From The Governors Chai

Notes From the District Governor: Chaos: we move through it every day in one way

or another. Unplanned things happen to us, things we planned don't go as we thought they would. Something changes or shifts and we find ourselves in the middle of chaos.

Chaos creates change. Chaos forces us to move in a different direction. In the end, when you push through the chaos (and the fear chaos can bring) change occurs, and while we may not be able to see it right away, that change is usually for the better.

On Monday 10/29 chaos came knocking at our door with the name Sandy. She missed us (Thank God) but wreaked havoc in our neighboring districts. Those districts are recovering from a disaster of a magnitude we have not seen in a very long time. While they are picking up the pieces, a number of our club members have reached out to me with ideas on how we can provide assistance. From canned food drives to holiday gift collections, to volunteering disaster relief clean up and recovering efforts - the good hearts and minds of our members have been at work.

If ANY club has a project they want to start to assist our neighboring districts, please let me know. I will make sure all members of our district are kept aware of any efforts initiated and how to get involved.

I have already reached out to 2 of the impacted districts through their Governors to let them know we are willing to help.

November is foundation month and what better way to start off celebrating our Foundation then with the Spirit of Peace Foundation Festival. You can register online at http://7190events.com/. Our special guest, Foundation Chair and Past RI President, Wilf Wilkinsen will be joining us. This promises to be an eventful evening with music, entertainment, excellent food all served with an international flair and Olympic theme. Local Olympians will be on hand to share in our celebration of all we do through the Foundation as a team. The Spirit of Peace will honor all the good work our Rotary Clubs have accomplished through the years.

Our clubs have access to Foundation Grant funds

through two primary vehicles. One is the Matching Grant. These grants are typically larger in scope and require partnerships with clubs and districts that cross international lines. Thus far, we have received an application for an approved one such grant. The grant is being used to purchase much needed medical equipment in Bangladesh and is headed up by the Granville club and the Burnt Hills / Ballston Lake club. We still have approximately $45,000 - $50,000 in our matching grant funds to use this year.

Spend the money - it's there for you to use in projects that spark your interest and serve the population of the community you and your club chooses to serve.

What foundation projects have you participated in that have moved you or given you a Rotary Story? Please share with me you inspirations!

The Chestertown Rotary Club’s 2nd Annual Memory Tree

I encourage your participation in this year’s

effort to recognize those people, past and present, who have made a positive impact on your life. It is an opportunity to remember them, share their name to those around you and at the same time to bring comfort to needy individuals living in the Chestertown Area. Our initial effort last year, helped us provide funding to the local food pantries, assist in supplying fuel to those in need during the heating season as well as provide other necessary support to members of the local community. Take a moment to remember those folks this year by lighting a light on the Chestertown Rotary Club Memory Tree and use their name to help others as they helped you.

If you have any questions or would like

additional copies of the application please contact me at [email protected]. Thank you for your help in this effort. John Hagmann

Immediate Past President Chestertown Rotary Club

Spirit of Peace Festival Entertainers More Entertainers to Perform at Spirit of

Peace Festival Joining the World Rising Stars Dance Team of

Ricardo Sopin and Iraida Volodina performing the Argentine Tango and the magic fingers of Flamenco guitarist John Pezzulo, we welcome Kismet and the Wild Irish Acres Dancers.

The dynamite duo of MaryAnn Gulyas and Mary Salvatore have been humming and strumming together as Kismet for several years. Their songs stress positive attitudes and express an anti-bullying’ theme. Enjoy their music at the Spirit of Peace Festival on November 8th.

The flying feet of the Wild Irish Acres Dancers have been entertaining in the capital district since 1994. Continuing the legend, culture, and beauty of the dance in a non-competitive environment they also continue the tradition of Irish dance as a family activity. Come and enjoy these spirited dancers on Nov 8th.

Cohoes Rotary Cleans Up

Cayuga Plaza

The Rotary Club of Cohoes has adopted Cayuga Plaza as one of its ongoing community service projects. The plaza is the public area located between the Cohoes Community Center and Cayuga Plaza apartments, and the Cohoes Senior Center and Dr. Jay McDonald Towers apartments.

On September 29, Rotarians and family members

raked leaves, trimmed trees, weeded, and placed mulch under the shrubs. In the spring the club will join with additional volunteers on Global Youth Service Day to plant flowers and clean up the plaza in an ongoing effort to maintain the beauty of the area as part of the City of Cohoes Beautification Program.

Cohoes Rotary Visits Van Schaick Mansion

On September 12, the Rotary Club of Cohoes held its weekly meeting at the historic Van Schaick Mansion located at the junction of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers on Van Schaick Island in Cohoes, NY. A tour of the house, grounds, and family cemetery was conducted by members of the General Peter Gansevoort Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. In the mid 1960s the Cohoes Rotary helped to support the Mohawk Yorkers of Cohoes High School in restoring the Van Schaick cemetery as a community service project.

The Van Schaick Mansion was the home of Anthony Van Schaick, built in 1755, on a section of the “Half Moon” patent, granted to his father jointly with Philip Pieterse Schuyler on September 11, 1665. Schuyler transferred his interest in the Patent to the Van Schaick family in 1674.

The house was used as military headquarters during the French and Indian War and later during the American Revolution. Generals Montgomery, Schuyler, Gates, Stark, Morgan Gansevoort, St. Clair and Benedict Arnold planned the Battle of Saratoga at the mansion. In the days leading up to the battle, 5,000 continental soldiers were garrisoned around the mansion. General Burgoyne and 20 of his staff officers

were brought to the mansion before being returned

to Albany as prisoners of war. The mansion served as the capitol of New York

State for four days. Governor Clinton made the house his temporary capitol from August 22-25, 1777.

General George Washington made at least one visit to the area surrounding the mansion. In 1783 he briefly stopped to view the Cohoes Falls during a tour of the Northern frontier.

The Van Schaick Mansion is open for tours by appointment by calling 518-235-2699.
