on laptop and desktop PC’s• Configure file types, locations and priority to be

backed up

Ongoing support includes:• Monitoring backup storage usage and alerting• Telephone and remote access for backup

troubleshooting• On-site support @ $120/hr

Local Backups & Disaster Recovery

Page 7: Backup and Disaster Recovery

Local Backups

• Drag and drop copies• Backup utilities

included with storage devices

Page 8: Backup and Disaster Recovery

Backup: Files and folders are compressed and placed in proprietary formatted filesCopy: Duplicate of a file

Image Backups

• Acronis True Image• Norton Ghost• Windows Backup and

Restore

Page 10: Backup and Disaster Recovery

Image backups create essentially a mirror image copy of your computer, from the boot files, operating system (Windows), programs (Office Word, Excel etc.) to all the data located on your PC’s hard drive.Image backups protect you from hardware failures and severe data corruption from viruses or other malware. With an optional “restore to dissimilar hardware” add-on an image backup can protect you from loss from theft, fire etc. by enabling a full restore to newer or different computer hardware.

BackupsFull, Incremental and Differential Backups

• Full backup is everything you have selected to back up• Incremental is everything that has

changed since the ;last backup• Differential is everything that has

changed since the last full backup

Page 12: Backup and Disaster Recovery

Full Image BackupsInstallation and setup includes:• Installation of Acronis True Image software on

each PC• License registration• Configure and run initial full image backup on

each PC • Setup scheduled differential backups to occur at

intervals to be determined

Ongoing support includes:• 1 year telephone and remote access for image

backup troubleshooting• On-site support @ $120/hr

Online Cloud Backups combined with Local Image Backups provide your best

defense against catastrophic data loss and prolonged

recovery time in the event of disaster!

Page 14: Backup and Disaster Recovery

A disaster recovery backup plan from SOHO Systems includes both a cloud based backup

solution for daily/continuous data file backup and a local full image backup.

This approach provides an easy method of recovering lost, damaged or accidental deletion of

your data as well as a rapid and up to date restoration of your computer system in the event of

catastrophic loss

Don’t be this guy!

Protecting your data; Local and remote backups of your computer data Copy of files; docs, spreadsheets, financials, pics, music, etc

Local backups on usb removable storage, network attached storage, server shares, CD/DVD, tape

Manual copy of files to near storage (drag and drop) Use of specialized backup apps

Windows built in backup apps XP “NTBackup” (typically not included with XP Home version) Vista, 7, 8 “Backup and Restore”

Mac built in backup apps Time Machine (OS X 10.5 or greater)

3rd party apps Many included with backup storage devices Freeware Low cost backup apps (~$50)

Acronis True Image Norton Ghost NovaBackup Chronosync (Mac)

Cloud storage Free with Google apps, MS Skydrive, iCloud…

May require manually uploading files for backup and sharing Limited space allocated, more available for a fee

Other free cloud storage options Mozy, SugarSync, Dropbox, SOHO Remote… Automatic scheduled backups/syncs, continuous syncs Limited free space

Fee based cloud storage Carbonite, Mozy, SugarSync, Dropbox, SOHO Remote… Pay per GB/month, typically around $0.50/GB Different licensing models

Per PC per GB Multiple PC’s share allocated space Some charge an additional device lic fee ~ $5.00/month

Multiple revisions Secure transmissions and storage

HIPAA, SOX, MA CMR 17 compliance

Planning for the inevitable: catastrophic loss or damage Hard drive crash Data corruption due to malware, power surge hardware failure, etc. Two tiered approach to computer backups

Implement both local and remote (cloud) backups Backup key data daily or continuously to cloud drive

Documents folder Financial data files Outlook data files

Backup weekly or monthly to local storage utilizing system image backup Backs up entire computer

Full backup Incremental backups Differential backups

Fast system recovery after repair/replace of damaged components (bare metal restore)

Rotate external hard drives (backup device) to keep a copy offsite.a. Some imaging software can even restore to dissimilar hardware
