Programs: The American Flute - Standard American Flute repertoire. This concert looks at the history of 20th Century American Flute composition, as well as presenting recently commissioned works. Ms. Siesel has performed her program of American Flute works in Taiwan, Japan, Spain and China. American composers commissioned by Ms. Siesel include Michael Torke, Stefania DeKenessey, Fredrick Kaufman, Jay Alan Yim and many others. Ms. Siesel also presents a series of master classes on the repertoire, as featured at the Central Conservatory in Beijing, China. The Multi-Media Flute - A performance of works from different cultures, exploring issues that are pertinent and current to each culture, through music, art, video and photography. This concert promotes cultural understanding and awareness and celebrates cultural identities, with works by Frederick Kaufman- “Meditation on a Lonely Flute”, Sidney Corbett - “Lineage”, Ping Jin – “Cloud, Rain and the Goddess Peak”, Tan Mizi and many others.

For example, Ms. Siesel pairs solo flute music by Chinese composers, Pin Jin and Tan Mizi with slides of visual art by Paul Wong. Wong’s work, "Lost Relics" depicts the cultural and environmental destruction that is being caused by the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River. Pin Jin’s “Cloud, Rain and the Goddess Peak” is also based on the Three Gorges Dam destruction, while Tan Mizi’s “Flute Solo” has been transcribed from traditional Chinese flute to western flute.

“Meditation on a Lonely Flute”, by Frederick Kaufman, reflects on Kaufman’s experiences in the Sinai Desert during the 1967 Six Day War, in Israel. “Predatory Postures”, by Raymond Torres Santos, describes how urban environments are invading the American countryside.

Lineage- Premiere Tour of new expanded 40 minute work by composer, Sidney Corbett. Lineage is a multi-media work for live solo flute and six prerecorded flute tracks, along with projected visual imagery. This imagery includes photographs by Clemens Kalischer of Displaced Persons arriving in New York City after WWII and snapshots of 1960’s suburban America. Lineage centers on questions of displacement and relocation, recollection and renewal. This is at once an extremely personal work, focusing on the experiences of one family, on the other hand, however, it also addresses universal and fundamentally humanistic issues such as the subjective and selective nature of memory, the searing questions of spiritual identity in times of acute hardship and the ability to find genuine and deeply felt affirmation of the dignity of human life.

The material on the tape, in addition to multi-tracked flute sounds, includes recorded recollections of German Jewish life in the 1930’s, as relayed in telephone conversations by Anne Stein Siesel, the flutist Barbara Siesel’s mother, who fled Germany in 1939. As immigrant experiences continue today, history reminds us that it is especially the painful and uncomfortable issues which need to be confronted, as directly as possible, and that cowardice and the failure to act always exact the highest toll. Re-Place - Traditional and new masterpieces in a theatrical cultural setting. Concert for Flute and Piano Audiences arrive at the concert hall and are transported through time to the cultural atmosphere of prewar Germany. The venue lobby has been transformed into a Berlin coffeehouse, complete with period artwork, music and desserts. Upon arrival, guests have been invited to sign the “Lineage Linen”, documenting when and from where their families immigrated to America. The concert begins with German music, representative of prewar culture. Each piece has been selected to give context to the jarring cultural dislocation of World War II. In Germany, both Bach and Schubert’s extraordinary works were actually banned to Jewish performers in 1936. The program opens with these composers, to remind us of the rich cultural heritage of the prewar era. Works by Hindemith, exiled German composer, follow to represent the displacement of prominent German composers and intellectuals. Next, selections from Sidney Corbett’s new composition, “Lineage”, for solo flute and multiple recorded flutes, in three movements, comment on displacement. The piece conveys both universal and particular experiences of immigration, through a story told in video projections, of photographs that record a deep cultural transition from émigré to home in America. Media artist, Bruce Wands, merges image upon image, juxtaposing the photographic artistry of Clemens Kalischer with the family snapshots and oral history of a woman and man who made the journey from war torn Europe to America. The evening ends with “Duo for Flute and Piano”, by quintessential American composer, Aaron Copeland. Flutist, Barbara Siesel, has developed this cross-disciplinary program that extends the reach of classical music and visual media into the classical repertoire.

BARBARA SIESEL BARBARA SIESEL –– Artistic Director Artistic Director STORM KING MUSIC FESTIVAL Storm King Music Festival was founded by Barbara Siesel in 1999 at a turning point in her career. With a history that includes an Electronic Music Fellowship at the Juilliard School, the creation of the interdisciplinary arts curriculum at the New World School of the Arts, and participation on numerous panels governing the development of multimedia projects—all in addition to presenting multimedia events internationally—Barbara was playing a leading role in a new area of artistic expression. Drawing on this extensive experience, she created the Storm King Music Festival, in the Hudson Highlands, as a permanent home base for the development of multimedia projects. In this new arena she draws artists, composers, performers, technologists to collaborate on new ideas. Out of this festival, comes innovative work, which is presented at the Festival and made available for performance elsewhere. At Storm King, important topics that affect the shape of “classical music” and technology in the twenty-first century are brought to light through seminars and discussions among leading musicians and noted artists in the multimedia field.
