As the season of Lent begins, our students and staff at St. Benedict will focus on our Lenten journeys with Prayer, Almsgiving and Fasting. Unfortunately, the weather prevented us from participating as a school in Ash Wednesday Mass this past week, but we will have many opportunities to enter into Lent. Every day, we pray together as a school, in the classrooms and at weekly Mass.

Students can give alms for our CFCA sponsored child, Amparo Hernandez from San Benito, El Salvador. Amparo is now 14 years old. Also, families are collecting for Operation Rice Bowl through Catholic Relief Services. Students are encouraged to fast from the time spent on their phones, on social media or playing online games and to spend more time with family and friends.

Our students will also lead Stations of the Cross every Friday of Lent at 2:00 p.m. The Jr. High students will lead the prayers and reflection every week. On March 18, our 8th graders will lead Shadow Stations for our school and parish community at 1:30 p.m. and again at

As we enter into preparations for Easter through the season of Lent, please remember that we have several resources to assist with daily reflections.

At the Masses this past weekend we made available for each household a booklet with daily stories and reflectionsby Fr. Thomas Connery. He is the same author of the Advent booklet. He provides a good combination of down-to-earth stories, meaningful prayers and either reflection questions or suggestions for ways of putting our faith and reflections into practice.

We also continue to have additional copies of The Word Among Us either at the magazine rack at St. Benedict or on the table in the back of Sts. Peter & Paul. This daily devotional booklet bases the reflections upon the readings of daily Mass and the weekend Masses. The booklet that is available now covers the whole of Lent (usually it is a monthly booklet).

Finally, the book by Matthew Kelly, Rediscover Jesus, is

7:00 p.m. This is a beautiful and prayerful way to enter into Holy Week!

St. Benedict will host an OPEN HOUSE for all interested families on Tuesday, March 15, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Come and tour the school, meet the faculty and staff, talk with other school parents and learn more about our K-8 experience.

Kindergarten screening will be Friday, April 1. Families can sign up at the Open House or by calling the school to schedule a time: 740-432-6751.

Once again, St. Benedict will serve as a Provider for the Ed-Choice Expansion Scholarship program.Students entering grades K-3 for the 2016-2017 school year can qualify for a full tuition scholarship if the income guidelines are met. Families need to register their students at St. Benedict before applying for this scholarship. Please contact me at the school or go to http://www.education.ohio.gov/edchoice.

a book that has brief 1-2 page chapters for reading each day during Lent. There is a Bible verse to memorize or to reflect upon as well as a reflection question for each day. He also has a 1-2 minute video based on the chapter and a witness reflection given by a different person each day available at the Dynamic Catholic website. Go to this link for the video: www.dynamiccatholic.com and click on the “Best Lent Ever” link.

We are also planning a discussion group on this book and its reflection questions and resources on Monday eveningsat 7:00 p.m. at the Sts. Peter & Paul Rectory in Lore City. The Stations of the Cross will be prayed there at the Oratory at 6:30 p.m., followed by this Rediscover Jesus discussion group. I plan to be there starting at 5:45 p.m. for confessions on February 22nd, 29th and March 7th.

May the Lord help us to continue journeying together ever more joyfully, always ready for the gift of eternal life.

READINGS FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENTFebruary 21, 2016

The Gospel story of the transfiguration of Jesus awakens in each one of us a call to transformation. As we continue our Lenten journey, let us resolve to turn from our sinful ways as we carry the cross of discipleship that will lead us to the glory of the resurrection.

Our readings focus on God’s promise of salvation. This salvation is seen in the first reading as the promised land. In the Transfiguration, Jesus shows us the glory to which we are ultimately called. Peter, James and John saw a glimpse of the Resurrected Jesus, and of our future glory. We will live in light and splendor. This revelation is accompaniedby its requirement__Listen to Him, for He is the One promised by God.

Genesis 15:5-12, 17-18The Lord God took Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars if you can. Just so shall your descendants be.”- Name some of the blessings He has given you and you have failed to give thanks for.

Philippians 3:17-4:1Stand firm in the Lord.- When have events in your life shaken your faith?

Luke 9:28-36Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my chosen Son, listen to him.”- How have you experienced the Word of God being addressed to you?

The Gospel Readings for the first five Sundays in Lent, Year C, are the following. For the most part the focus is on the Gospel of Luke, although one of the Gospels is from the Gospel of John:

1st Sunday – The Temptation of Jesus in the Desert2nd Sunday – The Glorious Transfiguration of Jesus on a mountain in Galilee 3rd Sunday – News of tragedies and the parable of the fig tree not bearing fruit4th Sunday – The parable of the Prodigal Son 5th Sunday – The woman caught in adultery (Gospel of John)

We can see a key transition unfolding in these Gospels. At the beginning of Lent the focus is initially on Jesus in terms of his strength in the face of temptation and his glorious connection with God the Father. Then the shift moves toward the patient strength, courage and abundance of Jesus’ mercy.

So, next week’s Sunday Readings continue this week’s focus on who Jesus is. Jesus is the faithful Son of God the Father. Seeing him gloriously transfigured, conversing with Moses and Elijah, served to give the Apostles Peter, James and John the encouragement they needed as they were beginning the next steps of the unfolding of Jesus’ mission. Soon after this event, in this same chapter 9 of St. Luke’s Gospel, Jesus announced to his disciples that they were to go to Jerusalem. St. Luke writes, “[Jesus] resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem.”

As we begin Lent, may we, likewise, be encouraged by the foreshadowing of the Resurrection that we see in next week’s Gospel. May we be encouraged that Jesus is walking with us resolutely through the days of Lent. All of the Gospels of Lent reinforce the abundance of mercy that Jesus wants us to experience. This mercy, especially in this Year of Mercy, will help us to experience growing freedom from sin.

The council meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Vice Chairman Pat Grubbs. He led the prayer service with Darlene Snider and Dale Hughes reading Scripture Readings for the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time. Coucil members shared a reflection time.

Five members of council were absent from the meeting.

Fr. Paul was pleased with Christmas Mass attendance, with five Masses between St. Benedict and Sts. Peter & Paul Oratory.

Sister Carol wrote and arranged the music for the School Christmas program.

Mike Abbott updated council members of the newly formed ministry of Hospitality and Greeting. Future plans include a welcome committee for home visits to new parishioners.

Stations of the Cross at St. Benedict Church will be offered on Friday afternoons at 2:00 and again on Friday evenings at 6:30, following the Knights of Columbus Fish Dinner.
