citizen observer patrol unit 37 (c.o.p.) ~ NEW! The COP program is the largest community volunteer program in the USA, approximately 2,000 members strong, comprised of both women and men. The objective of the COP program is to “observe and report,” and to be the eyes and ears, in and around our community. It has been reported that having a COP program reduces incidents within communities by 80 percent. The same results can be expected at the Cove. We have a number of Cove residents who have volunteered for this program, but we urge additional residents to join us. By volunteering your time, which is a minimum of only three hours per week, you will be making a difference in the quality of life of all our neighbors. When on patrol we will observe open garage doors, check on your home when you are on vacation (with permission from you), and even look in on infirm residents. If you are interested, we have applications available and one of your Designated Officers – Tom Hyman, Al Hochberg or Alan Storch – will deliver or email an application to you.

Our third event was attended by almost 200 people! Las Vegas entertainer Tony Ferretti performed, along with his friend, David Orsin. The audience thought they were great and had the room rocking with songs by Tom Jones, Sinatra, Bennet, Dean Martin, Neil Diamond, Frankie Valli, Dion, and many others. tennis news

As our second full season winds down I would like to thank all of you who supported your tennis program by participating in the leagues, clinics, lessons, and social events. Our continued growth is exciting and I am looking forward to meeting new people and growing the tennis program further.

The league program grew this season. The men’s program added a second team and also ventured into the night league, and the women’s program added a third team. Already plans are underway for the fall and continued expansion.

Although the summers in South Florida are quiet and very hot and humid, there are still plenty of tennis players active at Valencia Cove, and I will be organizing round robins, another demo day, and some evening programs for all levels of play. -Phil Flanagan

total HealtH systeMscHeck your stress (and neGatiVe tHouGHts) at tHe doorA growing body of evidence suggests that psychological factors are — literally — heartfelt, and can contribute to cardiac risk. Stress from all sorts of challenging situations and events plays a significant role in cardiovascular symptoms and outcome, particularly heart attack risk. The same is true for depression, anxiety, anger, hostility, and social isolation. Acting alone, each of these factors heightens your chances of developing heart problems. But these issues often occur together, for example, psychological stress often leads to anxiety, depression can lead to social isolation, and so on.

Does reducing stress, or changing how you respond to it, actually reduce your chances of developing heart disease or having a heart attack? The answer is not entirely clear, but many studies suggest the answer is “yes.” There is much to learn about exactly how it works. Research indicates that constant stress contributes biologically to heart disease risk factors, such as high blood pressure and the formation of artery-clogging deposits. Other research finds that chronic stress may make it more difficult to sleep, eat well, quit smoking, and exercise.

Fortunately, you can learn healthier ways to respond to stress that may help your heart and improve your quality of life. These include relaxation exercises (deep breathing, guided imagery), physical activity (walking, yoga), and staying connected with friends, co-workers, and family members.
