Dining at DomeI read your feature on Dome Café. My husband and I have recently shifted to Bahrain. Dome was one of the first cafes that we tried out and I must say that I agree with the views of diners that have been featured in the article. The menu is so varied and the food is great. Also the ambience is good to just sit down and relax at any time of the day. My favourite there is the Mini Burger platter!Polly, Juffair

My favourite is the Gold Rush, Polly! Hope you ’re settling down well on this beautifu l island!

Best Rides!I was happy to read the Nissan Sentra review in your magazine. I contacted the Nissan showroom in Sitra for a test drive. It looks really great – very stylish and is a great ride for everyday use. I’m planning to book one this month. Your Car News section is fantastic. Keep up the good work!Anonymous

Thanks so much! We’re glad you like our Car News section – one of our magazine’s most popular section. We always try and cover the best and the latest in the automobile industry. Congratulations for your new car!

Fun Corner FanI’m not really a horoscopes person and so I generally skip that page in your magazine. That said I loved the fun corner

you included in your last issue. I suppose it was there for the previous

issue as well. Very interesting! I particularly love the ‘Word of the Month’. It’s a great way to boost vocab. Good going!Soma, Adliya

Thanks a lot, Soma! We were really looking for ways to refresh the horoscope page and we loved the fun corner idea. Glad you enjoyed it!

Gift to ‘Womankind’The Bobby Brown retouching powder is a miracle! You’ve rightly called it a gift to ‘womankind’. I can never get enough of make-up products and I found this one so interesting. Simply love Beauty Buzz, guys! Tara, Arad

Thanks, Tara! Now, girls just want to have fun, don’t we! Stay beautifu l!

More Stories, please!Hello, I’m a regular reader of Bahrain Confidential. I loved the story you did on women achievers. I request you to do more stories and interviews as they are really interesting to read. All the best!Reader

We’ ll surely keep that in mind! If you have any interesting stories then do share them with us.

Bahrain

Once upon a time, Bahrain was called, ‘ the paradise of Dilmun’ a place for perfect happiness. John Ridley takes us back to those times…

“Today, the kingdom has little arable land, and like other countries in the region, suffers from a shortage of water.”

F

John R Ridley

ive thousand years ago, the Sumerians called the legendary lush lands, with their sweet-water springs and extensive palm groves, “the paradise of Dilmun”. Arab merchants described it as “a place of perfect

happiness, where the inhabitants were eternally young and suffered no illnesses, where the raven did not croak and wolves and lions did not devour their prey.”

Today, the lands are known as Bahrain - the two seas. The Arabian Gulf is the first, and the second, the abundant natural fresh water - on the land and off the shores of the islands.

The sweet water springs on the sea bed allowed pearl diving ships to replenish their supply of fresh water during the long diving season - without the need to come ashore. Mixing of the freshwater, and the warm shallow waters off the Bahraini coast, give the pearls, regarded as the best in the world, their unmatched lustre.

“The springs rising from aquifers deep underground, and under the sea, were described in the ancient Sumerian legend of Enki and Ninhursag.”

“... the waters rose up from it into her great basins. Her cities drank water aplenty from them...and her fields produced grain.”

The ancient inhabitants of Bahrain nurtured and cared for the environment, worshipping water as a sign of their devotion to Enki, the God of Freshwater.

Then, there were more than two hundred freshwater springs across Bahrain, they carried the gift of long life and healing; their names live on in legend, song, and folklore.

The water from the springs irrigated the land, bringing drinking water, agriculture, food security, and life to Bahrain - known as the “land of a million palms”. With so many in just 750 square kilometers, the highly revered trees were always in sight.

Today, the kingdom has little arable land, and like other countries in the region, suffers from a shortage of water. Yet, despite low, and declining rainfall, and no natural renewable sources of water; Bahrain remains relatively green - partly resulting from the efforts of the many people working to protect the countryside and much of the nation’s heritage

Lebanese artist Fatima El Hajj’s imagination

Once UponA Canvasknows no bounds; her paintings reflect

her passion for nature and its myriad moods. Bahrain Confidential’s Pooja Rajpal Kasala

chats with Fatima about her journey as an artist.

Tell us about yourself?I was born in Wardanieh, Lebanon.

Since my early days, I was fascinated by nature and the change of seasons which reflected beautifully in my family’s land, where they grew all types of vegetables and roses just in front of our house. I enjoyed helping my family in the field for regular housekeeping, which had a big impact on my art later on. My passion for colours came from my daily observation of roses blooming and the continuous change of seasons. So when I sat in my garden to draw, I learnt to include all shades of greens, red, and yellows.

A Canvas

What inspires your creativity?

Whatever my eyes see is a provocative project that moves the static subconscious. Travelling inspires me, whether it’s spiritual, through reading and meditation, or physical, through my several trips to Paris- where I’m always exposed to its new and old aspects.

Inspired by Le Penseur of Rodin, I came by “The Thinker” trilogy; you will see that in my exhibition. And what also got my attention was the focus on civilizations like the Middle East, Japan, and China.

What kind of colors, elements do you work with?

Human is the key element of my current works; especially, while reading. With paintings of all colors, I wanted to change the notion emphasized by even the United Nations, that people have stopped reading or don’t read.

I love colours, I can’t live or express without them!

Tell us about the exhibition taking place in Bahrain.

I have been thinking about it since years now. Reading opens the vessels of the soul; taking us to a

world of serenity, where we purify ourselves from hate and the body gets rid of its toxins. From that, I wanted the exhibition to be a salute to the book and to reading; and reading not the abridged kind that we get from the internet or through summaries. Touching a book leaves you in a state of intimacy that you don’t find anywhere else.

Which aspects of the Middle East culture do we see in your paintings?

Light is the main aspect of my paintings. We can’t take any credit for it as our land is the land of light and I pray that it stays as bright and enlightened as ever

“I wanted the exhibition to be a salute to the book and to reading.”

Visions aspects sculptured years,

Of memories, instructions seared

From views of growth inspired anew,

In mornings when we drank our dew,

And apparitions’ hopes stayed fresh,

As new days dawning’s image met,

Creations from ambitions rest,

Bequeathing scenes, replenished zest.

And Winters harvest arbitrates,

To waken lives that conjugates,

Enchanted by a trance thereof,

In slumbered dreams replete with love,

Renewed exhaustions for life’s length,

F1 Special

The countdown has begun for F1! Bahrain Confidential’s racing-special feature brings you what’s on and what’s not for the much awaited weekend. Also, an EXCLUSIVE about the only team from Bahrain to participate in this year’s 12-Hour Endurance Championship, at Dubai.

Special Ready. Get Set. Go!

F1

Dubai Kartdrome held its annual 12-Hour Endurance Championship 2013, last month. Teams of three to ten racers each were tested for the maximum number of laps completed between 2 pm on 15th March 2013 and 2 am on 16th March 2013. The Racing Falcons (RF) was the only team from the kingdom that participated in the Championship. This was their first race at Dubai. In addition to bagging the

Team Racing Falcons

Page 37: Bahrain Confidential April 2013

F1 Special

Special 25th position out of 30 teams they also bagged the ‘Newbie Trophy’ – a title given to the team that is participating for the first time at the race, with the best finish.

“The race is not just a test against time but also strategy,” says Anup Surendran, Founder of RF and a car-enthusiast, (Standing, extreme right) “the racers’ physical and mental strength is assessed.” RF was created on 15th July 2011 with a vision to make a mark on the national and international racing canvas. The 8-member team has been racing, professionally for two years now and unofficially before that. Some of the tracks they’ve covered are Adhari Circuit, Gulf Speed One Circuit and Viva Karting Track in Bahrain and recently The Dubai Kartdrome in Dubai.

We ask them if there is a different feel when racing on different tracks. “The major difference is the scale of the racing event,” says Anup, “For instance, Dubai Autodrome attracts a larger number of spectators and racers from all over the world when compared to Viva Karting Track (VKT). Of course this is because VKT is a newer track. Though, my team and I prefer the facilities and track-quality in Bahrain we

believe that kart-conditions are better at Dubai Kartdrome; also there is more consistency in quality across karts.

RF was formed by a group of friends who share their love for cars and races and they believe this is what makes them unique. “Most teams are put together by selecting fast and experienced racers,” says Anup, “we’re more like a family than a team. In fact some of our members never experienced racing before they joined the team.

RF has a host of Endurance and Sprint racing events lined up for 2013. “It’s an action-packed year for us,” says Anup, “and we’re not complaining! We’ve just finished the 24-Hour Endurance Championship in Bahrain and the 12-Hour Endurance Championship in Dubai, back-to-back. Currently we’re preparing for a 600-lap race, a 700-km race and the 24-Hours Endurance Races in Dubai.” With so much on their plate, all we can say is ‘Go’ Racing Falcon!

Mr DJ Flanders, the new General Manager speaks to Bahrain Confidential about his aspirations for the club.

Bahrain

D “...running a golf course is not rocket science; all it takes is treating people with respect, being a good communicator and paying attention to detail.”

J Flanders believes that The Royal Golf Club (RGC) is already the best in the kingdom. What he wants to achieve as the club’s new GM is making it top-of-the class in the Middle East. Surely this isn’t an easy task given that there are so many good golfing clubs in the region. Isn’t international tourism a challenge? “Well it is,” he admits, “but now that we are under the Troon Golf umbrella it’s

much easier. We don’t have to invest our resources to promote ourselves as they market us and this gives us great international exposure. They send information onto cruise ships. In Abu Dhabi professionals have visited as well. Efforts are also being made to arrange golfing lessons on board, with dissolvable balls perhaps. It was tougher before Troon as marketing expenses were higher which meant lower returns.”

DJ tells us how he spent his first five months negotiating a few contracts and eliminating those that didn’t make sense. The over

heads were high but he felt weren’t enhancing the members’ experience at the club. “We decided to spend money in areas where our members would see it,” says DJ. He goes on to cite an instance about a supplier that they had a contract with. The club was paying twice as much for the same level of service but after negotiations they now pay the market rates that they should be paying. “It freed up a lot of cash and gave us the liquidity we needed to put back into our operations,” he says. DJ believes that the trick lies in working smarter than harder!

In addition to resource reallocation, he shares that he had to address member grievances as well. “We managed to reach out to them,” he says. DJ used increased communication and transparency to address shortfalls. For instance RGC enhanced their website; earlier the club got in touch with members primarily through emails. More over their webpage didn’t make members feel any different from non member guests. Now there is a back door on the website where the club talks only to members. “I have a weekly communication tool that I’m sending out to our members about all the happenings at the club,” he adds, “we’re also hosting monthly socials gatherings which have been received well. There are competitions and events too, exclusively for members.” RGC is looking at rolling out an interclub competition with some of the Troon properties within the region. Members now have access to all 210

golf courses worldwide under Troon, primarily at preferential rates and the club is ensuring that members make the most of these programmes.

RGC lost out on the Volvo tournament and DJ says that there has been some negative feed back in the past about the golf course. Nevertheless he thinks that the course is unique and what he likes most about it is that it challenges the player off the tee. He says, “It makes you play a good second shot and then you have to have a very good short game. There is no way to have weaknesses

in your game here with out being exposed.” DJ believes that the greens have a great design for a tour event as they are challenging. That said there is scope for improvement. For instance there are operational challenges because of how the course is set up. “There are not many pin placements and so traffic builds up in the same areas, which creates compaction and affects grass quality.”

DJ believes there is a lot of work ahead for him and his team. That said he knows that they can turn around the game for RGC in approximately two years with the kind of talent they possess. “Personality is something that can never be taught,” he says. He adds that this is something that his team already has – they always have a smile on their face or are mindful of using the guests’ names when they know them. His achievement in Abu Dhabi (the Troon golf course where he worked and that has

been awarded as the best in the Middle East) will provide him with a road map for his work here at RGC. “We’re trying to further hone our employees’ skills. One of the initiatives is teaching them golf so that they know what they’re doing or could even strike an intelligent conversation with our guests.” He adds that running a golf course is not rocket science; all it takes is treating people with respect, being a good communicator and paying attention to detail.

DJ comes from a golfing family and had aspirations to be a golfer himself. He has played junior golf against the legendary Tiger Woods! “I’m a hard worker in business,” he says, “though I wish I had worked harder to pursue golfing.”

Apart from Abu Dhabi, DJ has handled golf courses in the States and Japan

“RGC is looking at rolling out an interclub competition with some of the Troon properties within the region.”

The new style audio, both entertaining and energizing is an enchanting companion. Check out the stylish and wireless- Yamaha ISX-B820.

Free To DanceEnjoy a Musical InteriorWith a sleek stand and minimal proportions, Restio looks like a work of art. It was created by completely re-imagining the concept of a music source as part of the interior. The independent body style makes music an interior design element, and because the sides are slanted, it appears to be a thin panel. The front grille uses expanded metal, providing an attractive texture. The striped pattern printed underneath the grille conveys a feeling of depth, giving the impression that the music is coming from within the entire front surface. Merging beautifully into the living space, this is an entirely new audio form that you can match to your lifestyle.

Minimal Design Allows Flexible PlacementWith a 9cm body and a half-moon shaped stand, you can position Restio right up against a wall. What’s more, the standalone style doesn’t require a shelf, so there are no restrictions on where you can put it. You can even remove the stand and hang it on a wall (requires an optional bracket AT-800). It’s the perfect way to match your music source to any room’s decor.

Freedom of Movement and UseBuilt-in Bluetooth® means that you can enjoy all the music stored on your iPhone, Android and other smartphones wirelessly. Put your Restio wherever you want it, and use your smartphone as you usually do to operate the playback functions.

With Yamaha’s DTA Controller app, you can set the alarm time differently for each day of the week, as well as make detailed IntelliAlarm settings and transmit them wirelessly. The app is compatible with iOS devices (iPod, iPhone) and will be periodically updated for additional functionality.

Sound That Lets You Appreciate MusicUsing a two-way, four-speaker system finely tuned to HiFi audio standards, Restio is designed for premium quality sound. Delivering powerful, expansive bass and crisp, precisely contoured treble, it ensures complete enjoyment of everything from the fast kick of a bass drum to gentle sounds and vocals that seem to be right in front of you. It also includes a three-band equaliser, so you can adjust the sound to match the type of music and your own preferences.

Time — Artistically DisplayedThe stylish digital clock gives you a choice of two patterns: the usual number display and a unique display that combines numbers and an indicator. An auto dimmer function adjusts the brightness of the display to match the brightness of the room. It also features Yamaha’s IntelliAlarm, which first gently plays the music of your choice and then beeps to ensure that you are fully awake

Advertorial

There are things which will always fascinate us- because they are rare, because they are beautiful or because they are things which give us more than we demand of them, individuality for example, or perfection, or simply the awareness of owning something unique.

The name of Maybach has stood for exceptional luxury for more than eighty years. And it stands for the very few things which are permitted to carry the Maybach name. Maybach Eyewear from IVKO GmbH is one of them.

As a high-end automobile brand, for decades Maybach has symbolized the most exacting demands on quality and luxury. Characteristics

are intricately worked along with exquisite materials and outstanding design. The name and the standards of the exclusive Maybach brand are today carried by premium eyewear and accessories. An exclusiveness appreciated by a genuine connoisseur.

Wilhelm Maybach and his son Karl Maybach laid the cornerstone for a brand which has today grown into a legend. The most precise handcrafting and love of detail distinguish the characteristic style, appealing to all the senses. The models of the eyeglass collection from Maybach Eyewear unite traditional and modern aspects and have a firm place in the luxury eyewear sector.

These sought-after frames are created using only the most select materials, such as combinations of fine woods, leather, titanium and 18 karat solid white, yellow and rose gold, and, if desired, diamonds. These materials are painstakingly worked, step by step, using the best of German handcrafting techniques. The elegant designs pay homage to the individuality of the wearer.

Health

John Ridley highlights the importance of choosing good and healthy food.

Food

John R Ridley

he latest European wide food scandal has again highlighted concerns about the safety and quality of our food.

Two generations ago, most of our food was produced and sold locally by

independent butchers, bakers, and green grocers; under the pressure of our modern lifestyles, we have chosen convenience and speed of preparation in preference to cooking with fresh produce.

We have opted for ready prepared meals, pre-packed portions of meat, and ready washed and peeled bags of standard size vegetables, often shipped across the world; buying and cooking

locally grown produce has all but stopped. From the animals we rear, to the

crooked, muddy vegetables grown in farmer’s fields, we have broken our relationship with the food that sustains us.

We blame the current and earlier scandals upon agricultural production methods, the way we feed our animals, the supermarkets, and the complex web of the supply chains. Yet, as consumers, we have chosen to isolate ourselves from the production of the food we eat. The

T

rise of supermarkets was driven by the consumer demand for ever-greater convenience and lower costs. They responded to our demands by driving down the prices they pay producers; is it not inevitable that different pressures and forces came

into play?Playing off suppliers, one

against the other, does not improve quality or lower

prices. It is the responsibility of producers, retailers, and consumers to understand the complete chain, from farm, through to the

meals we prepare for our families - only with this understanding, can we consider quality or the cost.

We all have a choice in what we eat, it may not be possible to talk with the producers of all our food, but, where possible, buy from shops that know the source of their products; make a point of talking to the shop staff. The staff of smaller shops, like Organic Foods in Seef Mall, are knowledgeable, and are happy to make time to discuss their produce.

Many reject organic produce on financial grounds, but eating a 100%

organic diet does not have to increase your grocery bill; by cooking from basic ingredients, instead of buying more expensive processed foods, you can adjust your spending and be confident of the quality of what you are eating

John Ridley, a Bahrain based journalist, writer, and broadcaster, can be contacted at [email protected] or visit his website, www.ghostwriting.me

Kelly Armatage, our resident Counsellor, Life Coach and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist highlights the importance of serving oneself for a healthy and happy existence.

I

Kelly ArmatageSelft is amazing how many clients I see that own the following cognitive distortion (negative thought pattern); “If I am good and serve others selflessly, I will receive love”. Thus creating codependent actions and behaviours, that impact all intimate relationships that they

are involved in. When we look for love via acting in

certain ways and expecting others to act in certain ways; we NEVER experience what true love is. As this method is trying to gain love and security outside of ourselves. Someone that has the cognitive distortion of “If I give more, I will get the validation I crave” will be exhibiting the following behaviours:

Extreme reactions to other people’s so called ‘rejections’ Desperate need to get attention/approval and love from others Over-giving to others, in order to feel secure and needed Extreme focus on the flaws of others A lack of focus on the strengths and good points of others A lack of self-focus on their own lives A need to fix, repair and solve other people’s imperfections A lack of self-appreciation, self-value and self-love

This way of behaving is extremely negative, delusional and causes a lot of

painful emotions for the person exhibiting the initial thought patterns. Generally, giving off the vibe of “I need you to love me”, will attract the very people that are emotionally unavailable or untrustworthy to be in a relationship with.

This type of thinking ensures dependency on a partner for security and pleasure and 9 times out of 10 will provide nothing but insecurity and pain. What will happen is an over serving to others, a sacrifice of inner needs and an obsessive focus on the relationship.

In order to counteract these thinking patterns, healing is required of the negative thoughts and creation and maintenance of new, more empowering thought models such as the following:

I am responsible for feeling secure, happy and content I can only fix my life, never another’s problems Over-giving just ensures I will be taken for granted Love comes from inside, as opposed to outside I am open to being treated with respect, care and support I know I am lovable, despite other people’s behaviour

By the creation of these new thought patterns; the relevant feelings and actions will follow that support the fresh perceptions. What then occurs is a healthier self esteem,a better life and an improved relationship experience for the previously codependent individual.

The key is in serving self first (to feel secure) and serving others if we wish (because we want to unconditionally give).

The ways we can serve ourselves could be as follows: - Meditation and prayer to improve positive thought patterns Lots of self pampering activities Eating nutritionally and regular exercise Removing any negative habits, that only serve self-punishment Focus on career, health, social activities, hobbies in a balanced way Regular workshops and self-development/therapy Achieving of dream goals with flow, faith and confidence

Serving self is not a selfish way to be, it is the only way that is imperative to a healthy and happy existence. Serving ourselves ensures our relationships are loving, balanced and harmonious.

Serving ourselves ensures we break out of painful past patterns and move forward into powerful and positive patterns for a promising, loving future. Maybe you will ponder this; just what within you is in need of your serving today?

Rehan Ahmed talks about how climate change is impacting our lives.

“Sea levels are rising, glaciers are melting and precipitation patterns are changing”

EEng. Rehan Ahmed

Eng. Rehan Ahmed, Head of Waste Disposal Unit, Supreme Council for the Environment. Email: [email protected]

Earth Day 2013The Face of

Climate Changearth Day is celebrated annually on April 22 marking the anniversary of what many consider, the birth of modern environmental movement. The Earth Day was first organized in 1970 to promote

respect for life on the planet and to encourage awareness on air, water and soil pollution.

Earth Day has now grown into a global tradition making it the largest civic observance in the world, with more than a billion people expected to take part this year in approximately 192 countries.

The global theme for Earth Day 2013 is “The Face of Climate Change”. It highlights the mounting impact of climate change on individuals around the world. Earlier people thought that climate change was a remote problem, but now it’s already impacting us and our finite resources.

Climate change is affecting the social and environmental determinants of health, clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient food and secure shelter. Global warming

that has occurred since the 1970s has caused over 140,000 excess deaths annually since 2004.

As per WHO, the direct damage cost to health is around USD 2-4 billion/year by 2030. Many of the major killers such as diarrhoeal diseases, malnutrition, malaria and dengue are highly climate-sensitive and are expected to worsen as the climate gets impacted further.

Over the last 50 years, human activities particularly the burning of fossil fuels have released sufficient quantities of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to trap additional heat in the lower atmosphere and affect the global climate. The CO2 levels have increased 38%, methane levels 148%, nitrous oxide is up 15%.

In the last century, the world has warmed by approximately 0.75oC. Over the last 25 years, the rate of global warming has accelerated at over 0.18oC per decade. Sea levels are rising, glaciers are melting and precipitation patterns are changing. Extreme weather events are becoming more intense and frequent.

As per WHO, globally the number

of reported weather-related natural disasters has more than tripled since the 1960s. Every year, these disasters result in over 60,000 deaths, mainly in developing countries. Rising sea levels and increasingly extreme weather events will destroy our lands and other essential services.

All populations will be affected by climate change, but some are more vulnerable than others. People living in small islands like Bahrain and other coastal regions, megacities and mountainous and polar regions are particularly vulnerable.

Earth Day is a day for action; a chance to show how important the environment is to us. Earth Day is about uniting voices around the globe in support of a healthy planet. The earth is what we all have in common.

Let us be a part of this green revolution and participate in Earth Day activities moving from single-day actions, such as park cleanups and tree-planting parties, to long-term actions and commitments.

The message of the Earth Day is to “Actively participate and adopt environmental friendly habits”

Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa’s 2nd year AnniversarySofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa celebrated their second year anniversary with an Annual Ambassador Party at the Al Nakheel Ballroom on 24th February.

Big Deal is a group buying website that posts the best discounted deals on Bahrain’s favourite outlets ranging from products, services, health and lifestyle to travel and events.

For businesses in the Kingdom, it offers an exciting new way to market their products and get free online advertising and for consumers it puts the power of numbers in your hands. Because once a desired product is offered with a “big deal” all you have to do as an interested consumer is get your friends, family and everyone you possibly can, interested in the Big Deal and it’s yours! Not only do you get a product, service, trip or event - you get it at the price you want!

How Big Deal works for businesses? What Big Deal needs is for the merchant to set the minimum target that he would need to generate from the deal. Then Big Deal, posts the offer on their website for free. The company has a database of active consumers, and if the merchant has an existing database, Big Deal can tap into that too.

The email advertisement then goes out to hundreds of customers who are reached through both the Big Deal website and their email addresses - if they’ve registered with Big Deal- as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

In addition, the customers are motivated to promote the deal to their friends. So there’s a huge knock-on effect and the customer has a hand in being part of the activation of the deal, to make sure the deal reaches its minimum number of people. Users tell their friends using Facebook, Twitter, email or phone. Until Big Deal reaches the target the merchant sets, the deal will not go live.

If the target that the merchant has set is achieved - the deal will go live! That means that consumers that have signed on for the deal will get the coupon automatically sent to their inbox which they can print and use like cash.

If the stipulated minimum isn’t reached then the deal doesn’t go live. The only down side to that is that there’s no change to the merchant’s status. The up side is that even if the deal doesn’t go through the merchant will not be charged.

Using Big Deal is secure and easy for customers too!Shopaholics can rejoice! Right on their computers, they know where the best deals

are on offer! That’s because all users have to do is check out the Big Deal website every day to see the latest Big Deals or subscribe to a Bargain Alert and they get the deals emailed to them every morning. What’s more payment is made through the safe, secure, highly encrypted Credimax payment gateway.

When a Big Deal goes live, in other words, when enough people have joined to activate the deal, Big Deal sends them a coupon that they can print and use like cash.

On the one hand it guarantees the best offer for the people of Bahrain to enjoy and on the other hand it guarantees footfall and revenue for the member establishment.

What Big Deal offers is a bridge between the retailer and potential customers.

It’s truly a win-win case. The merchant now has another very lively channel of highly focused, targeted advertising – for which he pays nothing unless it results in sales. Which other medium offers him this? That’s why it’s called a Big Deal.

The New 2013

he 300C embodies Chrysler’s vision of what a large Executive sedan should be,” said Godwin

D’Cruz, Sales & Marketing Manager at M/s. Ahmed Zayani & Sons WLL. “The 300 series sedans with rear wheel drive appeal to a wide audience base, thanks to their awesome blend of luxury and performance.”

“The 2013-300 embodies the very best of Chrysler’s inherent qualities of style and executive comfort coupled to rear-wheel drive performance. The 300C and 300S takes these virtues to an even higher level to provide discerning customers in the Middle East with more luxury, performance and style,” he added.

The latest Chrysler 300 has three more gear ratios in the proven ZF eight-speed automatic transmission which help to reduce the gaps normally associated

with upshifting and downshifting. Its powerful 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine pumps 292 horsepower offering quicker acceleration and smoother shifts. Quicker shifts are possible as a result of a Sport shift mode – gear changes are quicker and revolutions are held higher for even more performance-oriented acceleration and higher shift dynamics. For even more control, the driver can also use a pair of die-cast steering-wheel mounted paddle controls and view gear selection through an all-new full-colour EVIC centred in the Chrysler 300S’s instrument cluster.

The saloon features 3.5-inch speakers located in the instrument panel, two 3.5-inch speakers located in the rear doors, two 6 x 9-inch front-door woofers providing bass, two 6 x 9-inch speakers and a centre-mounted 8-inch speaker located in the rear-shelf area providing full-range audio. There is the Uconnect Touch system that has been upgraded for 2013, adding voice commands for

Garmin navigation and more iPod control features to expand on the system’s world-class infotainment, connectivity and convenience technologies.

The new Chrysler 300 has been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), achieving their highest rating. IIHS recognises vehicles with outstanding crashworthiness in front, side, rollover and rear crashes. It has standard Electronic Stability Control systems that help reduce crashes. Other standard safety features include, full-length side-curtain airbags, seat-mounted side thorax air bags, driver’s knee bag, front-row reactive head restraints, Hill-start Assist, Rain Brake Support and Ready Alert Braking

Review by Chelsea Copenhaver

The All-newCadillac ATS

GM recently introduced the Cadillac ATS as their answer to an entry level luxury model in the compact sport sedan segment. To say that the introductory model ATS is a strong first

effort would be a gross understatement. While not perfect, the ATS manages to score quite a few points on all fronts and certainly brings something new and exciting to the segment.

I recently had the opportunity to try out the ATS on Bahrain’s roads. Being a long time Cadillac aficionado, I was pretty excited for the chance to spend a day behind the wheel of the ATS and I am happy to say that I was definitely not disappointed!

At first glance, the ATS looks like a smaller, slightly sportier version of the CTS. As with it’s older siblings, the ATS exudes the class and sophistication symbolic of Cadillac, yet this time with a sporty edge. Despite the smaller wheelbase, the ATS does not come across as a compact sedan whatsoever. The ATS didn’t go overboard on the flash, keeping chrome trim subtle, and the illuminated door handle inserts and vertical headlights that sweep up the hood line are lovely touches.

This is evident, however, in the interior

of the vehicle. The rear legroom and trunk space are on the smaller side for the segment, but still offer plenty of space and comfort. The interior is undeniably opulent and is outfitted with luxury materials such as carbon fiber, wood, aluminum and leather. The display is glossy, crisp, and lavish, completed by the 8 inch touch screen featuring the Cadillac CUE infotainment system adds to the sleek design. Navigating the CUE system really takes some getting used to, but once I pulled over and spent some time figuring it out, it was actually quite well thought out and functional.

Where the ATS really shines, however, is with the uncompromised driving experience. The ATS is seated on the new Alpha platform and engineers worked hard to keep the weight under 3500 pounds even in the models with larger engines. This, combined with nearly perfect 50-50 front rear weight distribution, and a finely tuned MRC suspension that adjusts to match road conditions, gives you a car that is exceptionally agile and incredibly fun to drive. Shift the ATS into sport mode, and the feedback you get from

the car makes it feel truly alive even when moseying though Manama traffic, which is really saying something! The reflexes and precise handling are impressive, but somehow don’t make the ATS lose any of its excitement.

The base model ATS comes equipped on the modest side with a 2.5 litre ecotec 4 cylinder engine with 200 horsepower, 191 pounds feet of torque and an acceleration from 0-60 of 7.5 seconds. The next step up with the ATS is a 2.0L with 272 hp and 260 pounds – feet of torque and hits 60mph in 5.7 seconds. The top of the line ATS comes fully equipped with a 3.6L engine which generates 321 hp and 275 pounds – feet of torque, speeding to 60mph at 5.4 seconds.

All in all, the Cadillac ATS was a fun drive with a sophisticated look, and beyond impressive for a first effort. The car is confident and commanding, and certainly on par with it’s competitors

Establishing a new luxury sedan benchmark.

Bentley’sNew Flying Spur

With the blend of effortless driveability, exquisite luxury and craftsmanship, sculpted design and state-of-the-

art technology, the new Flying Spur has taken the worldwide success of its iconic predecessor further with its global debut in Geneva.

“The Flying Spur meets the desires of the customers perfectly and is a car only Bentley could make – timeless design inside and out, elegant lines, ultimate material quality, attention to detail, class leading refinement and, of course, effortless performance.”

The athletic design of the new Flying Spur combines traditional Bentley styling cues with a sporting stance and detail. The sharp feature lines complement muscular

rear haunches, while LED day-time running lights, dipped headlights and taillights characterise the front and rear profiles.

The interior is luxurious, has a spacious cabin that has advanced acoustic and electronic technologies with hand-crafted leather hides and wood veneers. It includes 600 new parts, with only the sun visors, grab handles, armrests and some of the front console and controls carried over from the previous generation. The new seats use a softer

yet more durable hide unique to Bentley and are available in twelve different colours. To complete the luxurious and opulent nature of the cabin, the roof lining and pillars are also trimmed in natural leather.

Bentley’s development and use of lightweight acoustic

under floor panels to minimise road noise continues, with aerodynamically optimised insulating sections applied to almost the entire under floor of the car. Side glazing and both front and rear screens are made in acoustic glass, featuring a specially developed interlayer that reduces noise transmission.

The power steering system provides a comfort-orientated balance whilst maintaining optimum steering feel and

precision throughout the speed range. A new specification of steering gear, together with a new calibration of the speed-sensitive system that regulates hydraulic fluid flow, provides variable assistance depending on vehicle speed.

With outstanding ride comfort of vital importance, the independent computer-controlled air suspension of the new Flying Spur is redesigned to maximise impact absorption and isolation.

Also, driver and passengers can interface with the outside world through touch-screen infotainment, mobile connectivity (Wi- fi), a Rear Seat Entertainment suite and a new hand-held Touch Screen Remote which allows rear-cabin occupants to control an extensive range of features from the comfort of their seat. An eight-channel, eight-speaker audio system with Balanced Mode Radiators provide high quality sound clarity.

Powering the new Flying Spur is Bentley’s 6.0-litre, twin turbo W12 engine, coupled to a ZF eight-speed transmission. Developing 616 bhp and 800 Nm of torque, the new Flying Spur features more power than any Bentley four-door in history

The Meat Co by Rebecca Cooksey

f you’re looking for a great night out with buzzing atmosphere then book a table at The Meat Co.

Established in 2000, The Meat Co was the vision of two of South Africa’s most successful restaurateurs, Bradley Michael and Costa Tomazos, who in their own words wanted to – “Provide

a unique and exceptionally enjoyable steakhouse dining experience that catered to meat lovers in a sophisticated yet relaxed environment.” And that’s exactly what they have achieved.

As I’m already a fan of The Meat Co it didn’t take much persuading when I was asked to do a review. I tend to eat there at lunch time so I was pleasantly surprised to see just how busy it was in the evening!

The restaurant itself is very spacious and sprawls across three floors, including the roof top which is really enjoyable in this pleasant weather. Beautifully decorated and not at all pretentious- a lot due to the friendly staff who are very welcoming and

chatty, making you feel instantly relaxed. The soft lighting and brown paneling on the walls also helps you completely unwind and get into the mood of enjoying fine wines and fabulous food.

Prime cuts of superior quality beef, perfectly aged and then grilled to perfection, are what the Meat Co is known for and this is why there is more emphasis on red meat on the menu hence the name. This venue takes their meat seriously, not in the tiresome way, but in the way of a kitchen that understands that there are things which must be done properly. The selection is varied and the beef burgers in my opinion are the best on the island. If you’re not a red meat eater do not worry as there are plenty of other things on the menu for you to enjoy, such as seafood and chicken. The fish and chips are battered to perfection and just what you’d expect in the UK. Delicious!

There is a great selection of wines and the staff is only too willing to recommend a good bottle to accompany your meal. If

“Variety’s the very spice of life that gives it all its flavour”

Agreat destination for leisure, relaxation and entertainment in Bahrain, Mercure Grand Hotel opens its doors to host the Turkish Food and Dance Festival in association with the

Calkivik promotions and the Organization Union from Istanbul.

Creations of Turkish cuisine by Chef Rıza Gulen from Istanbul

When one talks about the Turkish cuisine, one talks about the totality of foods and beverages which provide nutrition, the way of preparing and preserving them, the techniques, eating manners and the practices and beliefs which are developed around this cuisine.

Turkish cuisine can be simply categorised into grain-based, grilled meat; vegetables that are largely used in the cuisine and majority of the dishes are made in olive oil. That is what makes Turkish food very healthy.

The menu will comprise of Turkey’s

popular dishes like sheesh kebab, Doner kebab, Dolma, roast chicken, lamb tandir, eggplant musakka, Pilaf and desserts like halwa, sutlac and revani.

The customers will get a chance to enjoy a different menu on the buffet each day.

It is like how William Cowper said “Variety’s the very spice of life that gives it all its flavour.”

The Story of the Nation Turkish folk music and dance usually

deals with things of daily life, be it a work song, a story telling ballad, a love song, or a dance song. It can sometimes be a love story or the expression of emotions, used to convey the powerful feelings of the regional people with traditions stretching back for centuries. They owe their rich variety of moves to people who happily improvise while performing in order to show off their skills. In this way, dances are successfully passed on to who may or may not be capable of dancing themselves, especially the young ones.

The festival not only offers gourmets a chance to enjoy authentic Turkish cuisine,

The group has previously performed in different countries around the world including Egypt, Jordan, Johannesburg, Japan, Pakistan, India, Qatar, Dubai and Zambia.

Johnny RocketsSpring into the New

Season with

The Ultimate Hamburger Experienceot confined to any decade, Johnny Rockets combines the best elements from a century of American dining history to create an experience and menu that is relevant today and will be, for decades to come.

The list of goodness keeps getting enticing one after the other. Juicy hamburgers, the special Wagyu burgers, hand- dipped shakes, malts, freshly baked apple pies, delicious breakfast omelettes, pancakes, sweet potato fries; it only gets better. Drop some change into the tabletop jukebox, sing and dance along with the staff to the tunes of Staying Alive, Last Dance, Saturday Night Fever and lots more tunes.

“Johnny Rockets has introduced the Wagyu Rocket Single, Wagyu Houston and Smoke House Wagyu. The three of them come on a special Brioche bun with premium quality meat that just melts in your mouth. We have also introduced the all new sweet potato fries; a little bit of sweetness and crispness to the fries and it’s a perfect side order to a juicy hamburger,” said Dominic Gomes, Multi Unit Manager at Johnny Rocket’s- Global Food Concepts.

If you want to stick to the regulars; as a starter, the Sliders is a must try. It offers a mini hotdog, chili dog. And a mini rocket all in one. For mains, all the spicy food lovers must have the Houston – a hamburger topped with jalapenos and pepper jack cheese. Top it all off with the brand new ‘Deluxe Shakes Menu’. All shakes are made with Johnny Rockets own hand- dipped premium vanilla ice-cream and real powdered malt. That is not it! You can also choose from a selection of flavours including chocolate, banana, strawberry or Oreo cookies.

Johnny Rockets serves a range of breakfast items in the morning for all those who love an American breakfast. There are omelets and pancakes, French toast and your cup of tea or coffee and juices to go with it. How can you say no to all this goodness?!

Enjoy the all-American look and feel, servers who know the secret behind getting ketchup out of the bottle, the

smiley ketchup faces that always leave a nice lasting impression at every table.

The foodies of Bahrain can experience all this at Seef Al-Aali Mall, Lagoon Amwaj Island, and the Juffair branch that is opening soon

…Downtown’s all-new band

4 eekends just got better at Downtown, the Bar Restaurant at Intercontinental Regency in Manama! Why, you ask.

The hotel flew-in their brand new South African band, from Dubai a month back and they’re a hit with guests already. 4 The Music is a five-member band and has been entertaining crowds for six years now.

“Jabu (Thandi Jabulie Magagula) and I started off in 2007,” says PJ (Peter-John Frans), “we did duo-gigs for a year after which my brother, Elton (Elton Shane Frans) joined us. We worked together for four years after that; during that time members came and left until two months back when Dane (Dane Francis) came on-board. Ricardo (Ricardo Dean Petlo) joined us just three weeks back.”

4 The Music performs covers – existing songs. Though they don’t change the original track much, they try to blend their own flavour into every performance. After every gig, the band collects song

requests from guests, so they know what to focus on the next time. “We’re a peoples’ band!” exclaims Dane. They unanimously add that guests in Bahrain are Reggaeton and Latin music fans and that they also love African songs as it’s different for them.

How does 4 The Music strike a balance between music as a passion and a profession? “We approach it as our work,” says PJ. Dane believes that it’s a give and take; “We give our guests what they want but we also educate them with one off songs from our list by adding our own touch to it.”

Each of them agrees that working as a group has helped them grow as individual musicians. “The past few weeks have been challenging,” says Ricardo, “but it’s the best part as I’m growing as a musician and years down the line this experience will have added substance to my musical career.” Dane claims to have learned a lot too.”I’m fine tuning my skills, modifying my background vocals; basically I’m on a journey to discover myself,” he says. Though in the past PJ officially rapped for the band, Dane is the newly discovered

rapper! “We asked him to do a piece and he was really good!” exclaims Jabu. They credit his ability to imitate people easily.

Like any other band, these musicians have their set of differences too, but believe in addressing issues right away and not leaving matters unresolved. “We use a good method called communication,” says Dane.

Talking about future plans, the band shares their dream to make their own music around two years from now. “Our music would definitely have a South African influence because that’s what we do best!” says Jabu

4 The Music plays at Downtown, InterContinental Regency daily from 9pm / except Mondays.Visit their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/pages/4TheMusic/186739754767652
