Economic / Social Status

Bangladesh is ranked as the 48th largest economy in the world. The economy has been growing 6-7% over the past few years despite inefficient state-owned enterprises, delays in exploiting natural gas resources, insufficient power supplies, and slow implementation of economic reforms

The Dowry for marriages in villages are extremely hurtful to the economy. Where brides would pay large amounts of money to their husbands for marriage. Sometimes these amounts can be a years salary.

Government

• Executive

The President is the head of state , and is also a figure head. The real power belongs to the Prime Minister, who is actually the head of government. The president is elected by the legislature every five years and has normally limited powers that are substantially expanded during the tenure of a caretaker government, mainly in controlling the transition to a new government

• The 345 members are elected by universal suffrage at least every 5 years. Universal suffrage is the right to vote regardless of race, sex, belief, intelligence, or economic or social status.

Solutions / Plans for Improvement

For better or for worse

Page 24: Bangladesh Peter, Stan, Jackson, Tony, Chiyeng, Sire

Solutions for Social Problems of Bangladesh

• Ban prostitution• Ban child labor• Train more adults to work• Localize more schools throughout the country• Increase quality of education not just academically, but

socially and morally (for prevention of social injustices)• Encourage emigration from the country (transfer students)• Clean up infrastructure• Get rid of the corruption of the government and put it

under more stable control

Environmental Solutions

• Rubber Trees- only takes 2-3 years to grow until it produces rubber, it is a potential source for honey, seeds can be made into oil for lubricant such as soap, it acts as a "carbon sink" . Also it can be used for timber/furniture because after 30 years, the tree stops producing rubber

• Bio-Gas, can raise standard of living, such as, provide electricity, provide heating, water heating, and cooking. It can also decrease amount of pollution because it uses animal wastes and water to create methane gas

Economic Solutions

• Dowry should be removed or not required. If people in villages use marriage as a way to make profit, then it goes against ethics and deprives many families with money and a way to support their family.

• If the country finds faster ways and more efficient ways to exploit resources, the country would fare better profit wise.

• Switch to using solar energy and dams to power factories and industry to make finished products quicker. This way, the environment is not hurt and profits will rise.

• Too much of the country's economic profit is from services, this should be changed and make the primary focus, industry.

10 Year Plan• If our country wishes to succeed, we must improve our education

system and improve our literacy rate up to 93 percent in the next 10 years. A 5 percent increase each year.

• To succeed in today's economy, we must produce what the world needs. While not harming the environment, we must import raw materials and export finished goods with higher profit.

• Export more than 25 billion a year.

• Extracting resources from the Earth must be quicker and more efficient. Spend about 3-5 billions dollars on technology that extracts resources more efficiently and does not waste any extra resources.

• Employ a cleaning force of 1 million to clean up cities and high ways. To improve sanitation.

• Ban pesticides and comply with the EPA's regulations.

–Enforce a legal team to ban all prostitution and child labor. If we wish to be a great country, we must be a modern civilized country.

–If we want more workers and make more money, we must have better training programs for adults and create better jobs. We wish to raise the average salary of each worker to 5000 USD a month in the next 10 years, through job creation and job training.

–Enforce more Environmental Regulations and improve the quality of water, living and the quality of our life.

– Grow 1 million rubber trees in the period of 10 years, this will help our economy greatly and environmentally.

–Invest 10 billion dollars on fixing the countries water supply and sanitation. This will be run by the Sanitation work force and be carried out in the next 10 years.
