Another major BCYC-hosted event was the SCYA Women’s Sailing Convention. More than 200 women from throughout Southern California and other states participated in a full day of classes covering all aspects of sailing, meeting new friends and enjoying a great dinner with a superb guest speaker. Many BCYC members helped as organizers, instructors and, very importantly, as BCYC concierges.

Our calendar also had a very important Safety at Sea Seminar presented by US Sailing, a learning opportunity that is truly valuable to anyone who goes out on boats — sail or power. We must thank Sail Fleet Captain Paul DeCapua for this event.

Of course, one of the major events on the BCYC calendar is the Commodore’s Ball. I can’t begin to thank all the wonderful, generous, talented and caring people who organized the ball, and the pre-ball cocktail parties, to make this evening so very special for me. Being A BCYC Ambassador – An Honor

As a BCYC member, you know that you are part of a great club. Our facilities are without equal in Newport Beach and our history is filled with astute leadership and great traditions. If you actively participate in club events, you already know about the wonderful camaraderie and fun-filled times that draw you back to the club time and again. To those who have just joined the club, your active participation will be a rewarding experience, as you become part of a great family.

You don’t need a boat to join the club, only an appreciation of things maritime and the desire to participate in some of the many things that BCYC has to offer. It is amazing that January and February are already gone. Super Bowl Sunday was a huge success, as was the very romantic Valentine’s Day dinner. The Doug Mills Series racing continues in March. Prime Rib Night is always fantastic as Chef Georges Rapicault creates a sumptuous feast for all to enjoy. In March, the 2016 cruise season begins with the land cruise to Palm Desert, and Showboat will once again rock BCYC, a must-see event.

As ambassadors of BCYC, your active participation enriches the club, and the way you represent our club is really important, encouraging new members to engage and participate in club activities, enhancing their experience here. If you see a new member, we encourage you to help them get involved and make new friends. If you are a member who has not been there for a while, come back and enjoy everything BCYC has to offer.

Our new membership drive is off to a strong start this year and we are actively working to attract members who will bring new ideas and energy to keep us the friendliest yacht club in Newport Beach.

NEW BCYC COMMITTEEBCYC has a new committee for 2016, the Traditions Committee. Its purpose is to revive and perpetuate the long historical traditions associated with yacht clubs. As members, we are part of the worldwide yachting community, complete with reciprocity and an inheritance of yachting’s history, traditions, customs and courtesies. As an active member of that fraternity, we ought to practice those customs and courtesies in how we behave, dress, conduct our ceremonies and fly our flags to honor that tradition. Doing things well in a consistent and proper fashion is a way of showing pride in our club, and provides a bond back to our founders and a connection forward to the next generation. Please feel free to join us for our monthly meetings, listed in the BCYC Weekly Updates.

Springtime Cruising

CruisingLauri and Secy Steve [email protected]

Our first 2016 cruise, March 4-6, is a desert land cruise to the Indian Wells-Palm Desert area. Currently we have a wait list and cancelations are a possibility. An 18-hole putting game, starting at 3 p.m., has been added to the Friday schedule, preceding the cocktail party. Please contact Tony Knox, [email protected], if you would like to play. There is no additional cost for this activity, but we do need your name on the entry gate list. A full itinerary has been sent to everyone who signed up for the cruise.

We would love to have you join us on the Avalon Cruise, scheduled for the weekend of April 8-10. This is also the same weekend as the Catalina Island Conservancy Ball at the Avalon Casino ballroom. If you are interested in attending this black-tie event, purchase your tickets through the Conservancy, as this will not be part of our cruise agenda.

News flash – we will have angling challenges during this cruise! Please read the Angling Committee article in this Masthead for more information. Other planned events include a photo scavenger hunt, lunch at the Inn at Mt. Ada, and a group dinner in town. Nothing is set in stone – we welcome ideas. In the event that weather does not cooperate, we will change this cruise to a “Staycation” at the club.

Our monthly meetings, to plan for upcoming cruises, are held on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. Please join our fun group – we look forward to seeing you all there!

Going “thru the chairs” so aptly describes the duties and responsibilities of the flag officers, and you find out so much about the inner workings of our club. This year, as vice commodore, I have the privilege of being involved in the on-the-water activities at BCYC. While there are many groups that fall under this category, such as cruise, angling and junior sailing, there is one group I would like to highlight and that is our Race Committee, headed by Sail Fleet Captain, Paul DeCapua. This group spends more hours on the water than probably any of us and their sole purpose is to run all of the races that are on the very crowded BCYC race calendar, ensuring we all have a safe and fun time on the water. Very few sailboat racers recognize the time and effort that takes place both before and during, as well as after, each race or series of races.

Paul is assisted by many of our members, including Jerry Moulton, Bill McNamara and Scott Truesdell to name a few, and he has been able to amass enough volunteers to make BCYC a highly respected club, which runs some of the best races on the bay or local ocean waters. We can all be especially proud of all their accomplishments and dedication. Recently, I learned that Paul will be retiring from his position after 11 years on the water, eight as sail fleet captain. While I know we need to accept change and adjust, his dedication and commitment to our race programs is greatly appreciated and I will sorely miss seeing him aboard Emmi, our premier committee boat.

When you see Paul at the club, or on the water as you pass the race committee boat, thank him for his many accomplishments. I know he will insure a smooth transition.

Thank you, Paul, for all you have done for BCYC. You can race with me anytime – you are truly our unsung hero.

Exciting, Super, Elegant

ActivitiesKristy Parr/Kari [email protected] [email protected]

2016 is off to a great start with several exciting activities! BCYC members “swung into the new year” in January by dancing the night away to the swinging tunes from the Boogie Woogie 40s, Rockabilly 50s and Motown 60s performed by The Blue Delilahs. The band kept the dance floor hopping all night during this Lounge Night, and the small plate selections by Chef Georges Rapicault were delicious. The comments you all provided were so favorable that you WILL be seeing this band back at the club in the future.

We had a SUPER time at the Super Bowl spectacular. The crowd was able to enjoy watching an exciting game and hilarious commercials, thanks to our upgraded televisions and sound systems throughout the club. The juniors had their own party on the lower level, complete with a bounce house and their own viewing venue. Our fantastic culinary crew provided a Backfield Buffet that catered to every taste. Congratulations to all the winners on the day! A huge shout out to Membership Co-Chair Teri Leigh for organizing the set-up crew, and to Cary and Director Silvia Breeden for once again providing team colors to the club.

Love was in the air for our Valentine’s dinner. The club looked beautiful and the food was delicious. Thanks to the decorating team of Julie Bitetto, Lori Curtin, Teri Leigh, Jane Stratton and Rhonda Tolar, and to the fabulous Bob Kafka, on the piano, for entertaining us throughout the evening

We finished out the month with our most elegant event of the year – BCYC’s annual Commodore’s Ball, Feb. 20., honoring Commodore Sandy Mills. Thank you to the pre-ball cocktail party hosts for opening their beautiful homes to us: Bob and Staff Commodore Mary Bacon, Don and Leslie Kazarian, Roland and Sally Rapp, and Jaques and Sally Sopkin. We also thank our co-hosts for the evening: Staff Commodore Steve and Diane Askew, Michael and Nancy Bryant, Staff Commodore Don and Judy Cole, Phil and Staff Commodore Ginny Eaton, Director Larry and Pam Fortmuller, Staff Commodore Carolyn Hardy, Director Ginny Lombardi, Jacque Pane, Staff Commodore Kenny and Wendy Rozak, and Staff Commodore Karen Winnett. We so appreciate all of your support. Many thanks to the Commodore’s Ball Committee for their vision and hard work.

Please come join us as we look forward to coordinating the spring activities. We meet the second Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m.

Dear Carol – Digital Dilemmas Defused

Dear Carol:

I joined Facebook to keep in touch with my kids, and now people wanting to be my “friend” approach me all the time. I’m not interested in being friends with these people, but I don’t want to cause any offense. What should I do? Signed, Bothered Bob

Dear Bob:

Don’t worry about it! Your Facebook profile is your space, and you don’t have to invite anyone in if you don’t want to. You are not obliged to accept every (or any) friend request, and there’s no fallout from declining one. Nobody receives an alert if you decline. The worst-case scenario is that they may invite you to become friends again, and you can either ignore the request or decline it with no public announcement.

You might want to tighten your privacy settings to limit who is finding and contacting you. When you’re logged into Facebook, just click on the little padlock symbol in the top, right-hand corner of the window. This will open a “Privacy Checkup” that makes it easy to limit who sees you and contacts you.

Good luck, and if you haven’t already, make sure to “like” Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club on Facebook to keep up with club news and events! Best regards, Carol

NOTE from Editor: This Dear Carol column will be a regular feature in The Masthead. Written by Carol Bloom, digital marketing specialist and active BCYC member, she will be pleased to answer your social media questions. Send email to [email protected] with the subject line: Dear Carol - BCYC.

Commodore’s Ball

After such a spectacular evening, how does one even begin to thank the many wonderful people who gave their creative skills and ideas, time and energy, and even their homes to create such a special night for the commodore? It truly was a very special and memorable evening for me.

I need to thank the Activities Committee, co-chaired by Kristy Parr and Kari Konapelsky – they are one dynamic duo! Kari has been one of the mainstays creating the last several Commodore’s Balls. This year, she again was a driving force working with Kristy and many others on the committee, truly an amazing group of people. Also, I need to give a very special thank you to Mary Bacon, a great friend for many years, who put on such a fun program.

An event like the Commodore’s Ball lets us all see the true spirit of BCYC and explains why we love the club and its members so very much.

“If there weren’t luck involved, I would win every time.”

~ Phil Hellmuth, 14 Time World Series of Poker Champion -

I am very happy to report the first BCYC Junior versus Senior Board Poker Challenge, Jan. 29, was a huge success! There were many laughs heard coming from the Lounge, and the competition was fierce. The best part of the evening was getting to know the seniors – everyone is so friendly. We played multiple hands, trying to decide who would represent each board in the Championship Round. Danielle Ahir, Dillon Graveline and Zoey Johansson played very strong as junior board champions. Bob Bacon, Director Ginny Lombardi and Rear Commodore Jerry Shandera were our great senior board champions. Many thanks to Derek Johansson for dealing and coordinating the final round.

Ultimately, the final hands were dealt. It was a very tense 30 minutes of play, with big bluffs and big winnings. Sadly, for the juniors, the seniors pulled off a huge win as Jerry crushed the last hand. The final chip count was juniors, 262, seniors, 443. They get their bragging rights with a soon-to-be added perpetual trophy in the BCYC trophy case. The junior board will train hard for a rematch – we would like to host another challenge in October. Well played, seniors … the juniors will be back!

Cleat Hitches – Important

Ahoy, I hope you are having a nice winter – it is only 80 degrees as I write this!

Have you checked your boat yet, after January’s storms? As of this writing, there are still vessels in the marina with torn or missing canvas, lost fenders or missing mooring lines.

PLEASE come and check your vessel as YOU are responsible for the condition of your boat.•Areyourbilgepumpsworking, areyourmooringlines

frayed or broken, is your canvas in one piece or several pieces?

•Howmuchdamagehaveyoudonetothedockoryourboat, because your lines have stretched or broken in the storms? This can get expensive when repairing the dock and/ or your boat!

In my last article, you saw pictures of cleats in our marina. The mess on these cleats is an extreme example of unsafe seamanship. This cannot be allowed in any marina.

To take the time and effort to untie or un-knot in a storm, when it is cold, raining, windy and slippery is almost impossible. Cutting the line is sometimes the only option – then you still must find a new line, tie off the boat to a different cleat, cut the unusable line of the cleat and finally re-secure the mooring line correctly.

There is only one correct way to tie a line to a cleat. Please use the pictures here as a guide to the correct “cleat hitch,” approved by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. One picture shows a single figure-8 hitch, the other a double figure-8 hitch. The “Flemish flake” to store the extra line is also a must. This keeps the line neat for quick access and allows it to dry quickly. Do not wrap the line around the cleat.

The main reasons for this type of hitch is that it can always be untied; there is no knot. Secondly, a single tie holds well on all lines except very small or slippery lines, when you just use more figure-8 wraps. Be safe.

GOOD CLEAT BAD CLEAT

I love a rainbow, but don’t like the storminess that precedes this beautiful sight. The January Poker Challenge — Junior Board of Directors versus senior members — was a wonderful evening that featured a rainbow of poker acumen. Getting to the championship round was great fun, with laughs and good-natured trash talking. The real winner was the Junior Program, recipient of the proceeds from the evening. All participants are eager to participate in PC II later this year.

Showboat, our annual dinner theater, will celebrate 44 years of contributing memories for cast and audience alike. The show, March 16-19, features amazing performances by your fellow members, as well as a wonderful dinner presented by Chef Georges Rapicault. The BCYC service team, under the guidance of Food and Beverage Manager Karrie Linhof, will provide prompt attention to your dining and hydration requirements during this four-night run. Make reservations – be prepared to laugh, reminisce and enjoy live theater!

Easter Brunch, with that delightful rabbit (aka JL), is a must-be-part-of feast March 27. On the morning of April 16, the Las Commodoras-sponsored Dog Show begins the day. That evening, Aged to Perfection will be the featured Lounge Night performers – with small plates prepared by the BCYC culinary team and great music. Come for a lively evening at the club. The April 21 Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race barbecue provides you the opportunity to meet some of the N2E race participants while enjoying a terrific barbecue. Just to make sure you don’t go hungry, come to BCYC weekly for Saturday breakfast in the Columbia Room and the Sunday Omelet Express (10 a.m.-1p.m.) and Supper Buffet (5-8 p.m.).

Although the weather this winter was a bit more variable than last year, spring is just around the corner. The change in seasons tends to bring more breeze, even more sun, and of course the BCYC Spring Sailing program for junior sailors. If you haven’t signed up yet, we are accepting registrants up until the start of the program. Classes are on Fridays, 3:30-6:30 p.m., beginning March 18. Please visit the Juniors page at bcyc.org for more details.

We will offer four classes this spring: Junior Mariners, CFJ/420, Sabot Racing and Sabot Beginners. Whether your sailor is new to the sport, a seasoned competitor or looking to enjoy the non-racing pleasures of sailing, we have a class for them. The all-star coaching lineup features Head Coach Matt Peter, Sabot guru Mark Gaudio, expert mariner Berkeley Green and Camp Corinthian first-stringers Robert Bents, Ashton Brown and Lea Iodice. Throughout the Spring Program, we will have quest appearances by prospective summer instructors, so sailors can expect some new faces peppered in for an even more dynamic learning experience. We look forward to seeing you on the water in just a few short weeks!

Thank You Donors

On behalf of the BCYC Junior Sailing Program, I would like to share our gratitude for your generous contributions toward the purchase of new CFJ race sails. Without donations such as yours we would not be able to replace these sails as often, so the juniors are very excited about putting them to use in upcoming regattas. Thank you very much for helping outfit our sailors with top-of-the-line equipment which sets them up for success in the future.

Angling and Winning

Exciting news: there will be two new angler cruise challenges this year — trolling to the cruise destination and a 24-hour challenge. Created together with Cruise Committee chairs, Secretary Steve and Lauri Moffett, these challenges will be be featured during three of our 2016 BCYC cruises (name, name, name) and promise to be fun, easy, open to all ages and optional.

First up, trolling your way to Catalina Island for the April Avalon cruise, where challenge one will allow you to use fishing rods or poles, and your choice of bait. Challenge two, the “BCYC 24-hour Angler Challenge,” will start Friday at 4 p.m. and end Saturday at 4 p.m. You can fish from your boat, dock, the beach or dinghy. You can use any type of bait, and the fishing method is up to you. All catches will be entered in the challenge (small/large). There will be a variety of categories for the types of catches. Judges will announce winners at the Saturday night dinner. Prior to the Avalon cruise, a meeting in March will be held for all cruisers, with guest speakers providing tips on how to troll and additional information you will need to enter the challenge. Important – each person must have a 2016 fishing license, available at wildlife.ca.gov.

Congratulations to Caden Wheeler, the first BCYC angler to catch a marlin in 2016. Caden and his dad, Jon, were on a father-son fishing trip off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, when he caught this 140-pound fish. What a great accomplishment!

If you dare to kiss your catch, send in your photo to me at [email protected]. There will be an angler “Best Kiss” photo proudly displayed at the end of the year.

Currently, we have three boats signed up to represent BCYC in this year’s Inter Yacht Club Fishing Tournament in August. We are looking for anglers who would like to participate. If you would like to crew on a boat, or want to enter your own boat, send me an email.

Watch for more information on 2016 angler challenges in upcoming editions of The Masthead.

Just as in 2015, three famous characters have starring roles in our races in March.

The Doug Mills Series (in honor of Staff Commodore Doug Mills) is underway. Competitors race around oil islands and inflatable marks for three days of really nice “winter” racing.

The Lorin Weiss Series (in honor of Staff Commodore Lorin Weiss) begins this month. Competitors from the Harbor 20 fleet race around buoys set up in a windward-leeward arrangement.

The final character is not a BCYC Staff Commodore, but his photo is on display in the trophy cabinets. The Humphrey Bogart race – from Newport to Avalon on Saturday, and then back on Sunday – is set for March 19-20. This is one of those races for everyone. A straight shot between Newport and Avalon…party in Avalon, race back and lots of trophies. Enter now!

Speaking of trophies, did you know the ship’s wheel hanging beyond the Ship’s Store display case is actually from Humphrey Bogart’s 55-foot schooner, Santana? Naturally, it’s awarded to the first place boat overall in the Bogart Race.

Although it’s scheduled for later in the year, I want to let everyone know about the new Fall Finale event. BCYC will be teaming with BYC (Balboa YC) and ALYC (American Legion YC) to put on a day of sailing/racing for everyone.
