nce again a very warm welcome to Bangkok for our eighth edition of the Oakwood Bangkok International Tens. We would like to thank Oakwood Asia Pacific for their continued support to our tournament and Nak Suu Tigers

rugby initiative with special thanks extended to both Peter Lucas and Raynor Simon for once again making this happen. We also welcome on board this year, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines who like Oakwood really understand our vision with Nak Suu Tigers and we are hoping both remain key long term partners and thanks are extended to Alwin Hollander. We also welcome back Nigel Cornick and Henri Young through their new venture Kingdom Properties as well as aloha to Outrigger Hotels & Resorts and look to developing long term partnerships with both groups. As you may be aware, in recent years our efforts through this tournament are to raise funding for our adopted cause, Changing Lives Forever which is a junior rugby initiative for children from disadvantaged communities and they are called Nak Suu Tigers. You will see club memorabilia for sale with 100% of the proceeds being donated to the Club so please support them as much as you can. We will also be accepting donations of rugby kit, boots and most important of all cash at the Nak Suu tent over the weekend. Please dig deep and support as much as you can. You can read more about the Nak Suu Tigers on page 8. This weekend is all about Nak Suu. Aside from providing ball boys and girls throughout the weekend, Nak Suu will again be entering teams into the junior tournament. In addition, Sopo Fakaua who is one of the major driving forces of the whole Nak Suu programme, has again assembled a team of players from Thailand and New Zealand to lead a charge on the paddock this weekend so we will see the second edition of the Nak Suu Warriors. If you recall from last year, they were also the band on both Saturday and Sunday in the Bangers Beer Garden. Thanks as always to the DHL Bangkok Lions RFC for hosting and handling the junior tournament as they have since 2007. Thanks also to all at our host club Old Bangkok Bangers Rugby Club In addition to our friends mentioned above, we would also like to thank our other 2013 sponsors and in all cases these are long term partners of the tournament. Greetings from theNak Suu Rugby AcademyThailand

e welcome you all to the land of SMILES and the city of Bangkok, the host city to one of the biggest tournaments in Thailand. My name is Sopo Fakaua and I am the director of a Rugby program called Changing

Lives Forever (CLF). Our club name is the NAK SUU Tigers (Thai word for ‘Noble Warrior) and we work with underprivileged children in the slum communities of Bangkok.

The purpose of the CLF program is to have a lasting impact in the lives of young people through rugby training and life skill development; building trust, hope, self-esteem and courage to impact and better their future. We believe rugby is a sport that will enable these young people to develop in a positive direction.

The CLF rugby program has been running for a little over a year and we have had over 200 kids come through this program (weekly attendance averages about 100 kids) who get picked up and dropped off from 4 different slum communities around the city of Bangkok. The club helps provide opportunities for these kids to achieve more outside of their normal circumstances, discover the passion for the game and dream of what their future might become.

In 2012 we have seen huge support from both the international and local Bangkok rugby community through coaching, health care resources, financial support and donations in kind.

There are many expenses connected with running the club and we rely for funding soley on our own fundraising events and the support of the Bangkok International Tens (BIT).

The major expense for the club is paying for Transportation (which is 60 percent of the total cost), Food (Lunch and snacks are provided each week) and the rental of the football pitch. We were hoping that this might be something you would consider helping us with.

In return for your sponsorship we would of course be willing to wear your logo on our club shirts and for you to be listed as our key sponsor on all our club literature and monthly newsletter. We do hope that this is something you might be willing to consider. Bobby SkinstadSouth AfricaBobby Skinstad (born 3 July 1976 in Bulawayo, Rhodesia) is a Zimbabwean-born South African rugby union player who represented the national team, the Springboks, 42 times, scoring 55 points (11 tries). He played in the positions of flanker and number eight. He stands 1.93 meters (6 ft 4 in) tall and weighs 104 kilograms (229 lbs). He lived in Kloof, KwaZulu-Natal while he attended Highbury Preparatory School, before boarding at Hilton College. At Stellenbosch University where he captained the ‘Maties’ (University) 1st side. He was selected by Western Province for the Currie Cup and Super 12, and went on to

captain both sides. He then moved to Johannesburg and played the 2003 season for the Golden Lions (Currie Cup) and the Cats (Super 12) before leaving for the United Kingdom. Having represented South Africa at all levels, including captaining the under 21 Springbok side in 1996 and 1997, and playing for the SA Sevens team in 1997, Skinstad made his début for the Springboks as a replacement on 29 November 1997 against England. International Rugby Player Profiles

Oakwood Bangkok International Tens 2013 15

The tournament shall follow the IRB laws of the game of Rugby Union and particularly the ten-a-side law variations. i.e.:

• The team that scores shall restart; • All kicks at goal and at the kickoff shall be drop

kicks;• All infringements by a team taking a kickoff/restart

shall result in a free kick to the opposition.• If a team elects to take a penalty kick at goal, a

drop kick must be used and must be taken within 30 seconds of the nomination to kick at goal.

The Laws of the Game apply with the following variationsLaw 3: Numbers of Players – The Teami. Law 3.1: Maximum number of players on the playing area – each team must have no more than ten players on the playing area.ii. Law 3.4: Players nominated as substitutes - rolling substitutions within the registered playing squad of 18 players are allowed but note that the ongoing player must join the play at the half way line and may not move on to the field until the player being replaced has left the field of play – penalty kick awarded where the game would have restarted. . Law 5: Timei. Law 5.1: Duration of a match - the duration of all pool games and quarter-finals is 7 minutes each half. The duration of all semi-finals is 8 minutes each half. The duration of all finals is 10 minutes each half.ii. Law 5.2: Half time - after half time the teams change ends. There is an interval of not more than two minutes for all pool games, quarter-finals and semi-finals. There is an interval of three minutes for all finals. iii. Law 5.6: Playing extra time – extra time will only be played in finals. Should a game be drawn in either the quarter-final or semi-final the team scoring first will advance. If there is a drawn match in the finals or should there be no score in either a quarter-final or semi-final, after a break of one minute, the extra time is played in periods of five minutes. After each period, the teams change ends without an interval.

(Note – Law 6 - there should be coin toss before extra time. Law 9.4 - In extra time, the team that scores points first is immediately declared the winner, without any further play.)

Law 9: Method of Scoringi. Law 9 B.1: Taking a conversion kick - the kick must be a drop kick. The kicker must take the kick within forty seconds of a try having been scored. The kick is disallowed if the kicker does not take the kick in the time allowed.ii. Law 9 B.3: The opposing team - all the opposing team must immediately assemble close to their own 10-metre line. Law 10: Foul Play

When a player has been temporarily suspended (yellow card) suspension will be for two minutes.Law 13: Kick-off and Restartsi. Law 13.2: Who takes the kick-off and restart kick - after a score, the team that has scored kicks off with a drop kick which must be taken at or behind the centre of the half way line. If the kick is not taken as such, a free kick is awarded to the non-offending team at the centre of the half way line. ii. Law 13.3: Position of the Kicker’s team at the kick-off - all the kicker’s team must be behind the ball when it is kicked. If they are not, a free kick is awarded to the non-offending team at the centre of the half way line. iii. Law 13.7: Kick-off of under ten metres and not played by an opponent - if the ball does not reach the opponents’ 10-metre line, a free kick is awarded to the non-offending team at the centre of the half way line. iv. Law 13.8: Ball goes directly into touch - the ball must land in the field of play. If it is kicked directly into touch, a free kick is awarded to the non-offending team at the centre of the half way line. v. Law 13.9: Ball goes into the in-goal - If the opposing team grounds the ball, or if they make it dead, or if the ball becomes dead by going into touch-in-goal or on or over the dead ball line a free kick is awarded to the non-offending team at the centre of the half way line. Law 20: Scrumi. Law 20.1: Forming a scrum - a scrum must have five players from each team at all times. All five players must stay bound to the scrum until it ends. Each front row must have three players in it, no more and no less. Two locks must form the second row by binding together so that their heads are between a prop and the hooker. Sanction: Penalty kick ii. Law 20.10: Ending a scrum - no player in the scrum may unbind to play the ball. Sanction: Penalty kickLaw 21: Penalty and Free Kicksi. Law 21.3: How penalty and free-kicks are taken - any player may take a penalty or free kick awarded for an infringement with any kind of kick: punt, drop kick but not a place kick. The ball may be kicked with any part of the leg from below the knee to the toe but not with the heel.ii. Law 21.4: Penalty and free-kicks options and requirements - no delay. If a kicker indicates to the referee the intention to kick at goal, the kick must be taken within thirty seconds of the penalty having been awarded. If the 40 seconds is exceeded the kick is disallowed, a scrum is ordered at the place of the mark and the opponents throw in the ball.In addition to the above the following Tournament Rules shall apply:a) A player sent off by a referee will serve a minimum of a one day ban. This may be increased to a tournament ban, if the tournament organisers feel it is warranted. b) A player who is sent to the sin bin shall return to his

team bench and await permission to rejoin the game after the two minutes of playing time has expired. c) Each team will supply a touch judge for the game immediately following theirs. From the semi finals on, the referees will supply touch judges. d) A team which has less than 18 players because of injuries may borrow reserve players. They can borrow only players who have been registered prior to the event, from teams which have already been eliminated from the tournament, such teams being either in the same or lower level of the tournament (e.g. Cup, Plate, Bowl, Shield etc.). A reserve player may only be used as a replacement in a match and only after all members of the team originally registered have been deemed unfit to play, and must be retained in that team for the remainder of the tournament unless he is injured. e) No persons shall enter the playing area during a match except medically trained persons who may enter at any time to tend to an injured player. Team members acting as water boys may enter the playing area during a stoppage in play but only with the permission of the referee. They should wear distinctive clothing to identify themselves. f) There will be 24 teams in six pools of four teams. Each pool consists of one team seeded 1-6, one team ranked 7-12, then one team ranked 13-18 and one team ranked 19-24. g) All decisions regarding the seeding of teams are the sole responsibility of the tournament organisers. h) Play will commence with the teams in each pool playing against each other in their respective pool. In pool games the first named team in the playing order will kick off playing from left to right. i) For knock out games the coin toss to be completed during the previous game; location at the announcers stand. j) In each pool game, two points will be awarded for a win and one point per team for a draw. There will be no extra time. k) On completion of the pool games there will be six knockout competitions, the Cup, Bowl, Plate, Shield, Jug and Tankard. l. The top team in each pool and the top two second placed teams i.e. a total of eight (8) will advance to the quarter-finals of Cup. The order of second placed teams will be based on points awarded first, then on tries scored, then points difference between for/against scored and should there be two teams from the same pool, the winner of the pool match. If there are two or more teams equal after this, then it will be decided by a draw from a hat. ii. The four winning teams from the Cup quarter-finals will advance to the semi-finals of the Cup. The winners shall advance to the final of the Cup.iii. The four runners up from the Cup quarter-finals will advance to the semi-finals of the Plate. The winners shall advance to the final of the Plate.

iv. The four remaining second placed teams and the top four placed third teams will advance to the quarter-finals of the Bowl. The order of third paced teams will be based on points awarded first, then on tries scored, then points difference between for/against scored and should there be two teams from the same pool, the winner of the pool match. If there are two or more teams equal after this, then it will be decided by a draw from a hat. v. The four winning teams from the Bowl quarter-finals will advance to the semifinals of the Bowl. The winners shall advance to the final of the Bowl.vi. The four runners up from the Bowl quarter-finals will advance to the semi-finals of the Shield. The winners shall advance to the final of the Shield. vii. The eight remaining teams will advance to the quarter-finals of the Jug. The winners will advance to the semi-finals of the Jug and the runners-up with play in the semi-finals of the Tankard. viii. The above format allows all teams to play at least two games in the knockout phases of the competition on the Second day.

b) The rules of the tournament, including their interpretation and any additional rules, are at the sole discretion of the tournament organizers, whose decisions shall be final.

VETERANS COMPETITION (OVER 35)The mens competition tournament rules will apply with the addition of the following rules:

1. Players must be a minimum of 35 years old at the time of the tournament2. The use of non-contested scrums and the 20 metres running rule to be agreed between the captains in consultation with the referee in advance of the game.

ANCIENTS (OVER 50) GAMEIn addition to the mens tournament rules and the veterans rules noted above, the following shall also apply:

1. Players must be a minimum of 50 years old at the time of the tournament2. No contested scrums; scrum half must pass3. Line outs - no lifting or supporting. Free kick to the non-offending team.4. Offside - normal IRB rules (i.e. nobody cares!)5. Kicking - no kicking whatsoever in open play; conversions and kickoffs are allowed but only by drop kick. Free kick to the non-offending team.6. Tackles No tackles designed to take opponent to the ground are allowed. Players must be “claimed and held” above the waist. Players “claimed and held” are deemed to be tackled and must pass the ball or release it without delay. Free kick to the non-offending team.7. Other rules may be agreed between the captains in consultation with the referee in advance of the game.

Under 14-18

POSTS & FLAGSCorner posts will be positioned at the outside junction of the goal line and the touch line.• If a player is in possession of the ball and touches

a corner post OR corner flag he will not be in touch unless he touches the touchline or the ground beyond the touchline.

• If the ball is not being carried by a player and it touches the corner post the ball will not be deemed to be touch in goal and where the ball goes next, perhaps over the touchline or touch-in-goal will determine the next play.

INSIDE 22When a defending player receives the ball outside the 22 metre line and passes, puts or takes the ball back inside the 22, the following can occur.• If the ball is then kicked directly into touch, the

lineout is in line with where the ball was kicked. • If a tackle, ruck or maul is subsequently formed and

the ball is then kicked directly into touch, the lineout is where the ball crossed the touchline.

LINE-OUT• On a quick throw in, the ball can be thrown straight

or backwards towards the defenders goal line. • Players may assist a team-mate in jumping for the

ball by lifting and supporting that player providing that the lifting and/or supporting players do not support the jumping team-mate below the shorts from behind or below the thighs from the front.

• Lifting is permitting only in Under 16 and 18 age group

TACKLE & RUCKImmediately the tackle occurs there are offside lines.

A tackle occurs when the ball carrier is brought to the ground and held by an opponent. This includes being on one knee, sitting on the ground or being on another player on the ground. Once tackled the ball carrier must immediately place, push or pass the ball. The tackler must release the tackled player and roll away. No defending player may prevent the ball carrier from playing the ball. After a tackle players must be on their feet when they play the ball. Non-tacklers must join the “tackle area” from their own side of the tackle

• If the ball in a ruck becomes unplayable the scrum feed will be awarded to the team-moving forward immediately prior to the stoppage. Offside line is last feet.

• If the ball in a maul becomes unplayable the scrum feed will be awarded to the team NOT in possession at the commencement of the maul. Offside line is last feet.

SCRUM• The offside line for players who are not in the

scrum and who are not the teams scrum half, is 5 metres behind the hindmost foot of the scrum.

• No wheeling : A team must not intentionally wheel a scrum. If a wheel reaches 45 degrees, the referee must stop play. If the wheel is unintentional, the referee orders another scrum at the place where the scrum is stopped. If the wheel is deemed to be intentional: Penalty Kick

• Maximum 1.5 metres push : A team in a scrum must not push the scrum more than 1.5 metres towards their opponents’ goal line. Penalty: Free Kick

• Ball must be released from scrum: A player must not intentionally keep the ball in the scrum once the player’s team has heeled the ball and controls it at the base of the scrum. Penalty: Free Kick

The Bangkok Japanese RFC has more than 45 years history since 1964.We have more than 40 members who are not only Japanese but also have members from Argentina, Cameroon and England. We enjoy playing rugby every weekend throughout the year.Currently, we are the Asian Japanese club champions winning the14th Asian Japanese Rugby Cup held at Jakarta, Indonesia in December 2011.Our motto is “We enjoy our life through rugby”. The Old Bangkok Bangers youth side, the nectar of our club, are entering an open age team to support our Vets and the true coffin dodging Banger Ancients. We look forward to meeting many of you on the field but all of you in the now infamous “Bangers Bar” at the field during our wonderful weekend of festival rugby. As for results we hope that Eddie Evans has looked after us with the draw and that we get to play all of the soft Kiwi teams early! As a team that spends more time in the bar after training than on the pitch we often pull off a few surprises and we plan to keep up this tradition. Look out, look out the Bangers are about!

“XV Gaulois was officially formed in 2009 by a few enthusiasts sharing the spirit of “Champagne Rugby”, with the intention to bring together the French Rugby community in Singapore and engage in local friendly games and regional tournaments. Founded by a select band of gentlemen, the team has been established on the basis that everyone is welcome regardless of age, race or religion. In just 3 years, the team has grown from just over 15 players at inception to over 90 members, notwithstanding supporters, family and friends. Beyond the core values of rugby, reinforced by a strong sense of camaraderie, the XV Gaulois prides itself in its “French Flair”. Nurturing this spirit far away from home will remain the essence of the team and it will always welcome anyone from anywhere, as long as they are ready to taste and share the Gallic way of life. Our taste for festivity rarely goes unnoticed as shows the various most festive team trophies collected in tournaments. Bintang Juniors. Now, when you have a bunch of old forwards occasionally offering the ball to a bunch of old backs, you have a recipe for scintillating rugby, and so it was that the inaugural 2009 team won the Selangor 3rd Division cup! We are an eclectic mix of expats and Malaysians, aged between 18 and 50, playing serious rugby for fun. Be afraid!!

This will be the second visit to the Bangkok International Rugby Tens. The team consists of players from Polytechnic in Malaysia. The principle of this club is to develop rugby sport for the students during their studies. The main objective of this club is to increase the number of from Polytechnic students by 10% every year.

The Burwood Blues are a bunch of mates congregated from the Burwood suburb of Sydney, Australia. They are all ex rugby players from clubs including West Harbour, Randwick, Warringah and Easts who due to bad life choices – including marriage, kids and not enough alcohol have resigned themselves to the social rugby tours that brings them to Bangkok. A few of the team still ply their trade, some in the echelons of Premier club rugby in Sydney and most in the echelons of the Western stand at Concord oval.

Bombay Gymkhana Boys

The Gymkhana was founded in 1875 in Bombay and since then has been one of the leading Gymkhana Clubs in India. In 1890 the first Rugby match was played on the grounds and in the following year, the team travelled to Calcutta to play the Rugby Challenge Cup along with the Calcutta Cricket and Football club which happens to be the oldest rugby club outside of the UK. Bombay Gymkhana hosts the All India & South Asia Rugby Tournaments. Teams from Sri Lanka and Pakistan

In certain parts of the world an incredible phenomenon known as ‘Jamboys’ exists. On golf courses all around these legendary individuals can make your round comfortable and fly free. These boys will cover their heads in jam and follow your four ball, attracting flies TO them and AWAY from you so you can play your shots in comfort. In recognition and celebration of the Jamboys a rugby club of some note has been formed: Jamboys Rugby. Now these hardy souls are celebrated every year at the Bangkok and Cape Town Tens. This year the team will be lead again by noted proponent of the spider tackle and president of the Asia Pacific Long Ankle Society, “Wagga”, so without further ado, the Jamboys team of 2013. Jamboys Oath of Allegiance “I Swear allegiance, to the Jamboys, on and off the field I will live and die, for my men, and I will never yield. On the park or in the pub, for the glory of this mighty team I’ll bleed, sweat and breath my last, to live the Jamboys Dream”.

Most scholars agree that rugby originated in 1823 after a bloke named William Webb Ellis went mental after seeing yet another of his soccer opponents take a dive. Wrong. The origins of our game stretch right back to the days of the ancient Aegean, where the gods used thunderbolts as goal posts and small agrarian mammals as rugby footballs. Ancient Turkish cave etchings show sheep shooting miles through the lofty airs above the now Dardanelles, obviously a precursor to last year’s ELV aerial debacle.In true homage to the origins of our fine game, the Corinthian men from the Southerners Sports Club Bangkok will be drawing inspiration from their deus forefathers in their quest to actually do something worth writing about in next year’s program, rather than wanging on about ancient Greek gods.Best of luck to all competitors this weekend, and many thanks to the organizers of what is always a cracking tournament weekend.

regularly visit the Gymkhana to play matches during the All India Tournament.Besides Rugby, other sports such as tennis, squash, soccer, hockey & cricket are played on our grounds at various times during the year. The Gymkhana till recently used to host the prestigious Aga Khan Hockey Tournament on its grounds. Bombay Gymkhana also has the honor of holding the IRB Qualifiers played in the Asian Region over the past 3 years.

Gakushi Rugger ClubAll of Gakushi, Gakushi Jr and Gakushix are one team “Gakushi Rugger Club” in Japan. The club was established in 1928 and have more than an 80 years history of playing rugby. Members of “Gakushi” are Old Boys of Tokyo and Kyoto Universities and five other five universities which were known as the “7 imperial universities” in early Japan. This is the third time Gakushi has entered the Bangkok International Tens tournament. We consider this an honour to be here. We are looking forward to enjoying not only playing rugby but also the social interaction with the broad international rugby community

INSEAD Singapore

Brigalow BushwackersThe Brigalow Bushwackers are a group of rugby players from across the “Brigalow belt” in central Queensland. The side was formed in late 2012 to facilitate international trips for amateur players. Players have been drawn from a large geographical area around central Queensland. Players to watch include team captain Kurt Johnson from Rolleston and Neddy Poschelk from Clermont. The Bushwackers are focused on running rugby with an eye on the beer at the end.

Western QuokkasNamed after a strange rat like animal that occasionally stinks and can’t swim, the Western Qoukkas have displayed similar characteristics while on tour. Having competed in Sevens and Tens competitions over the past few years, Success came their way as cup winners in the Bali Tens.This group of Australian players and supporters are from Perth, Darwin, Brisbane, and Bangkok. We look normal to the naked eye but looks can be deceiving.Lock up your livestock people, the qoukkas are about to put the bang into Bangkok.

The INSEAD Barbarians were founded in 1963. They have and remain undefeated to this day. Blessed by the Rugby Gods, they’ve been re-baptized and granted new names (you’re encouraged to ask about their meanings). With half the team located in Singapore, and half outside Paris, they enjoy touring pubs all over the world, and occasionally a few rugby pitches. Being undefeated, they don’t really need to be coached.

The first ever competition of the club was the Bangkok 10’s in 2003 Since then Thai Barbarians focused more on rugby 7-a-side and 10-a-side rather than 15-a-side due to there are higher possibilities in winning the match and there are more international matches for those. In order to develop rugby sport, Thai Barbarians Rugby Football Club has officially been registered as a Limited Company As a company limited can legally raise fund for the activities of the club like other famous clubs do around the globe, e.g Auckland Club New Zealand, London Wasps of England etc. Thai Barbarians Rugby Club is now well known around South East Asia. There are many countries that invite us to participate in their tournaments.

Thai LegendsThere is an old UK saying “Rugby is a ruffian’s game played by gentlemen”, Accordingly, a group of talented young Thai rugby players – gentlemen - were brought together to form the Thai Barbarians. This was in 2003. At that time, they had no ground or clubhouse, only the desire to play attacking barbarian style rugby. For six years, the Thai Legends Rugby Club has flourished and proved to be an outstanding success achieving another goal to play both in Thailand and around Southeast Asia. The Thai Legends are well established and lead by a strong team of former players. There are many young Thai rugby men who would love the chance to play with this very special club. To accommodate their wishes another team was started called The Thai Legends. Their goal is to emulate the success of the founding club Thai Barbarians.

Nak Suu WarriorsFor the first time, the Nak Suu Warriors will participate in the Men’s competition. The team will add a new dimension and future to the Nak Suu Academy and the “Changing Live Forever” program.

The makeup of the invitational team is interesting, with four New Zealanders, a former Thai National Captain and handful of useful Bangkok expat and Thai players. The team are committed to playing exciting rugby, putting the Nak Suu Warriors on the map and bringing awareness to the Nak Suu rugby program over the weekend. The team will be coached and managed by Pete Burgess, the former coach of the Old Bangkok Bangers Rugby Club. The Nak Suu Warriors want to say thanks to all that made this possible and to the players and the many supporters who have come on board to support the Nak Suu childrens rugby program.

BRUTThe BRUT (Barbarians Rugbymen from Universities of Technology) is a French University alumni club established in 2009 .The former rugby men who played together in University, decided four years after the end of school, to re-build the team to compete in the French tournament of University alumni.It was such a success, they all decided to continue the adventure. BRUT is competing today in the Paris Social League.After participating in three tournaments in Europe, the next step was a rugby adventure in Asia.Twelve of the players are based in France, one in Singapore, one in Jakarta and one in Hong Kong arrive in Bangkok with one idea in mind. Scorpion Putrajaya has been competing internationally for the past 3 years. Scorpion Putrajaya Rugby Club exist to promote rugby game to our community in Putrajaya Federal Territory, Malaysia. We also provide free coaching and guidance to the community and we are independent club founded in 2010 under Putrajaya Sports Council Malaysia.We have participated in the Malaysia Rugby Union competition, National Inter Club Competition (NICC), National Super Tens and won a few major cup in national club invitational tournament. We have competed three major rugby tournament in Thailand including Hatyai Sevens and Prince of Songkhla Sevens tournament.

About Bangers On Bikes

he Bangers On Bikes Charity Ride, conceived four years ago, is now a yearly event and proudly supported by the Old

Bangkok Bangers Rugby Club. For many years, the Bangers were involved in a rural rugby development program for Thai youth. It was at a rugby training weekend in Phuket, that the players were introduced to the Asia Center Foundation (ACF). ACF provides assistance and educational support for underprivileged Thai children in Phuket. After talking to the staff and children at the Center, the Bangers thought they could help in some way. It become apparent that funding was always an issue. The decision was made to support the Center in their long term mission to build a school.The ride was the brainchild of Bob Pearson the talented Bangers rugby veteran. Bob enlisted the support of like minded Bangers, Pete Burgess & Jean-Francois Klentzi and decided to organise a sponsored cycle ride from Bangkok to Phuket.In the following years, additional riders have thrown their weight behind the ride Patrick Bernard, Martin Hodgson, Richard Folds, Andrew Lamont, Trevor Day and this year Rod Kerr and Jim Beckett.All the riders fund their own ride. It is strictly volunteer. All monies collected go to the charities. Following on from this, the Old Bangkok Bangers upped the anti and support another charity in Bangkok, the Nak Suu Warriors Rugby Academy located in the slums of Klong Toey. The ultimate goal is to have a lasting impact in the lives of young Thais building trust, hope, self-

esteem, and courage. providing these children with the opportunity to develop skills, and character needed to successfully live a life that will contribute to society.Over the last four years, the Bangers On Bikes Ride has raised over 1,000,000.00 Baht for the two charities. Our goal this year is in excess of 600,000.00 Baht. The ride has established a substantial track record, in Thailand cycling charitable fund raising and not least, friendship, camaraderie and a unique spirit fostered by the event with both the sponsors and the charities.

For those who are not familiar with the Ancients, they were formed some three years ago by a group of Bangers of advancing years who found the increasing pace and physicality of the Vets teams meant they could no longer risk a run out. Hence a new level of play was designed for over 50’s and the Ancients were born.With some players well into their 70’s, some rule modifications were needed. Essentially, a two handed tackle regime with no deliberate taking to the ground, restricted running ( not often a limit due to breathing difficulties), no kicking ( as that would demand running!) and many other rules known only to the referee. On rare occasions, dispensation to under 50’s may be given for levels of disability - mainly advanced inebriatioin!The referee is an important factor in Ancients games; All previous games have resulted in draws as a function of the referees ability to interpret the

rules according to the scoreJudicious yellow cards and bias resulting from either team scoring mean it is not worthwhile taking the game too seriously. As soon as the scores are level again, all previous sins are forgiven.Traditionally, a shot of port is partaken before play and at half time and, for players yellow carded, a mandatory beer is needed whilst sitting in the sin bin.Having virtually eliminated risk from contact (we did have a nasty incident on one occasion when a players fell awkwardly sidestepping the bar), we issue an open invite to all qualfying guests at the tournament to join in the fun. If you or your mates would like a run, find the Bangers Ancients and ask for Soi Dog ( you’ll recognise them as the group of elderly ragtags making a lot of noise). Shirts, socks and shorts will be supplied; all you will need are boots/trainers and a beer!Enjoy the weekend and, play or not, give the Ancients your full support - hope to see everyone at the Bangers Beer Garden over the weekend.

Gymkhana Club ColumboWe first took part in this tournament in 2009 and we were the Cup Runners up in the Over 35 (Old Boys) tournament lost to South Africa in the final. Then again took part in 2011 and won the Shield. This is the third time we are participating for this tournament,hope to win the cup.

All of Gakushi, Gakushi Jr and Gakushix are one team “Gakushi Rugger Club” in Japan. The club was established in 1928 and have more than an 80 years history of playing rugby. Members of “Gakushi” are Old Boys of Tokyo and Kyoto Universities and five other five universities which were known as the “7 imperial universities” in ancient Japan.This is the second time Gakushi has played in the Bangkok International Tens tournament. We consider this an honour to be here. We are looking forward to enjoying not only playing rugby but also the social interaction with the broad international rugby community

The anticipation and excitement created by the some of these legendary ex-Sri Lankan players taking the field again would indeed be a highlight for many a rugby connoisseur. HARFA is happy to mention that this tournament has become an annual feature in the HARFA calendar.

The Calcutta Cocktail Classics are a concoction of players currently based around the world. The players have originated from clubs in Calcutta or have at the least played major tournaments there. Calcutta(Kolkata) along with Bombay(Mumbai) has been the centres of Indian Rugby for over 100 years and incidentally the Calcutta Cup is awarded to the winner of the annual Six Nations Championship match between England and Scotland.The Bangkok Tens 2013 will be the maiden tournament for the Calcutta Cocktail Classics and we hope to make an impact both on and off the field.

Formed with the wives and girlfriends in December 2004 during the Nomad Rugby Christmas Party. Signing up blindly for a sport no one has ever played, taking up a couple of Nomads boys to coach a bunch of girls and playing in their first tournament in the summer of 2005. We are looking forward to a fantastic weekend of touch at the Bangkok Tens. Good vibes and good times.

The INSEAD Ladyboys were founded in 1963. They have and remain undefeated to this day. Blessed by the Rugby Gods, they’ve been re-baptized and granted new names (you’re encouraged to ask about their meanings). With half the team located in Singapore, and half outside Paris, they enjoy touring pubs all over the world, and occasion-ally a few rugby pitches. Being undefeated, they don’t really need to be coached.

SouthernersThe Southerners Touch started back in 1998 with a group of girls being fed up of playing tennis while the boys played rugby. The ladies set up Touch, which then devel-oped into a full section of the Southerners Sports Club. We are really looking forward to a great weekend of rugby at the Bangkok Tens.

The NIST Bangkok girls all currently represent NIST International School, playing in both local tournaments and against International Schools from around the region. This is the first year they have all played together on the touch field – most of whom have a strong background in other sporting fields. In a short time they have transformed into a team who know how to take a few risks, play fast yet fair and most importantly have some fun and enjoy the game!
