B.5 Affinity Group Activities

B.5.1 GOLD Affinity Group

IEEE GOLD Bangalore has been in the forefront in conceptualizing and organizing events for the benefit of young professional members since its inception. In the present times, IEEE GOLD Bangalore felt the need for practical and do it yourself based workshops targeted towards the young technology professionals which would add and enhance their skill set in their professional career. The workshops held by IEEE Bangalore GOLD in the year 2013 are:

• TISP - Jnana Vijnana Vidyapeetha • Teacher in Service Program (TISP)-Volunteer Training • Teacher in Service Program (TISP) for IEE Members and Kids • TISP Follow Up Workshop at Jnana Vijnana Vidyapeeta School • Professional Workshop Series - Objective C & iOS App development • Professional Workshop Series – Windows 8 App Development

TISP -Jnana Vijnana Vidyapeetha IEEE GOLD Bangalore in association with Jnana Vijnana Vidyapeetha School, Bangalore organized the second TISP workshop in Bangalore for the year 2013 on 16th February, 2013. The GOLD Bangalore team represented by the chair Prakash Sudhir, and accompanied by Manjunath Iyer, Vandana M and Vijay K started the session with the introduction of IEEE, TISP, its mission and the team.

TISP Volunteers and Teachers The session which included the hands on activity for the lesson plan “Electronic Messages – Then and Now” was anchored by Manjunath after the introduction. The participants had the

Page 38: Bangalore Section Report Form (Jan 2014)€¦ · Various talks on Ethical hacking, non conventional IT careers, IEEE CS, volunteering were given by eminent speakers. IEEE Bangalore

38 required materials on the tables with the lesson plans. With a brief introduction to the history of communication, the goal and expected outcomes of the activity were explained to the participants. And yes, they were on their toes to start off with the activity trying new things and learning the already known concepts with practical applications. The feedback given by the participants were so effective that, the Principal of the school agreed upon allotting a special slot of 1hour duration for “TISP” activities in the school on the third Saturday every month starting from June 2013. The GOLD team also promised its presence with a volunteer in each of these activities.

Teacher in Service Program (TISP)-Volunteer Training BMS College of Engineering IEEE Student Chapter organized the volunteer training session for TISP initiative by IEEE. The event was held at Faculty Development Centre, BMSCE, on 20th of April, 2013 and attended by 40 participants (both student and faculty) from various institutions. The session was conducted by coordinators from TISP - Manjunath Iyer, Vishwas Jois and Vandana. The participants were divided into groups of 6 people each and were given a task of making a parachute. The activity saw many creative designs and the models made by the teams were competed against time. This activity taught the participants many technical aspects in a practical manner. Some light was shed on the process of induced thinking and practical learning.

Teacher in Service Program (TISP) for IEE Members and Kids

The first of its kind, Teacher in Service Program for IEEE Members and their kids was hosted in Bangalore Section on 11th May 2013 at the Institution of Engineers, Bangalore. This was an initiative to create awareness amongst the members about the TISP activities in the section. The event kick started at 10:00 AM by Manjunath Iyer who gave the participants a brief introduction to TISP and its ideologies. The Teacher In-Service Program (TISP) provides a forum for IEEE volunteers to demonstrate the application of engineering, science and mathematics concepts by sharing their real-world experiences. A brief report on the TISP activities conducted so far by IEEE GOLD was also shared with the participants.

39 The activity chosen for the day was ‘Playing with parachute’. The main focus of the lesson was on parachute design. Teams construct parachutes from everyday materials. They then test their parachutes to determine whether they can transport a metal washer to a target on the ground with the slowest possible rate of descent. They were also familiarized with various technical aspects involved in designing the parachutes, like different types of parachutes, the mathematical relations controlling string length and diameter for efficient descent. Then the teams were given 60 minutes time to come up with their own design using everyday materials provided to them. These members, who are also the proud parents of the participating kids henceforth made a decision to make their kids work on such models during their vacation and free time and help them understand the concepts a lot better than just learning theory in the class room. The participating kids were also given a kit consisting of necessary materials and the lesson plan to carry out “Electric Messages. Then and Now” experiment under the supervision of their parents at home, as IEEE goodies. TISP Follow Up Workshop at Jnana Vijnana Vidyapeeta School

Continuing our association with Jnana Vignana Vidyapeetha (JVVP), IEEE GOLD Bangalore organized the third TISP session on the 20th of July. The topic to be covered for the day was Ohm’s law, series and parallel circuits. The classes targeted were the 9th and 10th grade. After a brief explanation of the statement of the law and the related formulae, we spoke about connections of components in circuits. Power sources, resistors, switches were covered as basic circuit components and the different modes of connections viz. series and parallel resistance concept was covered. Getting them to do things on their being was the main objective; we modeled the LED as a resistive load and provided them with the same. They used the batteries to light up the LED’s, learnt about the working. In the process of experimenting, the students managed to burn quite a number of LED’s and this led to another question ‘Why did the LED’s burn ?’.The session was filled with questions in situ that came from the hands on activity that was happening. The teachers too came up and leaned in on activities and asked questions.

Teaching Ohm’s Law to Students Fun with Ohm’s Law

On completing this activity, we moved on to measuring the voltages and currents of resistive circuits. The school had analog equipments in their labs like analog voltmeters, ammeters, which are not completely preferred for experiments. We had a digital multimeter with us and we showed them its uses by measuring the currents/voltages in different circuits. This was a three step process: Construct, Measure, Remove and Oversee construction. Initially, we construct a circuit, show them the voltages and currents across resistances, compare these

Page 40: Bangalore Section Report Form (Jan 2014)€¦ · Various talks on Ethical hacking, non conventional IT careers, IEEE CS, volunteering were given by eminent speakers. IEEE Bangalore

IEEE Bangalore Section Report For the Year 2013

40 results with the theoretical ones obtained from the formula and teach them to debug the circuit in the process. Once this was done, we would remove the connections, and let the students make the connections. They would come back to us with their measurements for the particular resistive network. Of course we did use the analog voltmeters/ammeters in the circuits since the students would be using the same in their exams. By giving examples, we showed them the disadvantages of the analog components that are mainly limited by range. The Q&A session was the one that we had been waiting for and it was completely worth the wait. The doubts took the discussion one step ahead from series/parallel connections to star/delta connections and so on. Even though we had not extensively talked about parameters that change resistance, we had questions coming on the same asking about the effect of temperature and pressure on resistance. Questions about value of resistances through color codes and even materials that were used in the making of resistances came up as we tried to satisfy their enthusiasm with our answers. We had an interactive session with the principal of the school Mrs Lakshmi and gave her feedback on the day’s session and it was happy to know that this positivity was reciprocated to us from the feedback that the students had given her. It was good to know that our efforts had been appreciated.

Professional Workshop Series - Objective C & iOS App development

A model was worked upon through which the IEEE GOLD Bangalore would collaborate with the technology companies and impart workshops on latest technologies. As part of this series of workshop, a workshop on iOS and Objective C Application Development was organized in association with Exilant Technologies Pvt Ltd at Bangalore, India from August 24th to August 28th 2013.
