Baduk Terminology v0.15
This is a work in progress, compiled frommany online and offline sources by MarcelGrunauer, with help from Kim Byung-moon(@Ñ8). There are still many things thatcan’t be right. For example, some termshave multiple, partially conflicting, meanings,and there are several terms for the samething. Please send additions, correctionsand comments to [email protected]. Checkhttp://gote.at/go/baduk terminology.pdf regu-larly for updates.
There are four sections: The first section,“Baduk Terms”, provides english translationsfor words and phrases often found in Koreanbaduk books. The second section, “Baduk BookGuide”, provides translations for titles of Ko-rean baduk books. The third section, “PlayerNames”, lists the names of korean (as well asother) players along with their romanizations.The fourth section, “Example Phrases” providesuseful phrases to use on baduk servers or whenspeaking with your Korean baduk friends.
Entries are sorted according to hangeul al-phabetical order. Pronunciation for the hangeulterms is given according to the Revised Roman-ization, which was officially introduced by SouthKorean authorities in 2000.
Note that S[eo] is pronounced like the aw inthaw ; P [ae] like the a in bat ; H [j ] like thedg in edge; J [ch] like the aspirated ch in chop;a [eu] like the u in pull, but without the liprounding. Before c [i ], E [s] (but not F [ss])is pronouned sh. Double consonants are voice-less, not aspirated and more explosive than theirsingle counterparts.
Language Notes
Making nouns from verbs For many koreanverbs you can take the dictionary form (theone ending in -ä [da]) and replace the -ä with -0 [gi ], thereby using the verb as anoun. For example,ÔXä [baggwochida]to trade (verb); ÔX0 [baggwochigi ] thetrading (noun).
Plural marker -ä [deul ] is the particle forforming a plural. Only necessary if youexplicitly don’t mean the singular; nor-mally, a noun can be singular and plu-ral, depending on the context. Examples:Ì [dol ] stone(s), Ìä [doldeul ] stones; E[chaek ] book(s), Eä [chaekdeul ] books;
 [jeongseok ] standard sequence(s),ä[jeongseokdeul ] standard sequences.
Stone Ì [dol ] is an originally korean word forstone. [seok ] also means stone, but isof chinese origin. Hence [jeongseok ]correct stone(s). Also QÌ [badukdol ] gostone (jap. ishi).

Player Names
Often, the prevalent romanization is not in theRevised Romanization; therefore, the most com-mon romanization is still used, but the RevisedRomanization is given as well to make pronoun-ciation more consistent throughout this guide.For example, p is most often romanized asCho Hun-hyeon, so that is what I have used here.However, the Revised Romanization is [Jo Hun-hyeon], so I have added that as well to enable thereader to pronounce the name correctly withinthe pronounciation guidelines given at the be-ginning. I have not, however, gone as far as toinclude all sorts of weird romanizations such asCho Hun-hyun and the like.
