A Father’s Day to Remember

ActivitiesMark [email protected] Barden [email protected] Sproule [email protected]

It was a day of happy dads, grandfathers, future fathers, daughters, sons, mothers and friends . Happy was everywhere! The Car Show (boat, motorcycle, truck) greeted all as they entered the club for brunch . Tables were set with centerpieces loaded with tools like the one all dads have at home . The delightful brunch, created by Chef Georges Rapicault and his culinary team “forced” all us to go back for seconds, and thirds! And then there was the Art Show . The dad portraits drawn by their kids were truly works of art . Dad, make sure these are properly framed for your office .

The Fourth of July festivities start with a barbecue on July 4, preceded by the Old Glory boat parade in the harbor (parade begins at 1 p .m .) . July 6, chefs will compete in the world-famous Chili Cook-Off on the mid-patio to vie for the “People Choice” award, the most coveted award in this part of the world! Everyone will finish that evening enjoying the second annual Karaoke Lounge Night, singing and celebrating the July 4th weekend . Remembering last year, we have some real stars at BCYC . During Karaoke Lounge Night, a teaser for the lip sync battle in October will be featured .

July 13 features another world-famous BCYC Lobster Dinner on the pool patio . Sign up NOW, as this Cape Cod-style dinner event in Southern California can’t be missed .

Tuscany on the Terrace, Aug, 24, is yet another world-famous event at BCYC . This event gets better and better each year .

Join us in planning these world-famous and other fun events . The Activities Committee meets the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p .m . I hope to sea ya’ there!

Taco Tuesdays are once again a great success . If you have not attended, be sure and join us soon, as we enjoy many Mexican food favorites prepared by Chef Georges Rapicault and his culinary crew .

During the month of June, we dined across America during Sunday Night Suppers, “traveling” from New Orleans to the great Midwest, the Southwest, ending in San Francisco . In July, SNS will “travel” across the great state of Texas as we enjoy some southern fried chicken, barbecue and much more . The Weekly Update will let you know when your favorite southern comfort food will be featured! As usual, the salad bar will be available, as well as the Columbia Room menu . The Activities Committee will kick off our visit to Texas with a Chili Cookoff on July 6 .

Bill Long’s “Boston Lobster Feast” will come to BCYC July 13 . Cost for this feast that includes clam chowder, Maine lobster, potatoes, corn-on-the cob and authentic Boston Cream Pie is $95++ . Bill will be providing a live demonstration on the cooking of lobster for all to enjoy . Reservations are REQUIRED and must be made no later than July 7 .

Gourmet burgers will return for SNS in August . You can choose from beef, chicken, bison or veggie, and then add all your favorite condiments from a buffet table brimming with a magnificent collection of burger toppings .

Pop-Up Signature Dinners are back and were enjoyed by many in June . There will be one per month, and dates and details will be included in the Weekly Update . The July pop-up will take place Friday, July 5 . Be sure and join us and, as always, reservations are highly recommended . This assists Chef Georges in planning, purchasing and preparation .

We welcome your participation in the Food and Beverage Committee monthly meeting, held on the third Wednesday of the month at 6 p .m . General Manager Scott Jones attends these meetings, so it is a great opportunity to present your comments and suggestions .

Summer is finally here! The Junior Events Committee is excited to get out on the water and have some fun .

We kick off July with Karaoke Lounge Night, July 6, from 6-10 p .m . Parents can enjoy a fun night out at this event while the kids put on a karaoke show of their own in the Junior Room . Child care will be available for a small fee . Space is limited, so please contact Lori Curtin to reserve your spot .

Join us Sunday, July 14, for our Sunday Funday Pool Party Potluck from 2-5 p .m . on the lower patio . Soak up the sun and meet fellow members . Bring something to barbecue and a fun side dish to share . We are the only yacht club on the bay to offer a pool, so let’s enjoy it!

Be prepared to enjoy fun “pop-up” events in August, such as happy hour dinghy cruises . Summer is the best time at BCYC . Let’s have some fun .

If you would like your name added to our pop-up event list, please send an email to lori@marinadiamondandwatch .com

Sailing Into Summer!

Happy Birthday Roberta! Roberta and Lee Smith joined BCYC before the current club house was built . For many years, they cruised extensively on the West Coast . In 1978, they set off on their 35-foot Islander, Panacea, on their dream cruise . They sailed down the Central American coast, through the Panama Canal to the San Blas islands and then to Florida . In 2005, Roberta published a book titled “Hurry Up!! Drop The Dinghy!!” that was an account of this sailing adventure . Though no longer a member, Roberta has many fond memories of the friendships and activities that made BCYC her second home . Her husband, Lee, passed away four years ago, but nearing a milestone birthday, she reached out to General Manager Scott Jones who arranged for her to celebrate her 95th with a family dinner at BCYC . Congratulations Roberta!

BCYC’s Junior Sailing Program

Spreads Its Wings

Junior Sailing DirectorAubrey [email protected]

Our junior sailors have been extremely active this spring, both practicing and racing in regattas . We had the most sailors in our Spring Program ever with more than 20 participants in our Club 420 group . And, BCYC’s Sabot Racing Team has become a force to be reckoned with in the har-bor .

As many of you know, our Club 420 Racing team has joined forces with Lido Isle Yacht Club to create what has become known as the Newport Beach C420 Team (NB4T) . The word has got-ten out regarding the high level of coaching we provide at BCYC . In addition to participants from all four yacht clubs in the harbor, we also have sailors traveling from as far as Redondo Beach to join in on our practices . Our team has also been traveling north to Cabrillo Beach on weekends to practice in windier conditions than Newport typically yields as we get ready for the busy summer travel schedule, which includes: North American Championship in San Francisco; Junior Olympic Festival on Alamitos Bay; National Championship in Newport, Rhode Island; Hy-annis Regatta on Cape Cod; CFJ National Championship in Mission Bay; CJ Buckley National Team Racing Championship in East Greenwich, Rhode Island; and Buzzards Bay Regatta in New Bedford, Massachusetts .

In respect to Sabots, we also have similar type of energy building behind our re-imagined BCYC Sabot Racing Team . With Mark Gaudio at the helm, we have competed in the past four events as a cohesive unit, while also attracting players from other clubs to join in to receive a high lev-el of coaching . At the LIYC Spring Dinghy Regatta, Jett Brennan took 2nd place in Sabot A; Katharine Stone took 1st in C2s and Carter Immel 3rd; Isaac Stone took 1st in C1s and Caleb Everett 3rd . At ABYC’s Memorial Day Regatta (our first travel event of the season), Jett Brennan took 1st in Sabot A; Isaac Stone took 1st in C1; Katharine Stone took 2nd in C2; and Benjamin Gregory took 1st in C3 . At LIYC’s Junior Commodore’s Cup, the newest member of BCYC’s Sabot Racing Team, Lido’s own Chase Decker, took 1st in Sabot A, while Jett Brennan took 3rd; Caleb Everett took 1st in C1 and Adam Mead 2nd; and, Carter Immel won C2 moving up in class . Last, but not least, at BCYC’s very own Junior Leukemia Cup June 2, our Sabots kept it rolling as Chase Decker took 2nd and Jett Brennan took 3rd in Sabot A (also winning the top fundraiser award); Jake Johansson won B; Adam Mead, Caleb Everett, and Carter Immel went 1-2-3 re-spectively in C1 . GO BCYC Sabot racing team, GO!

Attention all members, Camp Corinthian has begun . The program runs June 24-Aug . 2 and we have an awesome summer planned with a phenomenal coaching staff in place to develop our young sailors . The classes offered include: our Starfish class for children ages 5 to 7, led by credentialed teachers who will prepare developmentally appropriate activities, assisted by level one certified coaches who will introduce the sport of sailing while our life guard helps the group with their swimming technique; Sabot novice for sailors ages 7-11; Sabot beginner/intermediate (C3/C2), and advanced racing (A-C2) for sailors ages 8-17; Junior Mariners for sailors ages 9-14 that is geared toward seamanship and fostering a life-long love for sailing outside of a race course; and, our newly minted combined double-handed sailing program with LIYC that includes CFJ intermediate racing, geared toward sailors looking to sharpen their skills before going out for their high school sailing team this fall; and our most advanced offering, the Club 420 travel-ing racing team . Please stay tuned for more news about the BCYC Junior Program!

On the weekend of May 11-12, the Corona del Mar High School sailing team traveled to the High School Fleet Racing Nationals . The 2019 nationals sailed out of Sail Sand Point on Lake Washington in Seattle, Washington . This is the first national championship I have attended and it was interesting to see how it was different from a normal PCISA high school regatta . Instead of the different teams going out in sets, each A and B team would stay on the water for the entire day, both Saturday and Sunday . On Saturday, we had great wind for most of the day, but on Sunday, wind conditions required the Race Committee to move the race course . In order to view the races, coaches and alternate sailors loaded onto a barge to watch the championship from the water . Overall this was a really great experience . Our team placed fifth out of 20 teams in this national regatta . Yay for us!

Tradition

Vice CommodoreSandy [email protected]

Vice CommodoreGinny Lombardi

[email protected]

A long-held yacht club tradition, nationally and internationally, is the exchange of club burgees . I had the rare opportunity to be part of this tradition last month .

While sitting in the Columbia Room, a woman from a French yacht club, Cercle de la Voile de Paris, was introduced to me . Her name was Mme Fabienne Dierck and she informed me her yacht club was established in 1858 . She wanted to exchange burgees with BCYC so we did . There was nothing formal in the exchange and we had a nice time talking . What a surprise to find out our burgees were the same! Staff Commodore Jim Ensign was present and we captured the moment in this picture . Fabienne extended an invitation to our members to visit her club which is 20 miles east of Paris: 30 rue Albert Glandaz 78130 LES MUREAUX (cvparis2@free .fr) . If you are in the area, accept her invitation!

On June 1, BCYC competed in the Predicted Log event, with Hollywood Yacht Club winning the race . Tradition dictates the losing club presents the winner with a bottle of Grand Marnier, which is then shared amongst all of those present – it was very good . Thanks to General Manager Scott Jones and our staff for making this event very successful .

Taco Tuesday races and after-party continue to be a big success, thanks in large part to the efforts of Rear Commodore Rhonda Tolar and her team! The BCYC Race Committee is a very important component . The races sponsored by BCYC would not happen without this dedicated group of volunteers .

Summer is upon us with many choices of activities for the family . Be sure to include BCYC in your plans .

Opening Day was fabulous! This was preceded on Friday night by Closing Night and the amazing Prime Rib Dinner, with many members enjoying the festivities . Committee chairs and fleet officers were acknowledged and each received a nice thank-you certificate good for a two-hour cruise on the club Duffy, Membership . On Opening Day, with many members and guests in attendance, the marina was full of our members’ boats with great décor, food and drinks . Thanks to all our dock teams, members and staff for making this a very fun and successful event .

Next year’s Showboat production and planning started for the show that will be staged in March, 2020, featuring Ginny Lombardi, our current vice commodore . Co-chairs are Secretary Kari Konopelsky, Ginny and me – let us know if you would like to join the cast . The theme of Showboat 2020 will be BCYC High School reunion .

This year’s Clambake theme will be Safari! This is always a great cruise for our club, especially for families . Chef Georges Rapicault, General Manager Scott Jones, and several staff will join us as we enjoy Catalina Island, great food and games . Come join the adventure .

Junior Staff Commodore Jerry Shandera, and Dee, have planned a land and lake Junior Staff Commodore cruise, Aug . 15-18, in Lake Arrowhead . Some members are booking mountain homes, while others will be staying at the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa or nearby Bed and Breakfast accommodations . Come join the fun on this cruise on and off the water .

Las CommodorasCarol [email protected]

Three members hosted our Progressive Luncheon at their beautiful homes “by the sea, the beautiful sea .” Everyone in attendance thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful food while overlooking our lovely Newport Harbor . Thanks to our most gracious hosts, the Bonjas, Mary Ellen Bowman and the Wells, who provided their elegant homes, and to Nancy Bryant for chairing this most popular affair .

The next Las Commodoras event will be a day at the Del Mar races July 18 . This occasion sells out quickly, so make your reservations early . We will leave the club at 10:30 a .m . in a luxurious bus, enjoying champagne, wine and snacks on the drive south . What could be more fun than being with friends on our ride down to Del Mar, betting on your favorite filly and maybe returning home with a fatter wallet?

Ladies, make sure you wear your finest Kentucky Derby-style hat because there will be a contest for the best hat – the winner will be hosted at one of our upcoming luncheons . See you all there with your significant others and friends .

Now let’s get cooking! The Chopped Luncheon with Chef Georges Rapicault will be Saturday, Sept . 14 . We will audition contestants soon, so watch your email for details . Please note – there will be no Las Commodoras event in August .

Come Safari With Us

CruisingLauri [email protected]

Ronda [email protected]

Have you signed up for Clambake Safari yet? If not, you better get on that right away, because those safari drums you hear in the distance are calling you to that far off island called Catalina . Signups have already begun for this cruise, but you still have time to get your name in and join us at Cat Harbor . Our awesome BCYC staff will be there to make sure we are properly fed and hydrated . This year, safari games will include build-a-boat contest (everyone’s favorite), kite flying, bunco, appetizer contest and much more . Clambake Safari is set for July 25-28 . Come safari with us!

Junior Staff Commodore Jerry Shandera, and Dee, invite you to the 2019 Junior Staff Commodore cruise to Lake Arrowhead, Aug . 15-18 . You can sign up for this cruise beginning July 5 . Come enjoy the beautiful scenery and fresh mountain air! For this cruise, you can book lodging at either the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa, located on the lake inside the village, or gather some friends together and rent a cabin . Currently, we have plans to have happy hour at Lake Arrowhead Yacht Club on Friday evening . On Saturday, we hope you will join us for a scenic and relaxing cruise aboard the Lake Arrowhead Queen . There is much history in Lake Arrowhead and our tour guide will be able to share some worthwhile and interesting information about the lake . After the one-hour cruise, we will head over to Papagayos Restaurant for lunch .

There is free time scheduled during this cruise, which should give everyone plenty of opportunity to rent a boat, schedule spa time at the resort, or just chill and take in the view . For those adventure seekers, we may try to find an “easy” hike at the lake .

Next up is the Newport Raft-Up, scheduled for Aug . 30-Sept . 1 . More information will follow on this always-fun event .

Come join us on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p .m . to contribute any ideas you might have about cruising . You can also call Ronda Rolnicki (714-404-3633) with any questions .

Five Tuesdays!

Sail Fleet CaptainsDon White [email protected]

Paul [email protected]

Many Newport Beach-area residents celebrate July with the patriotic boat parade, barbecue and cold beer .

BCYC Race Committee will celebrate July by running the second race of the Around the Oil Islands Race and running five…yes five…Taco Tuesday evening races . A month with five Taco Tuesdays…what could be better?

We are also in final planning mode for the Aug . 9-11 Leukemia Cup Regatta, where we will host a number of international competitors racing their Farr 40s, plus a separate venue for PHRF boats . Three days of racing and three post-race parties will make this an event for BCYC to remember . But it’s not all about racing .

The Leukemia Cup Regatta is a series of events hosted by BCYC for the express purpose of raising funds to support research for cures for leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers . Some regatta events have already occurred and some are on the horizon .

If you play golf or just want to leisurely stroll the fairways and greens for exercise, be sure to sign up for the Leukemia Cup Golf Tournament July 31 . Sign up now on the BCYC website .

Even if you don’t own a boat, or it’s one of those without a sail, you can still participate in the regatta by sponsoring a racing team . Or, just start your own fund-raising team .

BCYC has raised more than $1 .6 million for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society already . Let’s all do our part this year to reach the next level!

Important StuffDID YOU KNOW ?

Did you know that if your dining reservation is for more than 10 people, you need to contact Bruce Fottrell or Tasha Michalowski in the BCYC Food and Beverage Department? Bruce or Tasha will make sure we have the correct table arrangement and service staff available to provide you with excellent service. Note that the club office staff can no longer add to your reservation for parties larger than 10.

Did you know that if you need to cancel your reservation for a member event, you must cancel three or more days before the event, when the club is open? This will allow you to avoid receiving a cancelation charge.

Did you know that when you come to the club marina and use the guest dock, you should have a reservation, check in at the club office and fly the BCYC burgee? When you come into the club marina by Duffy or dinghy to enjoy lunch or dinner at BCYC, please fly the BCYC burgee and check in at the club office. By doing this, club staff can make certain you will be accommodated and receive the best possible service.
