spring
By CSUB Music Department,Bakotopia.com contributor
There is no denying
that Bakersfield
loves jazz music in
the springtime. If you need
proof, then it's time to mark
your calendar for the 23rd
Annual Bakersfield Jazz
Festival, May 8 and 9 at
the CSUB Amphitheater.
The wonderful two-day
celebration has been called
Bakersfield's "Rite of
Spring," “Laid Back Party of
the Year,” among other
things. Whatever you wanna
call it, it's the place you
wanna be for some hot jazz
music, jammin' food, cool
drinks, and a gathering of
the Bako's coolest cats.
This year's festival is
brought to you by the CSUB
Music Department and
BMW of Bakersfield. All pro-
ceeds from this event go
toward student scholar-
ships. Last year over
$32,000 was awarded to
54 deserving students in
eight academic disciplines
in addition to music, and
over the years the festival
has created a scholarship
endowment of over
$80,000 from the pro-
ceeds.

THE BAKERSFIELD
Let's check out day one…As gates open on festival
grounds at 6 pm on Friday, May 8,festival goers will enter to the funof Foster Campbell and Friends.Throughout the festival, music willbe heard on the Golden West Casi-no Stage near the entrance and inthe vendor area after each groupfinishes on the main stage.
At 7 pm on the main stage, theextraordinary heart and groove ofBakersfield saxophonist DarrenGholston gets that vibe going.
Next up is Kyle Eastwood son ofmovie icon Clint Eastwood. DaddyClint taught him to play left handbass on the piano, and the bass inall its shapes became his life'sfocus. In addition to hit jazzalbums, Kyle composed music forthe Academy Award winning films,“Mystic River” and “Million DollarBaby” as well as Eastwood's“Flags of Our Fathers” and “Lettersfrom Iwo Jima.”
The evening concludes with theunveiling of Grammy winner BobMintzer's west coast version of theBob Mintzer Big Band in their pre-miere performance. The best jazzplayers from San Diego to SanFrancisco are lining up to join thislegendary big band composer andgifted saxophonist with the Yellow-jackets for this performance.
What's about day two?The music begins at 1 pm on
Saturday with the music of EzekielVictor playing on the entrancestage when the festival gatesopen. Later in the day at 6pm, thefunky Latin ska sounds of MentoBuru will keep the party cookin' onthe stage near our vendor area, where a variety of food vendorsserving everything from hamburg-ers to deep-pit barbeque, Cajundelights, and sweets. Of course, the cold Beer and wine will servedon-site - NO outside alcoholallowed, daddy-o!
However, many will bring theircoolers with food and soft drinksonto the festival grounds andspread their blankets and lay claimto their turf for a day of jazz on the
green. Bring sunscreen! No onecan predict weather, but be pre-pared. Also, know that all childrenunder 12 are free, and the kidsseem to love the wide-open (butfenced) spaces. Check out thejewelry, painting, ceramics, andphotography in the artists pavilionarea.
The main stage comes alive at 2pm with the Kern County HonorJazz Band, the Bakersfield JazzWorkshop Orchestra, and theCSUB Jazz Singers under the direc-tion of Peggy Sears providing therich harmonies and fun of the bestin vocal jazz.
The afternoon should heat up toa fever pitch with Australian drum-mer/composer Tim Davies and hisbig band. Davies has worked onhundreds of projects from arrang-ing music for Jamie Cullum to con-ducting the score for video game“God of War 2”, TV's “PushingDaisies,” and albums for NatalieCole, and Michael Buble
Next, we move from big band tobluegrass and the banjo of AlisonBrown. Her jazz-hued acousticmusic never abandons its blue-grass roots.
Brian Bromberg takes the stagenext. Bromberg's all-star group is
certain to astound and please thefestival audience and will lead tothe spectacular close-proximity fire-works.
With the audience slightlyaghast from the pryrotechnics, thefestival stage will explode with theenergy of Cecilia Noel and theWild Clams. A child star on Peru-vian television, she studied musicat top schools in Argentina andGermany before returning to Peruto sing with a big band. After mov-ing to LA, Noel formed the 14-pieceband Wild Clams and brought it alltogether. The high voltage perform-ance of the “Queen of Soul Salsa”is sure to bring the audience totheir feet to close the festival. Thisgroup is hot, hot, hot! Spring hascome to Bakersfield, and the jazzfestival knows it's time to cele-brate.

New show at The Basement poses many questions about the validity of art - opening May 8!
By Jen Raven, Bakotopia.com contributor
W hat is a picture worth toyou? For some, less ismore; but for others, one
thousand words may barely scratchthe surface.
It’s an interesting concept to playwith, and local author/poet GinnWilliams is eager to expand on theidea ... as she also expands her ownartistic horizons.
“A picture worth one thousandwords would convey everything Iwanted to say, in exactly the way Iwanted to say it,” said Williams.“Painting is such a different form ofcommunication, compared to thewritten word; I’m trying to branch offinto visual art, to learn to conveyideas and emotions without relyingso much on words. She is especially excited about theupcoming “One Thousand Words”group arts exhibit, coming to TheBasement Gallery, 1532 19th St. -opening Friday, May 8, at 7 pm.There will be live entertainment, andjust $7 gets you in the door. Ginnintends to challenge herself (anddelight the rest of us) with her newfunctional art series, “CouplesCups.” These over-sized ceramicmugs will come in pairs, and feature“disturbing messages on the out-sides, but sweet messages on theinsides,” concerning the ups anddowns of romantic relationships. Thisshow will be Williams’ personal visualarts debut.
“When I write, it’s like I’m notpresent for the process. I don’talways understand what I put down atfirst,” Williams explained. “But later Ican go back to it and add a word hereor there, and suddenly it makessense. I don’t know if it will be thatway with (visual artwork) for me. Writ-ing is something that moves throughme ... but visual art is something thatcomes to me in my head, in dreamsand I store them away in the corner ofmy mind until I’m ready to put themon canvas.”
Still adjusting to work with paints,Williams is confident that she will bedisplaying her first paintings by theend of summer, and at The Base-ment.
Local artist Sam Leumas is alsoeager to “convey multiple messages
at once” with his creations. “That’swhat a picture (worth one thousandwords) can do ... depending on who’slooking at it; it can say all kinds of dif-ferent things,” said Leumas.
His acrylic on canvas work, “VoxTrot” seems to scream with a dozen -or more - different messages. Whenasked what inspired this uniqueacrylic painting, Leumas said with asmile, “It was inspired by a girl.”
Leumas, a 21-year-old Bakersfieldnative, has been painting steadily forthe last 13 years; and all that prac-tice is about to pay off. Joey Witt ofthe Outer Limits skate shop has justcommissioned a limited editionseries of skateboards from this tal-ented, emerging artist. Each hand-
painted, one-of-a-kind design will befeatured on a rescued board.
Witt, who has been theowner/operator of Outer Limits for15 years now, says this project hasan important dual-motivation behindit.
“I try as much as possible to pro-mote the arts scene in Bakersfield,”said Witt. “In creating this project, wewant to draw attention to the artworkon the boards; but at the same time,we want to raise awareness aboutrecycling. So many kids buy a board, and then just throw it away later ...even though the board still has a lotof use left in it. It’s wasteful and itkills a lot of trees.”
Taking positive action, Witt res-
cues these discarded boards for re-use. “It’s really great when artistscan take these old boards and makesomething new with them. To recyclethem really makes me happy,” hesaid.
While other artists may be added, later, Witt says that “Right now, Samis the main focus of this project.” Healso adds, “Art is our future. It’s soimportant to have respect for our artscommunity, and I hope this projectwill encourage that.” FOR MORE INFO:Call The Basement: 859-1904E-MAIL:[email protected]

WOW!2 years! My, how time flies …
Right now, I can only think back to all of
the great local writers, photographers, read-

had the privilege of meeting and working
with over the past year. Everyday I discover

2007, and to this day continues to keep
burning up the streets of Bakersfield.
Everyday I receive message after mes-
sage of well-wishes, thank yous, and shout-
outs from people not just from Bakersfield,
but from all over the world. I’ve even sent
stacks of Bakotopia mags across the
globe! It’s manic, babe!
While the list of people I’d like to thank
would take up an entire issue in itself, I’d
like to remind you that Bakotopia belongs
to you and your support is appreciated
each and every day!
The following messages are just a sam-
ple of the cool e-mails I’ve received along
with a few special dedications and even a
poem!

Q: I got pulled over and the police found a joint in my car. They gave me a ticket. What should I do?
A: Possession of less than an ounce of marijuana is a misdemeanor punishable as an infraction. You can only get a fine and not jail time. You could just take the fine and get it over with. The court or D.A. might also offer you a counseling program, which, if you complete it, would result in the dismissal of the charges. Or you could consult with a Public Defender or private attorney to see if your rights were violated during the stop, which could result in the evidence being suppressed and the case dismissed.
