Bambu® – more than an alternative to coffee

Bambu® is the oldest of Alfred Vogel‘s food products. In 1923, he offered it in his shop in Basel as a light drink for the whole family with a beautiful colour and fine aroma. “I chose the name Bambu as a memory of one of the most interesting coffee houses in Guatemala, which was called just that. It is decorated with Indian art and it made an unforgettable impression.“

Alfred Vogel was strictly against coffee and believed it would be healthier to replace coffee beans with good grains, fruits and roots. The recipe today still consists of chicory roots, grains, acorns and sundried Turkish figs.Bambu® is easy on the stomach, heart and nerves – a pleasant hot drink for the whole family. Suitable for children and pregnant woman.

Chicory – also known as cichorium intybus, belongs to the family of chicory and endives. This bush, which grows up to 1.5 m high, blooms in pale blue blossoms. The thickened roots, which look like turnips, are first dried, roasted and subsequently ground. Chicory has been a common alternative to coffee for a long time thanks to its bitterness.

Grain and barley – are full of mineral nutrients such as silicic acid. The barley is malted, i.e. moistened and brought to ger-mination. Natural enzymes are activated in this process, which convert the starch into sugar.

Figs – sundried Turkish figs provide mineral nutrients, energy and the incomparable fruity taste.

Acorns – contain importanttanning agents. The fully ripened fruits are pealed, crushed and lightly roasted.
