This presentation is a training guide for the use of Baits in an initial cleanout of a structure. Once the structure has been completely treated, monthly treatments should not be necessary but regular inspections are recommended. If signs of infestation reappear during the inspections, treat only the affected areas. In most instances, retreatment of the entire structure should not be necessary until the annual renewal date.

Service Business Solutions recommends the use of this presentation as a training program for service technicians, sales personnel, and office personnel. It is also recommended for use as a sales tool, when making a presentation to a potential client.

Baiting for cockroaches is one of the most effective control methods and in this program you should learn:

Advantages of Baiting

1. Long residual action as a control agent

2. Exact placement of the control agent in the target environment

3. Little or no “mess” when making applications

4. Simplicity of the application process

5. Little specialized equipment required

6. Increasing number of products to select from

7. Economical over the period of control

Baiting offers many benefits to both the PCO and the Client. Only with the development of good commercially available baits has the art of baiting emerged as a primary Integrated Pest Management (IPM) tool. Some advantages of baiting are:

Page 5: Baiting Cockroaches Chapter 7 Section II – General Pest Control Basics of the Pest Bear & Affiliates Service Personnel Development Program 2005 Copyright

The residual action of a bait is one of the most important characteristics of baiting. Placement of small amounts of bait in a large number of areas and having the bait remain accessible and attractive to the target pest gives a baiting program a much greater chance of success.

Placement of bait requires the PCO to inspect the facility rather than “broadcast spraying”. Inspection is the cornerstone of any IPM program, so baiting will enhance the effectiveness of an IPM approach to pest control.

Placement of bait reduces the “mess” created during the performance of the service and leaves a much better impression on the client while being much more thorough with the application.

Applying bait is easy, if : you make a thorough inspection, apply them in a uniform manner, and you make a thorough treatment.

Equipment used for baiting may be as simple as a spatula or, most likely, will include a bait application gun.

It is sometimes helpful to have a step ladder or stool for applying bait in high, hard to reach, places.

A good flashlight is critical for the success of a baiting program. A small, but durable, light is better than a big bulky light and using the light both prior to and during application is important.

Page 7: Baiting Cockroaches Chapter 7 Section II – General Pest Control Basics of the Pest Bear & Affiliates Service Personnel Development Program 2005 Copyright

The “Bait Gun” from Specialty Products is a plunger type gun, with multiple dose selection. It can be used with conventional bait tubes and tips, and has options, such as a flashlight holder.

The “Bate Mate” from Bate Mate is a multiple dose applicator.

It can be adjusted to five levels of application and utilizes the conventional tubes.

With the increased popularity of baiting as a major IPM control procedure more products are becoming available. It is very important that baits are used in accordance with their label. They are pesticides and must be handled accordingly.

“It is a violation of FIFRA to use a product in a manner inconsistent with the Label.”

When properly applied, baiting can be more economical than conventional pesticide applications because:

smaller amounts are applied

products have a longer residual

products are less likely to be removed or altered

Disadvantages of Baiting

1. Baiting takes more time than “spraying”, when properly done

2. Cost of initial baiting is higher in time and materials

3. Control through baiting may take longer to achieve

4. There is no “quick kill” in a baiting program

5. Baiting requires a commitment from Management

6. Baiting requires training or retraining Technicians

7. Baiting requires education of Clients

Nothing is perfect, and there are some disadvantages to baiting. However, the advantages far out weigh the disadvantages. Some of the disadvantages which PCOs and their Clients need to be aware of are:

The initial baiting service may take longer than a conventional treatment, but the overall time devoted to actual treatment during a contractual year will probably be about the same. The reason for this is the extra time spent in making a thorough inspection and actually applying the bait.

Baits generally will cost more for the initial service than a conventional treatment, but the annual cost will probably be less.

Baiting does not give the “quick kill” normally encountered with spraying. This can be a disadvantage if the client is expecting a large kill, immediately. The long term effectiveness far outweighs this disadvantage.

Page 13: Baiting Cockroaches Chapter 7 Section II – General Pest Control Basics of the Pest Bear & Affiliates Service Personnel Development Program 2005 Copyright

The length of time necessary to gain control with baits is going to be directly related to the thoroughness of the application, product selection, and total population. “consider vacuuming as many of the pests as possible prior to baiting to increase the speed of control.”

To be successful, the PCO must be committed to IPM and baiting as a control tool. A total commitment to baiting must be made and adhered to if the concept is to become the basis of a general control program.

It is very important for the Client to be educated about baits and baiting. A knowledgeable Client will support an IPM program, and lack of education will not add to the success of a baiting program.

Successful Baiting

1. Make a thorough inspection - EVERY TIMEA. check cracks & crevices, above & below, and inside & behind

2. Use a flashlight when inspecting and treating3. Remove evidence of infestation4. Establish a regular schedule for inspection5. Replace eaten or old baits6. Do Not use conventional pesticides in areas where you are

baiting7. Note unsanitary conditions8. Require correction of mechanical deficiencies9. Notify the Client of current conditions and findings

Successful baiting requires adaptation to a true IPM approach. An initial or continuous baiting program should include the following steps:

There are several very good baits currently available for use by PCOs. These products have Labels and MSDS Sheets like any other pesticide and should be used accordingly. Not all the commercially available baits are presented in this program but the following baits have been evaluated and found to be effective control agents:

These products are available from your distributor or directly from the manufacturer. If you have not used used these products, ask your distributor for a sample and additional information about the product.

Remember

The continuous evolution of improved pest control and IPM techniques has led to the advances we currently see in the area of baiting and commercially available baits.

Baiting provides an efficient and cost productive means of cockroach control.

Baiting for cockroaches is modern, effective and supports the concepts of IPM.

It is highly recommended that you learn as much as possible about baiting and baits, and consider including it in your arsenal of control procedures.
