The Banaras Hindu University has a glorious traditionof pioneering contributions for Higher Education andResearch. At the time of its inception by its illustriousfounder Pandit Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviyaji,the university adopted a set of objectives, which haveguided its functioning and growth for nearly ninedecades. Aswe approach the last decade of the centennial year ofthis university, it is very opportune to reflect on the strength ofthis magnificent university and to plan for future challenges to beaddressed during this period. This document has been preparedwith a view to focus and concentrate on important challengesfacing the university. I am confident that as in the past theuniversity will rise to greater heights by suitably addressingall these issues and become a global institution involved in thecreation and dissemination of knowledge.
I record my sincere appreciations for all the members of thecommittee of the Centennial Challenges of the Banaras HinduUniversity and particularly to the members of the team whodrafted this document- Prof. Dhananjai Pandey, (School ofMaterials Sciences and Technology), Dr.Vishwanath Pandey,Information and Public Relations Officer and Convener of theCommittee and Rector, Prof. S. Lele.
I would like to see that suggestions contained in the BHUCentennial DecadeChallenges and Opportunities- 2016 documentare implemented after due deliberations and discussions by theuniversity community.

Banaras Hindu University, established in 1916, isthe largest residential university in Asia. The holisticmodel of education, conceived and enriched by itsillustrious founder, Mahamana Pandit Madan MohanMalaviyaji, offers refreshing new perspectives toyoung minds and facilitates the accomplishment oftheir creative talents. Its contribution in extendingthe frontiers of knowledge in critical areas and alsoin the regeneration of community values is wellmanifested throughout the world with its alumnioccupying key positions in varied professionaldomains. The University faculty has earned severalawards and honours for its outstanding researchachievements.
The University is located on the western bank ofriver Ganga. It is spread over an area of 15 squarekilometers with majestic buildings of greatarchitectural delight. It enshrines within itsprecincts a phenomenal range of Facultiesincorporating diverse disciplines of Science,Humanities, Social Sciences, Commerce, Law,Education, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, SanskritVidya Dharma Vigyan, Management, Medicine-Modern & Ayurveda, Engineering and Technology,Agriculture, Library Science, Journalism and a largenumber of Indian and Foreign Languages. TheUniversity has 123 independent teachingdepartments and 4 interdisciplinary schools, manyof them recognized as Centres of Excellence, 15Faculties, and one constituent college, namelyMahila Mahavidyalaya, and 3 Institutes - Instituteof Technology, Institute of Medical Sciences,Institute of Agriculture Sciences with the uniquedistinction of having all in the same walled campus.There are at present 7 Centres of Advanced Studies,
and 7 Special Assistance Programmes, and 21departments/schools supported under FISTprogramme of DST.It also has 4 affiliated UGcolleges and 3 schools.
The University has its own telecommunicationsetup, a press, computer network system, a dairy,agricultural farms, a museum of arts and cultureof international repute - Bharat Kala Bhawan, aSwimming Pool, Guest House Complex, Hostels forboys and girls, residential quarters for faculty andstaff, auditoriums including the main SwatantrataBhavan with nearly 2000 seats and modernfacilities, a Central Library having more than onemillion volumes, Health Centres, 1000 beddedmodern hospital, an indoor and outdoor stadium,gymnasium, the famous Lord Vishwanath Temple,Air/ Naval/Infantry NCCwings, NSS &Mountaineering centre, Public Relations andPublications Units, Employment Guidance andInformation Bureau, Training and PlacementCentres, Hobby Centre, Cafeteria, Banks and Post-Offices, a Telegraph Office, Shopping Centre,Airfield and Helipad, Electric, Water & Works
Departments and its own security arrangement forlaw and order. It is one of a handful of Indianuniversities with undergraduate and postgraduateeducation as well as research, all in one campus,and of these the only one with a universal spreadof disciplines.
The ranking of the Banaras Hindu University hasbeen notable and remarkable. It ranked as number(1) during the reference period of 1993-2002amongst all the Indian universities. The tablebelow shows its rank amongst some of the Indianuniversities:
