ABOUT BANKWEST STADIUM

Bankwest Stadium was delivered by Infrastructure NSW, funded by the NSW Government, and designed to deliver an unbeatable game day experience for all spectators; from the atmosphere, proximity to the action, and world-class provision of facilities.

The stadium seats 30,000, with capacity for 40,000 spectators in concert mode; and uses 360-degree LED screens to create a wall of colour and sound for spectators, who are sitting as close to the field as possible, with the best sightlines for a rectangular field in Australia.

Design and construction partner, Lendlease, in collaboration with project architect Populous, began demolition of the existing stadium in January 2017. The project was designed and built with the spectator and local community at the forefront of its inception and pays homage to the manufacturing and industrial heritage of the Parramatta and greater Western Sydney area.

THE BANKWEST STADIUM DELIVERS AN UNRIVALLED GAME DAY EXPERIENCE, A PROJECT DESIGNED TO DELIVER A STADIUM FOR EVERYONE.

SUSTAINABILITY CASE STUDY

A STADIUM MADE LOCALLY

AND SUSTAINABLY

The stadium’s vision focused on being an essential part of the community, not just in design, but the construction and its materials. Bankwest Stadium is made from Australian steel, manufactured by by Southern Steel Supplies in Milperra and has been fabricated by several local Western Sydney businesses.

The local steel is exposed alongside concrete and celebrated in its natural form. The bolted connections reduced the need for site welding, reducing construction time, and improving the quality of the paint finish. Painting of the steel structure was completed offsite by several local Western Sydney businesses.

The steel assemblies were also designed to be transported via a standard lorry and assembled on the pitch before being moved into place within the stadium. This meant local streets remained open and safe during construction while also reducing the construction time.

At the stadium’s peak of construction approximately 400 people were on site each day to deliver the project and over $60 million spent in construction goods and services sourced from Western Sydney businesses.

“IT’S BEEN A PRIVILEGE TO LEAD THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS WONDERFUL NEW SPORTING FACILITY AND DELIVER IT ON TIME FOR THE WESTERN SYDNEY COMMUNITY ON BEHALF OF INFRASTRUCTURE NSW AND THE NSW GOVERNMENT. “

The roof

Of the 4,500 tonnes of Australian steel that hold up the stadium, 2,600 tonnes hold up the roof structure alone. The 28,000 square metre roof is made with PTFE and ETTE fabric, to allow natural light to filter through to grow the pitch grass and provide spectator coverage from the elements.

The roof also supports the LED sports lights making a safer and easier work platform for maintenance and cleaning, not to mention the 100kWh solar panel system hidden above the fabric line generating renewable energy for the stadium.

Local steel is heroed in the stadium’s structure

The western stand

The western façade, from the ‘west loaded stand’ faces Parramatta Park, is articulated vertically and horizontally to reduce its scale to the park, and enhance the energy efficiency through reducing windows and openings facing west into the setting summer sun.

Significant windows and openings in the western façade are also designed with either external sun protection or planted roof top gardens to minimise heat and prevent glare from entering the building while also providing a connection back to the parklands through green space.

NOT JUST A STADIUM

Bankwest Stadium encourages a strong connection from pitch to park with an activated public domain and community space surrounding the stadium. To service the community outside of event days, the precinct hosts a children’s playgrounds retail cafés and public exercise equipment.

The Boulevard of Legends celebrates the heritage, people and events of Western Sydney and the sporting precinct surrounding the stadium. It is a pedestrian boulevard along the stadium’s northern edge and physically connects O’Connell Street to Parramatta River. The Boulevard is designed to include a series of plaques and in ground interpretations of past, present and future legends, events, people and clubs of the Cumberland Oval and the greater Western Sydney area, and to include future historical moments of the new stadium.

Stadium map and surrounds

A new civic square, where Victoria Road meets the Stadium, provides a vibrant gathering space for festivals, markets, and live events both on and off game-day. A special place for families has been created with the removal of the former Parramatta Stadium maintenance buildings and converted back to grass terraces. The Riverside Terraces are where the stadium meets the river and the park is designed to create special game day experiences, while the fan zone in O’Connell Street’s urban park and promenades create the meeting place for fans to connect before and after the game.

The Stadium has been designed to maximise access to existing quality transport links as well as introduce new shuttle buses to and from the stadium. The access to public transport will only be enhanced with the opening of the Parramatta Light Rail in 2023.

Thinking of the surroundings

The stadium responds to the surrounding areas. The height of the stadium has been designed to ensure it doesn’t impact on views from Old Government House. The training field has been lowered to provide vistas of Old Kings Oval.

The stadium’s steel and concrete structure is exposed and celebrated with bolted connections on show in concourse entries. The exposed precast concrete units provide a distinctive horizontal striped pattern to O’Connell Street.

The Bankwest Stadium Community Open Day on Sunday 14 April 2019 was the first time the venue was showcased, and not only as an events venue but as a major community asset to Western Sydney.

The Community Day welcomed more than 30,000 who toured the stadium and its facilities, and accessed public transport to and from the stadium free of charge.

Transport

There are several transport links to and from the new stadium: trains, buses, shuttle buses, ferry, bicycle and pedestrian routes are integrated into the existing transport links to the stadium.

This seamlessly connects the Stadium, to Parramatta Park and the river. By 2023 the existing public transport routes will also be supplemented by light rail, making game-day and public events easier to explore by both locals and visitors alike.

A safe space

Ensuring a great game day experience also means ensuring a safe experience. Bankwest Stadium is one of the safest stadiums in Sydney with 277 CCTV security cameras placed in and around the venue and monitored from a number of security rooms in the stadium.

The location of family areas and active supporter zones of the old stadium have been incorporated into the new, with the northern end of the stadium catering for the Red and Black Block with convertible safe standing seats including a wall behind the seats to amplifying their singing back into the stadium. The family area, to the south, includes a kids zone behind the seating bowl, with food and beverage offerings catering to a family focused demographic.

Importantly, getting in and out of the stadium at capacity will be quick, with 37 turnstiles and entry points with scanner checks across the stadium, that’s less than 800 people per turnstile at peak times.

One of the stadium’s turnstiles and entrances.

An inclusive space

The stadium has 237 permanent wheelchair accessible seats and 24 wheelchair accessible toilets, 10 in the general admission area. There are also 386 of the 448 female patron toilets in the general admission area alone. The main concourse entry at O’Connell and Victoria Streets is at street level allowing direct access to the general  admission area and universal access amenities on the concourse. Throughout the stadium customer service areas have been designed to provide universal access including low-height counter sections.
