TYPES OF BAGGAGE

Checked baggage

Checked baggage refers to items of luggage delivered to an

airline in the hold of an aircraft, which means it is inaccessible to

the passenger during the flight. This baggage is limited by airlines

with regard to size, weight, and number, usually dependent upon

the fare paid, or class of ticket.

Cabin baggage

Carry-on baggage must be stowed in the aircraft cabin which

limits baggage to a size, weight and shape to fit in a storage

compartment.

EXCESS BAGGAGE

Excess baggage is the amount of baggage that is in excess of the

free allowance in size, number, or weight permitted for the air

journey. This may be carried at an extra charge.

Airlines may charge on per KG basis.

IDENTIFICATION OF

BAGS

• The term license plate is the official term used by the IATA, the

airlines, and the airports for the 10-digit numeric code on a bag

tag issued by a carrier or handling agent at check-in.

• Each digit in a license plate has a specific meaning.

• The license plate is an index number linking a bag to a

Baggage Source Message (BSM) sent by a carrier's departure

control system to an airport's baggage handling system. It is

the message that contains the flight details and passenger

information, thus enabling an automated baggage handling

system to sort a bag automatically once it has scanned the bar

code on the carrier tag.

SITA BAGGAGE MANAGEMENT

• SITA provides a baggage management system delivering

passengers' bags to their destination on-time enhances

customer satisfaction. Keeping departures on-time and

minimizing aircraft turnaround lower your operational costs.

• SITA's Baggage Management helps you achieve all these by

tracking and managing bags from check-in to final destination.

• SITA Baggage Management uses barcoding and RFID

tagging to manage the flow of baggage from airline to airline

and airport to airport.

BAGGAGE MISHANDLING

• SITA’s WorldTracer, developed in cooperation with IATA, is a

global service that matches found bags with lost bag reports. It

provides a faster and more cost-effective way of reuniting

passengers with their bags.
