Bamboozle Theatre Company Ltd. is a charity that uses the power of theatre to transform the lives of
children with learning disabilities. Our aim is to offer children the opportunity to interact meaningfully with
the world, and to confound expectations of what disabled children can achieve. There are three strands to
our work:
Education and Learning
Bamboozle provides creative and innovative learning experiences for children with special needs and
shares its pioneering methodology with teachers and educators through training and research projects.
Families and Community
Bamboozle produces captivating multi-sensory experiences for profoundly disabled children and their
whole families – and finds ways to engage those that can seem hardest to reach.
Theatre and Touring Shows
Bamboozle takes high quality, interactive and immersive performances into theatres and special schools in
order to reach, engage and entertain all children - whatever their ability.

Our Background & Mission
Bamboozle Theatre Company was founded in 1994 by Artistic Directors Christopher Davies and Sue
Pyecroft, and became a registered charity in 2005. In 2010 we registered as a limited company. On the 1st
April 2011 a formal transfer of assets took place between ‘Bamboozle Theatre Company’ (an
unincorporated charity) and ‘Bamboozle Theatre Company Ltd.’ (an incorporated charity).
Though our legal status has changed, our charitable objective remains ‘to advance the education of the
public (particularly students) who have emotional, behavioural and/or learning disabilities, their parents,
carers, teachers and others working with them by the provision of such artistic and educational activities as
the executive committee see fit.’
Our early artistic programmes consisted of week-long residencies in theatres for schools and similar
residencies for parents and their disabled child in the holidays. School residencies have developed to
include professional development for teachers. The family residencies now include siblings. We have also
introduced touring productions which enable us to meet new partners and reach a greater number of
children. Our work continues to evolve in response to the changing needs of our partners. Our work with
schools is increasingly linked to whole school staff development and change, and to working to devise
methods to engage very hard to reach children. We aim to ensure that our approach is shared with others
to enable staff to help children to reach their full potential.
In our early days work took place on an ad hoc basis throughout the year administered from the attic of the
founder’s home. In 2008 the Artistic Directors took the decision to focus on developing the company as a
‘full-time’ organisation. We took on the lease of a large former textile factory in Leicester City converted
this into rehearsal rooms, office/studio space, storage areas and artist workshops. We have seen an
increase in annual income from £40,000 in 2005/2006 to £193,000 in 2012/2013.

Our Audiences, Our Market
The company specialises in working with children and young people who have moderate (MLD), severe
(SLD) and profound (PMLD) learning difficulties as well as those with emotional and behavioural (EBD)
difficulties. More recently we have developed work that focuses on the needs of those who have autistic
spectrum disorder (ASD) or Autism. Bamboozle also works with teachers, carers, parents and siblings.
Bamboozle believes that each of these young people, many of whom have high degrees of dependency and
complex needs, has a voice and a desire to learn and grow that needs to be recognised. This voice and
desire can be expressed and encouraged through engaging with artists and participating in the performing
arts.
Bamboozle have a strong reputation; we consistently exceed the expectations of our partners. Sometimes
this is with regard to small steps made by specific children for example getting a child to stay in a room, to
concentrate for a morning, to work with others, to engage with a stimulus or to contribute their own ideas.
Sometimes this is seen in effecting the attitudes and practice at a whole school level or supporting families
to connect and play together.
Our markets include:
Children and young people as described above
The families, friends, carers and educators of these children and young people.
Services which provide for these children and their families, including
o Special Schools
o Other Special Needs Services, transitions teams, care facilities
o Theatres with an inclusion agenda – those wanting to reach broader audiences and to
provide family friendly services
o Public and Third sector parent support services including respite care

Ambition & Vision: Where do we want to be in 5 years’ time?
We want to share our way of working so that by 2019 Bamboozle’s unique non-judgemental methodology
will be recognised nationally for its power to transform the lives of some of the UK’s most disabled
children. By increasing our turnover to in excess of £1,000,000 we aim to quadruple the number of children
and young people we reach. Not only will we affect the lives of the children we help through direct contact
on projects, but these changes will be sustained and extended through our influence in shaping adult
engagement with disabled children.
