Talk about it (before the film)
What do you know about Iran? Where in the world is it? What do you
think life is like there for children?
Talk about it (after the film)
What words would you use to describe Jairan and Masume? Do
you think they make a good team? Should Jairans mum let themgo out shopping again?
What problems do Jairan and Masume encounter trying to buy
the rice and bring it home? How do they overcome them? Think
of specific examples such as when Masume loses her glasses
(00:32:45). How do these moments relate to the moral of the
story?
What did you think of the city that Jairan lives in? In what way is it
similar or different to where you live? How does the director use
the camera and story to show us the city through Jairans eyes?
Does it remind you of any other films - the story, setting,
characters, the way it is filmed or edited, the music or sound? What
are the similarities?
Write about it
Bring your ideas together in a review and share it on our film clubs
website. You could include a summary of the story, mention other
films its like, describe what you particularly liked or disliked and give it
your star rating.
Extension activities:
Jairan and the boy she meets try give each other directions to their
houses. Try to describe to a friend how you would get from your local
shops to your home, think about directions and landmarks that wouldhelp them find their way. You could illustrate your route with a map or
plot it on a storyboard.

Bag of Rice
Iran | 1998 | Cert. U | 80 mins
Director: Mohammad Ali Talebi
Jairan comes from a big, busy family where
she often feels left out or overlooked.
Bored of sitting at home whilst her sisters
go to school, she persuades a neighbour
to take her across the city to buy rice and
soon finds herself on an exciting adventure.
This simple story is never boring with
natural, funny performances and a lovely
message about community.
