Kehen Temple, one of ancient temples in Bali, is a beautiful Hindu temple located only 1 km north of Bangli City on a foot of a hill overlooking the city, a high place which is a strategic place for viewing the surrounding.

Templul Kehen, unul dintre cele mai vechi temple din Bali, este un frumos templu hindus situat la numai un kilometru nord de oraşul Bangli, la poalele unui deal cu vedere spre oraş, situat la o înălţime care asigură o strategică vedere panoramică a împrejurimilor.

Bali is known as an island of thousands temples. In every village there are several temples (and at least one small temple in each home of Balinese so one can therefore safely say that there are more temples than homes in Bali) which reach to a total of 10.000. Balinese word for temple is ‘pura’ which means 'space surrounded by a wall'. Although many temples are quiet and uninhabited, they are transformed into colorful, active and decorated places of worship when there is a festival. While offerings are made, performances of traditional dances and gamelan, cockfighting and gambling enliven the atmosphere.

Bali este cunoscută ca insula cu mii de temple. În fiecare sat există mai multe temple (şi cel puţin un mic templu în fiecare casa din Bali, aşa că se poate afirma că în Bali există mai multe temple decât case), ajungând la un total de peste 10.000.Cuvântul balinez pentru templu este „pura", care înseamnă „spaţiu înconjurat de un zid". Deşi multe temple sunt liniştite şi nelocuite, acestea se transformă în locuri pline de culoare, agitaţie şi podoabe cu ocazia sărbătorilor. In the pleasant town of Bangli, ancient capital of the Gelgel dynasty, the impressive Pura Kehen was the site of sovereigns’ coronations. The people of Bangli believe that Kehen Temple is the largest and the most sacred temple of the region and regard it as the state temple of Bangli.Kehen Temple offers an authentic Balinese temple atmosphere. It has three courtyards connected by steps, and is decorated with carvings and statues. In the first courtyard is a huge Banyan tree, surrounded by walls inlaid with Chinese porcelain. In the next courtyard, multi-roofed shrines (merus) dominate the area. On the right side of this inner courtyard are three throne shrines representing the Hindu Trinity, Brahma, Wisnu and Siwa.

Impresionantul templu Kehen a fost locul de încoronare a suveranilor în vechea capitală a dinastiei Gelgel, plăcutul oraş Bangli de azi. Locuitorii cred că Templul Kehen este templul cel mai mare şi cel mai sacru al regiunii şi-l consideră templu de stat.Templul Kehen oferă o autentică atmosferă sacră balineză. El are trei incinte conectate prin scări de piatră, şi este decorat cu sculpturi şi statui. În prima incintă, zidurile căreia sunt încrustate cu porţelan chinezesc, se află un imens copac sacru Banyan (Ficus benghalensis). Incinta următoare cuprinde altare cu acoperişuri suprapuse (merus). Pe partea dreaptă sunt trei altare-tron reprezentând Sfânta Triadă hindusă, Brahma, Vişnu, Şiva.

Pura Kehen raises over eight terrace levels against a backdrop of lush greenery. Elephant statues greet visitors at the foot of the steps. This magnificent temple that was the kingdom temple of Bangli kingdom was built in the 11th century. This temple enshrines three gods (Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu) of Hinduism.

The positive force is represented by the God and negative forces represented by the Bhuta Kala, But what exactly is, or are, bhuta kala? The average Balinese would reply that bhutas and kalas, or bhuta kala, are evil spirits that cause a great many of the small and large problems of mankind, from a lost watch to a crippling disease. O scară cu 38 de trepte duce la poarta deasupra căreia străjuieşte figura ameninţătoare a lui Kala. Universul balinez este echilibrul a două forţe ale naturii, forţa pozitivă şi cea negativă. Forţa pozitivă este reprezentată de Dumnezeu iar forţele negative de Kala Bhuta. Further up, the finely worked entrance gateway opens onto a magnificent banyan tree, on which is mounted a bale kulkul (summoning drum). Banyan tree grows thick in the temple, and quiet air drifts. The tourist is few and it may be good that you meditate in this peaceful, quiet temple.

Dincolo de poarta minuţios sculptată se află imensul copac banyan, în care este montat turnul unde este amplasată o tobă - kulkul, cu rol asemănător clopotniţei din bisericile creştine (folosită pentru convocarea comunităţii, anunţând ceremoniile).

All temples derive their direction from the mountains and the sea. The direction toward the mountains, Kaja, is the most significant direction. The direction toward the sea is Kelod.The direction toward the sunrise, Kangin, is found in most secondary shrines.

Toate templele îşi datorează direcţia amplasării lor faţă de munţi şi mare. Direcţia spre munţi, Kaja, este direcţia cea mai importantă. Direcţia spre mare este Kelod. Direcţia spre răsărit de soare, Kangin, se regăseşte în cele mai multe altare secundare.

Another split gate leads into the innermost and most sacred part of the temple. In Bali, such open gates signify access to holy sites, the "split" gate symbolizing a mount of the gods that has been torn asunder through its midpoint. The inner sanctum is protected by an additional, closed gate.

O altă „poartă secţionată” duce la partea cea mai sacră a templului, poartă în formă de munte, care simbolizează muntele sfânt şi prin care este obligatoriu să treci. Aceasta fiind o incintă sacră, trecerea prin poartă este o purificare înainte de a intra. În interiorul curţilor, uneori sunt amplasate tronuri mici şi simple, locuri ocupate de localnici şi de zeii mai puţini importanţi. De o parte şi de alta a curţii sunt statuete ale idolilor. Cei mai importanţi sunt în partea muntelui şi cei mai puţin importanţi sunt în partea răsăriteană. Aceste statuete, sunt amplasate cu o anumită regulă şi ordine, unele temple au mai multe altele mai puţine. De obicei sunt aşezate pe acoperişuri supraetajate în formă de piramidă, iar statuetele acoperă toată suprafaţa. Numărul treptelor din acoperişul în formă de piramidă diferă de la templu la templu, în funcţie de importanţa şi puterea acestuia. Cele mai multe trepte pot fi în număr de 11.

În incinta interioară, partea cea mai sacră a templului, cea mai înaltă dintre construcţii (merus), având 11 nivele ale acoperişului, este dedicată lui Şiva

The roof of the temple is made of the fiber of chromatic black palm tree. The best, longest lasting roofs are made from a coarse black fiber obtained from the jaka palm tree, grown especially for this purpose. The roof is installed something like a thatched roof over a wooden framework.

Acoperişurile templelor (care se schimbă la zece ani) sunt confecţionate din fibre de palmieri jaka, cultivaţi special în acest scop

The last 8th terraces is the central courtyard where the symbol of gods shrines are exist. The whole pavilions are in total 43 shrines and supporting pavilions. The biggest ritual for this temple is fall on Rebo Kliwon Shinta, a system of date incorporated from Hindu Java calendar system. From the innermost courtyard, on the highest of the seven terraces, there are good views of the whole temple precinct and of Mt Batur.

Pe ultima terasă (a opta) sunt altarele zeilor, în total 43. Cea mai importantă ceremonie la acest templu este toamna pe Rebo Kliwon Shinta, dată calculată conform calendarului local.  De pe acestă terasă este o minunată vedere panoramică a împrejurimilor şi a muntelui Batur.

Shiva, zeul morţii si al nenorocirilor, este cel mai adulat de localnici, deoarece ei sunt convinşi că doar el este cel care poate să îi salveze din necazurile pe care activitatea vulcanică din zonă le poate aduce oricând (Indonezia are 400 de vulcani, dintre care 100 sunt activi).
