Game me at the Ed- ward Jones Dome has been changed to 7 p.m. ET, from 8 p.m. The Ravens take a 2-1 record into the contest aſter last Thursday’s (8/23) 48-17 victory over the vising Jaguars. The Rams, under new head coach Jeff Fisher, took a 1-1 mark into Saturday night’s game at Dallas. • In the Ravens’ three preseason games, QB Joe Flacco completed 43 of 60 passes for 433 yards, with 3 TDs and 1 INT for a 101.6 QB rang. John Harbaugh, the only head coach in NFL history to take his team to and win at least one playoff game in each of his first four seasons, is in his fiſth year as the Ravens’ head coach. The pressure builds on the players, especially the young ones and some veterans, who are fighng to make the Ravens. It’s tense. They want to be part of this, and if they can’t be, they want to show on film that they can help another team. For some, the last preseason game will determine whether they belong in the NFL or not.” OLB Terrell Suggs (Achilles), the 2011 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and WR David Reed (knee) are on the PUP list. The following players did not play against the Jaguars last Thursday because of in- jury: LB Darryl Blackstock (groin), LB Josh Bynes (back), TE Ed Dick- son (shoulder), DT Ryan McBean (leg), TE Dennis Pia (hand), T/G Jah Reid (calf) and G Marshal Yanda (knee). What is the most spontaneous thing you’ve done? “One summer, when I was 15, we were in Germany for my uncle’s wedding, and we spontaneously decided to tour Europe. We went to Paris and Holland. That was

pretty spontaneous, because my dad started booking the tickets randomly, so we randomly started doing stuff.”

Where else have you traveled? “Holland, Paris, Canada. Germany is the farthest place I have ever been, in addition to Nigeria and places within Africa. I’ve probably been there eight or nine times.”

What does your first name mean? “‘Thank God.’ I have three sis-ters, and it’s a pretty big deal in the Nigerian culture to have a son carry on your name, and my mom and dad were praying for it. They wanted to name their son that, because they wanted to thank God every time they said my name. My family is pretty religious, so that’s why they gave me that name.”

Is there a certain story that really sticks out from one of your trips to Nigeria? “The majority of my family is there; my immediate fam-ily is in America. One story that sticks out is I brought my Nintendo GameCube there when I was younger. My little cousin was blown away by the graphics; he thought they were real, that you were controlling real people. When I was leaving, he started crying be-cause he wanted me to leave it there, so I did. It was probably the happiest thing that had ever happened to him. That really stood out because of how big of a deal it was to him.”

Does your family in Nigeria understand the concept of the NFL? “They have no idea. They don’t really understand. They don’t speak a lot of English. Soccer is what is big to them. My mom just tells them that I’m doing well, and that’s all they really care about. There’s too much of a barrier.”

Who on this team do you look up to? “Marshal Yanda, just be-cause of the type of guy that he is. He is really similar to a lot of the guys back at Iowa State who I played with. He’s stayed humble, and I aspire to be the same way when I get to where he is.”

ESPN.com’s Jamison Hensley on John Harbaugh:“Harbaugh’s greatest strengths as a coach are his attention to de-tail, motivation and focus, all of which are vital after an offseason like this one. Walk the halls of Ravens headquarters, and you’ll see one of Harbaugh’s favorite slogans throughout the building: W.I.N. (What’s Important Now). ‘You try to take care of business today, what’s important right now,’ Harbaugh said. ‘Today, let’s do our job, and then the future takes care of itself. That’s how it applies.’”

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora on QB Joe Flacco:“This will be Joe Flacco’s year. Everyone in the Ravens’ organiza-tion senses it and have since back in spring practices. This has become his football team. He is taking command of Baltimore’s offense, and, since the early stages of the offseason, any time I brought up his name to a coach or teammate, the reaction was roughly the same: The days of Flacco being a talk‐radio whipping boy, or subject of national debate, were over. He is evolving into an elite quarterback.”

FB Vonta Leach on WR Torrey Smith:“Torrey’s potential is through the roof, first of all. He’s quiet, he works hard all the time, and he’s well‐respected. He has blazing speed, but he listens and takes coaching well. He’s got a chance to be one of the great receivers. He reminds me of a Donald Driv-er, because he’s smooth. He’s faster than Andre [Johnson], but not as big as him. And he reminds me of Kevin Walter, because they both work really hard.”

LB Jameel McClain on the Ravens’ preseason defense:“The goal is to go out there and make plays regardless, no matter what game it is. Whether it’s the last preseason game, the first preseason game, or the third, we want to go out there and be competitive and show our style of defense.”

Rookie RB Bernard Pierce on the competition to serve as RB Ray Rice’s primary backup:“It’s still an open competition. We’ll be fighting for that No. 2, honestly, all year. I don’t think it’s something that will be won in the preseason. We have a group of good backs who complement each other. Somebody could be the No. 2 one week, and it could be somebody else another week. At the end of the day, we’re go-ing to produce, and we’re hungry.”

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport on what the Ravens look for when they scout college prospects:“The Ravens scout passion. As Newsome told me, while watching tape, they take their eye off the ball and watch how players move when they are not involved in a play, and they learn whether a guy is going through the motions or just lives it. For those with supreme passion, they can compromise on height‐weight‐speed standards.”

Rookie free agent K Justin Tucker on the evolution of his kicking during the 2012 training camp:“I really do feel like I’m kicking the best I’ve ever kicked, and that’s a big testament to what coach [Jerry] Rosburg and coach [John] Harbaugh and [kicking consultant] Randy Brown have been able to do with me since I’ve been here. To the naked eye, it doesn’t look like I’ve made a lot of changes, but I’ve made a complete transformation from the kicker that I was in school to the kicker I am now. I owe a lot of my recent successes to them, because they’ve been on me about getting better at something every single day.” Patriots owner Robert Kraft on Steve Bisciotti: “He’s one of my favorite guys. He’s just a class act. He and I think alike on most issues. He’s a straight shooter. He’s a great owner. Ravens fans should be very happy they have him as an owner.” Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome on QB Tyrod Taylor: “He has unbelievable poise, he has great accuracy, and he’s an outstanding leader in the huddle, in the meeting rooms. Every-thing you would want from a quarterback, from a guy that hasn’t played [much in the regular season], Tyrod has it. Now he has to get on the field and prove that he can play. But all the intan-gibles, everything else that you would expect a quarterback to have, other than being 6‐4, Tyrod has it.”

C Matt Birk on the goal of reaching the Super Bowl: “Obviously, that’s our goal, but that’s a long way away right now. I think that the older guys, or the guys that have been around here, understand what it takes just to get to that level to have a chance. So, you can talk about climbing the mountain or what-ever analogy that you want to use, but that’s a long way away. Right now in August, it’s just important that we come out here and work as hard as we can every single day physically, but also mentally in the meeting rooms.”

“He’s a great judge of talent. He recognizes how talent fits into the scheme that they use on both sides of the ball. He’s able to use a great scouting staff to uncover terrific gems down in the lower part of the draft, and he understands – more than anything else – how to put to-gether a team, not just a group of 53 guys, but a team that works and functions together. He understands, because he was such a great player himself, the characteristics that a player has to have in order to contribute positively to a team. There’s a difference between judging talent and putting together a team, and Ozzie is as good as there is at that.”

- Former Colts GM Bill Polian on Ozzie Newsome

Entering his fifth year as head coach, John Harbaugh has led Baltimore to a playoff berth in each of his first four seasons (marking a franchise first with four-consecutive postseason berths). “Harbs” is the only head coach in NFL history to win a playoff game in each of his first four seasons. He has led the Ravens to 44 regular season wins during this span, ranking

fourth in the NFL, and he has guided the Ravens to two AFC Cham-pionship games (2008 & 2011). Harbs owns a 5-4 playoff record.

In his 2008 rookie campaign, the Ravens advanced to the AFC Championship game af-ter winning at Miami (27-9) and at top-seeded Tennessee, 13-10. Pittsburgh, the even-tual Super Bowl champion, stopped the Ravens, 23-14, in the AFC title matchup. In 2009, Baltimore dominated at New England, 33-14, in the Wild Card game before drop-ping a 20-3 contest at Super

Bowl-bound Indianapolis in the Divisional Round. After earning a 12-4 mark in 2010, the Ravens topped Kansas City (30-7) in the Wild Card playoff, becoming the only team to win at least one playoff game in each of the last three seasons. The Ravens then dropped a 31-24 Divisional Round contest at Pittsburgh, which ad-vanced to the Super Bowl.

During the Harbaugh Era (since 2008)...• Baltimore is the only NFL team to advance to the playoffs each of the last four years and the only team to have won at least one playoff game in each of those postseasons. • The Ravens own a 44-20 regular season record. Including playoffs (5-4), they are 49-24 in the Harbaugh Era, tying for third in the NFL in total wins since his Baltimore arrival.

Entering his fifth season as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator, Cam Cameron’s impact has been sig-nificant. In 2011, QB Joe Flacco produced his third-straight 3,500-yard/20-touchdown passing season, while RB Ray Rice led the NFL with 2,068 yards from scrimmage. In 2009, the Ravens were the NFL’s ninth

best in scoring (24.4 ppg), up from 24th in 2007, while setting team records for most total TDs (47) and most rushing TDs (22). In his first season in Baltimore (2008), Cameron built a creative offense that ranked fourth in the NFL in rushing (148.5 ypg), first in time of possession (33:10) and 11th in points per game (24.1 ppg).

Cameron brought his unique offensive mind to Baltimore after one year as the Miami Dolphins’ head coach. His successful stints with the NFL’s Chargers and Redskins and the NCAA’s Indiana Hoo-siers and Michigan Wolverines have been celebrated.

Under Cameron’s guidance the past four seasons (2008-11)...• The Ravens have rushed for 131.3 yards per game, fourth most in the NFL. Baltimore also has 68 rushing TDs, tying for fourth most.

• Baltimore has committed only 87 turnovers during this span, the NFL’s fourth fewest. (Ravens set a team record with just 20 give-aways in 2010 and posted a +2 turnover ratio in 2011.)

• The Ravens’ 23.6 points per game during this span rank ninth.

Dean Pees, a nine-year NFL-coaching veteran, was promoted to defensive coordinator on Jan. 27 after guiding the Ravens’ LBs for two seasons. He is the sixth “D” coordinator in franchise history. Pees, who was New England’s “D” coordinator from 2006-09, now leads the vaunted Baltimore unit, which has

finished as the NFL’s third-best scoring defense four-consecutive years (16.6 ppg in 2011). The four-straight years ties an NFL record for consecutive seasons of being in the Top 3 for points allowed.

Pees inherits a unit that during the John Harbaugh Era (2008-11)...• Has allowed the NFL’s second-fewest points (16.3) and the second-fewest net yards (292.3) per game during this span.

The Ravens’ “O” has been consistently effective since Cam Cam-eron took the reins in 2008. Over the past four seasons, Baltimore has ranked in the top half of the NFL in scoring each year, while in 2009, the Ravens posted the second-most yards in team history.

It can be argued that the 100 best NFL players, as voted by the players in 2011, doesn’t really represent the best. Maybe coaches or scouts have a different list. Certainly, there are reporters who compiled rankings of their own. Still, it’s special for the Ravens to post seven players overall (tied with Phi. and SF for the NFL’s most) – including five standouts in the Top 25.

OLB Terrell Suggs injured his Achilles this past spring and is working to return at some point during the 2012 season. Suggs, who was named the 2011 AP Defensive Player of the Year, posted three 3-sack games in 2011, finishing with a career-high 14 sacks on the year. Suggs also forced an NFL-high 7 fum-

bles, setting a career high and a Ravens’ single- season record. Suggs’ 14 sacks in 2011 ranked third in Ravens history and first in the AFC (also tying Aldon Smith for fifth in the NFL).

One of the NFL’s most disruptive forces, DT Haloti Ngata was named to his third Pro Bowl (as a starter) in 2011. Perhaps the NFL’s most athletic DT, Ngata stops the run (393 career tackles), rushes the passer (17 career sacks) and even drops into coverage (3 career INTs). In 2011, he had 64 tackles, 5 sacks (-21

yards), 3 FRs (1 returned for TD) and 2 FFs.

Baltimore has a history of strong run defense, and with Ngata’s help the past several seasons, has upheld its stout legacy on the ground.

RAVENS IN OUR COMMUNITY

BACK-TO-SCHOOL EVENTS

OPEN PRACTICE AT STEVENSON UNIVERSITY

Ravens C Matt Birk teamed up with Walmart of Rosedale, MD, on Aug. 18 to purchase and distribute school supplies to inner-city children. Through his HIKE Foundation (Hope Inspiration Knowledge Education), which Birk founded in 2002, 150 backpacks were filled with brand new school supplies prior to distribution to area students. Children and families had the opportunity to meet the Harvard graduate as they picked up their supplies. A father of six, Birk consistently emphasizes the importance of education to his own children and those he meets. He said, “Education is incredibly important to me, and through the generous support of Walmart, our hope is that we are removing an obstacle in the way of children learning.” Birk’s goal was to ensure that shopping for school supplies was one less thing for these parents to worry about with the approaching school year. Over $15,000 worth of school supplies were given away at the back-to-school event.

RB Ray Rice held a contest via his Facebook page asking his followers to nominate and vote for the best teacher they know. After receiving over 300 submissions in the first day, Rice posted the names of the top 10 teachers that were chosen, indicating that they were to receive school supplies for the entire academic year. On Aug. 15, Rice invited these 10 teachers, along with the guest or colleague that nominated them, to join him at the Under Armour Performance Center in Owings Mills to distribute these supplies. The teachers walked out to the practice field to see their names attached to their own large container filled with various supplies and classroom necessities, also accompanied by backpacks and a Ray Rice autographed Ravens mini-helmet. Rice also said a few words on the importance of the work these teachers do and thanked each one of them individually.

The Ravens flocked to Stevenson University in Owings Mills on Aug. 19 for the final training camp practice that was open to fans. Stevenson’s newly-built stadium and the day’s mild weather provided fans with an optimal training camp experience. A lottery was used to assign tickets to the winning fans who were interested in coming to the practice. Over 30,000 people applied through the Baltimore Ravens’ website, and 3,000 were selected. Admission was free of charge, but tickets were mandatory for entrance into the stadium due to the size of the venue. Over 1,000 children lined up at the conclusion of practice to receive autographs from the players, including S Ed Reed (below).
