Former Sen. Rich served in the statesenate from 2004 to 2012, and prior tothat was a member of Florida House ofRepresentatives from 2000 to 2004.

Democrats will also have to choosebetween two candidates for state attor-ney general and the winner of theAugust election will face Republicanincumbent Pam Bondi in the Novembergeneral election, Ms. Swan said.

George Sheldon, former assistant sec-retary for Children and Families in theU.S. Department of Health and HumanServices, will face off against Perry E.Thurston Jr., who currently serves as theminority leader in the Florida House ofRepresentatives and represents District94, which includes parts of BrowardCounty.

Indian River County Republican vot-ers will have the option to weigh in onthe party’s candidate for the state sena-tor representing District 16.

Incumbent Sen. Thad Altman is beingchallenged by Monique Miller, a busi-nesswoman with a long career in thecomputer industry.

The winner of the primary will faceLloyd Stanton French, who is registeredas an Independent.

Another local senate seat, District 32,is up for election and during the Repub-lican primary incumbent Sen. JoeNegron will compete for votes againstBrandon M. Cannon, an entrepreneur

who has lived in various Florida cities, most recently in Port. St. Lucie.

The winner of the primary will faceDemocrat candidate Bruno Moore andIndependent candidate MatthewJoshua Loew.

One of the nonpartisan county-wideraces that will appear on all August bal-lots is the race for 19th Circuit CourtJudge, Group 4, Ms. Swan said.

Michael C. Heisey, a St. Lucie Countyattorney, and Steven Ziskinder, also a St.Lucie County attorney, are the two can-didates vying for the position. The termis for six years.

Bringing the ballot even closer tohome are the two Indian River SchoolDistrict races.

In District 1, incumbent Karen DisneyBrombach of Fellsmere is being chal-lenged for her seat by Shawn R. Frost ofVero Beach.

The District 4 seat is wide openbecause the sitting school board mem-ber, Carol Johnson, chose not to run foranother term.

Qualified candidates for the seatinclude Randy Heimler of Vero Beachand Charles G. Searcy of Vero Beach.

“This year, because there are only twocandidates for each seat, whoever wins

the primary will win the seat. If therewere more than two, there would be arunoff with the top two vote getters,”Ms. Swan said.

The school board District 2 seat wasalso scheduled to be up for election thisyear, but no one stepped up to chal-lenge Dale Simchick.

Ms. Simchick was appointed to theseat last year by Gov. Rick Scott after itwas left vacant by Jeff Pegler, who took ajob out of the county. Without a chal-lenger, Ms. Simchick will not berequired to be voted in on the ballot andwill automatically serve a full term, Ms.Swan said.

Registered voters may request absen-tee ballots for the primary election.Early voting will also be an option thisyear, with opportunities from Aug. 15 toAug. 23 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If voters are unsure of their precinctnumber and location, they can goonline to the Supervisor of Electionswebsite and use the “Find My Precinct”search option using their homeaddress, Ms. Swan said.

For example, trucks weighingbetween 3,000 pounds and 5,000pounds currently have a fee of$70.65. The new fee drops the costdown to $45.60, which is almost a 65percent decrease.

New purchases or registrationrenewals due prior to Sept. 1 will notqualify for the decrease this year andautomobile owners in that categoryare advised to only renew their regis-

tration tags for one year.“We actually removed the two year

renewal option off of the mailedreminders because people can stillpay it, but they will not be able to geta refund for the difference,” Ms.Bloom said.

Ms. Bloom said the tax collector’soffice send renewal reminders in themail one month or sometimes twomonths ahead of time.

While some people who are up forrenewal in September may feel theurge to quickly take care of thepaperwork and fee in August after

they receive the reminder, it’s actual-ly better to wait, she said.

The system that contains the feeschedules will not be updated toreflect the reduced fees until Sep-tember, so if people try to pay tooearly, they will still have to becharged the old fees, Ms. Bloom said.

The overall automobile tag fee isthe combination of a number oftaxes and fees and some of thosetaxes and fees were reduced, leadingto the dramatic overall fee reductionfor many vehicles, Ms. Bloom said.

The majority of the reduction

came from the annual registrationallotment line item, but some otherline items were decreased as well, soeveryone should see at least a smalldecrease after Sept. 1.

Trucks weighing more than 5,000pounds, mobile homes, vessels andother vehicles are not included inthe large tax cut, but they will stillsee a slight reduction in fees, about$4.50, Ms. Bloom said.

Why is Social Security beingcalled an entitlement?

I have worked and contributed, ashas my employer, for 50 years into thisprogram. It is my money. Why is it thatwhen I lose my job, after paying intounemployment insurance, as has myemployer, my unemployment benefitsrun out after a certain time period?

Meanwhile, we have people collect-ing welfare forever, who never con-tributed a single dime to this fund;and, if they have children, they collectmore money.

Yet, I am supposed to survive onunemployment insurance of a fixedamount, whether or not I have familyto support?

Maybe I just don’t get it, but is theresomething wrong with this picture?

Something to think aboutSocial Security is not funded by the

government, we pay into it ourselves. Iagree by all means if someone dies,“the named survivor” should receivethe Social Security benefits.

Social Security is not an entitlementprogram: and it is fully funded for thenext 25 years.

Source: http://www.strengthenso-c i a l s e c u r i t y. o r g / m e d i a / p r e s s -release/overall-social-security-pro-gram-is-fully-funded-for-25-years-despite-recent-stor.

So, when you vote, carefully find outif the person you are voting for feelsthis way. If they do, they probably alsofeel the average food stamp budgetnow at $31 a week is too much – toomuch to feed kids who go to schoolhungry every day, to feed a veteran, who is down on his luck.

And if anyone suggests having afinancial institution manage SocialSecurity instead, please go running forthe hills.

Tire store tried to rob meI have a witness that a tire business

tried to rob me.I had a flat tire with road hazard cov-

erage. When the man took off the flat,he then began to squeeze the tubewhere the brake fluid is, and then thefluid began to squirt out. Both myselfand another person saw this.

This man then comes to me and saysthat my fluid is puking out, and thenthat is when my witness and myselftold him what we saw.

They were going to try to rip me off,by having me spend more then what Ineeded, and that is wrong.

Beware of this tire company. This should be printed for my wit-

ness can, and will, verify everythingthat I have wrote.

No store card, no discounts

I was checking out of the grocerystore, when I realized I didn’t havethe store loyalty card with me.

There was no way I was purchasinga single item without the discountsthe card provides. I thought aboutwalking out of the store and lettingsome poor clerk re-shelve all myitems, until the cashier asked thecustomer behind me if she could useher card for my items.

I thanked the customer for usingtheir card. But I couldn’t shake myembarrassment.

Why does any store have theseannoying cards at all? What’s the pur-pose?

I gave up my personal informationto obtain the card, but what benefitdid I really receive in return? Would-n’t swiping my credit card give themall the personal information theyneed?

Why don’t they just lower theirprices for everybody with or withoutthe card? Then I remembered thatmany other stores don’t have loyaltycards, and their prices are almostalways lower than similar stores thathave the cards.

So, why do these have them?I won’t be embarrassed again. I’ve

shredded all my loyalty cards. Mywallet is much thinner now.

While I’m ranting about stores, why do some stores prevent anybodyfrom entering their stores without apaid membership card?

What they’re really doing is charg-ing customers to enter their store.

In this awful economy, why wouldany for-profit business restrict thenumber of customers they letthrough their doors?

The police can make thesepeople driving correctly

It is time to get more police out onthe streets to stop these drivers fromthe way they drive.

Many of these drivers are not usingtheir signals and they do not know howto stop at the stop sign. When you areturning, you must use your signals;when you are changing lanes you mustuse your signals. When you come to astop sign, do not pass the sign andthen stop; you must stop to that thesign is in front of your car or whateveryou are driving. I really believe that if alot of drivers were to do their driverstest again, they would fail. So get thosepolice out there and stop these drivers.

BusinessBattery backups can be a lifesaver

SEBASTIAN — Thunderstorms are apart of Florida’s landscape, and technol-ogy is part of modern culture, but thetwo constants don’t co-exist very well.

Especially now during the hurricaneand rainy season, major electronics, including computers, should definitelybe connected to a battery backup sys-tem, said Becki Martin, computer sup-port specialist at Computer Healthcarein Sebastian.

Since 2004, Tony Galentine and hisstaff at Computer Healthcare haveoffered top-notch technical services toSebastian and the surrounding area, ranging from computer diagnosis toinstalling Wi-Fi hot spots and everythingin between.

“Some people think when they plug intheir computer to a power strip, they areprotected from a power outage, butthat’s not how it works,” Ms. Martin said.

“What you really need is a batteryback-up, an uninterrupted power sup-ply. If the power goes out, or even if thereis a power bump, it’s dinging your harddrive a little bit.

“Over time, those dings will become afailed hard drive, or one day, your com-puter will just not turn on,” Ms. Martinsaid.

The custom computers built by thetechnicians at Computer Healthcaremust be purchased with a battery back-up system to have a valid warranty, butthey also carry the equipment availablefor purchase for general store customers, she said.

Computer Healthcare in Sebastian is agreat resource for instruction and repairfor both residential homes and businessowners.

The company is focusing on localbusinesses and demonstrating how theycan help companies, such as doctor’soffices, convert files to digital records, orto verify that a business’s network issecure from data breeches, Ms. Martinsaid.

“We can monitor the systems remote-ly, and we have someone on-call 24hours a day, seven days a week, in casethey need something,” she said.

A newer element of Computer Health-care’s daily offering to the community isa learning center where individuals cancome for one-on-one or group classes toeducate themselves on how to use theirelectronic device, whether it be a laptopcomputer, smartphone, tablet or a Kin-dle.

“We do Mac and Windows operatingsystems,” Ms. Martin said.

Customers can bring their owndevices into the shop for hands-on train-ing, so that when they go home to use

the device on their own, they alreadyhave some experience navigating with it.

One of the top computer repair issuesthat people come in with is virus-related.

One wrong click can give maliciouspeople access to important and even

confidential information stored on acomputer, Ms. Martin said.

A recent scam that has been croppingup in the county has people claiming tobe employed by Microsoft saying a per-

they are looking for there, the responseis usually “I don’t have that.”

Then (after realizing that maybe theyshould have whatever it is they can’tfind), they will broaden the search a bit, move their eyes around and locatewhat they were missing.

If you are having trouble findingthings on your desktop, pay attentionto where your eyes go when a windowpops open. If you see that you tend tofocus your view to a small area in thecenter of the window, try shifting yourview to the top left of the screen andwork your way to the lower right

through the center of the window. Thiswill usually allow you to see what’s whatin any given window in the order ofimportance.

By the time you get to the lower rightportion of the window, you will typical-ly have enough information to com-plete whatever it is you are trying to do.

Have I lost you? Let’s look at itanother way.

When someone hands you a piece ofpaper or you open a page in a book, where do your eyes go?

Well, they certainly don’t hoveraround the center of the page (or atleast they shouldn’t).

In Western civilization, we beginreading from the top left and work ourway to the lower right. If we were to justfocus on the center of the page, wewould end up just reading a smallchunk of what’s written and miss thebeginning and end. Without thinking,we know to start at the top left of thepage and, working from left to right, line by line, move our way down the

page.We need to develop the same habit

when we are using the computerbecause the same rules tend to apply.

Starting in the middle of the screenand then wandering around with oureyes will leave us feeling lost and out ofcontrol, and we will most certainlymiss something.

Instead, try this: Every time awindow opens, start at the top leftcorner of the window and, movingfrom left to right and then slowly downthe screen, you will find that mostwindows have been constructed in alogical order.

When we look at the top left cornerof any given window, we will usuallysee an icon representing whateverprogram is running, followed by thetitle bar.

These are good things to know: thename (and icon) of the programrunning and its title.

The next line down that we mayencounter is a line of pull-down

menus. The pull-down menus arewhere we can find all the controls andcommands that are available withinthat particular window grouped again,in logical sections.

All of the filing-related commandsare grouped under file, all the editingcommands are grouped under edit andso on, with the final pull-down menuusually being help.

They arranged it in this way so that ifpeople don’t find what they are lookingfor by going through each menu fromleft to right, they can look in the helpmenu as a last resort.

However, all programs are different;you won’t see all of the items listedabove in every window.

The point I’m trying illustrate is tostart from the top left, and usually youcan find whatever it is you are lookingfor.

sonal computer in the home or businesshas a problem, she said.

Unsuspecting computer users believethe scam and allow the caller to remotelyaccess their system, and once they real-ize it was a scam, the damage has alreadybeen done, Ms. Martin said.

Identity theft is a definite possibility inthose types of circumstances, she said.

“When they call us, we tell them to dis-connect the Internet and unplug themachine and bring it in to us so we cantry to fix it,” Ms. Martin said.

There are many things that can gowrong with computers and that is whybacking up files is something ComputerHealthcare staff stresses to their clients.

“We offer backup solutions, both in-house and off-site. We can even go inand set up your computer so that itbacks up your files automatically on acertain day and time of the month,” Ms.Martin said.

Tech support and computer repairtechnicians with Computer Healthcaredon’t work on commission and can dedi-cate time to get the issue worked outproperly. In addition, before the device isgiven back to the customer, the staffwork hard to put the files, the folders, even the background images, exactlyhow the customer had it.

Community theater presents ‘The Mikado’

VERO BEACH — The Vero BeachTheatre Guild will once again call onthe works of the famed Gilbert andSullivan for a summer fundraiser pro-duction.

From July 17 through July 27, thelocal community theater will present“The Mikado,” a comedic operettawritten by William Gilbert and ArthurSullivan in 1885, perhaps the duo’smost popular work, said Mark Wygo-nik, show director.

“This show is set in Japan and it’s alot of silliness and a lot of fun,” MrWygonik said.

“The Mikado” tells a story of forbid-den love, disguised identities, vengeance, violence, and although it isset in Japan, pokes fun at British socie-ty in Gilbert and Sullivan’s time.

Jay Wiggins will play Nanki-Poo, oneof the male leads, Dana Rogers willtake on the role of Yum-Yum, his loveinterest, and Scott Freshley landed therole of the illustrious ruler, the Mika-do.

The costuming and the sets for thisproduction is very important for thelegacy of this show, so volunteers haveworked incredibly hard to create col-orful and exuberant pieces to enhancethe storyline, Mr. Wygonik said.

While some productions of the showtake great liberties with the script andthe time period of the story, the VeroBeach Theatre Guild will stick fairlyclose to the original storyline withonly a few exceptions.

“It’s a musical, and with most musi-cals, you’re not supposed to changethe lyrics, but with this show it’s a littledifferent. Everyone that produces theshow takes some of the lyrics andupdates them to be relevant to theirtime period and area, for exampleincluding references to political fig-ures or pop stars,” Mr. Wygonik said.

Show times are 7 p.m. on selectdates between July 17 and July 27, withtwo matinee performances at 2 p.m.on July 20 and July 27.

A ticket to the show is $25, except forthe July 19 performance, said LeighAnn Dunleavy, guild publicity chair-woman.

On July 19, the evening will begin at5 p.m. with Japanese drummers fromSouth Florida, sushi prepared by chefsfrom KATA and SAKE restaurants anddesserts from Patisserie.

“We will have a silent auction andsamurai warriors performing outside. It’s going to be a great night,” Mr.Wygonik said.

Tickets are $100 per adult.“Last year, we raised $15,000 during

the fundraiser. We’re hoping to do thatwell or better this year,” Mr. Wygoniksaid.

On July 26, the theme will be Japan-ese anime and theater-goers are invit-ed to dress in costume and participate

in a costume contest to win prizes. As this production is a fundraiser for

the guild, the funds are going towardthe guild’s capital campaign to con-struct and outfit a three-story additionto the organization’s current facilities.

The new space will give guild mem-bers rehearsal space, costume andprop storage and dressing rooms, allof which are greatly needed, Mr.Wygonik said.

The Vero Beach Theatre Guild islocated at 2020 San Juan Ave., VeroBeach. For tickets or more information, call (772) 562-8300 or visit www.ver-obeachtheatreguild.com.

A cast of 28communitythespians willbring VeroBeach TheatreGuild’sproduction of“The Mikado”to life fromJuly 17 to July27.

DINING & ENTERTAINMENT

The Saracco’s have owned otherrestaurants and they knew that thebiggest draws were the pizza, wingsand sports.

“We are very family oriented,” saidJoey Saracco, who has been cleaningtables at family businesses since hewas five. Now he is learning the busi-ness inside and out. “We also know thewings, the pizza and burgers are thebest in town.”

We were quickly sat and greeted byour server, Kristen, who was attentiveand friendly the entire night.

My guest and I ordered sweet tea andwere treated to a sampling of each ofthe dozen or so appetizers that therestaurant has created.

We were treated to onion rings, corndogs, jalapeno poppers with cheddarcheese, stuffed mushrooms, fries, shrimp, fried clams and more.

The onion rings were large, deliciousand lightly battered. They were quicklyeaten and while my companion movedonto the poppers, I had a chicken stripand then ate a few of the clam strips.

We were soon delivered the chickenwings. I ordered the garlic parmesanwhile my companion ordered thehoney barbeque.

The wings were well cooked, hefty insize and the best wings that I have hadin awhile.

In case we had any room left afterthe sheer bounty of food we were pre-sented with, we were also treated to ameat lovers pizza, a recommendationfrom the family.

This pizza was a masterpiece. If youlike hunks of meat from meatballs, sausage, ham and beef, look no fur-ther. The pizza is piled high and the

pizza sauce, specially crafted by Tony, was delectable.

The delightful meal was only accen-tuated by the wonderful service wereceived.

Monday through Thursday, childreneat free with a purchase of a soda andother various deals. They can alsoreceive baseball cards while dining.

The Pizza Pie and Wing Company islocated at 1451 Sebastian Blvd., Sebas-tian.
