Bangkok International Softball League Bangkok, Thailand
Welcome participants and spectators to the 20th Annual 2012 Bangkok International Softball Tournament. We are pleased to be back at the picturesque Thai-Polo & Equestrian Club Pattaya, considered by many to be one of the best venues in all of Asia. I’d like to thank Khun Nunthinee, Khun Dominic and Khun Surapol for allowing the Bangkok International Softball League to once again host the Bangkok International Softball Tournament at such an amazing venue. This year I’m expecting 3 days of high caliber international competition with 17 teams coming from China, Indonesia, USA, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Korea and 3 provinces within Thailand. There are new teams from New Delhi, Jakarta, Chiang Mai and Pattaya. The 2012 tournament is a special year for the Singapore River Rats and Korea Guzzlers as it marks their 20th year participation, having never missed a year. BISL would like to congratulate and thank you for all the years of support and good times on and off the field. This will be our 4th year partnering with Easton Sports so once again bat restrictions apply. I would like to thank Armando Delsi and Easton Sports for their continued support as they challenge us to “Bring Ur Skillz”. During your stay in Pattaya please visit and support our official tournament sponsor Angelwitch Pattaya and when you’re in Bangkok stop by The Game a great new sports bar located below Nana BTS and don’t forget to visit Tilac Soi Cowboy Sunday night after the tournament for Sam’s famous BBQ. Special thanks go out to all our official tournament support and sponsors Angelwitch Pattaya and Marq, The Game Bangkok, Tilac Bangkok and Sam, East Coast Athletics, JKL Awards, the Thai-Polo management and grounds crew, Ron Moss with Home Run Bar & Grill and the BISL Board of Directors Kevin Curran, Troy Regis and Ed Sadowski. You all help make this tournament one of the most anticipated events in SE Asia. I look forward to my 3rd year as Tournament Director and more importantly competing with you on the field. To quote the famed boxing referee Mills Lane, “Let’s get it on!”

20th Annual Bangkok Int’l Softball TournamentTournament Playing Rules
1. Pitching Mat. A pitching mat will be used for calling balls and strikes starting with a 1-1 ball/strike count. The pitching mat will be placed in such a manner as to cover the entire plate. For a pitch to be called a strike it must touch the mat. For a player to score, they may touch any part of the mat. Pitch arc height will be 6 to 12 feet. Each batter will be allowed a courtesy foul (i.e. 1 foul after achieving a 2-strike count).
2. Team Roster. All teams must submit an official tournament roster prior to their first game of the tournament. No players may be added to the team after this point without consent of the Tournament Committee. A player must play for only one team.
3. Game Duration. No new inning will start after 60 minutes. However, once the game passes the 60-minute mark, any inning in progress must be completed. There is no time limit in the Championship games.
Umpire note: The umpires are responsible for tracking game time … use the count down clocks
4. Game Time. After the first game each day “game time” for each subsequent game will be 5 minutes after the completion of the previous game. Exceptions will be the decision of the Tournament Committee.
5. Coin Toss. Team representatives will meet at the scorer’s table during the top of the 5th inning of the preceding game to conduct the coin flip and turn in line-ups. If one team does not show up for the coin flip the other will have its choice of being home or visitor.
6. “Hurry-up” Rules. In case of a tie after 7 innings or any new inning begun after the 60 minute time limit has expired, the batter scheduled last in the inning becomes the runner on second base. During all games infield warm-up will be allowed only in the first inning and the pitcher will be limited to 5 warm-up pitches in the first inning and 2 warm-up pitches per inning for the balance of the game. A replacement pitcher will be allowed 5 warm-up pitches at the time of his entry to the pitching position and 2 warm-up pitches for the balance of the game.
7. Courtesy Runners. No courtesy runners will be used. However, up to 2 Extra Players (EP) will be allowed per team per game. Any EP(s) used are subject to ASA substitution rules.
8. Playing Short-Handed. When a team is playing under the short-handed rule, the player preceding the vacant spot in the lineup may not be intentionally walked. At least one pitch must reach the strike mat and be ruled a strike or the “automatic” out will be passed over and the next player in the lineup will become the next batter.
9. Home Runs. There will be no home run limit. However, if a home run is hit over the fence the player is not required to run the bases. In the interest of time he should return immediately to his dugout.
10. Equipment . Players may not wear metal cleats. All bats used in the tournament will be supplied by the tournament sponsor. When a batter enters the batter’s box with or is discovered using a non tournament sponsored bat the batter is out and shall be ejected from the game.As the bats are the sponsor’s property anyone found intentionally damaging a bat will be ejected from the tournament.
11. Commitment Line. There will not be a Commitment Line between 3rd base and home plate. However to maintain a level of safety we will enforce a “Slide or Avoid” rule on all bases at all times.
12. Forfeits. If a team intentionally forfeits a game, it will not be allowed to continue further play in the tournament.
13. Mercy Rule. If a team is winning by 12 or more runs after 4 1/2 or 5 innings, the game is over. Not applicable to final championship games. Mercy Request - If a team is losing by 12 runs or more at any point in any game, they may “request” mercy at which point the game is over and the score at that time will stand.
14. Protests. All protests will be resolved before play resumes. Protests must be based on rule interpretation, not judgment calls.
15. Base Stealing. There will be no Base Stealing.
16. Facility Damage. Any individual who propels a ball by any means (batting, throwing, etc.) which hits and damages the restroom facility beyond left field of field #3 will be subject to a fine of 2,000 Thai Baht payable at the time of the incident to the event organizers.
17. The solution to any situation that arises during the course of the tournament which may be deemed as unique, special or unusual and is not specifically covered in these ground rules will be left up to the tournament committee.
This tournament will be operated under the guidelines of the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) supplemented with the following local ground rules:

The Guzzlers Softball Club
First of all, THANKS to Gary and his staff for the monumental job they do in making this tournament happen! We are real happy that the tournament will be held in Pattaya once again! Not that we would have been unhappy if it was in Bangkok of course. The Guzzlers are always happy to be back in Thailand, the site of our first international tournament back in 1992! Wow! 20 years! As charter members of this tournament we truly feel as though the ball fields in the land of smiles are our home fields. No matter what fields those may be or how wet they are! So we are packed up our softball bags and our Guzzlers coins and getting ready to join the party!
We come in this year with a combination seasoned Bangkok veterans and new faces. I’m sure that our first timers will live up to our proud reputation for playing hard both on and off the field and contribute heavily to the economic success of the establishments on the Walking Street! Once again we come with our traditional goals of making new friends, party-ing with old friends, playing quality softball, and having the time of our lives! So let’s lace up the cleats, put on our work gloves and cut the rock!
We owe a debt of gratitude to our sponsors who make these trips possible: DRASH and Johny’s Gems Bangkok. Thanks to all the people who help out in so many ways and make my job easier!

Regardless of the out-come one thing is for certain, this team is here to entertain. The Jack Daniels will be stiff, beers flowing and vodka chillin. As this tournament continues to reign supreme we would like to thank our tournament sponsors for their support, Tilac Bar and The Game Bangkok. When you’re in Bangkok make sure to visit both venues. A special thanks goes out to Khun Nuntinee, Khun Dominic and Khun Surapol of the Thai-Polo Club for an amazing venue and set-up! Long Live His Majesty the King!

Team Chiang Mai represents the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai and has been quickly stitched together just in time to make our inaugural appearance at the legendary BISL Tournament.
The 2012 Team Chiang Mai roster consists of players from the local Chiang Mai talent pool, some of whom have been playing pick-up softball together on Sundays for years. We are teachers, NGO volunteers, professionals, business people, students and retirees all connected by our passion for playing ball. On a good day, our home field in Chiang Mai is a divot-filled patch of dirt and scrub littered with cow droppings so it goes without saying that playing on a groomed and more predictable polo field even just for a few days will be a real treat…even if there are horse turds!
Thanks goes out to Gary Stewart for welcoming us into what we hope to be our first of many BISL Tournaments! We look forward to the competition and camaraderie both on and off the field!

Once again, the peripatetic Hong Kong Turkeys make their annual migratory journey to Bangkok. Thanks to an infusion of youthful exuberance combined with their customary veteran crustiness, these Turkeys defy Mother Nature with their predatory nature. As charter member of the annual Bangkok tourney over the years the Turkeys have developed a close bond with softball brothers in Thailand and are excited to have a few join the gobbling flock for this weekend of sun, ball, and fun!
When it comes to the BISL International, the Turkeys have always had two simple mottos: Any trip to Thailand is a good trip and a beer in hand is worth two in the bush. So win or lose, it has already been a good trip. Cooped up in their cozy bandbox of a ball yard in Hong Kong, the Turks are looking forward to frolicking on Pattaya’s sprawling fields. Well, at least the younger Turks do.
The Turkeys would like to thank the organizing committee and everyone else who make this tournament one of the top softball gatherings in the world. M’goi sai Thailand!

Finally we can join this tournament. We have a chance in the past, but many of our players join the National Team. It’s been an honour for Silverbacks to be part of the 2012 Bangkok Internatio nal Softball Tournament.
Silverbacks is one of the Indonesian team who has the long history since 90’s started with part of Arco Company activities, after that switch to Santa Fe, Devon and Petrochina in Jakarta Softball Association League (JSA League). Nowadays, we are fully independent, doesn’t depend to any company.
With present player composition and high team spirit, we’ll not let any teams stop us to win the Championship. The GORHIN’s

Psycho Koalaz is the name of the former Jakarta league team Santa Fe which is now sponsored by Thomas LaBrie, who was the main instigator behind the team name &logo getting a bit of an Aussie slant to it…….I mean the Koala bit not the motto!!
For this tournament, the team consists of players from the Psycho Koalaz, Blok Mads and GiantsJakarta league teams plus 2 Filipino players. The team is sponsored by the SEA Tournament Committee and Thomas LaBrie, who we thank them for helping us get a team to Thailand for the first time for 3 years.
For most of our players it will be their first visit to Pattaya. The team is looking forward to the trip with plenty of softball and the chance to catch up with old softball friends again. Thanks to Gary and the rest of the Tournament Committee for organizing this tournament again this year.

Two more years and counting….until the historic Fattboyz 20th Year Reunion Party at the world famous Tilac Bar. How Fattabulous will that party be?? I do not know but until then, the Fattboyz will continue to “Storm the Orient” behind our fearless leader Thomas “I luv jungle monkeys” LaBrie and Brian “kissing babies” Henderson. This year will mark the second straight year at the Thai Polo Club in Pattaya. Although this is a very nice venue for softball, we are looking forward to getting back to playing softball in Bangkok in the near future. This year’s Fattboyz will once again have a few new faces, a few old faces, and a few crafty veterans. We would like to welcome back long time Fattboy Bobby “I like to watch” Henry. Bobby has been with the Fattboyz since inception. In fact, he played on the Singapore Islanders back in the late 80’s. The Singapore Islanders began international competition in 1984 playing in Guam, Seoul, Manila, Bangkok, Jakarta and Sumatra. These were our forefathers as this team was the base for the creation of the Fattboyz. So if you are in Bangkok after the tournament, please come sit with us at our favorite watering holes, Tilac Bar, Sam’s 2000 or the Penalty Spot on Soi 29 and have a few drinks, tell some of your best stories of fun, glory and plain old lies. For those who could not make it, we wish them well and hope to see them on the field again soon.
In Loving Memory of….Erika Delsi Dec 29, 2007 – Mar 24, 2012

Shanghai BlackoutsWe’re black and we’re proud. Launched in 2009, the Shanghai Blackouts are a staple in the Shanghai Softball League, which is no doubt the best in all of Asia. Proudly sponsored by Asia’s #1 DJ (who was famously “cleated” in the neck during last year’s tourney) we will make sure that if we can’t beat you we’ll buy up all the cold beers so you have to drink piss warm ones. We definitely take pride in how much we can and do imbibe in the name of a good time, so there is a decent chance we don’t even remember being in Thailand. Chicks dig us. Our sponsors love us. Umpires are happier when we’re gone.

Shanghai StepdadsWe’ve been around since the earliest days of Shanghai softball -- we’re talking 90s here -- and have been lucky to keep the core members intact for a long period of time. We still have a few young guys but nowadays are mostly old married geezers. We, as most teams around, use the Asian softball tourney scene to escape significant others for a weekend under the premise of competitive play.

Saigon MonkeysThe Saigon International Softball League is very proud to be represented in Pattaya by the Saigon Monkeys with our sister team, The Buffalos. The Monkeys have been busy traveling this year, playing in the Pangaea Cup in Clark, the SEA tournament in Jakarta, and returning to this very enjoyable tournament in Thailand. We’re coming off our most successful finish in the 1st Annual Saigon International Softball Tournament back in September when we walked away with some hardware by winning the Red Division Championship.
Having survived the Bangkok traffic to get to the fields 2 years ago, we’re pleased to return to the stress-free, beach life of Pattaya to slap doubles, round 3rd base, and get home safely. We’re going to do most of our walking on Walking Street and let our big bats do the talking elsewhere.
Our roster includes some washed up knuckle ballers and a few hot headed rooks with something to prove. They join the usual field of all-stars to comprise a team that we’re very happy to be a part of.
A big thanks to the organizers for providing us with another memorable tournament. We’re looking forward to spending time with our friends on the field and in the bars. A big Vietnamese cheers to all: MOT, HAI, BA… DOI! Go Monkeys!

Saigon Buffalo saigon

The Buffalo are back again for another shot at glory, or at least one or two glorious nights on the town. While the odds of taking home some hardware may be slim, Vegas has us as strong favorites for the nightly battles on Walking Street.
We arrive with pretty much the same squad as last year. Our random group of characters that we threw together for out first tournament here 3 years ago has turned into the finely tuned machine you see before you today. Well, not quite “finely tuned”. Probably more like “runs good but needs some work”. Regardless its been a great ride and we hope to keep it going for years to come.
Once again a big thanks to Gary and the tournament committee for having us. As always we look forward to seeing old friends and making some new ones! Let’s do this!!!
