The provision of quality visual arts and crafts as part of new developments can bring social, cultural, envi-ronmental, educational and economic benets, both to the new development and the community at large. It is considered particularly important that public art is integrated into the overall design of the precinct including landmark works such as sculptures as well as functional elements e.g. lighting, landscape, street furniture, oor designs and signage.

Issues: •The site currently serves as a industrial port,

industry for pot-ash and services for ferries and cruise ships, with the expansion of its southern section, the site’s industry will relocate southwards. This presents an opportunity to viably utilise the newly vacant space.

•The precinct is located in a post industrial area with the Ronda Litoral passing through it. The site is wedged between Montjüic and the Mediterranean Sea. Due to its location and previous use, the site has never been identied as a destination point. As such there is a desire to create an enriched and active place to enable a sense of place.

•There is a social desire for public art and an attractive landscape that are contemporary and timely, which can culturally responds to the surrounding environment of Barcelona.

Objectives:•Opportunities for the incorporation of public art

should be integrated from the outset and through subsequent planning and concept stages of relevant landscape architecture projects.

•By commissioning site specific artworks that are culturally relevant and environmentally appropriate to place. Artworks that conceptually engage with a sense of place will encourage a high level of ownership and respect from residents and visitors alike.

•By working with artists to create artworks that have a conceptually timeless quality and are designed and constructed from appropriate materials for the required life span. An artwork should strive to instill a sense of ownership and pride, bringing the community together to ensure the artwork is cared for respectively now and in the future.

Strategies:•Using the All-of-a-Piece Urban Design strategy the

precinct will include a masterplan for the overall scheme. It will then be parcelled off for sub-developers to develop and design.

•The design will use existing buildings for creative adaptive re-use.

•Adaptive reuse will begin as part of the rst stages of development in the precinct.
