Have you ever surprised yoursquore friends Itrsquos a pretty fun exciting feeling My good friend Tsedeq was about to have his 22nd birthday when I got a message from his girlfriend Tori that she wanted to surprise him with a trip to Burnside with all his friends So we kept it under wrap got a crew together met for a breakfast for Tsedeqrsquos bday and hit him with the surprise Get in the car and go

Our original plan was to make the 18 hour treck from FTC to Hood River Oregon but we caught wind of rain storms ruining the chances of skating in Oregon that day So we shacked up in Boise had an epic shitty breakfast at Dennyrsquos and got hooked up with Blake to skate his super fun bowl Thanks again Blake for the hospitality We arrived in Hood River that night met with Joey the Unheard rep and got a well needed nights sleep Woke up with a fullpipe for breakfast a super weird one at that

Only a short drive over the Columbia River from Hood River is the small little town of Bingen Washington Dreamland built 2 phases on this park making it a very fun park for everyone

Hood River has to be one of my all time favorites therersquos just something about flying through the trees carving doors snapping over bridges and water streams that puts a smile on my face

We made the drive to Portland that night only to be greeted by a handful of old FTC friends and a nice warm session at the New Adidas Village Private Park a bunch of fun things set up in a parking garage will never fail Thanks Kyle and Cory for hooking up the fun times

The cold and wind wasnacutet letting up so Nick Peterson got us into the Department of Skateboarding Thanks Nick this kid kills so be on the lookout for him in the new Bacon Video dropping soon

We woke up the next day to start the treck home where it was negative 10 degrees and snowing Made a mandatory stop at Multnomah Falls Then it was onto our last skate destination in Irrigon Oregon

We got to Irrigon had a fun warm session and then began the cold treck home The shittybreakfasttour was an example of how you can surprise your friend with something he will remember for the rest of his life HUGE thanks to Tori for arranging this whole trip driving and dealing with all of us And a Huge thanks to Blake Joey Nick Cory Kyle Josh Maddison Mudgett and anyone else who had to deal with us

Okay herersquos what I think about backyarders particularly in the Denver area First of all the obvious advantage of backyarders is that they are a great escape from the crowded skateparks no scooters to dodge and no random yoo-hoos beaming ya Often they have more shade and tasty beverages to cool down or heat up the best of sessions Secondly places with alive and thriving backyarders often indicate skateboarding has a strong presence which just so happens in this pocket of the central Rocky Mountains Denver is fortunate like that

Someone once asked me ldquothere are so many perfect parks why would anyone build their own hererdquo Well I didnrsquot know what to say because as skateboarders therersquos never enoughis there The thing about backyard bowls and ramps is that they are unique and a part of the person who created it Sharing a backyard creation derived from individualism and heart is the absolute best feeling in skateboarding I think we can all agree on that Next time you are in a backyard skating someonersquos ramp or bowl be sure to give them a high five and thank you (and always bring beer) Yeah
