Lions District 25-F Newsletter, October 2018 Page 2 of 10

Thank you Clubs for sending your activities information to PDG Jack Salsbery and getting them into the newsletter. Com-munications is our best way to keep in touch with each other. There is so much going on around the District, it is amazing what Clubs are doing in their communities. Below are reminders for our members and Clubs.

Send a list of your Club’s events by the 20th of each month and it should include events for the next six weeks. This should in-clude Club name, the date, the event, where it will be held, if food is sold, and if it is one price, list that, if there are various food prices just say “prices vary”. One of my subtle mottos is “Get the Word Out”.

Please check out the Governor’s Facebook page for upcoming information of happenings in the District.

Here are upcoming dates that I would hope that my Fellow Li-ons would place on their calendar and attend to meet and greet with Lions from around the District.

• Fall Cabinet Meeting: Saturday, October 6th sponsored by the Middletown Lions Club held at Shenandoah High School on St. Rd. 36 Middletown, In. 47356. I do hope to see many Lions there. The registration form is with this newsletter.

• Winter Cabinet Meeting: Saturday, Feburary 9th spon-sored by the Edinburgh Lions Club. Venue TBD.

What We May Have Learned 1st VDG Don Mullen

By now we have presumably considered the questions of being catalysts for making our clubs younger and doing the research necessary for us to understand what it may take for us to move forward in acknowledging this goal. Presuming we did our research, what should we have learned? Hope-fully, this information, regardless of the recruitment meth-od we use, allows us to begin to form a recruitment strategy that will help any given club to move forward.

Some of what we may have learned could have been that volunteer engagement evolves generation to generation. We may have learned the younger generation, millennials, if you will, really do volunteer and contribute. We may have learned that millennials’ activities and life goals are aligned so as to satisfy their need to be connected to the purpose of the activity. We may have learned that while there are dif-ferences between the two generations, they can still work in concert to serve the community. We may have learned that understanding and acknowledging these differences, the older group’s sense of value is not threatened, while the younger group’s new voice will not be dismissed.

We may have learned that by working together only makes us stronger. We may have learned that we each volunteer to and join based on our own desires and not by the wishes of others. If we have learned all this and more, would it not follow we can begin to understand the volunteer mo-tives and likes of the prospective new younger member? Wouldn’t it then logically follow that we can begin to inves-tigate and understand what the millennial sees as a worth-while organization or cause with which to become associat-ed? Would it not follow that as Lions who understand that part of our responsibility as Lions is to secure its future, that we then act to preserve our clubs by involving younger generations?

Don Mullen, 1st Vice District Governor District 25 F

Guiding Lions What they do, who can become one, & how to get certified.

The Guiding Lion Program is designed to assist clubs that are newly chartered, established or determined as priority designation. Especially if an existing club has exhausted all of their efforts to grow the club they may request the help of a guiding Lion - this extra set of eyes maybe able to offer suggestions not tried or thought of by the club. Guiding Lions are assigned for a two-year term by the district gover-nor in consultation with the sponsoring or established club president but that time can be reduced by either party. Guiding Lions are limited to serving no more than two new clubs at any point in time.

Guiding Lions assist a club to:

* Be successful in its first two years of operation * Orient and train club officers and members * Motivate and support club growth and development * Locate resources available to assist the club

To be a guiding Lion one must have completed a term as club President and then complete the guiding Lion certification course. Guiding Lions are encouraged to complete the Certified Guiding Lion Course to improve their skills in club support.

To become certified the course can be completed individu-ally or facilitated by an instructor. All Certified Guiding Lions are required to take the Certified Guiding Lion (CGL) every three years.

If a member is interested in becoming a guiding Lion con-tact me (PCC Reed Fish, District Global Leadership team) with any questions.

Is the inner teacher in you wanting to get out? The LCI Faculty Development Institute is now accepting applica-tions for this year's training session. Applications can be found on the LCI website - search for Faculty Develop-ment. Information about the class is as follows;

Purpose of the Faculty Development Institute (FDI):

To develop and expand the number of skilled Lions facul-ty for use in training at club, district, and multiple district levels. Completion of this institute will enable Lions to apply to the Lions Certified Instructor Program (LCIP).

Participant Qualifications:

1. Candidates for this institute must be from Constitu-tional Area I & II - United States of America, Its Affiliates, Bermuda & The Bahamas & Canada. This institute will be conducted in English. Candidates must be capable of un-derstanding and participating in the selected language of instruction at this institute.

2. Candidates should have experience serving as instruc-tors for Lions training events. This experience should in-clude using PowerPoint to support training delivery. (Note: Participants will not be expected to create any ma-terials while at the FDI, but it will be necessary to use PowerPoint and other provided materials for some activi-ties.)

3. Candidates must be willing to commit to a three-day institute, including classroom sessions and meals, and un-derstand that personal time is extremely limited. Attend-ance at all classroom sessions and scheduled meals is man-datory.

4. Lions participating in this three-day course will be re-quired to conduct a local training event within six months of the institute, in order to complete the FDI.

Cost of the Institute:

Lions Clubs International will provide meals and lodging according to the schedule of the institute. In compliance with board policy, a non-refundable participation fee of US$150.00 will be required to offset a portion of these costs. This fee will be due no less than six weeks prior to the institute start date. Please do not send fees until you receive a letter of acceptance to the institute. Participants

Do I Matter? 2nd VDG Ken Faulkner

I was speaking with a co-worker and he asked me if man-agement thought he would be missed if he just left. I would miss him if he left but I couldn’t answer him about management.

I started thinking about how do Lions know that they mat-ter? When I was a brand new Lion, I was thanked over & over by our Club President, Fundraising Chairperson, & Service Activity Chair along with many others. Then I volunteered to do District activities and was thanked by a multitude of District Officers as well as many others. With September gone & our Club’s biggest service pro-ject/fundraiser over, I know that there were many who were thanked.. But the biggest thank you of all was when our Club was thanked by many Clermont residents & those who attended. No matter whom internally we thanked or thanked us as Lions, the biggest and best Thank You of all was from the COMMUNITY!

So Lions do you matter? ABSOLUTELY ! Do you need thanked? ABSOLUTELY!!! It means you matter.

And from the District Governor as well as his team, THANK YOU FOR ALLTHAT YOU DO!

Lion Ken Faulkner, 2VDG, District 25F

Banner Night Lion Patricia Bigham, Cabinet Treasurer

Well, Banner Night 2018 is in the history books! I believe it was a fun, relaxing, down on the farm type of night. PDG Bill Uhrig and Lion Yvette Glenn won the best farmer outfits, receiving John Deere key chains for the prize. There was not a top winner for the crossword puzzle of "How Well Do You Know DG Ron", except for Leader Dog, as all proceeds collected will be contributed to that project. Lion Pauline and LD Satch were the guest speakers.

With the help of family and friends, I want to thank every-one who contributed, and especially all the Lions who gave up their Saturday night to spend it with us.

Now we move on to Cabinet Meeting on October 6, 2018 at Middletown, IN. Hope to see everyone there.

Patricia Bigham, CT

DCF 20th ANNIVERSARY GRANT HELPS BRIGHT LIONS CLUB BUY SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR STUDENTS IN NEED

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind., August 17, 2018 – The Dearborn Community Foundation (DCF), Inc. recently awarded a $1,000 Lau-ren Hill Make A Difference Grant to Bright Lions Club to help fund its backpack program to buy school supplies for students in need. As a part of its 20th Anniversary Celebration, DCF is awarding 20 proactive grants of $1,000 each to charitable organizations in Dearborn County throughout 2018. Each of the Foundation’s 15 volunteer Board members gets to recommend a grant. Five lucky attendees at DCF’s 20th Anniversary Dinner in late July also were randomly drawn to recommend a $1,000 grant. The $1,000 grant to the Bright Lions Club was recommended by DCF Board member Karen Blasdel. She chose to recommend the grant to the Lions Club backpack program because the organization has a strong presence in the Bright community and “I knew they would use the funds to help less fortunate kids.”

“The Lions Club has always recognized the community’s needs and then worked to fill those needs,” said Blasdel. “I liked the idea of the backpack program because it would di-rectly impact those that could use a little help the most.” The Lions Club partnered with North Dearborn Pantry, whose volunteers implemented the program. “It’s very fulfilling to know DCF has helped the Lions Club and North Dearborn Pantry provide aid students, who otherwise would not have had supplies to start the school year,” said Blasdel. For 20 years, DCF, a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt public charity, has helped donors’ dreams come true by safeguarding endow-ments for the community through contributions large and small. Grants awarded by the Dearborn Community Founda-tion support the needs and interests in Dearborn County in the fields of Art, Culture and Humanities, Community and Public Benefit, Education, Environment and Animal Protection, Hu-man Services, Public Safety and Youth Programs.

In January 2009, DCF received the nation’s highest philan-thropic standards for operational quality, integrity and ac-countability: the seal of approval from the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations Program operated by the Council on Foundations (COF), a national professional associ-ation based in Washington, D.C. DCF was reconfirmed for the National Standards by the COF in 2014.

To learn more about DCF, call 812-539-4115, stop by the office at 322 Walnut Street in Lawrenceburg, or visit the Foundation web-site at www.dearborncf.org. If you are interested in making a contribution to DCF, visit our website’s “Give Now” page to donate on line and to learn other giving options.

Help Needed: VOPA !

Lions, Your help is needed! There is a bill in Congress called the Volunteer Organization Protection Act that needs to be acted on by our legislatures before it "dies" due to lack of support. What is VOPA?

The Volunteer Organization Protection Act of 2017 impacts every Lion in the United States.

Under current law, service clubs have been forced to dissolve when they have been unable to afford the costs of litigation resulting from a volunteer's negligence or just being included with other parties in a lawsuit. VOPA can help protect your club from being drawn into lawsuits should an accident occur during a Lions Club service activi-ty or event.

How You Can Help:

Clubs can make the most impact by completing a petition with as many members signing it as possible. Since this impacts all volunteer organizations asking other groups (Rotary, Kiwanis, churches etc) in the community to sign the petition would help increase the numbers.

Templates for the petition and more details can be found on the Li-ons International website, ( Lionsclubs.org<http://lionsclubs.org> ) and search for volunteer organization protection. There is a template for a letter to accompany the petition as well as an option for members to find their local representative and send an "email petition" to them.

Please contact DG Ron Bigham or PCC Reed Fish with any ques-tions.

Mid-Winter Conference Rede-signed, Rescheduled, and Sim-plified for Lions’ Convenience

Going back to its roots, this year’s Mid-Winter Conference will return to the 2nd weekend in January (Jan. 11-12, 2019). MWC organizers realized that the November timetable had too many conflicts with Lions events throughout the state, and the rela-tively free January calendar dates offered a better opportunity for attendance. This year’s committee also took a long hard look at the entire event and have made numerous adjustments. What had been a confusing mixture of one and two-hour semi-nars and workshops that made some attendees to miss some topics of interest, this year’s schedule has been simplified. The number of seminars has been reduced to 16 one-hour programs, and all will be held Saturday morning. Each Lion attending the MWC can choose four of the 16 sessions to attend. The Confer-ence ends with a luncheon, featuring a keynote speaker that should be informative, as well as entertaining for all Lions.

Final details on the exact seminar titles have not been finalized, but look for topics such as: How to organize your district’s (club’s) eyeglass recycling; Marketing Communications Specialist- What should that person do?; Membership recruiting- New efforts for clubs to consider; Anyone can make baked beans- An answer to ‘We’ve always done it that way!’; Leverage community partnerships to maximize your fundraising and service activities; Looking at the new MyLion. New presenters, including several from outside Indiana, have been scheduled to bring new, re-freshing information.

The committee also moved the venue to the Crowne Plaza Ho-tel & Conference Center, located at the Indianapolis Interna-tional Airport. All activities will be inside this facility, making it easy for attendees to park and remain there for both Friday and Saturday activities. Changes in fees at the public schools in Plainfield would have increased our fees substantially to use those facilities, plus the meeting rooms and conference areas at the Crowne Plaza are much more accommodating and comfort-able for attendees.

The Friday night entertainment will feature comedian Craig Tornquist, from Mishawaka, Indiana. Tornquist has given more than 3000 presentations to corporations, organizations, churches and other groups throughout the county. His act is completely family friendly and promis-es to get the audi-ence involved, in-cluding some really

rotten (his words) prizes.

At Saturday’s luncheon, Jessica Michna (a.k.a. Helen Keller) will pre-sent an exciting and informative pro-gram. Jessica does an impersonation of part of the famous speech that Keller made to the Lions at the Inter-national Convention in Sandusky, Ohio in 1925. She goes on to relate much of Keller’s life, going over the hurdles and triumphs she encoun-tered.

Also featured at the MWC is a new service project, ‘Sock-it-to-me’. Lions are encouraged to bring socks, scarves and mittens to the conference. Following the event, they will be given to the District Governors to take back and give away to the needy in their districts.

Information has already been appearing on the Lions Facebook page, Indiana Lions Mid-Winter Conference. Be sure to visit the page, Like and Share it. Many more details will appear as they become available.
