Aerovent’s BI and BIA Centrifugal Fans feature effi-ciently designed backward inclined wheels for industri-al air moving applications. Designed for clean air appli-cations, the BI and BIA fans offer energy savings andoperate at lower noise levels than other industrial fantypes.

One of the most common uses for a BI fan is on theclean air side of a dust collector. An industrial fan isessential in a dust collector system. It induces the flowto move the contaminants through the system. A dustcollector system can be designed with the fanupstream, clean air side, or downstream, dirty air side.For a particular application, each will have its advan-tages and disadvantages. If the system has the faninstalled on the clean air side of the dust collector,where little or no dust is present, a more efficient fancan be selected. If the system has the fan installed onthe dirty air side of the dust collector, a material han-dling fan must be selected.

The BI fan can be installed on the clean air side ofa dust collector system. This installation design willminimize blade erosion and reduce energy costs com-pared to installing a material handling fan on the dirtyair side. A material handling fan emphasizes rugged-ness and durability in its design, not efficiency, forheavy material loading. Due to continuous dust flowthrough the fan, the fan blades will eventually erode,requiring wheel replacement. A BI fan, however,emphasizes efficiency in its design, thus providingenergy savings. By installing a BI fan on the clean airside of the dust collector, where little or no dust is pre-sent, blade erosion is also minimized, reducing mainte-nance costs. Note that although the BIA fan is moreefficient, it should never be used in dust collecting sys-tems.

Wheel Design

BI WheelBI wheels are furnished with flatheavy-gauge steel blades weld-ed to front and back plates,providing a rugged, efficientfan for many industrial airmoving applications.

Aluminum and stainlesssteel construction are availablefor both fan housing andwheel. Aluminum construction islimited to a maximum temperatureof 275°F.

Wheel sizes 12" through 63" are equipped with mal-leable iron split-taper bushings. All larger diameterwheels are furnished with straight bore hubs.

Safety EquipmentOSHA TYPE BELT GUARD —Complete coverage of beltsand sheaves to provide maxi-mum protection for person-nel. Includes a tachometeropening for checking the fanspeed. On Arrangement 9 fansbelt and shaft guards are bolt-ed to the fan base for easyremoval.

SHAFT & BEARING GUARD — Solid sheet metalenclosure designed to cover the shaft and bearings.Grease lines are accessible for lubrication purposes.

INLET GUARD — A spiral wiretype safety guard is offered as anaccessory for attachment to thefan inlet when no duct connec-tion is used.

Vibration IsolatorsRubber-in-shear or spring type vibration isolators areavailable for all sizes and arrangements.

Flanged Inletand OutletFor bolted duct connec-tions, flanges can be pro-vided on both the inlet andthe outlet. Flanges are pre-drilled. Companion flangesare also available.

Shaft SealFour types of friction shaftseals are available:

1. Elastomeric Rotary Seal —Rides against a heavyTeflon wear plate. Spareseal provided as standard.This seal is suitable foroperation to 300°F.

2. Ceramic Felt — Elementsare encased between housing drive side and metalretaining plate. Ceramic felt inserts may be easilysplit for field installation and maintenance. The sealis best suited for 301°F to 600°F operation. Theseseals minimize leakage around the shaft opening butare not gas-tight.

3. Lubricated Seals — For longer seal life. Suitable to300°F.

4. Stuffing Boxes — Three rows of permanently lubri-cated packing material encased between housingdrive side and machined metal packing gland. Theshaft seal provides the best seal against gas leakage,but is not totally gas-tight. Suitable for operation to500°F.

Cleanout DoorsCleanout doors are available in two types:

1. Quick opening, latch type and neoprene foam gas-keted.

2. Bolted type, gasketed.

Doors are located at approximately 3 o’clock or 9o’clock positions on housing scroll opposite fan dis-charge. If specific location is required, provide detailedinformation.

Performance Correction For Temperature & Altitude

When a fan operates at standard conditions, it is han-dling air at 70°F as measured at sea level. If the perfor-mance of the fan is based on standard conditions, thefan can be selected directly from the performance tablesin this catalog.

When a fan operates at temperatures other than 70°F,a temperature correction factor is utilized to convert theoperating conditions to standard conditions. This con-version must be done before the fan can be selectedfrom the performance tables in this catalog. After the fanis selected at standard conditions, the temperature cor-rection factor is utilized again to convert the standardbrake horsepower to the operating brake horsepower.This is shown in the example below.

The temperature correction factors are found in Table1.

Example: The contractor specifies a 20" centrifugalfan with a BI wheel, in Arrangement 1, to provide 6,660CFM at 31⁄2" SP, at 600°F (0.0375 lbs./cu. ft. density) atsea level.

For 600°F, Table 1 shows a temperature correctionfactor of 2.00. Using the temperature correction factor,the static pressure at standard conditions is determinedas follows:

Turn to page 14 for the 20" BI fan performance table.Using 6,660 CFM at 7" SP at standard conditions, find theRPM and brake horsepower to be 2404 RPM and 10.93BHP. Note: 10.93 BHP is the brake horsepower requiredat standard conditions and is also referred to as the “coldbrake horsepower” or “starting brake horsepower.”

The actual brake horsepower at the operating con-dition of 600°F and sea level is determined by the fol-lowing equation:

Therefore, the 20" BI fan providing 6,660 CFM at 31⁄2" SP,at 600°F will run at 2404 RPM and will require 5.47 BHPat operating conditions and 10.93 BHP at starting.

When operating at temperatures other than 70°F, themaximum speed of the fan class is affected. To deter-mine the maximum speed at the operating temperaturea “maximum safe speed factor” is applied to the maxi-mum speed of the class.

Table 2 shows the maximum safe speeds for BIwheels at 70°F and Table 3 shows the maximum safespeed factors for elevated temperatures. For this exam-ple, assuming steel construction, the maximum safespeed factor is 0.92.

a. The maximum Class I RPM is 1941 RPM. In thisexample the operating RPM, 2404 RPM, is greaterthan 1941 RPM. A Class I fan cannot be utilized.

b. The maximum Class II RPM is 2523 RPM. Applyingthe “maximum safe speed factor:”

2523 RPM x 0.92 = 2321 RPMFor this example, the operating RPM, 2404 RPM, isgreater than 2321 RPM. Therefore, a Class II fan can-not be utilized.

c. The maximum Class III RPM is 3202 RPM. Applyingthe “maximum safe speed factor:”

3202 RPM x 0.92 = 2946 RPM

Since 2946 RPM is greater than the operating speedof 2404 RPM, a Class III, 20" BI fan can be utilized.

When a fan operates at 70°F but at an altitude otherthan sea level, an “Altitude Correction Factor” is utilizedto convert these conditions to standard conditions. Theconversion must be done before the fan can be select-ed from the performance tables in this catalog. After thefan is selected at standard conditions, the altitude cor-rection factor is utilized to convert the standard brakehorsepower to the operating brake horsepower. Thismethod for correcting altitude is the same as for tem-perature except the altitude correction factors are foundin Table 4.

When a fan operates at temperatures other than 70°Fand altitudes other than sea level, the correction factorsfor both temperature and altitude must be applied. Thisconversion must be done before the fan can be select-ed from the performance tables in this catalog. After thefan is selected at standard conditions, the temperatureand altitude correction factor is utilized to convert thestandard brake horsepower to the operating brakehorsepower.

The “Temperature And Altitude Correction Factor” iscalculated as follows:

For example, if the operating conditions are 450°Fand 3000 feet above sea level, the correction factor isdetermined as follows:

a. From Table 1, the temperature correction factor for450°F is 1.72.

b. From Table 4, the altitude correction factor for 3000feet above sea level is 1.12.

c. Therefore, 1.72 x 1.12 = 1.93

For 450°F and 3000 feet above sea level, theTemperature & Altitude Correction Factor is 1.93.

ModificationsHeat FansAll BI fans (sizes 12" to 79") and BIA fans (sizes 25" to79") can be used for operation at elevated temperaturesprovided certain modifications are made.

The effect of various temperatures on material strengthmust also be considered.

Maximum temperatures for each arrangement and fanmodifications to meet these temperatures are given inTable 7. Safe speed limits at various temperatures foreach fan size are listed in Table 2 and Table 3 on page 6.

Corrosion ResistanceCorrosion problems result when the air contains one ormore chemicals which are corrosive in nature. Theextent of the corrosion problem, however, varies withthe specific properties of the chemical involved, theconcentration, moisture content, and temperature ofthe mixture. Protective coatings and special construc-tion are available to combat corrosion problems.

Spark-Resistant ConstructionDescribed below are three classifications as defined byAMCA Standards for spark resistant construction.

Type Construction Details

“A” All parts of the fan in contact with the air orgas being handled shall be made of nonfer-rous material. Steps must also be taken toensure that the wheel, bearings, and shaftare adequately attached and/or restrained toprevent a lateral or axial shift in these com-ponents.

“B” The fan shall have a nonferrous wheel andnonferrous ring about the opening throughwhich the shaft passes. Ferrous hubs, shafts,and hardware are allowed provided con-struction is such that a shift of wheel or shaftwill not permit two ferrous parts of the fanto rub or strike. Steps must also be taken toensure that the wheel, bearings, and shaftare adequately attached and/or restrained toprevent a lateral or axial shift in these com-ponents.

“C” The fan shall be so constructed that a shiftof the wheel or shaft will not permit two fer-rous parts of the fan to rub or strike.

NOTES: 1. No bearings, drive components or electrical devices

shall be placed in the air or a gas stream unless theyare constructed or enclosed in such a manner thatfailure of that component cannot ignite the sur-rounding gas stream.

2. The user shall electrically ground all fan parts.

3. For this standard, nonferrous material shall be anymaterial with less than 5% iron or any other materi-al with demonstrated ability to be spark resistant.

4. The use of aluminum or aluminum alloys in thepresence of steel, that have been allowed to rust,requires special consideration. Research by the U.S.Bureau of Mines and others has shown that alu-minum wheels rubbing on rust steel may cause highintensity sparking.

The use of the above standard in no way implies aguarantee of safety for any level of spark resistance.Spark resistant construction also does not protectagainst ignition of explosive gases caused by cata-strophic failure or from any airstream material that maybe present in a system.

Belt Driven ArrangementsARRANGEMENT 1 has ashaft and bearing assemblydesigned to be driven by aseparately mounted motor.These fans are availablethroughout the range ofsizes. The fan can be modi-fied for operation at elevatedtemperatures to a maximumof 600°F.*

ARRANGEMENT 2 has thewheel overhung with a com-pact bearing and shaft assem-bly for belt driven or directconnection. Available inClass I and Class II construc-tion for sizes 12" through 25".Temperature to 275°F.

ARRANGEMENT 3 — Formaximum structural strength,bearings are mounted oneach side of the wheel.Available in sizes 28" through79". These units are limited tohandling dry uncontaminatedair to 200°F maximum. UseArrangement 2 for fans small-er than size 28".

ARRANGEMENT 9 — V-beltdrive with the motor mount-ed on the bearing base sup-port. A slide rail base underthe motor provides for easyadjustment of the belt ten-sion. It is located on the rightside as standard (whenviewed from the drive end ofthe shaft). The fan can bemodified for operation at ele-vated temperatures to a max-imum of 600°F.

ARRANGEMENT 10 is avail-able in sizes 12" through 39".The motor is mounted direct-ly under the fan shaft on abase so that the belt tensioncan be adjusted by means ofa slide rail base. This fan canbe modified for elevated tem-peratures to a maximum of600°F.*

Direct Drive ArrangementsThe direct drive assemblies described below are avail-able for applications requiring minimum maintenance,where exact design conditions have been established,and where the motor size is within practical limits.

When the desired fan performance is not obtainablewith the standard fan, optional narrow width construc-tion is available to meet the specific requirements.

ARRANGEMENT 4 — Directdrive assembly with thewheel mounted directly tothe motor shaft. Compact andeasy to maintain design forapplications where exactconditions are established.Available as standard in sizes12" through 32". For sizeslarger than 32" please consultthe factory. Maximum tem-perature is 180°F.

ARRANGEMENT 7 — This isan Arrangement 3 fan with apedestal added to accommo-date a motor and flexiblecoupling. Available in sizes28" through 79". These unitsare limited to handling dryuncontaminated air to 200°Fmaximum.

ARRANGEMENT 8 — Sameas Arrangement 1 fan butwith an extended pedestal toaccommodate a motor andflexible coupling. These fansare available throughout therange of sizes. The fan can bemodified for operation at ele-vated temperatures to a max-imum of 600°F.*

Typical SpecificationsFans shall be Model BI or BIA SWSI Backward Inclined/Backward Inclined Airfoil Industrial Centrifugal, as manu-factured by Aerovent, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and shall be of the size, class, capacity, and arrangement as indicat-ed in the fan schedule. Centrifugal fans shall be tested and certified in accordance with ANSI/AMCA 210-85 andANSI/ASHRAE 51-1985 test codes and guaranteed by the manufacturer to deliver at the rated published performancelevels. In addition, each unit shall be factory run tested prior to shipment.

CONSTRUCTION — The BI/BIA housing shall be designed to meet Class I/Class II/Class III/Class IV construction.The housing shall be constructed of heavy gauge materials with continuous seam type welding and side angle rein-forcement. The housing shall be field rotatable for sizes 12 through 28. Lifting eyes shall be supplied on all sizes.Housing material shall be constructed of the following optional metal:

� Steel � Aluminum � 304 Stainless Steel � 316 Stainless Steel

WHEEL — The wheel shall be statically and dynamically balanced and shall be attached to the shaft with a split taperlock bushing. Some larger wheels are furnished with straight bore hubs. BI blades shall be flat, single thickness type,constructed from heavy gauge steel and continuously precision welded to a flat wheel cone and back plate. BIAblades shall be backward curved, double thickness airfoil type, welded to a flat wheel cone and back plate. BIAwheel sizes 12 through 25 shall be constructed from heavy gauge extruded aluminum only. BIA wheel sizes 28 andlarger shall be constructed from heavy gauge steel with aluminum as an option.

BEARINGS — Bearings shall be pillow block design, oversized to ensure maximum bearing life and shall have aminimum L-10 life as defined by AFBMA of at least 40,000 hours (200,000 hours average life).

DRIVE — The belts and sheaves furnished by the manufacturer shall be selected to provide a minimum 1.4 servicefactor when measured against motor horsepower.

MOTOR — Fan motors shall be foot mounted NEMA Design B, standard industrial, continuous duty, ball bearingvariable torque type suitable for operation on voltage, phase and hertz, as listed in the fan schedule. Motor bearingsshall have a minimum L-10 life, as defined by AFBMA, of at least 40,000 hours (200,000 hours average life).

BALANCING — The wheel assembly shall be statically and dynamically balanced in accordance with ANSI/AMCA204-96 “Balance Quality and Vibration Levels for Fans” to Fan Application Category BV-3, Balance Quality GradeG6.3. In addition, direct drive fan wheels shall be balanced on the motor shaft after final assembly and belt drivenfan wheels shall be balanced on the fan shaft after final assembly, in the manufacturing facility, to the following peakvelocity values, filter-in, at the fan test speed:

FINISH — The unit, after fabrication, shall be cleaned and chemically pretreated by a phosphatizing process andshall be painted inside and outside with an air dry enamel. The fan shall be coated with the following optional fin-ish:
