The “Goal” of the Bangladesh Tobacco Control Research Network is to promote a “culture” that motivates researchers to be involved in tobacco control research
The Network was formed in 2013 with the overall purpose of developing a local evidence-based research repository to enhance effective tobacco control policy development and implementation.

In Bangladesh, tobacco control related research had not been a popular topic within the academic community and there was no platform where potential tobacco control researchers could get support and guidance
Against this backdrop, BCCP with technical support from the Institute for Global Tobacco Control based at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, USA took the initiative of establishing the Network.

• The initiative of developing the Network was shared at the Research Network Kick-off Meeting held in April 2013
• More than hundred participants expressed their solidarity and signed expressing their interest to be members
• Selected network members were involved in the award selection progress and in the Dissemination Conferences
• The network has started the process to get legal status.

• Review Bangladesh-specific tobacco control related research activities and identify gaps
• Document and disseminate tobacco control research findings that can be used to enhance support for tobacco control policy development and implementation
• Serve as a resource for partners, implementers, activists and the Government with respect to tobacco control research and provide tacit knowledge/experiential learning.

• Identify strategic partners for tobacco control-related research
• Organize tobacco control research conferences, scientific seminars and meetings
• Assist members in documenting research findings, lessons learned and best practices, and publishing journal articles
• Establish a resource center
• Organize research capacity building workshops.

Since 2013, 25 students and 25 experienced researchers (out of 300 applicants) were awarded grants to generate local evidence through BCCP.

The Network provides a platform to the researchers to extend support and guidance
The Network has created an enabling environment for tobacco control research in Bangladesh
Different stakeholders including the government are using the research findings generated through the grant program
A couple of studies have been published in the international journals and some are in progress
The Network, with support from BCCP, is on its way to establish itself to sustain the capacity building initiative and co-fund research grant program.
