Bamboo for the 21st Century 2nd Workshop on
Building High-end Structures in Bamboo 25th February to 3rd March 2005Botanical Garden, Kohima, India
GOVERNMENT
OF NAGALAND
INTRODUCTION Bamboo is an extremely versatile material that has been traditionally for
construction. The lack of technological development and the perception of
bamboo as a “poor man's timber” has hindered its use on a large scale. Recent
technological developments in the area of construction and advances in
treatment methods now allow large span, durable construction in bamboo
allowing it to be used in numerous high-end applications.
In order to promote high-end construction in bamboo the National Mission
on Bamboo Applications (NMBA) and Pradeep Sachdeva Design Associates
had orgainsed the first “Workshop on Building High-end Structures in
Bamboo” at the TERI Campus in September 2004. The workshop was
conducted by Simon Velez, architect from Colombia and expert in high-end
construction in bamboo.
A second workshop conducted by Simon Velez was held at the Botanical th ndGarden, Kohima between the 25 February and 2 March 2005. Jointly
organised by the NMBA, Government of Nagaland and Pradeep Sachdeva
Design Associates.
32 participants from different parts of the country worked with a team of 15
workers of the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency over six days,
building a demonstration structure at the Botanical Garden, Kohima.

structures at 'The Garden of Five Senses', New Delhi.
Addressing the participants Mr Jayant Madhav appreciated the work being
done by the Government of Nagaland. He also commended the participants
on the work achieved during the workshop.
Mr. Vinay Oberoi, advisor NMBA briefly spoke about the organisation and it's
work in the development of the bamboo sector. Elaborating on the
organisation's work in Nagaland, he spoke of the 900 ton capacity bamboo
shoot processing unit that had recently been set-up at Dimapur
In his speech H.E Shyamal Datta, Governor of Nagaland, said that the
workshop was a curtain raiser to the State Government's new policies. He
emphasised that the bamboo sector has a tremendous scope in generating
employment and revive the rural economy, but this would only be possible
through an integrated approach that addresses expertise, skill development,
production and marketing.
The ceremony concluded with Mr. Alemtemshi Jamir giving the vote of
thanks.
The first workshop at TERI, near Delhi served as an introduction to high-end
construction in bamboo. The second workshop in Nagaland has taken this a
step further and the participants now have a more holistic understanding of
the subject. The workshops though will only have a long term impact if there
are opportunities to build such structures and more importantly only if a
sufficient number of trained workforce is available. The next step should
therefore be the actual construction of the demo-structures at 'The Garden
of Five Senses' New Delhi. Workers from different parts of the country could
be trained during the construction of these structures. This would also create
a wider base of skilled labour spread across the country.

NATIONAL MISSION
ON BAMBOO
APPLICATIONS
(NMBA)
The National Mission on Bamboo Applications (NMBA) is an initiative of the
Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India. It is
implemented by the Technology, Information, Forecasting and Assessment
Council (TIFAC). The NMBA is focussed on the development of
commercialization & value-addition for various product segments in bamboo.
The mission has a multi-disciplinary approach, functioning as a platform for
the development & exchange, of knowledge and technology while
simultaneously developing indigenous capacities and expertise. NMBA’s
work extends to various aspects of the bamboo sector including cultivation,
Material and product development, Structural applications and scientific
research. The mission has also established partnerships with various
institutions working with bamboo bringing together their expertise to
further the development of the bamboo sector.
