Over the next month branches all over town will unleash a bevy of fundraising bake sales, barbecues, raffles and auctions in an effort to outdo their counterparts. The deadline is Sunday May 1, when they take their battle to the streets. That’s when teams from BMO, CIBC, HSBC, RBC, Scotiabank and TD put their mettle to the test on Lakeshore Road in the sixth annual Birmingham Bank Bed Challenge. Renamed to posthumously honour the race’s founder Bruce Birmingham, who died July 2010, the family is matching every donation, dollar for dollar, made to this year’s campaign. On May 1, the team that pushes its decorated gurney and passenger posing as patient across the finish line first claims the coveted title as the fastest. “It’s not about winning market share, it’s about the community ,” said Brian Wood, man- ager of the downtown TD bank. Wood faced the sobering reality of the need for new hospital beds last year, when his 12-year-old son, who was the team passenger last year, faced emergency surgery for appendi- citis. He is personally determined to outdo TD’s own record haul of $33,000 last year, which is enough to buy three hospital beds — and unseat the Bank Bed Challenge race champions for the past two years, and top fundraisers for the past five years, Scotiabank.
