ThesisterofthedetainedMsZahraAl-SheikhhascauseduproaraftershehadrevealedthatapolicewomanforcedZahratotakeoffherclothesandfilmedhernakedbyhermobile.ShesaidtheofficerIsaAl-Majalibeather,tookoffherheadcover,abusedherverbally,andforcedhertoconfessoffalsecharges.

RiotpolicebrutallyassaultedZahra(21yearsold)beforearrestingheraftershehadbeencaughtfilminganattackontheprotestersonFriday.ShewasdetainedinBudaiyaPoliceStationuntiltakentothePublicProsecutionafterachargeofassaultingpolicemenhadbeenfabricatedagainsther.

HerfamilywasdeniedseeingherbeforebeingtakentothePublicProsecution.Hersistersaidshewastransportedtohospitalafterthebeatingsshehadgonethrough.

ZahraphoneherfamilyfromthePoliceStationandtoldthemwhatshehadsuffered.Hersisterreportedthatalargegroupoftheregimemercenariessurroundedherandbeatherbrutallyontheheadandback.ThenOfficerIsaAl-Majaliinterrogatedherwhobeatherandtookoffherheadcover,abusedherverbally,andforcedhertoconfessoffalsecharges.

Theyoungwomanwasputinjailwithotherwomenaccusedofprostitutionandothersimilarcrimes.HersistersaidthatZahraphonedcryingandaskedforhelp.

ThePublicProsecutiondecidedtoreleaseZahraonbailofBHD50,however,herfamilywaskickedoutofthePoliceStationaftertheyarrivedtotakeher.ThefamilywastoldthatthejudgerevokedhisdecisionclaimingitwaswrongandZahramustbedetainedforaweek.HerlawyercontactedtheProsecutorGeneralwhoclaimedthathehadrevokedZahrasreleasedecisionafteravideofootagehadbeencirculatedthatprovedsheassaultedpolicemen.

Later,hersistercauseduproar,aftersherevealedthatapolicewomanforcedZahratotakeoffherclothesindetentionandfilmedherbyhermobilephone.ThepolicewomanthenwenttoZahraandsaidtoherthatshedeletedthevideosayin

gshedidthatjokingly.

ZahrassisterexplainedthatthepolicewomantookZahraaswellasaPilipinowomaninmateintoaroom,sheinstructedthemtotakeofftheirclothes.Zahrarefused,however,thepolicewomanforcedher.ThepolicewomanstartedtobeatthePilipinowomanwhileshewasnaked.Shestressedthatshewasnotabletorecognizethatpolicewomenremovedtheirbadgesthathadtheirnames,toavoidsuingthemfortheiruglyacts.

ZahraAl-SheikhisastudentintheCollegeofMedia&Communication.LastSunday17June2012shewassupposedtositforoneofherfinalexams.Shewasstudyingforherexamswhileshewasinjail,nonetheless,shewasnotallowedtositfortheexam.Zahracomplainedofmistreatmentandbadfood.ThePoliceStation

refusedtotaketheclothesthatherfamilyhadsenttoher.

Zahrassistercommented:Inthestateoflaw,institutions,andfreedom,menandwomenarearrested,beaten,andtheirprivacyisviolated,allofthathappenshereinBahrain.Sheadded:onlythosewhohadbeeninprisonwouldappreciateitsordealandbitterness.

Thetweepsontwitterwrotemuchabouttheyoungladysstorywhichisoneofalonglistofheinousassaultsonwomenbythepolicesincetheimplementationofthemartiallawon15March2011.Bassiounisreportlistedsomeofthoseviolations.

SomeactiviststranslatedthetweetsofZahrassistertoEnglishandFrench,whileotherscampaignedagainsttheJordaniantorturerIsaAl-Majali.AJordanianactiviststweeted:Suchtorturersputustoshame,andallhonourablepeopleinJordancondemnMajalisbehaviour.

WefaqsaidZahrasarrestcomesdespiteallthecallsthattheInternationalcommunityraisedtoevacuateprisonsofprisonersofopinion,whiletheauthoritiescontinuetoarrestwomenandleavetheminprisonincasesthatarerelatedtofreedomofexpressionandrighttoprotest.
