Above all, Seminyak is about indulgence. A typical Seminyak day begins and concludes by the sea, with forays into the areas shops and eateries in between. Sunsets are striking, and can be savored from many venues along the beach, while an ever-increasing number of restaurants and bars await discovery along Jl. Oberoi and Jl. KUTA/LEGIAN24 | BaliSavvyKUTA & LEgIANBustling Kuta is traditionally the initial port of call for first-time visitors to Bali, and especially for those of the surfing persuasion. Here, within a dense network of teeming alleyways and busy streets, are inexpensive hotels, lively bars, tattoo artists, hawkers, tourist knick-knacks and a range of attire targeting the beach loving tourist. Increasingly, there are more refined establish-ments springing up to challenge the cheap and cheerful image, but theres no downplaying that Kuta spirit: care-free, party-ready, and young at heart. The Legian area, heading north, is like Kutas older sister: with its quieter shopping ambience and more polished hangouts, it is a bridge between the happy chaos of Kuta and the sophis-tication of Seminyak. There, he became MADE WIJAYA, undergoing a metamorphosis that took him from tennis coach to world-renowned designer of tropical gardens, with more than 600 to his name. For decades, his Stranger in Paradise columns have given an insight into the ways and workings of Balinese culture from the perspective of an inquisitive and sometimes irreverent observer, one deeply enthralled with his favorite muse, this island of the gods...What is paradise? If paradise were anywhere it would have to be somewhere tem-perate, Nol Coward once said.Bali is my lover and my muse, which sounds sombong, but there has never been a week that I dont swoon over the beauty of some situation or ceremony or get misty-eyed by the start up of the marching band at a grand cremaFacing page: Made Wijaya, a.k.a. It must be love because it feels so good. Now, in the same breath, I must say that my heart is sinking as I watch the physical environ-ment (outside the temples and palaces and some of the hotels) go to environmental design hell in a race-car. Paradise by design? The Four Seasons Resort at Jim-baran Bay was my most enjoyable landscape project to date because it was a Vegemite-fueled inte-grated design miracle. A garden of 1000 picture postcards of para-dise, Tim Street-Porter called it, satirizing the abuse of the para-dise epithet.House design wise, the Villa Keliki has been the most gorgeous property realized to date I was allowed to exercise my passion for the theatrical and for colonial architecture. The result is rather dreamy and paradisiacal. The Warung Enak caf in Ubud, which I designed in 2005 with Pintor Sirait, is a little slice of Funk for lotus-eaters.Pintor is a great co-conspira-tor and design collaborator. He is my lightning rod, chief emotional adviser, stylist and fan. I could not do what I do the Stranger col-umns in particular without his educated, arty, fun-loving Indone-sian back-up and support.Bali StyleLandscape-wise, Bali Style means an artful, natural romantic gar-den, peopled with statuary and pots. A lotus pond is optional. Fake shrines and temple umbrel-las are Non-U Hindu.Interiors-wise, Bali Style means the shabby-chic mix of colonial furniture and local textiles and art, in an indoor-outdoor setting. The Amandari is the ultimate in Bali Style. Properties like the Novus Taman Bebek, the Tand-jung Sari and the Uma in Ubud are high Camp versions, more like ryokan these days in a sea of new Asian schtick.I dont export Balinese gar-dens, just commando gardeners, and we do mostly tropical artful natural poetic (I hope) gardens around the world. The Ba-linese Garden outside Bali is about as relevant as the fadish Japanese gardens in shopping malls across America in the 1960s. Balis Best...My favorite Balinese vista is down the centre of the Pengero-bongan Temples main court just as the 100 or so assembled devo-tees are about to go into trance.A Bali experience of which Ill never tire is going to Pura Luhur Uluwatu early the first morning of the festival with a busload or two of fellow workers and being there sipping coffee after prayers in the custodians pavilion with a view over the Indian Ocean as the gamelan strikes up in the adjacent court and the gods arrive from nearby Ungasan.Every Balinese seems to be an artist...All Balinese are beauty warriors and have a great respect for art. If art is the end goal of making a garden, or a kite, or a temple look good then the Balinese throw themselves into it full-heartedly. They stay loyal till its done. Its been an honor to work with them for the past 40 years and benefit from this passion, and help market it I must add. The Balinese have the manners of princes when they travel abroad and love to show off their Beauty Warrior talents, no ego attached.Taksu is the energy that artists divine when they create great art. Artisans dont have it. A perfor-mance or a statue either has it or it doesnt. There are shrines to this taksu in many mountain villages, and taksu-diviners and healers. The Balinese have a strong belief in taksu. When one sees the grand canal in Venice for the first time and weeps: thats being hit by Tak-su-enforced beauty. On DanceI come from a long line of dancers (my grandfather was a Lancashire lad who danced with both Chap-lin and Stan Laurel) and I always wanted to be a ballet dancer. I spent 6 years at the Dance Acad-emy (now Institut Seni Indonesia) in Denpasar but didnt get very far as my tennis coach shoulders got in the way. I love classical Balinese dance like gambuh and arja (mask plays really) and the Telek celestial nymphs who precede the barong in a classical barong theatre be-cause the gestures, costumes and music match the setting. What can I say? I love all classical and tra-ditional dances around the world, especially mystical ones, because they invoke taksu. Sufi song and dance is wonderful...the Bedoyo Ketawang dance performed once a year in Solo is my all-time favor-ite.Bali by NightI am more a morning (Sanur) person but I used to love the mid-night roll call of degenerates at the old Mades Warung (I was one and didnt miss a night for years in the late 70s). These days my main night outing is once a year to Milos birthday party, Scrabble in Sidakarya Village, early dinner at Warung Sulawesi on Jalan Pe-titenget, and, when the World Cup meets Wimbledon once a century, I go to Bali Joe Mens Club (where they have dual screens) and enjoy the amusing divertissements.Sanur vs UbudWell, I am a confirmed Sanurite, having grown up in the staff quar-ters of the Tandjung Sari and with the Brahmans of Intaran, but I love the Balinese-Expat parties and gatherings in Ubud. I have many Tjokaholic friends and regard myself as a serf of the Puri Saren Kauh (home of Australias own princess in paradise, Jero Asri and her prince-consort the Bendesa Ubud, Tjokorda Kertyasa).68 | BaliSavvymaDE WijaYaThe Amandari is the ultimate in Bali Style.ISLAND INSIDERJava vs Bali For cenuries Bali was known as Little Java...its funny now that vast stretches of Denpasar and Tuban are now called Little Java. Going to Java from Bali these days is like going back to In-donesia!Building BaliExpat homes should be in or on the side of villages, so the resi-dents are one with the village...and the ricefields and seashores spared. Basta. Most of todays New Asian/Zen Bali Villa architects should be shot for crimes against geometry and theology. The Balinese culture is a dy-namic one...so who knows how much worse the domestic archi-tecture will get. Already the tem-ples are deserting their gorgeous Majapahit (Javanese) roots in fa-vor of the ghastly trendoid andes-ite. Muscle Mary architects keep building microwave oven-like villas. And every now and then there is a miracle, like the Alila Uluwatu, which is fresh, original, tropical and, if a few shrines were added, nominally Balinese. The Good Old DaysAh, the glorious fruit salad days of 1970s Kuta/Ubud. Seminyak was just a spooky place no-one went to. East Bali was a two day trek. Nusa Lembongan was an expedition. Sa-nur was middle class and we were all hippies or basket-traders.The views to the mountains and the sea and the rivers were everywhere. One had to go to Sa-nur for pizza (Da Marcos). Every second Western person in Ubud was an anthropologist or study-ing dance. The Balinese dragged everyone to the most amazing fes-tivals and ceremonies.FlowersMy favorite flower is the Gloriosa Superba, the flower of the Argen-tines, because one cant say its name without sounding Austra-lian...and it springs up and down when you admire it. www.strangerinparadise.commaDE WijaYamade Wijayawww.ptwijaya.comwww.strangerinparadise.comFoUr seasons resort at jimBaran BayT. +62 361 701010 Pintor sirait (sculptor)www.pintorsirait.comWarUng enakwww.warungenakbali.comamandariJl.
