Most of you are aware of this week’s fire at the Quarry Street

apartments that left 4 families out of their homes. A St. John

parent has suggested that we conduct a food drive. That sounded

like a great idea. To that end we have a box in the front hall for you

to drop off any donations that you would like to contribute. I

encourage you to give generously. This is a great way to share the

love Jesus. That is what we are all about.

Our second pizza sale of the year is underway right now. If you

would like to participate in order to raise funds for your tuition

account or start saving for your child’s 8th grade class trip, please

request the order forms from the office.

We are also kicking off our annual tree sale and hanging flower

basket sale next week. We will have order forms ready to share

with family, friends, neighbors and coworkers. Trees will be ready

for pick-up on April 29. Flower baskets will be at the school for

pick-up on Mothers’ Day. These are good fundraisers for our PTL

who fund projects and upgrades around the school that are not

covered in the regular budget. Your participation will ensure the

success of these projects.

Basketball and cheerleader photos will be taken Monday. Please

make sure that you have received, filled out, and returned the

order form.

Literacy

On Tuesday we celebrated

4K’s 100th day of school.

We made headbands with

100 fingerprints on them.

We made trail mix counting

out 100 pieces of snack. We

sent home another book

from the literacy grant on

Tuesday. Each child was able

to make a selection from a

variety of books.

Jesus Time

We read the story of Jesus

visiting His friends Mary

and Martha. Mary and

Martha welcomed Jesus into

their home. Mary sat at

Jesus’ feet as He told of

God’s love. Martha continued

with cleaning and meal

preparat ions . Martha

complained to Jesus that

Mary was not helping her.

Jesus explained that Mary

chose what was important.

This week in 3K we began talking

about and identifying the first

letter of our name and things in

the classroom that start with

the same letter. We also

started learning about Dr Seuss,

because his birthday is

Thursday, March 2nd. Thursday

is National Read Across America

Day in honor of Dr. Seuss. Also,

next week is the start of a new

month so we will be learning a

new snack prayer to the tune of

the “Hokey Pokey”. The words

are "You send the blessings

down. We lift the praises up.

You send the blessings down, and

you spread ‘em all around. We

thank you, Lord, together ‘cuz

you’ve given us so much, and

that’s what it’s all about. Amen."

Next week is also the end of the

s e c o n d t r i m e s t e r . I n

Kindergarten, we are finishing

the letter Uu in our Superkids

and then we will be taking a

progress test before we begin

the next unit. Also, next week

we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’

birthday on Thursday with some

fun Dr. Seuss themed activities.

We will also be using the new

snack/lunch prayer from above.

Friday in the end of the second

trimester and report cards will

be issued March 8th.

We began our Unit 6 in Religion

this week. Jesus healed the

paralyzed man and the ten

lepers. We created a fantastic

FAITH sign! Our faith in Jesus

is what saves us. Our Bible

verse this week is: Now faith is

the assurance of things hoped

for, the conviction of things not

seen. Hebrews 11:1. Second

grade is learning to add money

to the hundreds place, tell time

to five minutes, measure to the

half inch, and compare numbers

using >, <, and =. First grade is

adding money to the tens place,

telling time to the half hour,

making straight line segments,

learning how to make tally

marks, and identify half and one

fourth. First grade is also

learning long vowel sounds and

how to mark their sounds in

Superkids, adding ed and ing

endings to root words. Second

grade is learning words with

prefixes un and re. We are

finishing the first Readers in

both grades and taking

assessment tests this week and

next week. New spelling words

are in the folders, as well as a

new Memory Schedule. Have a

relaxing weekend!

TAX DEDUCTION FOR PRIVATE SCHOOL TUITION

Tax Day is coming up on April 18, 2017. Don't forget to claim your private school

tuition tax deduction!

There is a silver lining to this dreaded deadline for private school parents.

Thanks to advocacy by WCRIS, state law allows Wisconsin parents to deduct

private school tuition on their taxes.

This is the third year the private school tuition tax deduction has been available,

so don't forget to remind parents and tax professionals of this enormous

opportunity. Please help spread the word to your families so that they can take

advantage of this financial benefit.

In total, the deduction has the potential to provide up to $30 million in tax relief

for taxpayers with children in private schools. In 2014 alone, the first year of

the deduction, parents saved $11.2 million, according to DOR reports analyzed by

the Wisconsin Tax Payers Alliance (WisTax).

Regardless of income, parents and legal guardians are eligible for a maximum

deduction of $4,000 per child in grades K-8 and $10,000 per child in grades 9-12.

Students transitioning from eighth to ninth grade are eligible for both

deductions.

You can pick up your 2016 Tuition Statement in the office—or call Mrs. Reeves to

have it sent home with your child, or emailed.

How does someone qualify for the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program (WPCP)? A student

qualifies for the WPCP on the basis of their residency and their family income, if applicable.

Students must reside in a Wisconsin school district, other than in the city of Milwaukee and Racine

Unified School District. Additionally, students in the WPCP must meet at least one of the prior

year school attendance requirements: (1) been enrolled in a public school in Wisconsin in the 2016-

17 school year, (2) have not been enrolled in school in the 2016-17 school year, (3) be applying for

kindergarten, first or ninth grade at the private school in the 2017-18 school year or (4)

participated in the WPCP in the 2016-17 school year. For the 2017-18 school year, a new student

must have a family income at or below the amount listed in Table 3. Students who participated in

the WPCP in 2016-17 or were on the DPI’s waiting list in 2016-17 are not required to prove that

they are income eligible. Family income includes the income of the student’s parent(s) or legal

guardian(s) that reside in the same household as the student applicant. If the student’s

parents/legal guardians are married their income is reduced by $7,000 when determining income

eligibility for the program. Family size includes parents/guardians and their children by birth,

marriage or adoption that reside in the same household as the student applicant.

WPCP 185% of the Federal Poverty Level for 2017-18 Family Size Maximum Yearly Income 1

$21,978 2 $29,637 3 $37,296 4 $44,955 5 $52,614 6 $60,273 7 $67,951 8 $75,647 For each

additional member add $7,696

How does a student apply for the WPCP? The application period for the 2017-18 school year is

from February 1 – April 20. Parents must complete the online student application available through

the following webpage: http://dpi.wi.gov/sms/choiceprograms/student-applications. Parents must

provide residency documentation and income documentation, if applicable to the school(s) they

apply to during the application period or the application is ineligible. Additionally, applicants for the

WPCP will have to indicate which of the prior year school attendance requirements they meet.

Parents/guardians may either: (a) provide their social security numbers or taxpayer identification

number to the school and have the Department of Revenue determine whether the student is

income eligible for the program; or (b) use the Department of Public Instruction’s income

determination method by answering a series of income questions in the on-line application and

providing paper income documentation to the school(s) as directed in the application during the

open application period. The school will verify that the student meets the income Page 5 of 8

requirements. Applicants must also provide proof of residency directly to the schools during the

open application period. A student can apply to the Choice program at one or more schools during

the open application period.
