BANNER NEWSLETTER March 17, 2017 As part of the OAISD's FuturePrep or IChallengeYouth program, two BMS students, Katherine Simon and Logan Campbell, and one teacher partnered with United Way of Holland to answer the question: How can we provide affordable housing for low income people of Ottawa County? They were joined by two Saugatuck Middle School students and teacher for a one week program last summer to tackle this tough issue. They came up with some creative solutions that are now being implemented by the United Way of Holland! The group presented their solutions in October to the Board of the United Way, and next week Thursday they will present and roll out their proposal during the annual donor's dinner. The proposal includes an architectural contest for affordable tiny homes to be built in Ottawa County. It also proposes a way to offset the cost of construction using social media for the "No Shelter Challenge." Similar to the ice bucket challenge for ALS awareness and research, participants of the no shelter challenge would attempt to stay the night outside without shelter, or donate to the United Way. Participants would record their attempts, post them to social media, and nominate their friends to do the same. Congratulations to our BMS students for thinking outside the box to help others in their community!

Upcoming Survey

For the past three years, we have been working on accomplishing our district’s long-range planning goals outlined in S.O.A.R. II (Strategic Objectives to Achieve Results). Teams of teachers, administrators and support staff have been focused on specific goals in the areas of Human Services, Operations, and Teaching and Learning. S.O.A.R. II points of pride include, but are not limited to, the development and phased implementation of an elementary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) special, saving millions of taxpayer dollars by renovating a former elementary school, renovating all buildings' front office areas to provide an extra level of security, and expanding community education offerings. A complete report of the many accomplishments can be found on our district’s website.

To continue our great tradition of excellence at Hudsonville Public Schools and to elevate our successes, we are asking for your help in the development of our next strategic plan: S.O.A.R. III. We have completed the first phase of development (Focus Groups) and are very thankful for the wealth of information we received. Our website contains a summary of findings based on this phase.

We are now entering the second phase in the research; a Randomized Needs Assessment Survey. If you receive an invitation to participate, please consider taking part in helping us set the direction for the next three years.

Later in February, we will open the survey to parents and community members who were not part of the random selection process. We will email the link to the survey when it becomes available.

The Hudsonville Athletic Boosters are presenting the GMB/Eagle 5k “Brian Carlson Memorial Run” on March 25, 2017 at 9am. The event will take place at Hudsonville High School with the route running through the City of Hudsonville. Special guest speaker at 8:30am in the gym will be Rebecca Cruttenden. Rebecca is the founder and director of the Team Orphans and the owner of Clara Cookies. She is also a mother of three adopted children and a 6 time Ironman finisher. Come hear her story and see why she is so passionate about helping others.

Be sure to sign up online at www.classicrace.com or visit our website at www.hudsonville5k.com for more information and registration. Online registration only. Packet pickup and late registration will be at Harvest Health March 24 from 4-7pm and Race Day morning from 7am to 8:50am. Be sure to check out and LIKE our Facebook page (GMB Eagle 5k race) also for all updates. All runners will receive lots of post-race refreshments.

CHOIR CHAT:

Please mark on your calendars the date of our Spring Concert. All choirs will be performing at the Hudsonville Fine Arts Auditorium on Thursday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m.

This weekend Hudsonville High School will be performing the musical Godspell at the Hudsonville Fine Arts Auditorium. In this beloved Broadway musical based on the Gospel According to Saint Matthew, a small group of people help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques and hefty doses of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, is employed as the story of Jesus' life dances across the stage. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus' messages of kindness, tolerance and love come vibrantly to life. Boasting a score with chart topping songs, a book by a visionary playwright (John-Michael Tebelak) and a feature film, Godspell is a sensation that continues to touch audiences

Godspell will run on Friday, March 17 - 7:00 p.m., Saturday, March 18 - 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 19 - 3:00 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase at the will call window or through the Hudsonville Public Schools website.

HEAT Middle School Water Polo

Players will be instructed on the skills and strategies of water polo, with a focus placed on fundamentals of the sport.

This is technically a development program for high school water polo, therefore emphasis is on learning the fundamental skills of the game and how to work as a team. Your son or daughter actually learning the sport is a higher priority than

“winning at all costs” (but wins do often follow a greater understanding of the game).

Our Hudsonville teams will play games against other area water polo teams on Saturdays.

Players must be able to swim and tread water to participate (since the sport is played in the pool), however they don’t need to currently be competitive swimmers. With that being said, we do encourage athletes to also participate in

Hudsonville swim programs.

Season

The 2017 middle school water polo season starts on Monday, March 20th (first practice), and runs through May 20th (final tournament). Practices—which are co-ed—run from 6:00 – 8:00PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings.

Tournaments are held at various local schools every Saturday from April 15th – May 20th.

Student-Athletes

6th - 8th grade Boys & Girls

Players should be able to swim and tread water, however they don’t need to be current competitive swimmers.

If your player can swim in the deep end and play catch with a ball while treading, then they are ready. It is our job to teach them the rest of the skills they will need.

Players should be able to successfully swim at least one lap of the pool using the front crawl stroke (“freestyle”) without stopping.

It is important that those students considering playing high school water polo participate in HEAT Water Polo in 6th - 8th grade. Whereas this is not required, players who do not are certainly at a disadvantage at the high school level.

Cost

$80 participation fee paid online or check to Hudsonville Community Education for those with 10 volunteer hours

$110 participation fee for those who do not have 10 volunteer hours.

Hudsonville Public Schools Annual Education Report

The Annual Education Report (AER) is designed to meet state and federal requirements for reporting to parents and communities. The report provides detailed data on state administered student assessment results,

accountability results, teacher qualification information, and the state results for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).

Parents and the community can access AER information for the district and individual schools by clicking on the Annual Education Report tab on our website. If you have any questions regarding the AER information,

please contact your child’s building principal or the district curriculum office at 616-669-1740 extension 4.
