Greetings from Jesse,

Official Summer is heading away, that can only mean that the Tri-State show is just around the

corner. We have some information regarding the upcoming Tri-State Show and our

October 12 meeting at John Vannatta's garage here in the newsletter.

The Tri-State show is always a nice end-of-summer activity that I plan on attending. Every-

thing seems to be in place for another year. We'll do parking, I'll have a schedule at "camp

stovebolt" or at the registration desk, depending upon the weather. Thanks to John Vannatta,

Gary Callis and Jim Ellett for showing up at the Tri-State meeting August 25.

Nelson Smith, Gary & Sally Callis and Patti & I went to the White Bash in Cranbury, NJ

August 22-23. The group toured Frank Maletesta's collection in Paterson and Gary Mahan's

restoration shop and collection in Basking Ridge. Gary and I took trucks to the truck show at

Campbell Freightliner on Saturday. Each collection was impressive in its own way. Frank is

trying to corner the market on toys and Gary is doing the same with full-sized Mack trucks.

The August 17 picnic was probably our best turn-out in quite a while. We had lots of trucks to

view and lots of things to talk about. Great time and no rain. Thanks Jennifer and Billy for

hosting us again for such a great day.

I went to six or seven shows here on the shore this summer. Mike Botler brought his fire truck

to the Cripple Creek Country Club's first car show Saturday Sept. 6. I had my 1978 Ford there.

Mike should get a "longest distance" award.

We had a good showing at Carlisle All Trucks on August 1 and 2. Dave Schroyer and Chuck

Gamber both won trophies at the judged event part of the show. You had to see Dave's 53 foot

Landoll trailer to believe it. Polished stainless steel frame outlined with blue LED lights.

The next day, Sunday August 3, I was truly impressed by the turnout for Joey Wilson's view-

ing. Joey's 1928 Reo Flying Cloud sedan was parked proudly in front of the funeral home.

The next ATHS Board meeting will be in York, Saturday, October 11, at the site of the 2015

National Convention and Truck Show. All ATHS members are welcome to attend. There will

be committee meetings on Friday and the Board meeting Saturday morning. A chance to see

the organization at work.

I sure hope to see everyone at Tri-State show in September. I have always enjoyed that show.

My 2006 T-shirt is almost worn out.

Minutes of B-W Chapter Meeting

August 17, 2014

The meeting was held in conjunction with the Chapter’s annual summer picnic hosted by Billy & Jennifer

Marlow. The meeting was called to order at 2:30PM by President Jesse Walter.

Treasurer’s Report President Walter stated that there would not be a Treasurer’s report as the Treasurer was unable to attend the

meeting and no report was forwarded to him.

Membership Report The membership report was presented by Dane Badman for Carolyn Vannatta who was unable to attend.

We currently have 88 members registered with B-W chapter. Several members have been dropped from the chapter

due to being dropped by National ATHS for non-payment of National dues. Remember you must be a member of

National ($45 per year) in order to join a local chapter.

President Walter asked all in attendance to have a moment of silence in memory of member Joey Wilson

who passed on July 29, 2014. After the moment of silence Dane Badman also reminded the members that we often

find out too late that one of our members have passed as happened with member John Cook who passed in 2013 and

the chapter was not notified till 2014 of his passing. Dane also asked about the possibility of the chapter using

membership cards or sending out post card notices to B-W members to remind them when their chapter dues are

about to expire. National ATHS sends members a reminder to renew their National dues via mail.

President’s Report President Walter reported that about 25 antique trucks were registered at the All-Truck Nationals Show in

Carlisle, PA. Members of B-W chapter, Susquehanna Valley chapter, Mason-Dixon chapter and Metro Jersey chap-

ter volunteered their time to staff the ATHS National table which included signing up new ATHS memberships and

passing out copies of WOT magazine and answering questions from interested persons. Also on display was a pro-

motional advertisement of the 2015 ATHS National Australia trip.

Our Baltimore-Washington Chapter has been recognized by ATHS National for having been a chapter for

30 years. Jesse also reported that Executive Director Bill Johnson has resigned his position at ATHS.

The next Tri-State truck show committee meeting will be on August 24, 2014. The Baltimore-Washington

chapter will again handle parking at the Tri-State show this year.

President Walter presented gavel plaques to former Presidents Mike Boteler and John Milliman for their

service to the club.

National Convention Report Regional Vice President Mel Fair, Jr. gave a report on the upcoming 2015 National Convention and Show

that will be held in York, PA. He stated that ATHS will have the total use of the fairgrounds for the show. Shenan-

doah Valley ATHS will be doing the wheel chocks, Mason-Dixon has agreed to supervise the unloading area, Balti-

more-Washington ATHS will do parking of the show trucks, Metro Jersey will also be participating at the conven-

tion. Mel stated that the National BOD will hold it’s Fall meeting in October 10-12 at the Sheraton Four Points ho-

tel. Committee meetings will be on Oct. 10, with the BOD meeting on the 11th. ATHS members are invited to

attend, it was suggested that the local chapters should finalize their plans prior to the October meetings.

New Business

President Jesse Walter asked the members present for a volunteer to serve on the Nominating Committee for the

purpose of preparing a slate of candidates for Club officers. Mike Boteler and Andy McWilliams agreed to serve as

committee members and make phone calls to prospective candidates.

The Southern Maryland Antique Power Association will hold it’s annual Tractor/Truck parade on October 12,

2014 in Leonardtown, MD. B-W chapter members are asked to bring their trucks for participation in the parade. Fol-

lowing the parade, B-W ATHS will hold a chapter meeting at John Vannatta’s garage, lunch fixin’s will be provided,

bring your folding chair.

Mike Botler reported that discussions were being held with BMI about the possibility of painting the “Food

Truck” in the wall of the museum. It may be a difficult job to accomplish due to the truck being half inside and half

outside of the wall.

Newsletter Report

Dane Badman gave a report on the chapter’s newsletter. Having received a $500.00 advance for printing and

postage from the chapter, he reported that after 3 issues having been printed so far this year, the advance money is about

used up with two more issues still to be printed. Currently 100 copies are being printed to cover mailing to members

and exchange with other chapters. FedEx Printing has increased printing costs and postage went up in 2014. At this

time less than two dozen members receive the newsletter via email, it would drastically reduce the cost if more members

would get the DRIVELINE news by email, there are only a few who don’t have computers and would require a printed

version. After having some discussion it was decided that Dane and Jesse would have a recommendation by the next

chapter meeting about converting to digital newsletter. In any event, Dane and Frances Badman will retire from being

editors of the DRIVELINE after the 2015 convention is held in May 2015 or sooner!

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by John Milliman and seconded by Dane Badman.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:25 PM.

Other Club News

In early August, several of our members participated at the All-Truck Nationals show up in Carlisle, PA.

ATHS National had a display area and information table staffed by volunteers from the Tri-State, New Jersey and Ohio

Chapters. With about 25 antique trucks on display for public viewing, several new ATHS memberships were registered

and a half dozen or so trial memberships were applied for. Informational posters and bumper stickers were on hand to

promote the 2015 National ATHS convention & show in York, PA. Thanks to all who participated in this effort to bring

ATHS to the public. ATHS headquarters may decide to participate in future All-Truck National shows at Carlisle.

Our chapter held their annual Summer Picnic hosted by Bill & Jennifer Marlow at their home. A good turnout

of 40 members and guests enjoyed a sunny afternoon with plenty of burgers, hot dogs and assorted side dishes. A busi-

ness meeting was conducted after the picnic lunch. Former Chapter Presidents Mike Boteler and John Milliman were

recognized by current President Jesse Walter who presented gavel plaques to both. ATHS National BOD meeting will

take place on October 10-11th at the Sheraton Four Points hotel in York, PA. See John Vannatta’s comments in the

News from National column for further details on this important meeting. On October 12, 2014 the chapter members

are invited to participate with their trucks in the Southern Maryland Antique Power Association’s annual parade in

Leonardtown, MD . The parade starts at 1 PM and will be followed by a B-W chapter meeting at John Vannatta’s

garage (see events calendar for details). John Vannatta said he is in need of volunteer drivers for his numerous trucks so

that they can be driven in the parade.

Regional Chapter News

Regional Chapter News

ATHS Mason-Dixon Chapter…The chapter members were informed of the passing of long time members Joey Wilson

and Richard Randolph. Chapter Editor Allen Fisher noted that Joey liked REO, Diamond T and Detroit Diesels. Richard liked

all kinds of trucks, but his best times were behind the wheel of his red IH Emeryville. At the club’s last meeting a large gathering

was on hand to witness RVP Mel Fair Jr. present the ATHS Golden Achievement Award to his father Mel Fair Sr., Mel’s sister

and brother were also on hand for the presentation to their father. The chapter noted that on Thursday, September 25 they will

hold their Mason-Dixon Dinner around 5 PM at the Tri-State show. The Ruritan Dinner will be on Friday, Sept. 26 at 5

PM with Chicken, Cole slaw, mixed veggies, Dessert, Ice Tea and water. Tickets are $12.00. Congratulations to Allen

Fisher are in order as his Ford F1100 was chosen to be on the cover of True Blue Ford Trucks magazine. It is rumored that Allen

will be signing autographs at the Tri-State show, BYOC (bring your own copy). Sympathies were extended to Allen Fisher on

the recent loss on August 15th of his “Best Friend” Maggie, the Australian Cattle dog, they had 12 years of friendship since he

brought the pup home.

ATHS Susquehanna Valley Chapter…Members of the chapter were informed of the passing of member Ray K. Fuhrman

in July, Ray had a 61 year trucking career dating back to 1952, he was also a talented mechanic. The chapter made a $50.00 do-

nation to the Grace Brethren Church in Elizabethtown in the name of Ray Fuhrman. Members of the chapter hosted their annual

truck show at Kenworth of PA in Carlisle on August 23rd. The chapter reports they have T-shirts for 2015 York ATHS Show

for sale at $15.00 each, contact Tim Kauffman (717) 341-9072 if interested in purchasing one. The chapter also needs volunteers

to help at the Convention /Show in 2015. If you can help in any way, please contact Marlin Ruhl (717) 665-4261. The chapter is

also taking orders for T-shirts honoring the late Carl Ellerman. Carl was the main driving force behind getting the SVC chapter

started, and was the first President of the Susquehanna Valley ATHS chapter.

ATHS DELMARVA Chapter…Members of the chapter just hosted a show on September 13th at Powellville United

Methodist Church in Powellville, MD. We hope they had a good turnout for their event, there are many shows all over the East-

ern Shore area every weekend. Some of the members will probably be planning to attend the 13th Annual ATCA Eastern Shore

chapter show at the Redman’s Lodge, Fruitville, MD on October 11th. This show is usually one of the last truck events for the

season over on the Eastern shore.

ATHS Shenandoah Valley Chapter...The chapter’s 24th Annual Truck & Tractor show was held back in May and one for the

record book, with wonderful weather and a nice turn out of 66 vehicles. There was a wide range of beautiful and interesting vehi-

cles on display. Many wonderful door prizes left the winners very appreciative. The chapter thanks their many sponsors for the

donated items for the door prizes. The chapter was saddened when they learned of the passing of their long time friend and fel-

low chapter member Donald “Don” Lee Hien on August 27th. Don’s memorial service was held on September 2, 2014 at

Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel. Military Rites were conducted at the cemetery by the Hillsville V.F.W. Post 1115. In lieu of

flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, ATTN: Relay for Life of Galax-Carroll, VA., PO Box 246

Abington, VA 24212. The Shenandoah County Fair was held the week of August 22-30th and President Scott Shifflett was con-

tacted about the possibility of members displaying some antique trucks on Wednesday the 17th. Country singer Trace Adkins

was the headline performer on Wednesday night as well. You can’t ask for a better combination for entertainment than Country

Western music and “old trucks” on a hot August night! Chapter members are preparing for the Tri-State show in September and

of course by now the sawdust has been flying & the branding iron is kept hot producing the wheel chocks for the 2015 ATHS

National Convention. At the Tri-State show in September, the Shenandoah Valley Chapter will hold their dinner on Satur-

day evening the 27th at 6:30 PM followed by a review of the weekend show. It is hoped the show will produce a good

number of registered trucks despite the fact that Mack Trucks has decided to move their “Trucktoberfest” event from October to

the same weekend as the Tri-State show.

Volunteer Help at Tri-State Show...As usual at the Tri-State show, volunteers are always needed to help with the various

chores such as, Registration, T-Shirt sales, parking spectator cars, parking trucks, manning the entrance gate to collect donations

and various other activities that take place behind the scenes “under cover of darkness” trash collection comes to mind! The time

worn motto of the “Boy Scouts of America” comes into play here, BE PREPARED, DO YOUR BEST, DO YOUR DUTY, when

it comes time to lending a helping hand at this and any other events that you might attend, it makes for good times & fellowship.

2015 ATHS York Convention

With the 2014 convention behind us and highly successful, we are focusing on York. The B-W Chapter will

have a key part in next year’s event assuming the responsibility for show truck parking. Mike Boteler has graciously

offered to chair that effort but will need all of our help in handling it well. East Coast shows have become large events

and we will need to be organized. With the transition in Kansas City regarding Executive Directors, the staff will be

looking to the supporting chapters to be organized and carry out their duties as well as possible. Please consider volun-

teering your time. We have been through this before and our chapter is recognized for getting the job done.

ATHS BOD Fall Meeting

The weekend of October 10-12 will be a busy one. The York convention committee will meet at 8AM on Friday

the 10th with the full board meeting Saturday at 8:30 AM at the Sheraton Four Points in York, 1650 Toronita St. (little

side street off Rt. 30 at the intersection of Rt. 30 & I-83) York, PA 17402 (717) 846-4940. If you wish to reserve a room

for this weekend a reservation must be made no later than Sept. 23, 2014. A block of rooms are reserved under ATHS

and the cost is $95 for a room. All ATHS members are welcome to attend BOD meetings.

B-W chapter members will end the weekend on Sunday, October 12th joining with members of the Southern

Maryland Antique Power Association for their annual Leonardtown Tractor and Truck Parade. Following the parade we

will have a B-W chapter meeting at my garage. Please try to attend at least the board meeting on Saturday and it would

be nice to have a good turnout of trucks for the parade on Sunday. We will provide sandwich fixings and drinks, B-W

members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert. A good turnout in York will show enthusiasm for the show and a

message to the board that the show has support.

The search for a new Executive Director for the Society is moving along. We have more than 25 applications

and interviews will take place shortly. I have hope that we might have someone to introduce in York.
