EARSHOT GOLDEN EAR AWARDSIn March at the Royal Room, Earshot Jazz held its 26th annual awards show, celebrating the best of what Seattle jazz had to offer over the last year. Opening and closing the night were Eug-enie Jones and her band of Peter Adams on piano, Tim Carey on bass, Brian Smith on drums, and Ernesto Pediangco on percus-sion, delivering a tight first set of wonderfully stylized covers. The ceremony begun in tribute to the late Ernestine Anderson, with Jim Wilke, Paul de Barros, and Anderson’s daughter Shel-ley sharing memories of the beloved singer. Later awards were presented to:

Earshot continues its collaboration with the Seattle Art Mu-seum in programming and presenting the Art of Jazz Series, now in it’s 19th year. Always well attended, the after-work concerts are free with museum admission—a great bargain given the two-for-one line up of fine jazz and major art ex-hibits set for 2015.

The Summer Saxophone Camp offers four days of immersion in sax-ophone study for beginning through advanced high school students. Whether students are interested in jazz, classical, or modern improvisa-

tion, the SSI is designed to give saxophon-ists of all levels of ability the chance to con-nect with like-minded students and faculty.

SSI coaches are four of the Seattle ar-ea’s most respected performers and educa-tors, including saxophonists Steve Tresel-er, Neil Welch, Mark Taylor, and Evan Smith. Students will work alongside their coaches in a unique environment of collab-oration and mentorship, and are guaranteed a private lesson during the week with one of the SSI’s experienced faculty.

BELLEVuE JAZZ & BLuES fESTiVAL, JuNE 1-5, 2016

The 9th Annual Bellevue Jazz & Blues Festival returns to Downtown Bellevue June 1-5, 2016. National artists, local musicians and high school all stars will perform in free and ticketed venues throughout the weekend.

Featured acts include: Shemekia Copeland, Etienne Charles, Lee Oskar & Special Guests, and Seattle’s own McTuff.

Shows range from concerts at the Theatre at Meydenbauer — with its ideal acoustics and intimate setting — to tableside sets in downtown bars and hotels.

Award-winning high school jazz programs will be featured in the festi-val’s Student Showcase. Groups will perform 45-minute sets highlighting the rich and diverse offerings presented by

members of the local high school and middle school jazz scene.

In addition, more than 40 shows in various locations will feature top local and regional artists.

What was a neighborhood primarily of industrial buildings, dive bars and fishermen when John Bishop moved to Ballard in 1991, is now one of the most dynamic neighborhoods in the country with an ever-expanding collection of restaurants, boutiques, music venues, lounges ... and dive bars and fishermen. With that in mind we give you the 2016 edition of the Ballard Jazz Festival! Again, the festival kicks off with the Brotherhood of the Drum at Conor Byrne Pub. The Northwest is home to an incredible array of great drummers and we will be showcasing just a few of them including the legendary improvisor GREGG KEPLINGER; the fiery grooves of Seattle’s TARIK ABOUZIED, and JOHN BISHOP performing the music of the Mahavishnu Orchestra with the group, Being John McLaughlin. The Guitar Summit has developed into a fan favorite over the last ten years, and this year’s should be just as inspired with three amazing guitarists on the bill - COREY CHRISTIANSEN, a definitive guitarist of our time debuting music from his new Origin CD, San Francisco transplant TIM VOLPICELLA, bringing his modern, improvisational jazz aesthetic, and two true Northwest originals performing together - DAVE PETERSON and JOHN STOWELL. Sponsored by VERITY CREDIT UNION, the perennially-packed Ballard Jazz Walk promises to be another great time as over 90 great musicians from the Northwest and New York perform at 10 different venues throughout Ballard. Also on Friday, for the first time, we’ll feature music on the spacious outdoor stages of Pono Ranch and Peddler Brewing Company. To properly recover from Friday night’s Jazz Walk and prepare for Saturday evening’s Mainstage Concert, the festival teams with the Nordic Heritage Museum to present the Swedish Pancake Jazz Brunch featuring the internationally known and Northwest favorite, trumpeter /saxophonist JAY THOMAS and his quartet, along with a vintage Volvo Auto Show. For the Mainstage Concert, we turn to the intimacy of the Nordic Heritage Museum for performances by guitar giant MIKE STERN, backed by the GEORGE COLLIGAN TRIO, and legendary New York pianist HAL GALPER, celebrating 10 years of performing and recording with his latest trio featuring bassist Jeff Johnson and drummer John Bishop.

Drummer Gregg Keplinger enjoys legendary status among aficionados of Northwest music for his powerful, individualistic percussion style.

Gregg began his musical career with various rock and jazz projects in the 1960s and was a key member of the free-thinking musical community that formed around late 60s coffeehouse The Llanghaelhyn, the crucible of Seattle’s modern-jazz movement. In addition to Stackpole, Gregg’s musical resume includes work in such disparate contexts as Soundgarden, his ongoing duo with jazz saxophonist Rick Mandyck, and the Ringling Brothers Circus band. He is known internationally for his unique, handmade Keplinger snare drums, used by his major inspiration, Elvin Jones, among other luminaries. He has also toured extensively as a drum technician with Pearl Jam,

Soundgarden, Our Lady Peace, and others.

As a performer Tarik Abouzied has played and traveled with a vast array of incredible musicians. His groups have collectively produced six original albums: two from Pocket Change, an instrumental funk septet in the vein of Tower of Power, three from Hardcoretet, a more modern instrumental jazz quartet, and one from McTuff, an incredible funk/jazz Hammond organ trio. His current project, Happy Orchestra, was awarded 4Culture’s 2015 Arts Project Grant and is in the process of recording its first full-length album. Aside from these performing groups Tarik has played with local and national greats including Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band), Skerik, Brian Haas, Jessica Lurie, Nigel Hall, Mike Stern, and many others.

As a drummer, educator, record label owner, graphic designer, publisher, and festival presenter, John Bishop has been one of the primary voices in Northwest Jazz for 35 years. He has performed in concerts and clubs with Bobby McFerrin, Lee Konitz, Slide Hampton, Benny Golson, George Cables, Kenny Werner, Bobby Hutcherson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Julian

Priester, Herb Ellis, Buddy DeFranco, Pete Christlieb, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, Kenny Rankin, and countless others. He’s appeared on more than 100 albums, and was inducted into the Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame in 2008.

Being John McLaughlin is the clever name for the Seattle sextet tackling the phenomenally complex, combustible, and beautiful music of 1970s jazz-fusion deities Mahavishnu Orchestra. McLaughlin was the superhumanly dexterous guitarist/leader and one of the catalysts in Miles Davis’s paradigm-shifting electric period. BJM focuses on the group’s first two albums—1971’s Inner Mounting Flame and 1973’s Birds of Fire—which remain overwhelming sources of quicksilver inventiveness and spiritual profundity.

Corey Christiansen has a number of publications with Mel Bay and has conducted countless guitar clinics and concerts across the country and beyond including Europe, South Africa and Australia. He has also performed at many notable festivals and venues including John Pisano’s Guitar Night in Los Ange-les, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the Um-bria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy, the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, the Clearwater Jazz Festival, the Daytona Beach Jazz Festival, the Classic American Guitar Show, and the St. Lou-is Jazz Festival. He has also performed and/or recorded with many outstanding jazz artists including Jimmy Bruno, John Pi-sano, James Moody, Joe Negri, Willie Akins, Chuck Redd, Sid Jacobs, Jack Wilkins, Christian McBride, George Duke, Terri Lyne Carrington, Danny Gottlieb, and many, many others.

His new CD, Factory Girl, will be available at the Ballard Jazz Festival.

Nominated for a GRAMMY Award for his production work on The PapaHugs Band release “Are We There Yet?,” guitarist Tim Volpicella has been active as a sound designer and engineer for many years through his company, Harmonic Fox Sound De-sign.

As a guitarist, Tim attended the Berklee School of Music where he studied with John Abercrombie, John Scofield, Da-vid Liebman and John Stowell, and has performed around the United States, Europe, Japan and South America. His resume includes appearances at Earshot Jazz, Monterey Jazz Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival and the Len-nie Tristano Jazz Festival (Naples, Italy). Tim has performed with artists including Russell Ferrante, Chet Baker, Hafez Modirzadeh and John Carlos Perea, and has appeared on nu-merous studio recordings. Tim’s original compositions can be heard on his own CDs, “Many Places” and “Unspoken Words.”

As Music Coordinator for San Jose Jazz (1998-2002), Tim brought music education to local children through the Commu-nity Youth Outreach Program and has taught guitar workshops at the Stanford Jazz Workshop and Jazzschool. He has been a frequent clinician at colleges in the western US.

“John Stowell plays jazz, but he doesn’t use any of the cliches; he has an incredible originality. John is a master creator.” - LARRY CORYELL

John Stowell began his successful career with guitar les-sons in his native Connecticut from guitarist Linc Chamberlind, and from John Mehegan, pianist and respected jazz educator at the Julliard School of Music and Yale University. Several years later he met noted bassist David Friesen in NYC and launched a critically acclaimed touring and recording association that lasted 7 years, included 6 albums, and performances in Eu-rope, Canada, USA and Australia. During that time, John also moved to Oregon. Paul Horn, John, David Friesen and Robin Horn were invited to perform in the Soviet Union. It was the first time in 40 years that American jazz musicians had been invited to play public performances in Russia, paving the way for many others to follow. John Stowell is an in-demand teach-er and clinician of jazz guitar. He has taught at the country’s most prestigious schools of music as a clinician. He has been

constantly touring the world since the ‘70s, performing with friends abroad or with his several working bands - including Scenes, Stowell/Zilber Quartet, or in duos with Kendra Shank or David Liebman.

DAVE PETERSONDave Peterson flies under the radar in most notable jazz

circles, because he isn’t one to brag about every exploit. He’s into the music and the good musicians, not into self-aggrandiz-ing that is often so common in such a business.

But that doesn’t mean this Northwest guitar genius is any less the jazz player. He’s known as one of the greatest jazz guitar players in the Pacific Northwest.

Known as a dependable sideman able to shred and turn me-lodic, Peterson has worked with countless big jazz names (Chet Baker, Bud Shank, John Clayton/Jeff Hamilton Big Band, etc.). His 2004 record, “Portal,” with bassist Chuck Deardorf

shows off that melodic shredding ability well. All About Jazz reviewer Mark Sabbatini recognized Peterson’s pleasant style: “Peterson invokes a lot of memories of Montgomery with his tone and highly accessible melodic solos.” Most of all, the jazz musicians Peterson has played with have only high praise for the master. Saxophonist Mark Taylor launches a new ensemble with the ebullient pianist and Cornish alumna and adjunct instruc-tor Dawn Clement. The two award-winning Pacific Northwest artists bring listeners a lineup of new work they are composing together.

Clement began playing piano when she was ten years old, with early lessons with ragtime pianist and church organist Keith Taylor. Eventually settling in Vancouver, Wash., Clement joined the high school jazz band and started sitting in at Portland-area jam sessions. Her career today includes playing at the Mary Lou Williams Piano Competition at Washington DC’s Kennedy Cen-ter and Paris’ International Martial Solal Jazz Piano Competition, teaching at Cornish and at Port Townsend’s Centrum Jazz Work-shop, and releasing five CDs. Clement is currently working on her Masters of Composition at the Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Mark Taylor is a creative improviser and impeccable en-semble player. He performs and records extensively with Matt Jorgensen +451, Jim Knapp Orchestra, Tom Varner, Thomas Marriott, Wayne Horvitz, Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, and the Randy Halberstadt Quintet. Taylor has two acclaimed Ori-gin Records releases: After Hours (2002) and Spectre (2009). Marina Albero has played with some of the most important artists of early, Flamenco and latin music including l’Arpeggiata, Barbarito Torres (Buenavista Social Club), Glen Velez, Pepe Habichuela, Carlos Saura, & Sara Flores. She plays hammered dulcimer, piano & vibes and has studied music in Spain & Cuba. Born in Barcelona, Marina Albero grew up playing traditional music with her family Grallers band “Stampede,” which took

them on tours to Japan and the U.S. in the ‘90s. At the age of eight, she studied piano & theory and later, drums and jazz piano while still working with the family project, She studied at the Conservatory Isaac Albeniz and the Conservatorio Municipal de Barcelona. Julian MacDonough is a drummer, educator, and artistic director of the Whatcom Jazz Music Arts Center in Bellingham, where he presents concerts and workshops year-round. - Bad Luck - Bad Luck is a 10-year collaboration between Se-attle-based musicians Chris Icasiano on drums and Neil Welch on saxophone/electronics. With four albums under their belt, Bad Luck has created an incredibly diverse array of music — no small feat in the heavily trodden world of drum/saxophone duos. One of the most esteemed electric guitarists of his generation, Mike Stern has dis-tinguished himself over a four-decade career that has encompassed musical partnerships with Blood, Sweat & Tears, Billy Cobham, Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, the Brecker Brothers and Joe Henderson, as well as 16 recordings as a leader (six of which were nom-inated for GRAMMY® Awards). An electrifying soloist whose blistering chops combine rock-fusion firepower with sophisticated jazz harmonies and his inherently bluesy string bending prowess, Stern has the ability to instantly elevate the proceedings on any gig or session he plays by channeling the spirits of his own personal guitar heroes Jimi Hendrix, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall and Albert King.

Born in Boston on January 10, 1953, Stern grew up in Washington, DC, then returned to Boston to study at the Berklee College of Music. He got his first big break with Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1976 at age 23. After touring and recording for two years with the popular rock band he was recruited by drummer Billy Cobham for a stint in his power-house fusion band Glass Menagerie from 1979 to early 1981. Stern was subsequently re-cruited by Miles Davis and was part of the jazz legend’s celebrated comeback band (with bassist Marcus Miller, drummer Al Foster, percussionist Mino Cinelu and saxophonist Bill Evans), making his public debut with Miles on June 27, 1981 at the KIX nightclub in Boston, a performance documented on the 1982 live album We Want Miles. During his three-year period with Miles, Stern appeared on two other recordings with the jazz maestro – 1981’s Man with the Horn and 1983’s Star People. He later toured with Jaco Pastorius’ Word of Mouth Band from 1983 through 1985 then returned to Miles’ lineup for a second tour of duty that lasted close to a year.

Galper formed one of his most critically acclaimed groups as a leader in the early ’70s. With trumpeter Randy Brecker, his saxophonist brother Michael, bassist Wayne Dockery and drummer Billy Hart, the new Hal Galper Quintet de-buted at Sweet Basil in New York’s Greenwich Village, eventually recording four albums including Reach Out, Speak With a Single Voice, Children Of The Night and Redux 78.

Galper’s discography includes 99 albums, with 32 of them under his name. He is a leader not only as a performer but also as an educator, with emphasis on theory, performance and the worldly side of music as a profession. He was a founding member of New York’s New School Of Jazz And Contemporary Music and recently retired from his 14 year tenure at Purchase Conservatory. His best selling theory of Forward Motion, was the first interactive E-book in which its more than 300 musical examples could be played in a computer browser.

Growing up in Rochester, NY in the ‘60s and ‘70s, Marcello was greatly affected by the swirling jazz scene

around him. Being home to the Eastman School of Music, Rochester attracted great young musicians of the

day with many making frequent trips back and forth to New York City to take advantage of the work op-

portunities. For a short period in 1976-1977, Marcello took his camera wherever he went on his journeys to

check out jazz around New York. From established icons - such as Dizzy Gillespie in his Buffalo hotel room

- to the up-and-comers performing at late-night loft sessions, he shot under-the-radar events during a period

that many had written off as being lost time for jazz. These vivid scenes tell an altogether different story.

Ruminations on the past, musical or otherwise, are often weighed down by the sediment of sentiment. But it certainly doesn’t have to be that way. Looking back can provide an outlet for the imagination to take control, and vibraphonist Tom Collier seems well aware of that. On Across The Bridge, Collier revisits his youth, delivering nine original numbers that touch on a childhood spent on the opposite side of the West Seattle Bridge from where he currently resides. It’s a personalized program that succeeds by avoiding mawkish tendencies and the quicksand of nostalgia. Instead of taking a tenderhearted path to the past, Collier reflects by rocking out with a strong crew of musicians who seem more than willing to have a good time in his world for a while. The stories on Across The Bridge are brought to life by three different bands, with Collier and bass-ist Dan Dean serving as the constants between the groups. Four tracks bring guitarist Larry Coryell and drummer John Bishop into the picture, three numbers feature guitarist Bill Frisell and drum-mer Ted Poor, and two pieces are delivered by the trio of Collier, Poor, and Dean, with the bassist also covering guitar duties to essentially create another quartet. It’s to Collier’s credit that, despite the personnel change-ups across the album, there’s tremendous consistency here. “The Junction,” a chromatically-laced composition with controlled aggression, kicks things off and sets things on a course that essentially remains steady for the entire album. Collier, Coryell, Dean, and Bishop dive headfirst into this heady rock-based music, bringing lots of energy and attitude to the surface. Following that brief opener, the band-shifting begins. The Frisell group comes into the picture to deliver “Beach Drive,” a somewhat slinky surf-side song that’s far more lighthearted than what came before it; the Coryell clan comes back with “Gold ‘N’ Blues,” the only swing based number on the record; the Dean-on-double-duty outfit joins the party with the slick funk of “The Admiral’s Point Of View”; and the Frisell band returns for a riff-fired rocker dubbed “47th ‘N’ Hudson.” In each and every one of those pieces, Collier remains at the center of the action while also creating an atmosphere that encourages interplay and invites his fellow musicians to take chances and step into the spotlight. The lone ballad on the album - “Genesee” - is the one place where dewy-eyed visions of Collier’s past come to color the music. But there’s nothing sappy about it, as it plays more like a daydream than a trip down memory lane. After that, the Collier that we’ve come to know from earlier in the album comes roaring back. “Harmonious Effusion On Olga Street,” beginning with Collier’s hypnotic sixteenth note riffs on marimba layered beneath Dean’s simple and effective guitar, gets the adrenaline going again. Then Collier downshifts for “Fauntleroy Mist,” a semi-haunting number perfectly suited to Frisell’s sound, and the title track, a rollicking fusion-funk farewell in keeping with the overall vibe of the record. While we’ll never know exactly what life

was like for a young Tom Collier, it must’ve been one hell of a wild and colorfulride. Seattle-based trumpeter Thomas Marriott plays well with electricity. Specifically, with the Hammond B3 organ. The most memorable of his now nine CDs on Origin Records feature either the Hammond B3 or some serious Moog synthesier/Fender Rhodes work: Crazy: The Music of Willie Nelson (2007), with Ryan Burns on electric keys; Human Spirit (2009), featuring Gary Versace on B3; and now Return of the East-West Summit, with the versatile George Colligan sit-ting in on the Hammond B3, and Marriott’s mentor, trumpeter Ray Vega sharing leader duties.

2010 was the year of the first paring of Vega and Marriott on Origin Records, with East/West Trumpet Summit, that, like it’s follow-up, tipped a hat to a cou-ple of the legendary rip-it-up trumpet pairings: Fats Navarro and Howard McGhee, and Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw. Return of the East-West trumpet Summit, like its predecessor, leans heavily on the Great American Songbook and jazz standards, with tunes from trombonist Curtis Fuller, hot bop trumpet man Lee Morgan, along with pianist Erroll Garner’s most famous tune, “Misty,” a very original take on Charlie Parker’s “Quasimodo” and a quirky read-ing of the much-covered “What Is This thing Called Love.”

Back to the George Colligan’s Hammond B3. In small jazz combos, the more common piano is punctuation for the stories the trumpeter tells. Ringing percussion cutting chunks of sounds into sections. With the organ, it’s all run-on sentences and run-on paragraphs, even cool-breeze drones for the rest of the band ride on, leaving the percussion/punctuation to ever-deft drummer Matt Jorgensen here.

The trumpet guys: Vega and Marriott are stellar, blowing with the fire and finesse, bringing in the mutes (harmon and cup) from time-to-time to give a mix to the sound.
