There are twenty-seven chapters by authors across nationalities including English, Irish, American, Canadian, Pakistani, Indian, Palestinian, Kuwaiti, Australian, Nepalese, Yemeni and German, with a couple contributions from Bahraini writers too! The book is a true testament of what expats think of this tiny island state and the people in it. COMING SOONMumbai Spices

Indian or not, if there is a type of food you must try, that would be the Indian street

food, or how the Indians like to call it, ‘Chaat’. More of a lunch and snack joint,

Mumbai Spices already has a fan base with its Bahrain Mall branch. But what

makes it better is that they are in the process of opening a branch in Adliya.

That just means more chaat, stuffed rotis and masala tea in our tummy.

Opening soon in Adliya.

So every month, the team hits the road for a little bit of exploring. You would be surprised at how many new places have sprung-up in Bahrain. Here is what we discovered for this month!

Portrait of an Artist Painting Her-Self Portrait, by Jean Alphonse Roehn

Bahrain Confidential January 2015

David Hollywood

David Hollywood asks us to ponder upon how we see ourselves and are we really

the person we wish to be viewed as - or are we just a

reflection of an ideal!?

Self Portrait

Behold! in painters hand a heart, A brush of love to image art,

Revealing rendered skills, imparts,Portraits which percept a craft.

Interpret then reflections awe, As stared surprise, glares back at who?

Expressing what the likeness saw,In picture placed opposing you.

That face anew,You’re double drew,

Replaced the fates of both, before!Appearance proved which life was true.

Explanations laminate,In paints preserving acrylate,

Replicated twins conflate,Reflections gaze beyond their fate.

To counter each the lives they’ve shaped.

And artist dwells wherein they lie,Perceiving reasons with his eye,

To show to each, the others reach, Of views depicted in their breach.

What chronicles predict perchanceTo understand expressions glance?

At painted vigoured face, cerise,Complexions canvassed masterpiece.

Are mirrored not by bloods deceit,But pale ambitions incomplete.

The Roman Colosseum from the inside during the day

Roman ColosseumThe largest in the world, the Flavian Amphitheatre

stands in the centre of Rome. The building was used

for entertainment in the early medieval era but later

reused for housing, workshops, as quarters for a

religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian

shrine. Despite the damage by earthquakes and

stone-robbers, the Colosseum is still an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome.

Venice Grand CanalOne of the city’s major water-traffic corridors, it is

said to follow the course of an ancient river. There

are over 170 buildings lining the canal’s banks

including Fondaco houses-building combining the

warehouse and merchant's residence. Enjoy the

view, night or day while you sail on a gondola (a

special Italian boat) or take a vaporetti (Italian water

Sistine Chapel, Vatican CityThe official residence of the Pope (head of the Catholic

church) in the Vatican City, it was originally known

as the Cappella Magna. The Sistine Chapel’s ceiling

was painted by Michelangelo and its various painted

elements form part of a larger scheme of decoration

within the Chapel, including the large fresco, The

Last Judgment on the sanctuary wall. There are also

paintings by other artists of the late 15th century on the ceiling.

Pisa Cathedral

The Piazza dei Miracoli formally known as Piazza del Duomo is

a wide walled area in Tuscany. An important center of European

medieval art, it one of the finest architectural complexes in the

world. The Pisa cathedral is the heart of this area. The church’s

interior is laced with black and white marble and has a gold ceiling

and frescoed dome.Don’t miss the Leaning Tower of Pisa next to

the cathedral!

Florence Cathedral

The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore is the main

church of Florence and one of Italy's largest churches.

Until development of new structural materials in the

modern era, the dome of the cathedral was the largest

in the world and remains the largest brick dome ever

constructed. The church’s interior has gothic influences

and showcases the work of several artists of the time.

The first thing you need to think about is to design your space in a way that is functional whilst being beautiful. Choose pleasant colours, rather than glamorous designs. This ensures a sense of harmony through your home. Finally, consult a professional. You may have a clear vision for your home, but someone with a trained eye and creative mindset can help you

bring your home to life by devising solutions that you may never have imagined. Dream Home Furniture has a wide range of quality and affordable products that will be perfect for your new home.

“Michelle had wrinkles, and her brows had descended with age making her look older than she is and feels. The angles of her mouth were downward and the nasolabial folds, deep. Also, her skin showed evidence of sun damage, and her lower lids showed fat bags and signs of aging. I suggested her, Botox to correct the brows, wrinkles and mouth region as well as a mild neck lift. I also recommended fillers for the upper lip and cheeks.” – Dr Dean Cunha Gomes Dr Dean Cunha Gomes is a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in the Royal Aesthetic Center at the Royal Bahrain Hospital. For your consultation by appointment, call Tel. +973 1724 6857

The Makeover

“Michelle's outfits didn’t seem to enhance her naturally good looks. Most of her clothes had little personality and the colours were too muted. I recommended softer fabrics and colours that blended in with her beauty instead of overpowering it. I also suggested tops which opened up her neckline and beautiful blues and teals that brought the focus to her face and eyes.” – Vusala Hinnant

Vusala Hinnant is a former resident of Bahrain. She recently moved to Baku, Azerbaijan but is still available for fashion and style consultations over email: [email protected]

The Lights Camera Fashion (LCF) and Beauty Fair is set to open the floor to young talents of the fashion industry. Hamra Alam, Co Founder of LCF and a Fashion Designer says, “Our aim is clear and we hope to create more ‘Hamra-preneurs’ and develop our students’ understanding of the rich fashion business that they can be part of as designers.”

What is it about? Many activities are lined-up at the fair including speakers flying in from India to discuss the importanceof the fashion and textile industry, seminars and workshops with making your very own dress.

LCF’s students from Bahrain and Saudi Arabia will be showcasing their work with a fashion show. Students completing the first and second levels of their courses will present their work to fashion savvy buyers who will attend the fair. LCF is delighted to expand their business with fashion bloggers and make-up artists as well. Live make-up will be demonstrated with how to create the perfect look for a night out. Guests can try their hands at drawing, create a dress and allow their imagination to flow during the workshops at the fair, with entertainment and canapés. The event will close with a raffle offering exciting prizes as give-aways.

Talent UnlimitedLCF’s youngest student designer, Lauren Pharren is nine years old and will exhibit her work as well as talk about what she’s been creating over the last few months. Lauren strongly believes that she needs to have a flare in all areas of fashion in order to do well, else it’s pointless. Some of LCF’s senior student designers include Fathima Hussain, an Indian Bahraini; Rasha Fakhro, a Bahraini; Habibi Yakub, an Indian and Alia Mohammed, a Saudi Arabian. “We are celebrating our third anniversary” adds Hamra, "and part of the proceeds from the fair will go towards the rehabilitation Institute of Autism as is tradition. Many schools will be welcome to see the creativity of our students.”

New Year, New Hair

air coloring is a way of life for many people. Although some decide on a change of color for creative reasons, many individuals go under the bottle to cover up gray hair. But hair dye may offer

other benefits than covering up signs of aging. The US Food and Drug Administration estimates that 2 out of 5 women in America dye their hair, while roughly 11 per cent of men dye their hair. Young people are just as likely to dye their hair as older ones, according to research. We tell you why you must go for hair colour this New Year?

H

Shine & Dimension: Putting a subtle color on the hair can create varied hues that pick up and reflect light differently. This can make the hair seem more vibrant and interesting.

More "Pop": Just because a person was born with a specific hair color doesn't mean it is the best complement to his or her skin tone or eye color. Changing one's hair shade can make other attributes stand out more. Eyes may seem more radiant and skin less washed out.

Solution for Thinning Hair: Many men and women eventually lose some of their hair or experience thinning patches. Hair dye can plump hair and create the illusion of more hair. This is a less expensive method to try than hair replacement surgeries or other treatments.

Natural Options: Today, there are hair dyes in many different formulations. For a professional colour support system, try Framesi Color Method. This collection of six products covers all your pre and post-colouring needs to ensure healthy, protected hair with vibrant, longer-lasting colour. The range includes an anti-stain barrier cream, stain remover, skin protector, an ultra violet shampoo and a conditioning colour stabiliser.

Known to crack people up, he attacks (comically, of course) cultural stereotypes of all kinds. Being a huge part of TED, Maz Jobrani emphasises on how it is important to open our eyes, travel the world and see the good in all people.

Something to look forward to: Maz Jobrani’s latest movie, Jimmy Vestvood: Amerikan Hero

You know how everyday you love to add that pop of colour to your outfit? It just seems to brighten up everything and everyone that day. In a similar way, the occasional visit of famous personalities to Bahrain during the last few months of 2014 has definitely left the past year quite memorable and eventful to say the least. Let's take a look at some of the celeb profiles.

‘RON BUMBLEFOOT’ THAL‘Ron Bumblefoot Thal’, lead guitarist for classic rock titans, Guns N’ Roses visited Bahrain as part of a first-of-its-kind venture aimed at encouraging musical talent in the Kingdom and GCC, and further putting them in the spotlight! The rock star attended a guitar clinic at Room 2 Rock in Adliya where he offered in-depth advice on how to set-up guitars, amplifiers and other equipment, before an almost five-hour session of jamming and chatting with the audience. In addition, he visited the RIA Centre, an Adliya institute established in 1999 to cater for children with autism, where he performed in a short concert.

MASSARISari Abboud, well, better known as Massari is a Lebanese Canadian R&B/pop singer who reached stardom by combining Middle Eastern music with the Western culture. There was a time when the song, Real Love was constantly on the radio. Upon the initial success of his songs in early 2005, he signed up with CP records thus becoming one of the most prominent successful performing artists for the record company. One thing is for sure; the ladies went crazy when he performed in December.

DIRE STRAITSPeople lined-up the night after the triathlon in Bahrain to have what many call it, ‘The Dire Straits Experience’. Emerging from the post-punk era, this band is a direct growth of rock. These musicians have performed and also recorded with famous artists like Paul McCartney, Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour, David Bowie, Van Morrison, Ray Charles, Tina Turner, and that’s only some of the names. They became one of the leaders of veteran rock and rollers in the late 80’s.

TROY BAKERIf you are a gaming fan, you

definitely know who Troy Baker is. This handsome

and entertaining American voice actor was at the IGN

Convention, held in October. When he isn’t an actor

and/or voice actor, he is a musician and singer. Starting off in the video industry with Brothers in Arms, he is now

best known for his roles in The Last of Us, Booker

DeWitt, Resident Evil 6, and many more. He had a huge fan base lining-up to hear

and see him.

NADINE KANSODesigner and Founder of jewellery brand, Bil Arabi, Nadine Kanso launched her National Day Special bracelets at Saks

Fifth Avenue. The designs used the phrases ‘My Love’, ‘My Nation’ and ‘Bahrain’. Other bespoke pieces including rings, bracelets and necklaces also wowed fashionistas across the Kingdom. 2014 was eventful; there was considerable reflection as we lost a much loved member of the family; but there were good times too.

Having spent much of the year in Italy, commuting between the UK, Bahrain, and Rome has become almost routine; my wife and I ended 2014 enjoying time with a few friends exploring the history and culture of Rome - which, naturally, included local food markets and cooking.

So what of the coming year? Despite the violence and uncertainty in the world, I remain optimistic that most people seek no more than the peace to lead an ordinary life, and provide for their families.

When I left university I joined the BBC, and assumed I would spend the rest of my working life employed by the same organisation; as the years went by, it became clear that a job for life was a thing of the past. Transitioning into the working culture of today has been difficult for many of my age, but it has opened opportunities that otherwise would have not been possible.

Seemingly conservative, the BBC was an organisation that allowed people to blossom outside their normal role. My engineering career, a combination of radio frequency engineering, complex data analysis, and journalism, was seemingly unusual outside of the broadcasting industry; the role gave me the freedom to explore and apply ideas across the board, not just engineering. Without having had the freedom to explore, I doubt that I would have had the opportunity to report on life in Palestinian refugee camps, or the conflict in Syria, nor would I have been able to make radio documentaries for some of the world’s most reputable broadcasters, nor begun researching and writing on the looming crisis in food and water security - increasingly affecting the whole world.

Of course, sometimes thinking differently can lead to other challenges - many people don’t like to be challenged.

I can’t turn the clock back to a time when the world was seemingly more stable and predictable;

Letter From Bahrain John Ridley reminisces the years gone

my responsibility is to help my son grow into this new world. My wife and I brought him up to be an independent thinker, and to follow his dreams in an uncertain world.

As parents, we are proud of our son’s determination to face the challenges of modern life; he’s set his mind upon a career as a commercial diver, and has worked hard to achieve his dream.

So often the youth of today are criticised for having no vision, blindly following the well-trodden path to university - which leads nowhere; but let’s not blame the young people of today, it’s my generation that has failed them; if only a few more of us could think differently.

Take Charge Of Your Health, Body & LifeEvery choice you make affects your health. That week of binge eating because you had a hard time is going to stretch out to the next week and then before you know it, you have gained 9 kilos, your pants are getting tighter and you feel so lethargic and lazy. So, let’s get that feeling out of your system. We have done the legwork for you. Health tips for a new year and new you. Go ahead and take control!

Page 67: Bahrain Confidential January 2015

health updatesBahrain Confidential January 2015

1. The Goodness of Stretching Maybe it’s time you take what your cats

do seriously. Constantly stretching boosts circulation and digestion and of course eases back pain. Stretch and hold position for at least 20 seconds. While doing this, do not forget to take deep breathes.

2. Smelly is Good You know the smelly food that you do not touch

because you are afraid of body odour - that is what is good for you. Garlic, onions, leeks are all really nutritious. Raw garlic helps fight some serious infections and that’s just one of the benefits. If you’re still apprehensive, get the tablet version.

3. Exercise In The Right Order If you are wondering, the right order is

dumbbells, barbells and machines. The smaller muscles get tired faster. So, progress to machines after as it requires less help from your small muscles.

4. The Right Shoe It’s important to get the right shoe for the type

of workout you do. Shoes that don’t fit or aren’t comfortable will hurt your back, your posture and you never know, even lead to injuries. Buy shoes late in the day. That is when your feet are the largest and make sure that there is half an inch of space in front of your longest toe.

5. Load up on Healthy Food Instead of stuffing your stomach with junk

food, try eating right. Berries are powerful antioxidants that protect you from life-threatening diseases. Hot spicy food triggers endorphins that have a feel good effect after exercising. Unrefined carbohydrates like nuts and bananas give you a boost of energy. Oranges and guavas provide the daily requirement of Vitamin C. Oh and tomato is a superstar!

6. Meditate It seems like something you would pass on.

Some people think they don’t need to meditate

because they have enough of that when they are asleep! But we highly recommend you take 10-20 minutes to unwind. It helps in reducing stress, gives you a better night’s sleep, and improves immunity and lower blood pressure.

7. Drink More Tea Don’t think about it, just do it. Besides from water,

tea is the next best thing for your body. Green tea, especially, fires up your metabolism, lowers blood pressure, aids weight loss, boosts immunity and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent.

8. Look After Yourself Emotionally

It’s called health and wellness for a reason and that includes your emotional and social life. Take time and love yourself. Do things that make you happy and do not neglect your emotional needs.

9. Night Night, Sleep Tight Give your body the rest it needs if you don’t want

to risk a heart attack or maybe even something like psychological problems. You know what they say; at least 7 hours of sleep will do you good.

10. Shade It If it’s sunny outside, wear sunglasses and not

just any sunglasses. Pick ones with 99-100 percent UV absorption or UV 400. This will guard you against cataracts, and even skin cancer. Also, the bigger your glasses are, the better the protection is.

Big Deal is a group buying website that posts the best discounted deals on Bahrain’s favourite outlets ranging from products, services, health and lifestyle to travel and events.

For businesses in the Kingdom, it offers an exciting new way to market their products and get free online advertising and for consumers it puts the power of numbers in your hands. Because once a desired product is offered with a “big deal” all you have to do as an interested consumer is get your friends, family and everyone you possibly can, interested in the Big Deal and it’s yours! Not only do you get a product, service, trip or event - you get it at the price you want!

How Big Deal works for businesses? What Big Deal needs is for the merchant to set the minimum target that he would need to generate from the deal. Then Big Deal, posts the offer on their website for free. The company has a database of active consumers, and if the merchant has an existing database, Big Deal can tap into that too.

The email advertisement then goes out to hundreds of customers who are reached through both the Big Deal website and their email addresses - if they’ve registered with Big Deal- as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

In addition, the customers are motivated to promote the deal to their friends. So there’s a huge knock-on effect and the customer has a hand in being part of the activation of the deal, to make sure the deal reaches its minimum number of people. Users tell their friends using Facebook, Twitter, email or phone. Until Big Deal reaches the target the merchant sets, the deal will not go live.

If the target that the merchant has set is achieved - the deal will go live! That means that consumers that have signed on for the deal will get the coupon automatically sent to their inbox which they can print and use like cash.

If the stipulated minimum isn’t reached then the deal doesn’t go live. The only down side to that is that there’s no change to the merchant’s status. The up side is that even if the deal doesn’t go through the merchant will not be charged.

Using Big Deal is secure and easy for customers too!Shopaholics can rejoice! Right on their computers, they know where the best deals

are on offer! That’s because all users have to do is check out the Big Deal website every day to see the latest Big Deals or subscribe to a Bargain Alert and they get the deals emailed to them every morning. What’s more payment is made through the safe, secure, highly encrypted Credimax payment gateway.

When a Big Deal goes live, in other words, when enough people have joined to activate the deal, Big Deal sends them a coupon that they can print and use like cash.

On the one hand it guarantees the best offer for the people of Bahrain to enjoy and on the other hand it guarantees footfall and revenue for the member establishment.

What Big Deal offers is a bridge between the retailer and potential customers.

It’s truly a win-win case. The merchant now has another very lively channel of highly focused, targeted advertising – for which he pays nothing unless it results in sales. Which other medium offers him this? That’s why it’s called a Big Deal.

he Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) has a decade of experience offering courses in medicine, nursing and postgraduate studies. RCSI Bahrain is a constituent university of the

Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RSCI), which was established in 1784. Like its Irish counterpart, the role of RCSI Bahrain is to deliver healthcare education to the highest international standards.

The medical curriculum, which recently received accreditation by the Irish Medical Council, is delivered in a six-year programme, comprising Foundation Year and three Cycles (Junior, Intermediate and Senior Cycle). The University also has a five-year programme for suitably-qualified students. The curriculum is the same as the one delivered in RCSI Dublin. Students at both universities sit the same examinations, often at the same time, and the same external examiners are often used for both campuses.

Throughout the first decade of RCSI Bahrain, results of the penultimate final examinations in Senior Cycle indicate that its students perform as well as their counterparts in RCSI Dublin. RCSI Bahrain's undergraduate programme has an excellent staff/student ratio, especially in the important hospital-based, clinical years.

Medical graduates are awarded the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, and Bachelor of the Art of Obstetrics (MB BCh BAO) of both the National University of Ireland and of RCSI Bahrain. In addition, they receive the Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (LRCSI) and the Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (LRCPI). The School of Nursing offers the BSc Nursing (Hons) undergraduate which is a four-year programme open to school leavers. The BSc (Hons) Bridging

programme enables nurses who have an existing diploma level qualification to upgrade to a degree in nursing. The two-year MSc in Nursing programme is for graduate nurses.

Admissions for courses commencing September 2015 are now open. Entry to the programmes is dependent on academic grades and qualifications, performance at a structured interview, recommendation letter(s) from school/university, and English language ability.

Tell us the Tails Bahrain tale, how did it all begin?Tails Bahrain started in 2010 specialising in the production of Natural, pet food for consumers who were looking to move away from the highly processed and adulterated ones. One of my own dogs was sensitive to nearly every type of pet food which inspired the start-up. We now also offer free pet advice through our hotline and have a state-of-the-art Veterinary Centre headed by Dr Ahmed A Azeim.

What is your range of services? We offer everything from basic consultation, vaccines, skin cytology, ultrasound, dental scaling and extractions to general surgery, blood tests and many more procedures and medical services which are of the highest quality and reasonably priced. Natural, our pet food brand includes recipes ranging from chicken and rice for dogs, and all types of meat and grain-free food for cats.

Any rescue stories Tails Bahrain is proud of?We have had quite a few rescue stories as 30 per cent of our work is for one of the local shelters. However, our most memorable case was Garett the dog, who came in with a severely embedded collar. It seems he had the collar fitted on him as a puppy and then was released to fend for himself. As he grew, the collar tightened and started to embed itself in his neck which got infected. Duaa Al Alawi brought Garett in to the centre and rescued him from a definite sad end.

What do you think our readers can do to help the situation of animals in Bahrain? The best approach is to educate. Most people who abuse animals need help themselves. Either they don’t know better, or can’t care less. All we have to do is give them a reason to love and care. Always be ready to educate and let them see the other side. It’s the only way.

Tails BahrainMost people who abuse animals need help themselves, says Ahmed Yousif Ahmed, Co Founder & CEO

Do you have pets?Yes, I do. I currently have Jasmine, a Chow Chow mix who is my only pet. As much as I would love to have more, I don't have the time.

Dainty little bites of dim sum. Steaming Peking Duck. Heaps of Chow Mein. These are some of the delicacies that spring to mind when one thinks about dining in Hong Kong.

Sure enough, Cantonese cuisine dominates the metropolis’ palate. But its history as a British colony and its ever-growing expat population ensures that Hong Kong’s dining options reflect its cultural diversity. From fine

dining establishments in four and five-star hotels that boast Michelin stars, to independent establishments and from the neighborhoods of Tsim Tsa Tsui to Causeway Bay to Wan Chai, the multicultural medley that flavors the

rest of the city’s moods can also be found in its dizzying range of restaurants. The array of choices can be daunting for a short term visitor, so I narrowed down some suggestions that no

discerning diner should leave the city without sampling. Here is my pick of must-try Hong Kong specialties.

Ujala Ali Khan explores Cantonese cuisine.

“Forget Peking Duck, try charcoal barbecued goose instead. With crispy skin and tender meat, this dish is served with plum sauce like its more traditional cousin and is even available in travel-friendly packaging to take home as a souvenir!”

2. Steamed fishA Hong Kong staple, steamed fish is typically lightly seasoned with Cantonese ingredients such as ginger, mushrooms, dried fruit peel and shallot, allowing the original flavor of the fish to shine through. The Steamed Fresh Red Spotted Garoupa with Mushroom & Pork at Jumbo Kingdom is a winner.

Jumbo Kingdom , Shum Wan Pier Drive, Wong Chuk Hang, AberdeenTel: +852 2553 9111

3. Barbecued gooseForget Peking Duck, try charcoal barbecued goose instead. With crispy skin and tender meat, this dish is served with plum sauce like its more traditional cousin and is even available in travel-friendly packaging to take home as a souvenir! I recommend the Golden Roasted Goose at Yung Kee Restaurant.

Yung Kee Restaurant, 32-40 Wellington Street, CentralTel: +852 2522 1624

5. Sampan-Style CrabA Hong Kong classic, ‘sampan’ is freshly caught seafood traditionally served on small boats. Now also available in fine-dining restaurants, sampan-style seafood is strongly seasoned and features plenty of chilli, ginger and garlic. The Deep Fried Crab with Chili and Garlic at Jumbo Kingdom is a great place to sample this classic Hong Kong fare.

Jumbo Kingdom, Shum Wan Pier Drive, Wong Chuk Hang, Aberdeen, Hong Kong IslandTel: +852 2553 9111

4. Baked SeafoodOnce you’ve covered barbecued, baked or roasted poultry, it’s time to move on to seafood. hose who visit London frequently are aware of how multicultural and vibrant the city is and that it offers a string of varied cuisines including Arabic which has been leading the U.K.'s

mainstream restaurant market. Koshari Street, one of London’s major Egyptian restaurants has recently hit London's food market, offering unique authentic cuisine. Sherif El Toukhy, the Director of Koshari Street was born and raised in Cairo and successfully managed to complete his education in Political Science and International Relations in Vienna and Cairo. Professionally speaking, Sherif is a banker with over 22 years of experience in corporate, investment and private banking. He has worked for numerous leading multinational

Bringing a taste ofEgypt to LondonKoshari Street is home to fine, authentic Egyptian food and the only restaurant in London serving it. Rabi’ah.M speaks to Sherif El Toukhy, the Director who talks about its first anniversary and success, and the challenges of running an Egyptian restaurant in the heart of London.

and regional institutions including Barclays Bank, BNP Paribas, National Bank of Abu Dhabi, Mashreq Bank & Citibank. It was through these exciting experiences that he landed up with the Koshari Street Group where he is part of the management team based in London.

The Koshari Street concept was conceived by two key founders, Karim Shousha and Salah Khalil. "Both of them have been involved in diversified business activities which range from industry to trade and services," says Sherif explaining how he got together with the seasoned Egyptian entrepreneurs. "I joined Koshari Street as a non-executive shareholder during the initial pre-operational phase.”

Sherif goes on to talk about the minds behind Koshari Street. “Our team consists of Khalil, Salah, Anissa El Helou and me. Salah being a London resident has been involved in numerous other kinds of green field projects in the U.K.. Salah undertook the implementation of the idea into what we see today as “Koshari Street". My role was providing the seed capital along with feasibility studies. Anissa is our concept chef and shareholder, and can be labelled as the key propeller of this project. She has an important role to play since she is responsible

for creating the exciting recipes and menu, ensuring quality standards are maintained, and training our chefs and their assistants."

Koshari Street is inspired by London's cosmopolitan nature - it is the cosmopolitan capital of the world - and the influx of Arabs and Middle Easterners to the city. The name Koshari Street stems from ‘Koshari’ being the main recipe, whereas ‘Street’ symbolises the key concept of offering street food.

What makes Koshari exceptional are its recipes and ingredients which are typical to the Egyptian Koshari dish. The highest quality ingredients are used. Sherif points out, “Anissa's expertise along with the professionalism of our chefs and their assistants makes our food different and delicious.”

Koshari has gained a very positive feedback from the customers, community and media in London, in such a short span of time since it was set up. While its success is still new, Koshari is faced with three major challenges, Sherif explains: “The first is bringing a new product to the U.K. market especially since Egyptian cuisine is not recognised except by the Egyptian and Arab

community. Secondly, the competitiveness and diversity of the London's food market and finally, the relatively high fixed costs especially with regards to rents and salaries.”

Koshari Street is the only authentic Arab restaurant in London and there are three success factors supporting this; focus and specialisation, healthy eating- the food served is purely vegetarian and lastly the shop's concept and branding.

In essence, Koshari Street has been a success story and Sherif seems very content with its achievement as the restaurant has performed very well in terms of brand recognition and awareness.

ucina Italiana’s popular amateur cooking competition came to an end after 5 weeks of pure fun and flavour! 36

contestants displayed their culinary skills over six qualifiers, two semi-finals and the final round. Right from the elimination round’s Main Course Challenge to the testing, Chef’s “Taste It Then Make It” task, each contestant exhibited great potential in the kitchen.

The Final RoundThe final four created a three-course Italian meal in only 90 minutes. Each finalist cooked a starter, main-course and dessert which were then critiqued by the judges – Chef Yousef from Bahrain TV who is arguably Bahrain’s only TV celebrity chef; Marie Claire who hosts on Bahrain Radio; a blogger and self-confessed foodie; and Peter Lyons, the Group General Manager of Cucina Italiana’s parent company. Having 20 years of experience in the hospitality sector and known to be more than a little sarcastic with his opinions, Peter hosted the final evening of the ‘cook-off’, entertaining guests and keeping them on the edge. The judges presented their views of the finalists’ dishes as well.

The WinnersKevin J Deneeke, 42 years and from the USA wowed the judges with his culinary skills, determination and focus. He walked away with some amazing prizes including a return flight to Italy and having one of his winning dishes featured on Cucina Italiana’s 2015 menu. The 1st Runner Up was Geraldine Miller, a 35-year old French lady, the 2nd Runner Up was Ahmed Daghlas, a 31-year old Jordanian and the 3rd Runner Up was Amani Al Alawi, a 26-year old Bahraini.

interviewBahrain Confidential January 2015

You’ve had an incredible year in 2014. What has been your ‘2014 moment’ ? 2014 has been an outrageous year for me in the most positive way. I’d say the craziest moment this year was to play before Daft Punk’s unannounced surprise gig at Ushuaia Ibiza. I had no clue they were performing, so as I walked off the stage and I suddenly realised what was going on. That was pretty crazy.

You have become a quite a regular visitor to Ibiza. Tell us what the island means to you and what it is about Ibiza that continues to lure you back?Ibiza is a magic place. I’ve been going since 1999 and for some reason, I keep returning every year. A lot has been said about the club scene and the hippy heritage, but I think the reason why I come back is the nature. I love traveling up north on the island just to enjoy the scenery. There is something relaxing and soothing about the island, it feels like it has its own timezone, and the best way to experience its magic is just to let go. The island will lead you to the most magical moments if you just let it.

Who has been the strongest influence in your career and why? Most definitely my father. He was a guitarist and never really had a chance to live out his dream of becoming a full time musician. Given his instrumental background, he actually really had a hard time understanding my music. He always encouraged me to study instead.

Kölsch Gets Exclusive By Jenny Thomas

‘I’m just lucky that my music finds its way through to many people’s hearts.’Quite a down to earth music artist for a famous techno man that he is. Introducing to you all, Rune Reilly Kölsch or who we better know as Kölsch. He has sold millions of records all over the world and has created a niche for himself for making music in what I would like to all it, ‘All Sorts of Epic’. Now out with his latest album, Kölsch talks about compiling the music for his new release, his 2014 moments, Ibiza, his journey, and a whole lot more.

Maria Sorger talks about Bahrain’s cultural gems – its traditional, small time cafés and restaurants.

Instead, this gave me willpower to pursue my dreams and succeed. He sadly passed away before he could experience what I achieved but the power of the generation gap and his teasing made me do it. I know he would have been so proud.

Tell us about your journey so far in the music industry. Your music has successfully reached out to many people across the world, did you foresee this? When I started making electronic music around 1993, no one understood it. It was what some would call it ‘The Heyday of Grunge’, and my music was seen as annoying and too simple.

I was always driven by a feeling that this music was what I needed to do and I never thought in a million years I would achieve what I have over the years. It’s

Page 123: Bahrain Confidential January 2015

121

interviewBahrain Confidential January 2015

been such a fantastic journey so far and I can’t express how thankful I am to make a living off something I love so much. I’m just lucky that my music finds its way through to many people’s hearts. If it wasn’t for them, I’d not be here.

You are a renowned DJ with a busy international touring schedule. Are there any new or old tracks that strikes all right chords for you? There are so many beautiful songs that touched me over the years and I’ve been in love with them every decade. If I was to pick something recent that I absolutely fell in love with, it would be ‘Every Heartbeat’ by Robyn. The song is a perfect, desperate love song.

What’s the story behind your new Balance Presents Kölsch album? With so much good music out there, putting these types of albums together is never easy. Did you struggle to come to a final tracklisting for the mix?I must admit, it was not a struggle. Quite the contrary. I wanted the mix to be a perfect representation of what my DJ sets are about. It needed something old, something new, something groovy and something melodic. I’m a complete melancholic, so I wanted the mix to work as a journey you could indulge in on the go. I’ve tested it on planes, cars and there is nothing better than nice music to travel with.

One of the standout tracks on the Balance Presents mix is your album exclusive track ‘Punchbuggy’. How has the feedback been so far?I tested the track out all season in Ibiza, that’s when I knew it worked. Since then it has gotten its own life. People seem to embrace it and a lot of DJs are catching on to it.

Finally Kölsch, what is next in store for you in 2015?I am currently working on my new album. It’s a long process, but I’m really enjoying some studio time, after a year of hardcore touring. The new album will be out summer 2015 and it’s taking form nicely. With the album I’m exploring early defining moments in my life. My recent single ‘Cassiopeia’ was a reference to the turtle from Michael Endes book MOMO, which had a huge impact on my understating of time.

lifestyleBahrain Confidential January 2015

I recently visited Turkey; lovely place, friendly people and amazing food. Of the many cities we stayed at, I officially declare Fethiye as my favourite. Why you ask? Well, it offers a balanced, comfortable lifestyle as I learned from my conversations with the locals. The highlight of my stay here was my debut scuba diving stint!

The morning we boarded that ferry to the middle of sea, I felt sick. No, it wasn’t sea sickness but the thought of going eight feet underwater! A short training later, the adventure began.

As we went deeper down, everything suddenly seemed to slow down and it became so peaceful. It’s natural for you to become focused on every breath you take which makes you feel completely alive to yourself, others and life. I learned that day how to live in the moment. Another lesson was trusting people – many a time our bad experiences make it difficult. When you’re scuba diving you’re placing your life in the hands of people who know better. If they tell you to do something, you do it without using your own rational thoughts, you blindly follow. It makes you dare to trust someone apart from yourself.

Who would have thought a fun diving experience could be so powerful! It’s something you must try at least once in your life.

Things to knowTaxisTaxis are easily available in the capital, Manama, and have meters but be sure to make the driver use the meter. 99% of drivers won’t switch on the meter and will try to charge you double the legal fare. Beware!

Confidential Tip: BD1 per five minutes in the cab is the most you should pay for an un-metered journey. If traveling from the airport or busy taxi rank, add BD2/after midnight add BD1 to the total e.g. a 10 minute drive from the airport after midnight should cost you no more than BD5 (BD2 + BD2 + BD1= BD5). Taxis do use meters and companies may use similar rates.

Avoiding OffenceGenerally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.
