Outside of work Robert loved jazz and didn’t miss a Mildura

Jazz Festival for thirty odd years. Many of his greatest friend-

ships evolved through jazz. .Robert was also a tireless worker

organising the Festival for many years and received life mem-

bership of the Jazz Club in acknowledgment of his efforts.

Some of the best times in Eileen and Robert’s lives were

attending jazz festivals all over Victoria and sometimes inter-

state. Robert loved to get out and dance and Eileen and Marie

Ballantine were his two favourite dance partners . One abiding

memory is of Robert leading the jazz parade down Mildura’s

main street at the start of the Festival ,in his brown striped

jacket and jaunty jazz hat captured him in his element doing

what he Loved .

Eileen and Robert weaved their love of jazz into their business

by holding several jazz nights at the cafe which are remem-

bered as incredibly fun events loved by the musos and

attendees alike. Pam and Bill Lawler are among the great

friends they met in the cafe and they bonded over their mutu-

al love of jazz..

Our condolences to Eileen on the pass-

ing of Robert.

LIFE IS A LOT LIKE JAZZ, I ’S BEST WHEN YOU IMPROVISE…….. George Gershwin

TRIBUTE TO LEN HOEKSTRA

LET US REMEMBER …………. ROBERT EDGAR

Len worked at the Ford Motor Company in Gee-long,apparently every Friday he would rush home and pack a bag and travel To Ballarat by train to attend the local dances,he loved his Jazz and dancing . It was at the Ballarat St Pats dance where he met Molly, the lass was to be the love of his life ! Len soon left his job in Geelong and moved to Ballarat and the rest is history. Len was a softly spoken man with a gentle loving nature. He had a huge collection of jazz memorabilia, he left most to the Victorian Museum of Jazz, his family have kindly donated many of his CD’s to our club, the CD’s are in pristine condition . We would like to thank Len’s family for giving such a wonderful and most treasured donation to our club. Marion McHenry

CONTACT MARTIN DIRECT BY E-MAIL BELOW IF YOU ARE INTERESTED ……………...BJC G’day , I need to down size soon and have approximately 500 Jazz CDs that I must reluctantly part with . Collected over the years the contents is now on iPods and . Would any of your members be interested ? I have had an offer of of a $1 a go from the local shark but I’d rather they were appreciated rather than be used in a commercial sense .Contents range from the early days [ 1889 ] through to the Stereo era in 1955 fairly comprehensively and limited there after to Ellington and Basie . I’m in Camperdown but spending Christmas at Creswick RACV .I should emphasise here that I want to keep the collection together . There are a small number of favourite LPs as well . Those definitely need a good home . Is any body interested ? [email protected]

THERE IS TWO KINDS OF MUSIC,THE GOOD AND THE BAD, I PLAY THE GOOD KIND…Louis Armstrong

Ho, Ho, Ho. It is Christmas Time.

Christmas is upon us already and it seems that the years are passing so

quickly (is it just me or does it seem that way with you as well???).

We are very lucky that we have a local band (well mostly) playing for our

Christmas Gig – the Hot ‘B’ Hines. They were the 2nd band that Maree and I

heard after joining the Ballarat Jazz Club and part of the reason why we defi-

nitely decided that “we love jazz”

We have been treated to many new bands so far this year and I think that

they have all been very good. The Royal Australian Navy Jazz Band that

played at our last Gig, were very refreshing and played many tunes that I had

not heard before. It was quite apparent that they all had exceptional talent

(but isn’t that what you would expect from our Defence Forces??) and, what

about Laura’s huge voice – she was something special. They were quite and

extraordinary group of Sailors.

It won’t be long before we will need to be planning for our AGM (April 2019)

and the election of a new committee. After our Christmas Gig there are only

two more to go as we do not have a Gig in January. The Club is really doing

quite well, and we have had some excellent bands which has encouraged

some good numbers to attend. We already have some excellent bands

booked for early next year, so our future looks very bright but……………. we

still need new committee members to provide fresh ideas and maybe a new

way at looking at old ways.

We have come a long way over the past 7 or 8 years but we have more to do.

Not only do we need to consolidate what we have been able to achieve but

we need to move on and to do this we need those fresh faces with their fresh

ideas. If you think that you can help out in any way, please just come and

see me.

All that said and done, on behalf of the Committee, may I wish you all a very

Merry Christmas. Whether you eat or drink a little too much during your cele-

brations, just make sure you are back with us enjoying Jazz next February.

Your President,

John Bunn
